How would you rate DC Guesthouse?
Outlets to every bed. Clean showers and bathrooms. Thr lockers big enough to fit your bag. Walking distance of the big sights. And bus stops close by. Breakfast is good and also the excursions are fun.
The staff is help full, they give you maps to find eveything even grocery stores.
The shared areas are less homy than another hi hostel i had been but i cant complain about anything.
Busy youth hostel in great central location. Don't count on getting a last minute booking though. I stayed here when I first visited DC and it was super easy to get to all the tourist spots (I now work near here and it is a nice central area). Close to several metros. Nothing special or luxurious, just your basic youth hostel. Seemed clean. The elevators were really slow though.
While I was there they had a free meal event in their large kitchen which was nice and a good way to meet people. They also had several other tours going on.
Clean, social, solid wifi & large lockers in room. Pool table, huge kitchen, guitar and lots of other stuff with 24hr access and staff. No curfew. A little expensive for a hostel & +$3 for not being a HI member... They have daily tours and activities. Very close to everything you want to do in DC (walking distance if you don't have rickets). Only strange thing was there was a family and a couple older people - just wasn't expecting it with my experience in hostels abroad. But not a problem at all. My recommendation - stay here if you're in DC.
This is my second stay at HI in Washington, DC! I WILL be back! I was accompanied by my 8 y.o. daughter and joined (on the second day) by my sister and her two daughters.
We were able to share a six bed dorm. There were a couple of cold nights, but the extra blankets that were provided made everything cozy. Plenty of pillows, also.
Michelle, Christina, and John went out of their way to welcome us and make our stay pleasant. I loved John's "other language" greetings every morning at breakfast. Michelle and Christina always had welcoming smiles.
This hostel is centrally located (just a few blocks from the White House; 3 blocks from blue line subway, 6 blocks from yellow line subway, and the circulator bus stop is at the end of the block!). The hostel has maps, bus routes, free tours, everything a visitor needs to enjoy the Capital.
The free breakfast will start your day off right: fresh fruit, cereal, oatmeal, bagels, toast, coffee, juice. Not to mention the new people you'll meet while enjoying your meal!
Free wifi (no reception problems on 3rd floor); elevator was S L O W so I took the stairs most of the time! Plenty of things to do in DC so I didn't watch tv or socialize very much.
All in all, this is a great place to stay.
The ventilation/heating in the room is ridiculously loud, the room was a bit smelly (but that was maybe due to the people :D ...), my light and power outlet didn't work, and the breakfast is very basic. I liked the pillows, the sanitary facilities, and the common area as well as most of the staff. HI Chicago definitely wins, but you can for sure spend some nights here.
I liked so much... the hostel is clean. the man who prepared the breakfast is very very funny. The reception, all the employees is nice!!!
I stayed at HI for two nights. I shared a room with 5 girls. All of them were PhDs and students who came to participate in a conference in DC. The room and my bed were clean. I liked that HI has lockers in each room, so people don't have to worry about their belongings. It was warm and comfortable. The bathroom was clean. Breakfast was fair as well. HI's staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, I liked my experience at HI, and would probably return again.
This is my new favorite place to stay in DC. *MUCH* cheaper than hotels!
- Easy walk to the National Mall
- On the DC Circulator Bus Route
- Solid bunk beds with no more than 10 people per room
- Secure location; requires keycard to get into the building and to access the room
- Free lockers in the rooms (requires your own lock)
- Free earplugs
- Free WiFi
- Locks for sale at the front desk
- Free Breakfast - Cereal, vanilla yogurt, muffins, bread/toast, bagels, juice, cream cheese, peanut butter, coffee, and tea
- Free water bottle refill stations on 1st and 2nd floors
- Sheets, blankets, pillowcases, and towel provided
- *HOT* water! Seriously, watch out how hot the water is.
- Restrooms on every floor except the dining floor.
- Book lending shelf
- Lots of great games on the ground floor
- Free tours and events at night 2-3 times a week
- Wall plugs in each bunk so you can charge your phone
- 3 blocks from the nearest Metro Station
- If you change your reservation, make sure your charges are adjusted. Mine were not, so I had to call them back to fix it.
- $4/day to hold your bag if you need to drop it off before check in or after check out
- Lockers are approx. 24 inches deep x 24 inches wide x 36 inches tall with no shelves
- Some showers are lacking in places to put your clothes, etc
- I was there in January, and it could get a little warm in the room. No way to adjust temperature except to go to the front desk.
- Ventilation is quite loud, but I didn't notice with earplugs
- WiFi can be quite slow
So far so good. Nice place full of nice people from every where! Can easily get use to
HI-DC is perfectly located on the north side of DC easy access to bus and metro or a easy walk to the mall/etc. very friendly staff, very clean rooms, good amenities, services, and bag storage after check-out.
Loved meeting people literally from all over the world here and mingling with them on tours guided by community volunteers and exploring the city with my new friends.
Overall great, great experience!!
I just love this place. I stayed in the 10 bed Co-ed sharing room...the people living there were friendly. Most of them were bagpackers between 17-25 years of age and all were willing to make new friends.
The place is amazing. They have good breakfast. The staff is amazing and very helpful. The rooms are good and the place is usually quiet except the air conditioners which tend to make a lot of noise but you can get used to that. The beds are clean and there are 2 outlets per bed.
They do charge you 3$/day extra if you are not a HI member but that is ok given that the rates are low.
I would definitely go back to this place if I had a chance.
The location is really good, and can walk to malls, resturants and subway station. The staff here are really nice. The only one thing should point out is that the air conditioner here in the room is too loud.
I stayed at HI - Washington DC for 1 night last summer. It's been a while, I know, but I think it's worth it to share my opinion. I really liked the bedroom, the bathroom was clean, the breakfast is awesome with lots of options, and the best thing about the whole stay was the guy who was at the salon asking everybody how to say GOOD MORNING in their languages.
It was my very first time on a hostel, and it left a great impression :)
Great price, location and very friendly staff. Beds were not the most comfortable, but still the best hostel I've stayed in.
My friend was staying at this place while visiting Washington DC. You share a room (by gender) that has bunk beds for ten roommates. I didn't actually stay in, but my friend let me visit her room, and from what I saw, the place is clean and well organized. You share kitchen, waiting area that is lively with people. But everyone seemed considerate of each other; so it was sociable but not loud or obnoxious.
One thing I found weird was the bathroom. The last bathroom stall that is by the window has no wall. Anyone could just come and stand there and stare at you pooping or peeing. What's the point of having that stall? No one's gonna use it. Well, unless you're an idiot like me. I didn't realize that it was missing one side of the wall and walked right in it to take care of my business. When I sat on the toilet, I saw the freeking wall and I was like...what the...?
Check-in was easy and quick, and the layout of the hostel was explained. Room was clean, functional, and as expected. Linens are clean, bed is squeaky, but comfortable. It's not a 10" deep mattress, to be sure, but it works well enough and for the price, can't be beat.
I'm very glad we stayed here, it's very close to a ton of activities and places to go, and the price is amazing.
Decent hostel in the center of it all. Nice place to meet new people to wander around the city with
Location is fantastic, close to the National Mall and Metro station. Dorms are large, with plenty of storage space. Larger than average lockers. Complimentary breakfast is okay. Beds quite comfortable.
Bathrooms and showers facilities are limited unfortunately, given the dorm size. Overall, one of the better big city hostels I've visited.
It is very clean and the location is just awesome. You can walk to every thing you want to visit. The price is a little high but the breakfast is included. Only bad thing was that the breakfast closes at 9.30
Clean rooms at a very inexpensive price, especially if willing to live in one of the dorms. Free breakfast and coffee in the morning was a nice perk.
Only me??? I thought this hostel was sucks. Very cold, cold, cold!so expensive..!! But,staff was so kind. That's it. Cold...cold...a
Great hostel with good service! Breakfest is amazing and there are lots of stuff to do for free and interect with other guests!
Place is excellent. Location is extremely central can walk to pretty much anything. Whole place is very clean. Free breakfast is good and the kitchen facilities are the best I've ever seen. Shared spaces are again excellent with lots of books, board games and comfy seating. The lockers in the rooms are large managed to fit a full sized suitcase and hand lagage bag inside with ease. The hostel organises free tours each day which are good and a great way to meet others. I would have no reservation returning or recommending to friends and family.
This was my first time staying at a hostel, and though I don't think the experience is really for me, HI did a great job. The facilities were clean, comfortable, and welcoming, the staff was upbeat, and the included breakfast was fine. Quiet time isn't until 11, so I was woken up several times after I went to bed, and the bed honestly wasn't that comfortable, but it was a great experience for the price.
Brilliant location, 10min walk to the White House and 15min to the National Mall. Clean with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Good facilities with free Wi-Fi in the room. Comfortable beds and good AC for the summer months.
My first hostel, so I didn't know what to expect, but overall really great. Friendly staff. 24/hr door people (remember your receipt to get in late), all you can eat bananas, towel, shower (with soap if you forgot it, super basic), and all you can bagel breakfast (at designated breakfast time). Did a lot of research, looking at other places which were a little worrying (had time restrictions to get in, or were very vague). Overall, I'd stay here again. The only bad part was waking up at 6 am with like 6 sweaty dudes in a room without air circulation, but then I think the A/C must have kicked on later.
Location is great. The Metro is in walking distance, lots of places to eat.
The floors are creaky, the AC is loud for short bursts, the bathrooms are okay, the lockers require the smaller locks to work better. The full combo locks require a bit of wiggling, you can just stop by the CVS to buy a new one, or just rent for $4. You might need a sleep mask because the lights outside at night are bright. Besides street noise and the chatter in the halls, it is rather quiet in the rooms.
For breakfast, there was toast, bagels, cereal, granola, muffins, tea, coffee, oj, milk. Nothing that requires a stove to cook.
Staff is great, very helpful and accommodating. Internet, ATM, games, books, tours, maps, phones in excess.
Pretty good hostel in a decent location. Staff is helpful and there's a community vibe at breakfast time. The rooms are good, though not super nice which is why I gave the 4 stars. Overall good stay though, definitely recommended if you want an affordable, safe option!
It is a good place if you have a low budget. Every room have 5 double beds. So you should consider going in big groups so you don't share rooms with strangers. It is a good place to stay because it is close to all the tourist attractions. They also include breakfast.
It's actually a pretty nice hostel. People of all ages. I stayed in a standard 8 bedroom. Nothing fancy. Bathroom was not in the room. There was even a greeter at breakfast to explain the process. Breakfast was only bread and granola. So that left a bit to be desired. Otherwise for a quick trip worth it.
Good overall. I had a shared room (4 bunks). You have to ask the reception to control the temperature in your room. This is something that they don't really tell you when you check in. So me and my bunkmates were pretty much sweating during the whole night. Other than that, they have a decent breakfast and all the employees were courteous.
This was a clean and quiet Hostel with a good free breakfast. They also had nice group activities. Where you could meet other travelers. They have large lockers to put your stuff in plus it was fairly close to all the museums and the White House.
Cool environment. Interesting members from around the world. Helpful staff.
European style hostel. Room wasn't exactly as described. A lot of street noise made it impossible to sleep, so use earplugs. Other than that it's great!
Great hostel! Friendly helpful staff, rooms/ bathrooms/ meeting areas are nice and clean and well taken care of. Hostel is very big - 5 floors of rooms, 8 in total - with lots of interesting places nearby, being in the City Center of DC. One of the main Metro Rail stations is within blocks and there are Metrobus stations on every corner, making public transit easy to get to. Would totally recommend for world or country travelers or those who need to come into DC for work. Good continental breakfast too! Worth the visit for sure.
An amazing hostel which deserves every star. Clean, inexpensive, spacious, and quite accommodating. Upon arrival, the staff was helpful and welcoming, and my 6-person room was found spotless. I was able to store my roller bag in my assigned locker next to my bed (bring your own lock), and the bathroom down the hall was clean and not crowded at all. Each morning they have a breakfast consisting of toast, bagels, oatmeal, cereal, coffee/tea, and juices (also a large kitchen for cooking your own meal). The location is also great, as it is a short walk from a Metro Staton, and not too far from all the classic historical sights. Need I say more? I will definitely be staying here at HI Washington DC Hostel when I visit the area again.
Really nice hostel, nice beds, extra pillow, good amount of locker room and free breakfast and towel rental. These are the sort of things that differentiate a very good hostel from just a good one.
The hostel is clean and well situated--walking distance to everything. The building is quite old however and there are a number of maintenance issues throughout. The room I stayed in had a broken door, but thankfully the crowd here is respectful for the most part. Hot water in the shower was also an issue, at whatever hour I tried to shower. You have to wait quite a long while before the water gets hot, if it does at all. The free breakfast is pretty good and the wifi worked well for me while I was there. As with any hostel experience the rooms smell like armpits/feet. Despite all of this, this place is by far the best deal in DC, and for the daily price the amenities really are more than sufficient.
The best part of shared kitchen in this Hostel is that you can cook yourself with your recently known friends and hostellers. You will find cooking utensilsansd even some donated breads, eggs, spices. They organize nice walks around the city.
Not impressed with the hostel. Bland environment and bad living conditions. There are 8 floors in total which means there are many people living in the hostel. Maybe I am used to European hostels and expected a better experience.
This was the first time I've ever stayed at a hostel and it was above my expectations. Firstly, the customer service was great. A group of us had made individual reservations and we needed to be moved to one room. I called to make the change and Francisco answered. He was very helpful and even took the time to email me to make sure that the changes were correct. When I arrived at the hostel, check in was a breeze, there were complementary 🍌s everywhere, the decor was cool (really dig the metro theme), and there was a wall of events that we could sign up for. For the price it's a really good deal, I would definitely stay there again.
Clean hostel and in a great location from DC's most famous monuments (20 min by foot)
A very nice place to stay, cleaned bathrooms, bedrooms, locker facility, breakfast with affordable price. If you take membership then no need to pay extra $4 per day.
Good, cheap, clean accommodation. Simple but more than adequate breakfast and kitchen facilities. Clean bathrooms. Best aspect is its centrality. 15 minutes walk to the Mall, 15 minutes walk to the White House so great for tourists.
The location for the hostel is great, with the Capitol and a bunch of restaurants and bars close. The rooms are pretty nice, however if you can't sleep with a lot of noise, this may not be the hostel for you. The service was good, friendly staff. Overall, a good experience.
Great place to stay. Very clean rooms and restrooms, showers. Lovely staff. Free breakfast is awesome.
We took a shared room that was confortable, the breakfast was included and good. The people working at the hotel were also amazing. The activities and the cleaness of the hotel was really good. It was also great that it is in the center of city wish made it easy to go visit.
Definitely a better than expected experience. Staff was very friendly and helpful, starting conversations and answering any questions I had. It's located right in the heart of Downtown which made getting to everywhere easy. Noise levels were pretty good as well. Not as quite as a nice hotel, but better than even some motels I've been too. Had no issues sleeping. Well worth the price and a general good experience.
The staff was helpful, the dorm rooms were very clean and each bunk bed had its own personal lamp and many power outlets. They even provided locks for $4 for the lockers in the dorm room. The breakfast was good, and there were daily events held. The location was very good as well. The only minor issues I had were that the common washrooms should have been better maintained, and the WiFi was not stable; the connection kept dropping. I stayed here for 4 days and will recommend this place to anyone looking for a cheap option to spend short time in Washington DC.
It's the little things--like neat bins for your food in the kitchen, plentiful shelves for your clothes in the showers, paper towels by the sinks, a locker, a light, and an electrical outlet for every bed. And then there is the genuine helpfulness of the staff. The housekeeping staff was watching to ensure that everyone remembered his or her jacket after breakfast! Who does that? The people are truly exceptional.
This hostel was clean and large, and the price was good for the excellent location. The bathrooms were fine, there were separate men's and women's ones on my floor. There were 3 showers and 3 toilet stalls. I stayed in a 10 bed female dorm and brought my own lock (theirs were $4 if you forgot one) for the large locker which was big enough for my carry-on suitcase, backpack, and tote bag. I didn't sleep very well on the bunk bed, however. It felt like an earthquake when the other person got down at 6am. The other guests were a wide mix of young and older, foreign and American. I slept through breakfast served 7-10 am so I can't comment on that. Overall it's not a bad option for DC on the cheap, if you aren't a light sleeper.
The HI hostel is a great place to be for both community and cleanliness. I've been to some pretty bad hostels so clean is a big plus plus and there is no problem here. At breakfast everyone was friendly and I spoke with people from all over the world, I came alone and usually have a hard time talking to people, so this was a cool experience to have. They also put together free trips for everyone. I didn't participate, but seems cool.
I stayed here for a couple nights about three months ago - this is a great, high-quality hostel that will make you feel at home in DC! The staff are friendly, the rooms are high quality with clean bedsheets, the bathrooms were extremely clean, and the guests are all fellow travelers and good clientele.
The hostel is located in the center of the city near two metro stations and all parts of the city are accessible. Breakfast is included, and there's some great restaurants nearby to grab lunch and dinner.
Good experience! The location is great and I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast.
The lockers were also great because they fit my huge backpack. Bed and linen were okay and all in all for a hostel a very good 5/5!
I enjoyed my stayed here. The rooms were extremely quiet and comfortable. However, the bathrooms would be nice if they would have some basic toiletries like shampoo and conditioner attached to the showers like other hostels. In all, the staff made everything worth booking for in the future.
Location of the hospital couldn't be better! Very centrally located and in a very nice area. The rooms are nice and the common areas are very nice as well. Staff was very friendly and gave great recommendations. Definitely recommend!
HI always offer decent boarding if you are looking for a place to stay. The staff are friendly and accommodating and thwit prices are decent. Giving it a 4 star because HI Boston remains my favourite ❤ but DC is good as well 👌
Had a great stay here for one evening. Check in was very quick and accommodating. The hostel was very clean, room was quite large, and breakfast was fantastic. Staff were kind in showing how to use the kitchen, and there was someone cleaning your dishes for you. My only problem is how loud / squeaky the beds are - I didn't get a great sleep due to my bunkmate tossing and turning. Other than this it was a great stay. 5/5
Very well run hostel, conveniently located near Metro Central. DC is available for your pleasure or work. Meeting people from all walks is a great part of the hostel experience. John is the star of the show! Choreographing the flow through the breakfast dining area, he brings civil order to the creative chaos. Excellent host, with a fine sense of humor, and grace.
Great, stayed in a ten person dorm for a couple of nights and the people I met were friendly. They have free breakfast and events in the evening for those interested. Additionally, they have lockers in the rooms which I appreciated a lot.
Good location, staffs are friendly, nice kitchen and wonderful breakfast. Room is clean, but the door is too heavy to open, and closing a bit loudly. Every bed have charger and small light, pretty good.
Really good hostel. 100% recommendable! Friendly and helpful staff, top location (10-15min to the Center/Parc), really clean for a hostel, breakfast was okay and nice people around. The only negative point i´d like to mention is that it is really cold in the night (I think just in the winter time), however they know it, that´s why they provide extra blankets in the rooms.
Very functional accommodation. I loved it. Particularly liked the locker and laundry facility. 4$ for 24 hours to use the fully automated locker after checking out is not bad at all! (You can use one locker to store an oversized check-in bag and you can rent more lockers if you like). Very clean toilets and shower. Bedside light for use at night without disturbing others in the dorm. Great high speed internet. Locker in room good enough to store carry on luggage and more.l
This is an amazing place of stay. The ambience, cleanliness and service provided is fantastic. They provide guests with complimentary breakfast. The stay cost is cheap compared to other places. I liked the stay a lot. I got to stay only for a night. Would recommend any student who wants a place of stay in DC.
Great location. Friendly staff. Good rates. Generally clean. Cons: breakfast options are limited, hot water broke down. Overall would recommend though.
Didn’t like the Hostel that much. The lobby staff is not kind at all. But the Kitchen and the Maids staff they’re awesome. I don’t mind walking from my room to the bathroom but this one was very cold and I went in winter so imagine how cold would be and the shower were not hot at all.
Great location! Walking distance to the National mall, lots of food, drink, and shopping options close by. Staff was friendly and helpful. Dorm rooms were clean and comfortable. Small amount of noise due to facing onto main street but nothing that would prevent sleeping. Washrooms were clean. Included breakfast was a nice bonus.
Spent a week here. Great service. Alot is supplied so for someone that forgot some essentials, I was in good hands. I love the staff especially the cafeteria, very kind and bilingual. If I ever go to D.C. again I'm going back there.
It had really nice activities like Night Monument Tour and Dinner night, which are free to its visitors! I had stayed here for 8 nights and all those moments were precious.
A great hostel located near the circulator bus and the red line for great access to the city. Decent beds, secure lockers, and a kitchen with fridges and free food on occasion. The entire hostel is very clean, beds, lobby, and the bathroom. They also have convenient items for sale like locks or toothbrushes at the front desk. All in all a great choice.
Awesome place right in heart of the city. Great management. Would love to visit again
Very great place to stay. Was my first time staying in a hostel, found it very exciting from the front desk staff to the kitchen team. The kitchen staff was always willing to help out. Breakfast was simple but nice and fresh. My room mates were great people.
Honestly it deserves a 5 star. No where else can you stay so cheaply in downtown DC for the quality of this place. The front desk attendants were honest and helpful. During breakfast there is a very friendly man who will help you find your way around the kitchen, or keep you company while you eat. Some of the outlets in the rooms don't work, but there are more that work nearby. The lockers are bigger than expected. This brings me to my first misfortune, in that I brought a lock to avoid buying one. See the attached picture but the lock I brought was too tall for the small area forcing me to buy a overpriced $4 lock that we easily picked when we lost the tiny set of keys.
The room was spacious for a hostel, but I missed the private bathroom. Also another guest ended up sleeping in my bed and I had to get the front desk to deal with it. Not their fault though. The kitchen floor was nice too.
A very conveniently located close 2 tourist sites; Very friendly hostelling International hostel. A nice place to stay. I took a star off for the cold showers. Good kitchen to cook your own meals. Free cereal, bagel and coffee breakfast.
Great place! I will recommend it to everyone I know who's going to DC. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Nice and HAPPY staff. Good and FREE breakfast. A/C working (more than) fine in hot summer days. 24h kitchen; always snacks in the Lobby and there's also a lot of entertainment options down there. Amazing location! Close to metro (10min walk) and close to White house (15min walk). Subway (restaurant) right next door.
HI WASHINGTON DC is the best hostel to stay while under a low budget. The rate per night is the lowest you will find in the Capital. During your stay, you will be served free breakfast, have access to computers with internet, and dormitory rooms. Also, you do have access to use their full kitchen, recreation room, and main lobby area. I hope you would enjoy you stay at HI WASHINGTON D.C. Hostel.
Hostel was great, convenient location. Friendly staff, room had great layout and people respected quiet hours. AC was a bit loud but okay.
The staff here was wonderful. In the morning at breakfast there was this guy with a huge grin greeting you and telling you the ropes. Even when he had to correct my friend on something he had was friendly! They also arranged great gatherings for those traveling solo.
This was what I expected from a youth hostel. Basic, but it was clean and had everything you needed. Safe bed, clean bathrooms, and a good laundry. It was a plus to get breakfast. It was basic but enough to get you going. And chatting with the people at your table was fun.
A great price. 3 block walk to metro. Next to some very high end hotels and 10 min from white house,
Hi hostel of D.C. is a great place to stay while visiting the city. Its affordable, It's clean also tours and event's for the guests. Hi hostel
of D.C. is a great place if would love to see other traditions and culture stay at Hi Washington of D.C.
Cross off another item on the bucket list! Meeting amazing people from all over the world! We went on a tour to the Market today. About 16 people went. 14 of them were from 13 different countries! How else do you meet such a diverse group of adventuresome people!
Great, affordable place to lie your head while exploring the nation's capital!
I appreciated the free breakfast, I would've like more protein options...maybe a boiled egg.
My top bunk was very comfortable, softer than my own mattress! It was great to have an outlet & light in the top bunk area, it wasn't a hassle to charge my phone/tablet.
This is my 2nd stay in a hostel...my biggest fear is always, will the bathrooms be gross? Thankfully "gross bathrooms" are not a problem here. It put me at ease to see staff regularly cleaning...and I was usually gone exploring for at least 10-11 hours each day...so that says a lot about how well housekeeping maintains cleanliness.
The filtered water station was a plus, I could conveniently fill my water bottle on the way out for the day.
Location is great...close to the DC circulator bus stop.
I would definitely come back to this location when I visit again.
Good clean hostel, group events happening every night. Personally thought it felt almost too big and no alcohol allowed was an odd rule. Otherwise a good hostel and in a great location
This was my first time in a hostel. It was a good experience but I was kind of missing the privacy. I'm not going to knock off stars for that. BUT I gave four stars instead of five just because they wanted to charge $4 for me to store my luggage after check out. Any hotel I've been to will do that for free. That was my only issue.
Location was really good. Lots of food in the area. Walking distance to a lot of sites. The hostel had great customer service
Can't believe what a great location this is for Washington DC. Right near the action. I was there for a cooking class, and was impressed by here kitchen and dining area. The security also seemed good. The lounge area near the front counter was warm and inviting. The diversity of people starting there was apparently from the people I ran into during my three hours there.
I had a terrific stay here! The staff was friendly and I enjoyed having a free breakfast in the morning. I really enjoyed my trip.
This was the first time staying in a hostel. It makes sense when you think how little time you spend in the hotel when out on vacation. They offer free tours but do carry a few dollar bills with you for the bus. The kitchen was being remodeled so the only breakfast was croissant and coffee. The rooms were clean with large lockers. My carry-on and a full backpack fit fine. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The bad thing is that the beds creak a lot and the bathroom was cold I don’t think there is any ac/heater in there. There is only one elevator that fits maybe 4 or 5 people at a time so if you are in the top floors 7 or 8 like I was be aware that you will be waiting for the elevator. But over all they experience was good and I would recommend it. Good luck in your travels.
I had a fantastic stay at the Hi Washington Hostel. The room was very clean and spacious. Good breakfast and very friendly atmosphere. I will definitely recommend everyone to consider booking a bed in this hostel.
Amazing hotel, it's really clean and my room we half empty with very considerate people.
The breakfast was really nice!
One thing I wish could be the changed but the heater was turned on really high and it got really hot .
Staff was wonderful, accodomated us, felt at home, relaxed and accepting environment, plenty of stuff to do in downtime in lobby (pool table, cards, board games, guitars, etc.), organized free tours and bar crawls, rooms were clean. Free breakfast was wonderful as well but could use more variety. Alcohol not permitted but that wasn't really a big deal. I figure if you're respectable and clean up after yourself and don't get too rowdy at 2 AM, it's fine to drink there. Just don't be rude about it! Overall, my best experience in a hostel ever and I will most certainly return in the future 🤗
Wonderful location and was very near to most of the sight seeings. Friendly staff. I opted for a 10 member bed room. Was expecting least privacy but the entire room were well distributed in 2 and 4 beds within a room itself with partitions. I do recommend this place.
Affordable prices for stay. Very good option for a solo travelers. Location is very good. All the important tourist places are walkable from the hostel. Subway station is also at the walkable distance. For Indians a few good restaurants are available nearby.
However facilities are relatively less when compared to the hostel in NYC.
Excellent customer service, excellent staff, rooms, restroom kitchen are clean, excellent breakfast include in the price. That hostel is in center in Washington, so we don't need to take bus and metro to visit most of attraction we can walk!
I recommend for sure that place and I'll have the pleasure to come back again!!
The hostel is superbly clean. Staff is great and the overall service exceeded my expectations. They do not allow sleeping bags and I was a bit afraid of the cold at night but the room temperature was ok. Breakfast included eggs (boiled) and I was happy! Thanks!
This place is very cold and corporate. The free breakfast is amazing. I slept in a 10 bed all females. The rooms are depressing but whatever. Pretty sure there is a homeless women sleeping in my room. Someone also has taken the liberty to help themselves to the food I bought even though it was labeled.... overall a very not good stay. Will never return to this hostel. Additionally they force you to pay a membership fee... which is just a cash cow. This place is by far the worst hostel I’ve ever stayed in.
Was really good when I went in summer. Better than expected. Good location, dirt cheap, and you get complementary breakfast.
great hostel! big place but very clean and the rooms are divided out well to give you privacy even in the communal bunks. luggage storage is available in lockers in the basement for during the day after you check out (automated machine, $4) which was super convenient. overall felt safe, cheerful, clean and fun. great place to stay!
Room: The rooms were okay, with not much beyond what was expected from a hostel (beds and lockers with maybe a chair). It would have been nice if the mattresses were not as noisy to move around on. Also, curtains seem common in hostels these days, and it would have been a nice addition for added privacy.
Services: Much of what you’d expect from a hostel was there, such as free breakfast and laundry services. But don’t expect much more. Bathrooms were dated, but functional with a not so great shower pressure. There was no bar, but a small place to gather downstairs.
Reception: Reception was friendly at times depending on who was working at that shift. Requests were met with half-bothered responses on occasions, as if I was an annoyance.
People/atmosphere: Wasn’t that great considering many of the rooms were filled with school groups or international students who kept to their own groups. If you’re wanting to meet others in a relaxed environment, this isn’t the hostel to stay at.
If anybody is trying to find good deals for hotels visit HotelBuIly. com booked a hotel on there and they had the best rates anywhere!

I stayed here with almost 50 other students in my class for a Conference. The service is great and the staff are very helpful. the location is perfect to walk or take transit anywhere you would need to go.
Very cheap, wonderful service and great location. Stayed here in December'18 to attend the American Geophysical Union Fall 2018 conference. Breakfast is complimentary and is delicious. You have the convenience of using the well equipped kitchen to cook for yourself. The staff are great and very welcoming. Also, each evening you have local tours, pub visits, game nights being organised. A wonderful place to stay overall.
An amazing inclusive atmosphere, and staff are attentive and friendly. I would encourage HI as a great alternative to a hotel motel. One issue tho is the refreshments machine in the lobby is cashless. If its late and you're thirsty, they have fresh lemonade, which is thoughtful.
I liked it alot. The lady at the front desk was really nice. They offered a free activity for every day. The breakfast was good. The common area were many things you could do like billiards, boardgames, guitars...
Great location and very nice staff. I had to cancel twice in the day and still was not charged. Very greatful. The breakfast is great! I want to praise the layout of the 10 bed dorm, which is zigzag shaped and minimized the interference of each other, made me feel like in a 4 bed room.
Beautiful place. The bedrooms are really comfortable, the bathrooms are always clean. I would just improve the elevator because it's rather slow and probably add more options for breakfast
Great option to stay in the middle of DC for cheap.
Haven't stayed in a dorm since I graduated the college and this here is pretty much the same concept only exponentially better.
Spotlessly clean, plenty of space, big dining room, fully equipped kitchen. Feels safe and secure. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Even has breakfast included! All for less than fourty bucks. In the middle of DC. Wow.
Not for a light sleepers though.
Beds and pillows are a bit rough, plenty of street noise, people are moving around in the middle of the night. Would have been a perfect five stars otherwise
A wonderful hostel. The location is absolutely wonderful - an easy walk to the National Mall, as well as two Metro stations to get you wherever you need to go. My boyfriend and I spent five nights here in a four-person co-ed room, and it met our needs perfectly. We'd definitely consider this place for our next trip to DC. You can't do better for the pri!
Thoughts after my second day here was overall very positive. The staff are very helpful and pleasant which is nice after some grinding travel. The dorm rooms with assigned lockers and shared bathroom really surprised me with their cleanliness and utility.
Breakfast is included and available on the second level. The congenial kitchen staff directs you to all the available utensils and satisfying food and drink like biscuits, breakfast sausages, boiled eggs and good orange juice. There are personal bins in the kitchen to keep your food at ambient temperature or chilled in several commercial fridges, so you can prep your own meals as you desire.
From what I saw, the guests range here from kids to college age to retirement age people, so the hostel caters to pretty much everyone. Because there is a single elevator, it can get crowded though, so people in good physical health can use the seemingly spiral stairwell for an alternative.
For anyone on a budget and looking for a inexpensive stay in a prime location in Washington DC should seriously consider the HI DC Hostel.
Addendum: Anyone planning a stay more than four days should purchase a yearly HI Hostel membership for $18, otherwise there is $4 per day charge added during check in process.
I loved staying here. I had a private room but was still able to socialize and meet new people. I thought I would feel weird being older, but it wasn’t weird at all. Will definitely be back.
Went to this place last year for Otakon which was great and convenient, was gonna attend again this year there but had to make some minor changes to the booking date. I called 3 days ago no one picked up at all, called again today the lady who answered my phone call kept saying she couldn't hear me that the phones were acting up but yet clearly I could hear people in background talking on the phone lines, she got ignorant with me and hung up, called back two more times and same thing every time same lady. Well consider $700 reservation canceled!
The beds were comfortable and the room was at an affordable price, although they had to be shared with other groups. The breakfast was good, and all of the places I wished to see were within walking distance apart from a few. However, the personnel seemed to be aggravated often.
Great location and price. The free breakfast was good and is the same every morning (biscuits, toast, sausage, boiled eggs, yogurt, granola, a canned fruit, cereal, milk, and coffee). The staff was friendly and the place is clean.
This is such a great place to stay if you're in DC for a couple days. The staff is very friendly and they have daily events you can sign up for during your stay there. I did the tour around DC at night, and it was fantastic. Thank you Monica, and thanks to the rest of the HI Washington DC Hostel Staff. :)
I was just in Washington DC for 5 days. The first 3 nights I stayed in your regular run-of-the mill hotel. The last two nights I decided to move to the DC...read this and 3 more
