How would you rate Busboys and Poets?
I really like the fact that this place shows a love for DC culture. I'm glad that they hire so many people that like what they do. The service is always decent. If you like the eclectic type, this is the place for you. The drinks are super weak. They are also also too expensive. It is the ultimate tourist attraction, because you can take Instagram photos in a cool place and be near all of the bars for the night. Your wait may be long, depending if it is a weekday or night. It is best to go mid-day.
Totally rad restaurant! There's a cool bookstore with progressive books to peruse while you wait for your table. The decor and atmosphere is very inviting yet funky. Lots of fun art and activism posters on the wall to admire while you dine. We hardly waited at all for our table and our server was friendly and informative. I didn't really like my drink -- although with a name like DC Tap Water, I guess I was in for something a little whacky. I had the veggie pasta which was delicious and my girlfriend had a yummy looking salad with deep-fried tofu. They have other tasty drinks and great dessert. We were so happy to support this restaurant. Check it out while your in DC!
Busboys and Poets is my favorite coffee shop in DC. I come here at least once a week to do work on my laptop--the restaurant has an entire section by the windows with a table and couches for people who are studying or working, and provides free wifi until they close at midnight, every day of the week. The atmosphere is hip yet cozy, with awesome playlists, and I always meet really interesting people. The coffee is great, and the servers are very attentive (although when it's a busy time of day, seats are harder to find and servers are more distracted). The menu is creative and vegan-friendly, and I'm a huge fan of their salads and dressings. Later at night they host spoken word and story-telling, and because they take place in a separate section, it's not distracting for people that want to word/just eat dinner/get drinks. Highly recommend if you're looking for a place to work!
I brought my out-of-towner friend here, and she had good things to say about the bookstore, vibe, etc. However, I don't really find the food here all that great. It's nice to show off Busboys and Poets as a venue, but not really as a restaurant.
When I ordered the Mediterranean Burger, it came out burnt. I like burnt meat, at a backyard BBQ, not from a business. Womp womp womp. When you serve a burger on flatbread, there's not much hiding the meat, so it better be cooked correctly!
If I owned a coffeeshop/restaurant it would look a bit like Busboys and Poets. If you wanted to you could make Busboys your office. They have tables set aside for people who want to work. They have great vegan and gluten free menu items. My two go to items are the crabcake sandwich which has plenty of crab served with sweet potato fries. The other is the Mediterranean burger - a lamb burger with yogurt sauce. Great environment to talk and hangout with friends.
Very interesting spot for any meal of the day. There's a partial library near the waiting area that you can browse while waiting for your table (and the wait may be long). I think one of the biggest perks is that some of their meat is halal! Ask your waiter to confirm if it's the beef or chicken (or both now) but it's rare to find that option without it being wholly advertised.
I was there for brunch on January 1st, food was great, waitress and everything else was great. the icing on the cake was the manager, I lost my ring in the sink and it tried to help me get it out but wasn't able. I have to add that the restaurant was pack that day for brunch so I appreciate him taking his time to help me for 30 mins. but the good news he was able to get a plumber a couple days later and get my ring out. I am thankful for all of his help!
We held our wedding rehearsal dinner here (in the Langston Room) and it was such a unique and wonderful venue. We got tons of compliments and people really loved the food and the vibe of the place. The service was also excellent. The day of, I had to make some headcount changes and they were super understanding.
We came here on a Friday around 1pm wanting breakfast food only to find out they stop serving at 11am! SAD FACE.
We ended up splitting the chicken panini and a cup of chicken barley soup.
The panini came with grilled chicken, caramelized onions, tomato, lettuce, pepper jack cheese with a chipotle mayo. It wasn't anything spectacular, same with the soup.
The chai latte was good.
I do enjoy the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's spacious, bright, and has free wifi!
My friend's reaction to me eating here: "Congratulations on becoming a liberal!" Political affiliation aside, the quality food and hipster/indie environment made a great dining experience!
I went for dinner on a Thursday night, so I missed out on poetry readings (unless I was in the wrong room). The place is pretty loud, with people chatting everywhere. I liked the decor- not really a fan of the propaganda but the interior design evoked "Earthy" and provided a good setting for a casual meal.
My burger was great, juicy, big, and organic! (so I think I was being environmentally friendly?) I liked how the sweet potato fries had cinnamon on them (That's what my friend told me, but I'm not sure if they really did have cinnamon -_-'). The banana bread pudding with coconut gelato was excellent. We all got our food pretty fast too, with two waitresses attending to the tables in our area.
All in all, if you're looking to eat at a trendy place, Busboy's is pretty affordable place with great service and good food. You should stop by if you're cruising up14th or exploring U street!
a great place to go and enjoy excellent food with a friend 😊😊😊
I bought some books then sat down to read in one of their comfortable chairs. For lunch I had a delicious salad and an iced coffee. The service was excellent. It's a bit expensive but worth it IMO.
This, or the 5th and K location, is my favorite place in D.C. to get work done. I work as a digital consultant for a non-profit, and I have yet to find a better working environment. The library might be the 'best' location, but I want to enjoy myself while I work.
It's always a warm, artsy environment. Great people, great staff, and great food.
Love the music, love the books, and love the events you host!
I mean wow. This place is just awesome. Bookshop opn during the night connected to a restaurant? I say yes!! And the food was very tasty.
Greaaat atmosphere, food was pretty good. Enjoyed my time. Artwork was really cool and avaliable to purchase.
Really nice place. Great desert menu and kind service. Only problem is despite enormous space it gets quite packed due to popularity.
I check out BB & Poets whenever I visit DC. Great atmosphere and my nonvegan friends enjoy their options as much as I enjoy the vegan options.
So back home, we place we call chill spots. A chill spot allows you to unwind anytime of the day, especially from a long day at the offices. Bus boys and poets is my chill spot. Great food, great service and awesome books to read, also if you like open mic, they have that too. 😊❤️
Interesting dishes and drinks! Love the combo coffee shop/restaurant/bookstore environment. Had the nachos (unremarkable), fried coconut tofu (good but could have used some spice), and falafel salad (dressing a little bitter but otherwise good).
Came in after leaving Marvin's around 1140. BB&P has a great selection of books. Found one that crossed my interest for a gift to my bro. Bought it. During the purchase the lady was very rude. I mean not that rude, but not that nice. Maybe she was tired. Any way I purchased it about 1145. As I was walking out another book caught my eye. Went to the register to buy it and she told me she just closed the register. 10 min before they were closing. I was just there 65 seconds ago. WTH??? So I couldn't get the book and they were still open. All I'm saying is that the level of customer service should exceed the customer. If you want to present your business at the level or environment that u are in then you will never grow to your full potential. Meaning that the city can be rude and other things, but you're a business and should always be above that.
Came here for a nice coffee date with friends. I ordered a cappuccino and was not impressed. The cappuccino took a long time to make and the foam was not very frothy. There is a mix of people eating full meals to having cups of coffee. I would probably come here for a quick coffee with coworkers. I wouldn't come here if I was trying to show a tourist the best coffee in DC. Our waitress was very attentive and apologetic for the coffee taking so long to get to the table. Parking around here is difficult, I would metro or taxi here.
Probably my new favorite BB&P location. Friendly service, amazing food, great drinks and lively atmosphere, what more could you ask for!
Great environment and even better food and drinks.
Quintessential DC. Good food. Great crowd. Lively atmosphere.
wide variety of fresh foods. great for brunch. many vegan and vegetarian options.
Loved working there and then getting something healhy to snack on. A bit pricey but great environment. Wish we had something like this in Santa Monica.
While it serves great food like all of the other Busboys and Poets locations, this location is configured for efficiency over design and comfort in some areas. The tables are close together making Saturday brunch a hectic experience with waiters and new patrons squeezing past in the seating area. Get a booth is you can or table on the edge. Other than the somewhat overloaded table density the location provides the typical Busboys and Poets experience of good food and nice atmosphere.
I've been to Busboys like a bajillion times, so some of the charm has worn off, but it's easily one of the most consistent spots in DC for a good bite to eat. They have a large selection of really good vegan options, a cool vibe, and surprisingly affordable/consistent prices. Plus, lots of great events like the 11th Hour Poetry Slam (once per month), and a nice little bookstore.
Diverse menu, interesting atmosphere, attentive and friendly staff. I really enjoyed it here. It is worth visiting. Open floor plan is great visually but makes it kind of loud.
Perfect for brunch or getting a couple of hours of light work in. The staff is friendly and casual. The atmosphere is great and the food is fine.
You can never go wrong with bus boys! They feature an exiting menu that has options to fit even the pickiest of eaters. The food is spectacular, service is always pretty good too. The library and different events they feature is always a good time. The place is just electric and buzzing with great vibes. Do try the lasagne and the DC tap water! For bunch the Oaxaca omelette is amazing! Wash it all down with a lempom, you won't regret it!
Great food, service, very easy to get to from the train station. Nice atmosphere. There's poetry, signing, politics and organic local food choices year round. Great place overall.
Lovely foood. Lovelier staff.
Last time i was there was three years back. But i still loved it. They have maintained diversity and a lovely menu.
I love the cute little bookshop which is right across from there. It adds that much to your Sunday morning / noon.
Best place for brunch.
Go for the events, come back for the food. Bus boys and poets is an amazing and under appreciated chain that has incredible potential to turn any day into a fantastic one.
My first impression when I walked into Busboys and Poets was that it was a LOT larger than I anticipated! Yes, there is a small bookstore section, but I was surprised that the dining area was big! We asked for a table of 4 on a Friday evening, and was told that it may take some time. No worries, we hung out at a bar and ordered a drink. Luckily, the table became available before we even finished our drink!
The food was great (I ordered the shrimp and chicken chorizo pasta) and the server was very attentive as well. We sat by the window and I loved that it brought in a lot of natural light as well as provided me an opportunity to people watch.
Great place to go. Very welcoming and gives a great vibe. Food is amazing. I'd definitely go again.
Super beautiful and vivid interior. It's a very interesting mix of restaurant, lounge, library and the service is excellent for the venue. Be patient if you arrive for lunch without a reservation, then can be a little crowded at times. But the food is definitely worth the wait.
A great environment accompanied by good food! This place is very unique, not very often you find a bookstore, lounge, and bar in the same place! Great atmosphere and the menu has plenty of vegetarian options too. Interesting variety of food, most of which are tasty! I have to say the prices are a little bit expensive, but it's a great spot to try out!
Whenever I'm in DC I make a point to stop here. The service is always spot on and your food comes out fast and fresh.
Busboy and Poets is a DC staple and a must for anyone visiting the area looking for delicious food.
I recommend the Sweet Potato Pancakes (brunch) or the Salmon entree (dinner). Wash it down with a DC Tap Water.
I had the best experience!
Amazing food Great service.
I had the lamb burger and it reminded me of my favorite Cofte Cabab I made just like the best restaurants in Jerusalem.
It served with quinoa tabouli salad made to perfection.
I'll probably be back tonight ;)
Loved the layout, decor, and atmosphere! Good food and coffee! nice service too
This is a very cool restaurant. The food is great and the atmosphere is fun! There's even a section that sells books (though you can find them cheaper on Amazon). I go here a few times each year, especially if friends are visiting from out of town. It has a cool, "D.C." feel to it that my friends always say they love.
Friendly staff, good menu options (including vegetarian/vegan), and nice atmosphere.
I ordered the lamb burger and it was delicious. My side of asparagus was grilled to perfection.
I will definitely return!
Came here after dinner for apple pie and coffee at the bar. The apple pie crust is made with a very light pastry dough and the apples weren't to sweet. Best I've had in a long time. The bartender however, needs to realize that he's working and shouldn't cater to off duty staffers and friends drinking at the bar. He kept giving a group of five people sitting at the end of the bar "on the house" drinks. God forbid, I, a paying customer wants to order a drink and actually pay for it. I eventually gave up, and we almost walked out on the bill after waiting 15 minutes for someone to pick up our credit card and run it. The bartenders just kept walking past and glancing at our credit card and pretending not to hear our requests to pay.
Food is mediocre, service is absolutely terrible. Don't waste your time! And a bit pricey!
Awesome place that has an amazing back story. The books they sell are phenomenal, some I haven't even seen at Barnes and Nobles. The waitress, ohhhhh, I wish I could remember her name was so very accommodating and friendly. She has dreads, a nose piercing... Anyway, please visit this great place of Langston Hughes.
Bustling best way to pass a pricey afternoon in the U street corridor. Do yourself a favor and learn about jazz and history while you're here. And celebrate happy hour with happiness. Love the place, the coffee refill, and wish it were a little less pricey, but this neighborhood has been on the upward trend for a while. I'd love to preserve it for edgy artists forever.
Awesome place. Poetry reading and awesome guests. Food is good with lots of vegan/veg options. interesting crowd.
Busboys and Poets is the perfect place to relax with a book while also enjoying your dinner. In public. Waiting for a table has never been so chill—they have a large selection of books to look through if it gets too busy to be seated right away. The food is top notch and the service is even better. I can't wait to go back!
Great place!!! - I went there with my son - picked up a comic book to read while we waited. Burger and fries and chicken panini were perfectly cooked. Would recommend to anyone looking for a casual dining experience.
The service was good and fast, the food was tasty. It was my first time there so I was under the impression that they have events going on but I guess it's only on special nights. The book store was small and since it was next to the bar, it might not work for someone who's looking for a quiet time to read.
This restaurant is a must for anyone who wants to experience the harmonious future of America. Literacy and inclusion are the first thing on the menu, followed by genuine, southern charm. B&P is a breath of fresh air.
Yes, yes, yes! Easily one of my best memories from visiting D.C! This place was just buzzing with good times, great conversations, amazing food, arts, poetry, you name it. Just come here for any meal and have a great time doing it. If you can catch an event here, even better! Whenever I think D.C. I think Busboys and Poets!
Beverly was amazing, polite, cute, kind....
Lovely place to grab dinner, artistic environment.
Sliders were superb as well as salads...
Overall great experience
The smallish bookstore is well curated and appeals to the liberals intellectuals, anarchists, and other "Woke" folks. It's paired with a much larger cafe with comfortable seating, eclectic decor, and sharp service. The menu is expansive and comprehensive, good for a party of picky eaters, the hungry, or those with dietary restrictions. Traditional fare of the burgers and fried chicken variety does not disappoint.
Original location of this now regional chain of dependable restaurants. Their coffee is good but could be better. The menu isn't very inventive but everything is well executed and delicious. Their poetry programming is quite fun and they seem to have wonderful live performances of different kinds every night of the week!
Awesome atmosphere. Good vegan selections. Our waiter was friendly and really great. Can't wait to go back.
We started with the vegan nachos because of one of our party is vegan. Then I went in on the lemonade and the egg and cheddar burger with sweet potato fries. Lemonade I'd say is quite good and house made but that means no free refills. Protip, order a side of sour cream to dip the sweet potato fries it is amazing. Service as good and the atmosphere is nice. Also check out their book store which has a lot of cool unique items.
Very friendly staff. I don't personally care much for the political/social emphasis of the place - I want to relax and eat my food, and just that. Maybe I just don't get it. Regardless, the food was delicious. My burger and sweet potato fries came out hot and were served with a delicious chipotle mayo.
I don't know that I'd come back, simply because it wasn't my style. But I can see how many people would enjoy it, and everyone can agree when food is great.
We stopped for breakfast. Staff was friendly, service good. Busboy didn't know why the place is called "Busboys and Pets". I thought that was strange 🤔 My cappuccino got the spot after my long flight. 2 eggs with fruit. They could've kept the toast. Nice.
We loved our breakfast at Busboys and Poets. The decor, food, coffee, and service were very well rounded. I highly recommend this place if you're ever in the area!
Very good food, good atmosphere. I love how progressive the entire concept of the restaurant is. There's been a wait both times I've been (two different locations, too) but, since there's a bookstore inside that you can browse, the wait didn't feel too long. It's also very loud most of the time and it's hard to have a conversation. Overall a good place though!
Best parts of a bookstore and a funky, culture-filled restaurant all rolled up into one. Frequent events featuring speakers and performances. The food is delicious and affordable. Would definitely recommend, no question!
Wow. What can I say? The atmosphere, the food. I loved them all. Only problem is that Busboys and Poets can be a bit too lively in the morning, so you might have to shout to have a conversation.
Definitely recommended if you're stopping by Washington!
Delicious, healthy..amazing menu. I had the Egyptian appetizer (enough for a sample for 5), roasted cauliflower salad and added crab cake loaded with crab. On other visits, I've had the famous sweet potato pancakes.. divine! I can highly recommend this lively meeting place for any meal- alone or with friends. : )*****
I came here for the first time and ordered a vegan scramble wrap. It was delicious. A bit on the salty side, but tastey and super filling. I couldn't finish it all. The ambience is cozy despite how large the space is, and I love that there's a book shop.
This is a wonderful place for a date or just to hang out there with friends. The food is Vegan & GREAT!!! They also have open Mic night so that you can show off or watch some wonderful talent. LOVE this place. My daughter Zhane' & I come here often to recite poetry or to just sip, eat, & watch or purchase books.
I absolutely love this place. It's a great Gavin place for friends come and get a place to eat, that into your favorite book. Lots of area places to visit for eating, shopping, strolling just enjoying the local community.
No matter how often I go I'm never disappointed. Everyone should try the fried fish over collards at least once. This place is great for catching up with friends. Great atmosphere. Good people watching.
The atmosphere is really cool & there’s a lot to look at. Their menu has a nice selection, and it’s got a little something for everyone. I had the vegan tuna salad and the Moroccan bean soup; they were delicious! I highly recommended this place.
Try the chicken nachos (no beans for me, but to each his own!). Great atmosphere and good music. Need a place to work but with a little play? This is it. Yes, you can still focus. Nice ambience.
This is one of my favorite places to eat in the DC area. The drinks are good. The food is good. They have tons of vegetarian options also. I had the sweet potato hash on this occasion and it is so yummy.
Had a great almond milk cappuccino at this location. Love the vegan friendly menu. Food was really good. I wish the menu was more customizable. And I wish my waiter had explained more. We ordered pancakes but did not know their only pancake was a sweet potato pancake. Wish that had been more clear. Great spot
I love this place! It's just so *cool*. And not in a pretentious way, either. It's like eating in someone's house, and they have all these cool stories to tell. And the food is delicious. Full bar. Good service. Good book selection, too!
Loved this place! We were staying around the corner and came for breakfast one morning. Everything was so good. We came back the next morning just to get drinks to go. I highly recommend the blueberry bliss tea latte. It was so good.
The decor was eclectic - which I loved - however it is cramped. I loved the little sofas where you could read while sipping, however it's low if sitting for a meal. The book store by the front door is cool and the food was amazing!!
Great staff and amazing service. Their vegan "tuna" salad is great. They have several gluten free options available. Will definitely be back.
I am writing this as I am working from here and sipping on my cup of coffee right now. This is a second home. Food is simply delicious no matter what I get. Staff is so friendly. The vibe is super casual and chic. I smell peace here:-)
Excellent place. Great music, awesome food, divine for vegans/vegetarians and all others too... Beautiful decor... Theatre/books of all different genres from the social issues we face today and struggles of yesteryear right through to philosophical questions around our existence and path going forward. Staff were helpful and attentive, Girson was the bus boy...walked us through the menu and all all the options and permutations. Possibly one of my all time favourite places...
I lived in DC for a year and get back a few times a year for work, and I always try to work my schedule so I can get in for breakfast at Busboys & Poets (usually after catching an early morning flight). It's a great place to sit down to work for a couple hours, and the sweet potato pancakes with turkey sausage are to die for! Plus, what's not to love when you can pick up an excellent new book at the same time?
There grilled cheese and bacon sandwich was super yummy with generous salad! The coffee was ok. Atmosphere was welcoming, open and cozy at the same time. How did they do that?!
Also they have a great and unusual book collection and bookstore attached to the restaurant.
There was a bone splinter in mushroom and steak burger... Caused immediate toothache upon chewing, spat out the food to find this piece of hard bone. They were reasonable to take the item off the bill, however their food preparation obviously requires greater care. Otherwise the sweet potato fries were delicious. Also tried their pizza and sandwich which was excellent
I loved the place. Atmosphere was great. Food awesome.. Our waiter, Brix, gave excellent service.. Very enjoyable experience.
5-Stars... Highly Recommend A Visit.
One of my favorite brunch spots with generous portions and lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Cool atmosphere as well. They also make a darn good soy latte' 9 times out of 10 :)
Visited as part of a large party after a conference. The staff did a wonderful job and the owner and manager greeted each table which was really nice. The food was great and the decor/bookshop leave a person with no reason for impatience while waiting for their food or drinks.
This is a fantastic spot with a wide array of dishes, including many excellent gluten-free selections that are clearly marked on the menu (something that I appreciate). The fried chicken is delicious comfort food.
Wait staff are really friendly and helpful. They don't do reservations online, which typically means a bit of a wait on weekend evenings, but they have a bookstore with a fun selection that you can peruse while you wait, and although they're busy (near capacity) on weekend evenings, I haven't yet needed to wait for a table on a weekday.
The food and the service are wonderful. So much more than a restaurant with a library of art and culture. Would recommend catching a spoken word event as well. We have such a hard time choosing what to eat, because everything is delicious. We've gone for brunch. We've tried their lunch menu. So hopefully we'll go back after 5 to try that menu as well.
Recommend you check this place out. Restaurant with a bookstore inside. No one is bothered by people growing the bookstore or even sitting and looking through the books. Fairly large dining area with a large menu. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Came here for an outing with my friends. Loved the environment, especially the bookstore. The vibe there was absolutely extraordinarily. The food was delicious and our busboy (more so, like a friend) was A+. Next time, I’m in the area, I will visit again!
This location almost never has booths available, which really sucks because unless your at a booth your pretty much getting touched by everyone who walks by. Service here was friendly but also slow. They say us by the door and our food got cold quickly....:which sucks because I am so in love with their food. Every time I go the service just sucks.
We went to Busboys and Poets prior to a show at the Lincoln Theater. It was easy to find and conveniently located. We were able to be seated immediately. Our service was great! I was concerned we would not have enough time to eat and get to the show, but the waiter took our order quickly, the food came out and we got our check with plenty of time. I love how you can pay at the table without having to wait! Try the vegan nachos, they were awesome!
Banana bread bread pudding is to die for! Great atmosphere and location. The catfish is also really great.
A month ago I needed a soft for my niece (sometimes you just can't wait to have something ordered)- love that I could pick up a really adorable children's book late at night! The bookstore side is so useful!
All of the Busboys and Poets locations are excellent I think. I've been to three of them and the experience is very consistent. Great food. Great service. If quiet dining is your pleasure go somwhere else that night. But if a great fun energetic environment is what you're craving. Here's a great place.
Great place to just hang solo and read a book, sip some tea, just Enjoy the vines and music... it's also a great place to meet with friends to eat and have a few drinks. It's nice to find a place where you can comfortably do both! The food is really good... Try the vegan nachos even if you're not vegan!! Drinks are really good as well. Service was quick and friendly. All around 5 stars!!
With a very unique name, this is definitely a very unique place in my opinion.
The Place is huge, they have a lot of seating space and they are really comfortable. There is a lot going on here, you find people drinking beer\ or cocktails or coffee. All in all, it's a place to chill and have a good time.
They offer happy hour with 50% off on selected food items until 7PM and the food was really good. ENJOY!!!!
Lots of healthy food options (vegan, gluten free, hormone free meat, etc). However, depending on what you order, the portions may be somewhat small. It's moderately priced. Not super expensive but not cheap either! They have a nice book selection! I would visit again!
I had a different idea if this place before I got to this location. I was thinking a open mic spot that serves great food. But instead it was more of a hipster vegan location in a gentrified DC. 🤷🏽♂️. The food was good regardless and I enjoyed the mini bookstore in the location. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in this type of establishment
Walk through a quaint bookstore into a large, but cozy restaurant with a slightly funky vibe that serves generous portions of outstanding food. We tried several items, all would make our list to order again. Highly recommend the fried chicken!!! The staff all were very friendly, though I'd give the service a C+ Our server had a great attitude and offered good recommendations, but otherwise was not very attentive (we had to flag him down more than once...)
On the downside, I don't think cocktails is their thing - many of the drinks were too sweet, overpowered by ginger or just missed the mark. A telltale sign was when they served a Manhattan with a lime wedge - huh? And the whiskey sours were barely drinkable... Stick to standard bar fare, beer or wine and you should be ok.
Still - I would definitely come back to this cool spot!
Nice decor, but the food falls way short of the Washington, DC location. Grits not as smooth, fruit not as fresh and appetizing. Sweet potato pancakes were ok. Just didn't really do it for me. Thought that I would check out this location, since learning that it was closer to me. Will probably continue the long commute into DC, unless I hear otherwise from management.
Fantastic food, excellent service...you just need a way to keep non-customers out of your restrooms. I tried to use the facilities twice during my visit today. The first time, a young man with no shirt on was ahead of me for the stall. He went in, and I waited for my turn. After some time, he informed me that he would be a while, and I told him that was fine, i could wait. After a few more minutes he turned on his music and said it was making him uncomfortable that I was waiting. Finally, he asked me to leave so that he could have privacy, which I did. I came back later and there was an older man in the restroom who informed me that if I wanted to use the stall, I had to give him money. I didn't have any cash, so I just held it until I got home. Too bad...you would definitely get 5 stars from me if you could just maintain order in your facilities.
What an experience. We’re from Boston. We have one day in DC. And I’ll tell you what, Angelo crushed it for us. He recommended the best dishes, brought the best wine, and didn’t mind when we asked him to guess how long we’ve been together. A+ experience! Thanks Angelo, we’ll def visit again!
This place is famous! If you wear their t-shirt around town (including at the Capitol building), you will get a thumbs up from many friendly strangers. The food is good, and the servers are friendly. The bookstore has a pretty nice collection of novels and a few eclectic items like tarot cards and note cards. The menu also has many gluten-free and vegan items.
Came here for lunch after another establishment embarrassed a friend and I. Awesome restaurant with awesome waitstaff. We were with a baby and the staff were incredibly accommodating. The food was excellent, the service was great without being overbearing. I had the salmon, my friend had the fried chicken and we also shared the hash. Highly recommended.
Food was great..i got the French toast with fruit and 2 scrambled eggs..very delicious. The Orange juice is freshly squeezed. Also very delicious. The server was very attentive. He earned a tip. Definitely will tell anyone about this spot
Food was good but the staff gives off the feeling that no one wants to be there. We sat at the bar for 10 minutes before someone helped us, and even then it was a "you need something?". It's a shame because it's such a cool spot with a plethora of great food options (vegans/vegetarians have a lot of options here!) but the lack of service makes me not want to go back.
Great little spot for brunch. Love the idea of combing a bookstore and a restaurant. Sure, it's a gimmick, but it's still fun. Food and coffee were good, and the lines were short even on a memorial day Sunday. I'd come back here again when I'm town.
A pretty hip place to eat. Good-looking staff, just saying. Food is great, price is decent, place gets crowded, but there's a variety of books to read at the front while you wait. Good place for a date. Has lots of vegan options too.
I love this place! Although small, their book selection doesn't disappoint and their food is amazing! Especially the salmon, greens and fried chicken. And everyone who works there are helpful and friendly. Really can't ask for more.
It was alright. We couldn’t hear the server talking, since he was mumbling. I asked for a gluten free menu and was given the vegan menu. I was able to get a chicken veggie pizza on gluten free crust with vegan cheese and garlic oil base. It was good. We also had the Shrimp Fritters, small portions but still tasty. Everything was really expensive for being a noisy crowded coffee shop essentially.
Dope spot! I couldn't help but buy books! The vibe was relaxed, the food was good, and the drinks were delicious and not watered down or diluted. The wait for a table can be a long one, but the service, dope energy, good food and bookstore make the wait worth it. Can't wait to go back!
Great breakfast. Fabulous service. Love the setting. Food was tasty. We had 3 different meals and we all enjoyed them
Great place for a date. The place has a great vibe. There might be a wait because it's very popular, but you'll stay entertained in the bookstore. We were there for breakfast but look forward to returning as they have lots of events on the calendar. Everyone was friendly.
I wish I could give his unique place 6 stars.
Great vibes from the staff, they made me feel very welcome. Great art all over the place!
Aside from their incredible book selection, they have a full bar with draught on tap! They also have a food menu which I'll have to try next time I'm here.
My friend and I loved spending some time for brunch here. The place is huge with lovely decor, especially in the back. It has a bustling, young vibe. We both got omelettes and were pleased by the food. The cappuccino was not my favorite, but overall the food was great. Good variety of food. Service was good. Prices are reasonable. And it was fun to take a look at their books. Definitely recommend.
I visited for brunch and the place had a nice atmosphere. I ordered the bagel and lox. The food was reasonable priced for what is served and the wait staff was good too. I took a stroll through the book store to see what they had to offer. I'd like to come back at another time when they have a performance.
I was originally gonna give this a four star review but I couldn't think of any negative things to say. First time coming to a Busboys and Poets. The food was good to me and the service was alright. Server could have been better but I'm not gonna subtract points on a group serving Even though I'm not a vegetarian there is a lot of vegetarian options here but not too much that there is limited options for me. It's like a half and half balance.
Great food. Great atmosphere. The homemade chips are so good. And the sandwiches were great. I'd recommend it.
There was saying long wait so I highly recommend going early (not sure if they take reservations). The service was a little bit slow. The food was pretty good. The coffee was burnt (even the second refill cup). Pretty reasonable pricing and the staff was nice. It's pretty cool they have a bookstore attached to the restaurant.
An incredible meal at a reasonable price. You cannot resist this hipster dive with healthy food and an atmosphere ripe for conversation. I was amused by the ecclectic seating options and local artists art on the wall - for sale no less. The server was appropriately attentive and precise with the order. I enjoyed a stroll around the book / gift shop after the meal. Highly recommend!
Relaxing and most people are very friendly. Some more than others. But that is the way it is in most places. They make gorgeous lattes, frozen cappuccinos and some great cheese platters and beautiful salads. You can build the salads yourself. They're excellent. I rarely eat meat outside my home because of the type of meat I eat. So I'm not a vegetarian, but unless I can find a restaurant that serves halal, I eat at home. But Tryst is a comfortable place to come to for hot or cold drinks. Sit back and enjoy.
If you are in DC, this is one of the quintessential places to visit, whether you are an art lover or a foodie. This location has a combo to whet your appetite and interest. They don’t take reservation so you may want to get there on time to join the queue to get a table. Once you do, it doesn’t take long before you receive your order.
What makes this place interesting is, it has a library/bookstore in the same location and they apparently do art events such as poetry and spoken work on different days.
I truly enjoyed visiting this place! It’s really great for brunch. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great as well. The place is essentially a combination of a cafe/restaurant and a bookstore so the decor is very cute. I visited two different locations and both were spectacular. The staff was also very friendly. I would highly recommend going to busboys and poets!!
One of my favourite cafes in Washington. Really friendly place. Great food, loved the way they made the French toast. A very relaxing ambiance. Plus a bookshop. Have been a few times. Great place to bring a friend.
Food AND books! Two of my favorite things. Food is nicely seasoned and presented in good sized portions. The book selection stays current and relevant. Love this place.
This place is incredible. Everything is delicious, made-to-order, and beautifully served. As someone with dietary restrictions, the menu was easy to navigate and my options were plentiful.
Absolutely coming back the next time I'm in the city.
Super hip restaurant. Would be perfect for studying/ meeting. Service was really quick and it wasn’t very busy for a Wednesday morning around 9 am. The hot chocolate was some of the best I’ve had!! The French toast was delicious and I got the eggs Benedict and it wasn’t the best I’ve had but was still good. The bathrooms had music blaring loud and I wasn’t expecting that walking into the bathroom.
Lovely Place always bustling with activity, and the food is very good. Service is pretty good as well but it does get very busy often. Reservations are recommended. They have several locations and they are all the same great quality which is a big plus in my opinion. The other special thing about it that sets it apart from other cases is the variety of activities they house around art culture and Society. So it is not only great food but also food for thought!
Lots of delicious food with plenty of vegan and veg options. Very nice location but can be a little noisy during peak hours. Service was top notch. Definitely can't go wrong here as there's something on the menu for everyone. Highly recommended!
Great place to go out with friends. Big one with full of people. Expect some wait time during busy hours. Fun trivia, cool art, great food and presentation. Recommend it 👌
The ambience, food and service is superb. Had their fried chicken with mash and collard greens. It was crispy and tender, plus its halal. Also enjoyed my dessert platter and coffee.
Awesome culinary and social experience. Top-notch service. Very comfortable space. Liked the attached bookstore as well.
I love this place. The brunch menu is fantastic. I've had the Iraqi corned beef hash twice and it is amazing. Today my bartender was Kwame (sorry about the spelling) and he was so friendly. He shook customers hands and was always so polite and attentive. I would highly recommend this place.
I've been to Busboys And Poets a few times over the years, and at different locations in the metro area. It's always guaranteed to be a good, chill time with SUPER hippie vibes. As the name suggests, regularly this bar/restaurant features activists, artists and performers that engage the patrons.
Adjacent to the dining area you'll find an actual bookstore featuring some of the most recent best sellers, a few classic faves, and some indie hits for all ages. Seriously, after I've eaten I typically wander around the bookstore to see if I can come across anything that catches my attention. And yes, there have been a few times where I grabbed something to take home.
There's also a cute little common area for those of you who like to bring your laptop on the go. The food is great. The vibes are dope. Middle ground prices. If you haven't checked out this DC staple yet, I highly recommend it.
Why not five stars? When it's slightly busy the kitchen takes quite a while to bring food out (even a salad). Also, some of the menu items are priced higher than I would like, but not completely unreasonable.
One star because I had no option of giving zero.
We went here, party of five, on Sunday, July 21 for Brunch based on the great reviews and reputation this place has.
All of us are sick! Constant vomiting and Diarrhea, for four days! I could muster up the strength to write a review just today because me and my family can’t even get up from our beds. Consulted our family physician and we were told all of us have food poisoning.
Sent a complaint to the DC Food Safety Office. Called the restaurant and told them also. Wrote the same review on yelp too.
Disappointed and frustrated that our entire week was ruined just because of one brunch.
I love this restaurant! It has an incredible amount of vegetarian/vegan options, and all of them are delicious. I love their coffee, and they have a cool selection of lattes. The staff are always amazing, and the whole place feels very accepting and inclusive. The bookstore is lovely, too. It has lots of unique books and good current events stuff. It’s a smidge pricey, but still fairly reasonable for DC. They do have a weird rule about no laptops in certain areas of the restaurant... but you can just ask a server and they’ll tell you where to sit. I highly recommend!
First of all, the bookstore would be reason enough to go to this restaurant. It has an awesome and thoughtful selection of books. The staff are friendly and helpful. Then there’s the food! Not only is it delicious, but I, a staunch omnivore, can eat with my vegan and gf friends and still enjoy a lamb burger. Yum.
Food was excellent. Enjoyed a full meal didn't feel stuffed afterwards. Thought it would be trendy but actually felt like great place to hang regularly. Love the historic connection.
The place is absolutely fabulous. Who ever came up with the concept is genius. It's such an eclectic restaurant. You can be seated on a couch, a huge comfy chair or a table. Great place for groups. The entire menu is vegan with so many options. I had the beans & wild rice which was very good. Also tried the mac and cheese which was pretty good. The bookstore in the front has so many great books and little fun items to buy.
Fun DC atmosphere. My companion is a teacher. So, she was very excited about the bookstore element.
The food was delicious and of good portions. I had the salmon and it was cooked perfectly. The rice was extremely tasty. Service wasn't overly attentive which I like.
This location has a sort of chill community vibe. It's a great spot to enjoy dinner, coffee and drinks during your night out on U Street. Get a little tipsy and go for a walk around Meridian Hill Park close by. Vegetarian and vegan friendly, which is a plus when hanging out with a diverse friend group.
Such a unique experience for eyes, ears, and tummies! B&P has the best and most varied options for food sensitivities I've seen. And unlike others I've encountered, their vegan and gluten free selections do not compromise on taste. Everything is yummy and beautifully presented. My carnivorous son helped himself repeatedly to my tofu (which he's never done anywhere else), and said, of his appetizer, "These are the best nachos I've ever tasted!"
I went for brunch on a Sunday. It was crowded but they did a decent job getting us a table; we waited for around 15 minutes. The food was good and they have many options for coffee. Our waiter was really nice but in general they were all over the place with the orders (other tables that were sat later were served before us). Overall, though, it's a cool place for people that like books and a chill vibe.
Omelette was great. Bit loud. Great service. Books selection is just focused on best sellers. They wear pride shirts...but the books selection is not that vast to include the 'rainbow' literature. They have a section on gender identity though...
Some serious vegan comfort food. So good! Satisfy all your cravings in a plant based way! I will want your food until the next time I get it! The fried chicken was better than real chicken, mac and cheese is so rich, and the crab cakes are amazing. Please open more locations ASAP
great spot... inexpensive, friendly casual atmosphere. i like the food and the vegetarian options are well thought out. Also a great spot to grab something and jump on wifi. the bookstore is super cool and the event space hosts good performance art and community panels. keep up the good work B&P!
This place is pretty cool. With over 1k reviews, I had to stop in and check it out. Busboys and Poets is a bookstore with a full bar. They serve breakfast items and brunch.
We visited on a Sunday around 1PM. I noticed that they had a huge patio and it was packed. This is definitely the TO GO breakfast from what I can tell. The restaurant was full and we managed to get sat right away.
The menu consists of salads, breakfast items, paninis, soups, and much more. Mimosas are $5 during weekend. Our food came out fast. I enjoyed my time here.
I was kinda nervous at first to try the grits. Northern places never make good grits to me 😐 However the grits ended up good ! Pleasantly surprised. Food was great! I got french toast, eggs, bacon, and grits. If you order the french toast be aware they are HUGE! Good though. They will give you a small cup of syrup for the toast. It may look small but the 1 cup is all you should need whether you choose to dip or dump! If I ever come back to DC I will be returning here!
Great vegan breakfast options! The tofu scramble was delicious and the home fries are worth the visit all by themselves. The Oaxaca omelette (not vegan) was great too, the beans and guacamole combine for a great flavor. Staff was very friendly and browsing the bookstore is a nice addition to brunch.
Excellent service! Plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. We shared the vegan pizza in two people, and also had some French fries. The drinks menu includes wines, beers, and cocktails for every taste. We did not feel rushed and were able to enjoy our meal. Great location, close to bus stops and the subway.
Busboys is a local institution and for good reason. Everything about being here screams home, from the bookshop to the combination of tables and chairs and couches, to the menu that's familiar while still being special. It's one of those spots that has something for everyone and great for family and friend groups with different preferences. They also host events regularly and do a great job of giving a platform to local activists.
Always a great and chill place to be.
The atmosphere is awesome and so is the food.
Chicken is halal and they have lots of organic ingredients which is awesome.
They also have Gluten Free options along with Vegan options as well!
So a bit of something for everyone :)
Prices are very reasonable with the portions as well and the staff is super friendly :)
Had a great time with my sisters. I had the fried chicken dinner and it was amazing! I felt like the big elbowed auntie was in the kitchen cooking our meals 😜. The others had turkey burger, sweet potato fries and salmon, greens, rice
Good vibes, excellent food at reasonable prices. Waitstaff is friendly & competent. A good casual place for lunch or dinner. A great bookstore too.
The crowds awaiting tell you that there is certainly something special
here. Uber Casual. If you want to browse their book store while waiting for a table you will find a great selection that seems curated. The food is great, plentiful and reasonably priced. It is our must stop when visiting DC. The late, great Langston Hughes inspired the name.
We tried Shrimp and Grits and Crab Cakes, both were delicious. Our waiter was very prompt and knowledgeable. Food came out fast. Love the decor!
Try the vegan sliders! They’re awesome. They also have pretty strong drinks too, depending on who is making the drinks. My roommate used to work at Busboys so I got so much great food from her. The environment is even better though. Definitely a great date spot if you guys are into spoken word, music, or just a chill atmosphere. Lots of cool books in the bookstore side, too.
Tart, fresh-squeezed orange juice coupled with insanely delicious sweet potato hash, beautiful portraits of activists and justice leaders, as well as a bookstore I could have perused for hours and hours full of black and brown authors and poets, resistance craft books, and women opened and designed temporary tattoos... This is a DC can't-miss spot.
Take friends and plan time to hang in the bookstore and make a trip over to the DuPont farmers market if you're prepared to have a fully lovely morning
I went with some friends who are into vegan and healthy eating, which I admit, doesn't interest me. We shared the vegan nachos and they were pretty good. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and sweet potatoe fries, which was very good. Beware, the sauce on the sandwich is very spicy. My son had a burger and fries. Very good as well. The servers are very friendly and accommodating.
Amazing brunch spread from Busboys and Poets in Washington DC. Pictured is a chicken omelette with spinach and feta cheese. It comes with a side of wheat toast and cheese grits. Everything was made to perfection and tasted even better than it looks.
Service here was exceptional and the staff will split checks for a party of 8. Jazz provided great service !
Great vegetarian-friendly and vegan-friendly menu with creative choices. Price is good for what you get. Great portions. Awesome atmosphere. A must-go if you're in DC.
Great customer service. Mixed drinks are delicious and the salmon with rice and asparagus is SO good.
I really enjoyed brunch here while visiting DC with a party of 6. Every employee was very nice and responsive. Food was delicious.
