How would you rate The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception?
The priest is a awesome homilist. He feeds you spiritually. The basilica is beautiful. Daily Mass there is a joy filled experience.
It's SO BEAUTIFUL, warm and inviting. The staff are beyond kind. I love and cherish it's African American history and the roots of its existence.
St. Mary's is in a poverty-beset area of Norfolk. It is a magnificent church that is truly welcoming to all. Services at 5 on Saturday, 9 on Sunday, or my favorite, noon on Sunday, are all beautiful. The homilist, Father Curran, is inspirational. But the choir, oh the choir! And the witness, just like in black Baptist churches. Whatever your ancestry or color, if you are of the human race, you will be happy in this place. Never boring, always uplifting. (Leave a good donation. This church helps the poorest of the poor.)
Outstanding worship experience led by Father James "Jim" Curran. This is the only Basilica (minor) in Virginia and is a beautiful example of late Gothic revival style of parish.
Starting attending in the mid 40's, was a flower girl in a wedding. Attended a funeral. I loved this church. I quit in the late 50's. Would like to join this beautiful Basilica.
St. Mary's is the most welcoming church I've been to. Father Jim is inspiring and challenges you to be more Christ-like every service. Everytime I go, it feels like I've come back home.
Everyone makes you feel equal a friendly atmosphere
Fr Curran teaches as he speak and I learn. The atmosphere within is pleasant and friendly. I love being there for any occasion.
The glory of God is always full in this place of worship
Love this church..its my home..I'd never ever leave it..even if im not able to be there..its in my heart always. Love everyone there. Great people.
I have been to Mass a few times and I went to one of Christmas programs. I went today, Palm Sunday, and I throughly enjoyed myself. I will be going back. Father Jim is very passionate in his sharing the Word of God.
I know it shouldn’t matter what church we attend as long as we’re praising the Lord but I do love the vibe here! Everyone is friendly and you feel at home. The choir sounds amazing and the priest are funny. I wish I live in the area.
Amazing and uplifting service Father Jim & Deacon Calvin are the best! Always an awesome service and music.
Beautiful. Under renovation. St Joe's Chapel is nice.
It's very welcoming and the homilies are relevant and the music is inspiring.
We are blessed to have you in our prayers.
They give away a lot of good stuff for the food bank
Gorgeous Church, people are amazing, mass is so beautiful and Father delivers the best homilies ever!!
I grew up in this church and my mother and grandmother still attend there. It has always for the most part been a family type environment and less churchy...even though I Am no longer religious since 2007...when I do go for special occasions there is always a great message. I love how father Belinda came in and brought in an african vibe to the church especially since most of the members are of african descent..but regardless race has not ever been an issue in this church far as my 28 years of being here. Father jim has great messages that all can learn from and he gave a great sermon at my uncle's funeral who passed last year. Yes it may be in tidewater park but I dont see why that is relevant to some of these reviewers especially since the neighborhood for the most part is respectful of the church because they do give back to the neighborhood. Like I said it's always been a family environment here and I appreciate hearing from my mother how involved father jim is with the community. Even though I'm not religious anymore I surely have no problem telling people St. Mary's is the church I grew up in.
Church under renovation. Welcoming congregation. Strong outreach to visitors. Beautiful Mass. Dynamic pastor. Deep sense of Christian message.
They have a great food pantry
an the serve meals but I don't know what day
It's a nice church to go were the people welcome, hear the word of God and nice music.
My husband and I visit there sometimes from Newport News. Love the choir they are the best.
This is a beautiful basilica in downtown Norfolk ...I was an educator at the school before it was forced to close due to low enrollment several years ago.If I ever win the lottery I would reopen the school and with my winnings pay to keep this school open💒. I love St.Mary's
Here, you get to witness the glory of love thru its mass choir. Enliven by Father Jim's fervor to bind all people for God and uplift those souls in their journey, this is home to me and my children.
Wonderfully friendly. Great service. Lots of history. Renovation will be done by December 25th.
Beautiful Easter Vigil mass celebrated by Father Jim Curran and Deacon Bailey
Went for food basket. It was ok. The volunteers Was nice and friendly.
Are you looking for a home away from home. Well this church that might be for you. You can feel the spirit and your soul from your head to your toes. So you can cry speak in tongues and even shout out loud amen. But the one thing that I really loved about this church was our leaders the mother of the church and the father of the church just hearing them preached hug you touch your soul is so warming it's like sitting at home in front of a fire with cozy slipper is in a cup of warm hot chocolate. I've only been here three times and I'm ready to call this my church home. My kids love it my husband loves it and who am I to complain Jesus loves it. The music makes you want to jump out of your seat like you're at a party like you're at MP Ultra Lounge but it's a Christian sorry is a Catholic sanctuary outside of that it can be your Sanctuary too. So are you looking for a church home? Are you tired of going to sleep at church every Sunday.? Are you tired of your children getting bored and Sunday classes that they don't want to pay attention to? Well my answers to this was yes it's so I chose to pick up my children from the last surgery went to and move on to this beautiful wonderful home that we can praise and worship and spend time together as one family so that's what you're looking for come on down doors are always open.
Basilica is such a joyful worship place. So very wonderful to call it home.
They serve FREE good hot meals EVERY MON, WED, THURS, AND FRIDAY @ 1 PM. THEY ALSO HAVE A SPECTACULAR FOOD PANTRY EVERY WED & THURS @ 9 AM.
I THANK JEHOVAH FOR THEM!!!!
It is a really good church. They help you with food, worship and anything else you need.
Very uplifting, Fr. Jims homily and the beautiful music is a spritual way of ending and beginning a week.
Father Jim is very passionate and is very good in interpreting the gospel in modern times. Music is soul shaking. Mass does sometimes go over but it is well worth it. It is being renovated but it is the church (people) that really makes it shine. If you have time, please volunteer at their soup kitchen. Have a blessed day!
I haven't attended any church services however, I do volunteer at their food pantry. Its every Wed & Thurs starting at 930 I believe until 1130. Just show up! It doesn't matter if you make all the money or none of the money lol. Everyone leaves with food. All of the members are kind, welcoming and pleasant.
Volunteers are always needed. Sign up at the foodbankss site or show up!
They feed those who can't provide for themself daily they deserve a 5 star but some people are there because they have to and it shows
Very warm and friendly congregation. The music was awesome
