How would you rate Southern Kitchen?
The restaurant is small and we were sitting so close to the people next to us, luckily they were nice! The jalapeño hushpuppies lacked flavor. The fried chicken was great and my husband said that the catfish was good. Mac & cheese, candied yams & the corn cake were excellent. Overall the food was good & the portions were large but I felt that it was a little overpriced.
Heard so much about this place. So I tried the fried catfish sandwich meal of some sort, the peach cobbler & Strawberry lemonade. The driest sandwich I've ever had between two pieces of bread. Literally just laid two pieces of bread over the overfried catfish fillet and a pickle, tomato& lettuce to go with it...no mayo, sauce nothing..this was a TG order btw . The cobbler was a diabetic shock waiting to happen. It tasted like sugar with bits of peach and runny dough in it to sum it up..not impressed with either and the Lemonade was fairly tasty but I wouldn't rave about it. The place was tiny and crowded and idk dirty or it could of been due to being crowded. It has been awhile since I went so I'm not sure if it has changed but I won't know because I'll never return. Overpaid for what I got probably would of faired better buying and making it myself. I look at it this way if you can make a sandwich taste like sawdust then what makes you think I want to try something else at the same place where it would take more effort to make?? Nahh I'll pass..It's for some and not others..I am the other..
ts OK, fried chicken was huge, but unseasoned. Mac and cheese and red beans with rice were delicious had the strawberry lemonade not sure not everyone is raving about. Still a good place to try at least once.
Love the cajun catfish bites and fried chicken.
The Fried Chicken was still fighting back, nothing special about the seasoning. Slow, not lunch-hour friendly. Cornbread pancake was interesting. Greens tasted like salty wet bacon. Mac 'n cheese was just ok, the once melted cheese on top had turned solid. The Strawberry Lemonade and generous serving of Peach Cobbler were delicious!
Great food. Cozy and friendly staff. Ok did I say great food? Great food. Southern cooking at its best.
Best darn southern restaurant in the Pacific NW. Everytime I leave after a full belly. I can't wait to return. Very friendly staff. Makes you feel like being in the south. Talk about southern comfort. THE BEST!!!
The food was pretty good, but the service straight up SUCKED. Once our food was brought to the table, not one word said to us, no refills on drinks, nothing. Not even eye contact when we tried getting her attention. I would recommend maybe getting to go if you even want to try this place. I won't be back though.
Love this place! It's a touch of home!
The food is authentic and delicious! My wife is from Louisiana and had catfish with red beans and rice. Although she was expecting a little more kick in the seasoning of the beans she said it brought back memories of childhood and the food she grew up on. I had chicken fried steak with eggs and grits. The chicken fried steak was spot on! Gravy was delicious, eggs were just as requested, and the grits were smooth and creamy.( Needed salt in the cooking process). Over all, the best breakfast I've had since coming to WA in April.
I use to live in Tacoma back in the 80's and SK was bomb back then. But now not so much. Now you order the catfish and they bring you something like a fillet of fish. The cornbread is dry and the food just doesn't taste very good anymore. I can't believe it was on Diners, Drive in's and Dives. It sucks now.
This is coming from a Texan transplanted into the PNW, and Southern Kitchen has the some of the best fried chicken I've ever tasted! All their food is great, and it it super family friendly. We come down from Seattle whenever we can.
This place is the definition of Southern food. Seriously! Not only is their food AMAZING, the service is wonderful too! The energy inside Southern Kitchen is positively contagious. If you're looking for good Southern food and a place where you can enjoy yourself, this is the place to be!
Let me tell you bout the best place to grab a pork free bite. Its The Southern Kitchen. The world's friendliest staff, the best biscuits and gravy (don't tell my grandma) and all at a very good price. If you have the time to sit and eat, well this is where you should pull your chair up.
Great food and great service. Kind if pricey, buy you definitely get your money's worth. I've had the fried catfish, macaroni and cheese, dressing, black eyed peas, and flapjacks. If you're craving soul food but don't make it yourself, this is the place to go!!
A bit pricey for what you get. I thought my catfish was pretty bland. I tried grits again, but they still taste bland to me. The chicken fried steak that my wife had was excellent. The best thing about the place was the huge sweet tea--now that is Southern. I have a feeling this place was probably more affordable before Guy Fieri came to town with Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
The guy with the Afro and the Mexican lady always serves us well,it's the other one with short hair that we have not had good experience with. No refill,no check,no silverware, forgot what we ordered, always checked up on the table next to us and not ours. Seem like he focused more on the white people rather than us "black" people. After the second time my family and I just try not to have him as our server. 3 strikes we gone. We want to support local businesses but it's not as good as back in the day growing up here. The only thing keeping us from going elsewhere are the memories we have with family here.
Delicious! Everything tastef great and service was fast and friendly. I highly recommend the mac and cheese, it was amazing and I will go back if for no other reason then that!
Visiting from LA I love this place the food is great and the service is incomparable
The food was so disappointing. I ordered chicken and Mac and yams. The macaroni and cheese was ice cold so I let the waiter know. He brought me over another plate of burnt Mac and cheese and insisted that I scrape the old cold Mac off as though I was trying to get over. The yams was canned and also cold as well as tasteless. On our way out the older gentleman taking the cash asked how was everything? So I told him. He immediately changed his tone in his voice and said "You should have said something before it's time to pay" I said I did say something and you asked me! He did take a drop off our ticket. I don't understand why a business thinksthat every customer is trying to get over! I will never go out to eat with my husband if we can not pay!!!! We go out expecting good food, good service and a good time!
The food is fantastic. If you want a real southern experience in the northwest, this is the place to go. The sweet tea is very sweet and yummy. The last time I was there, people were sharing food across tables and it was a very fun and social experience. We had a great time and try to get back here as often as we can!
If you have absolutely no taste buds.... By all means ENJOY!!! This is the farthest thing from real home cooked southern food you can get. Literally everything on my plate was either boxed or canned. Its an alright atmosphere with alright emoloyees. NOTHING to film a food show about and definitely not worth $50 for 2 adults.
The customer service is great and the price you pay you get more than your moneys worth. Its the taste of the south what I'm used to since its the kinda food I grew up on. FYI this place has been featured on the food network and you can see why when you try the food
This place is so over rated!!! The food is okay!! Don't get the Mac and cheese or the cornbread dressing because you will be disappointed. It's over priced for the quality! They do have good Lemonade's and tea!! But you will be disappointed with the entree's, I don't know why Guy from drivers dine ins and dives was at this place. So over rated!!!
Have been coming here off and on for years. They have ALWAYS been busy. I wouldn't recommend coming when you are starving since the wait time can be long. But you get more food for your money. My food has always come hot. I love their chicken wing dinner. Their sweet tea is AMAZING!
Awesome foods! Unbelievable atmosphere food. You don't have to look for something out of the ordinary. Each dish is individual with it's own special flavors. Should be one more star so I could It a 6!
My Mom was born in S.C. They do it BETTER THAN RIGHT HERE! FOOD IS AMAZING! LARGE PORTIONS. EXTREMELY KIND, ATTENTIVE STAFF.
Made me miss my Momma. Right down to her 'Sweet Tea'.
Delicious chicken, fried okra, and greens. Mac and cheese was a little bland but in light of everything else+the good service its no problem, plus was great with a little hot sauce. Fried catfish was decent as well...not a fish person myself but the person I was eating with is from Florida and thought it as good as anything cooked in the south.
Chicken was served hot, skin was crunchy and the meat moist. Service was courteous and quick. The crew has been there for years.
My family is from Kentucky which may not be southern enough for some people but this kind of food is like what Nana used to make... except NOT. I've been twice and the word I would use to describe this place is bland. All of the food could do with seasoning. The fried chicken is on par with KFC, the catfish breading had no seasoning, the mac and cheese is just noodles and cheese, the mashed potatoes and gravy were gummy. The greens and okra were okay. And IMO corn bread should be savory, crumbly with a crunchy crust ready for butter not sweet. The service is slow, we waited an hour and a half for food. The sweet tea was good, that's about all I can say.
Promising, but ultimately disappointing. Started of with impressive mango lemonade. I ordered the two whole catfish which was cheaper than the two fillets. Added "buttered corn" (it wasn't) and sweet potatoes (yams). My husband ordered chicken fried steak with same sides. Giant delish hoe cakes (cornbread pancake) quickly came first - yum! Entrees were disappointing. His steak was thin; my fillets were just okay. The sides, though! Uggh! Canned corn (waitress insisted it was frozen) was water logged and unappetizing; sweet potatoes swimming in syrup. I haven't been to the restaurant in some years; can't see a reason to come back again.
Always good! The food is delicious, the people working there are so nice. We stop there on our way to Seattle and we're never disappointed. Love the corn cakes, the macaroni and the brisket. Highly recommend...
You'll never reach 5 stars unless your cooking, lack of seating and environment change. Otherwise a good try on southern food. Disliked the experience, will not return.
I avoid this place. You may not. Short and sweet. I have family down in Moselle, Mississippi that put this places food to shame, when you have a high expectation and it's not met.
We had the bbq beef and it was great. Small personalized place with friendly servers and also the people who come to eat there. No room for the peach cobbler that we planned for desert. Next time we'll have to try leaving room for it.
Had to order take out. The fried chicken was definitely done right, Southern fried, crispy and hooo lick those fingers! You know it was fried and not pressure cooked (meat near the bones not slimy like pressure cooked chicken). Collard greens delicious, cornbread came in the shape of a pancake, also delicious and the mashed potatoes and gravy was great. The only thing is the parking. Still well worth the visit. Would definitely go again!!
I ordered catfish strips....no flavor. I asked for the Cajun order. There were no seasonings on my catfish at all. It was To Go, they did not give me tarter sauce or butter for the hush puppies, or a salt/pepper packet.
The hush puppies were awful. I was born and raised in the deep South, and I do know how hush puppies should taste. These were not even warm and I paid for 3 extra ones....not even barely warm. Heavy, thick, dense, terribly made with zero flavor.
I spent roughly $26 dollars and ate less than half, because it was so bad.
The sweet tea was WAY to sweet - a very syrupy fake sweet taste was really gross. A total waste of my time and money.
I won't be back.
The fried green tomatoes are amazing! The service was great and all the food was unreal. Can't wait to go back!!
Went there last night, not from Wa state. Along with eighty year old aunt from Virginia.
My daughter who lives in Seattle took us there for soul food. She loves the liver and onions dish.
The food was good. Lots of folks and laughter.
What hasn’t left my mind is some elderly African American women with an apron on came out of the kitchen and went to the tables of only white folks and asked them how they were doing. I’m watching her all the while, my daughter turns to me and said did she just over look us.
If they have been in the community over 30 years I’m sure it’s African Americans that has kept them in business. That is the taste that has remained in my brain.
First time there, place was packed (good thing) so we sat at the bar. It took a minute to get our drinks (the sweet tea was delicious). What sold me on this place was the menu of course, as well as the paragraph on their page that stated, "When asked by Guy, what's the key to making good southern food taste like momma's? Gloria says its cooking from scratch, something that's seldom practiced anymore in restaurants." Three of the menu Items we ordered they didn't have. As far as being made from "scratch", the greens were frozen, and the yams tasted like they came from a can. Three hushpuppies came with my meal. They were dry and lacking flavor. The cook kept complaining about it being so busy, and asked the waitress to stop taking orders for a second. Also the cook went outside and talked to a gentlemen near a truck with gloves on, came back in the kitchen grabbed something from a shelf without changing gloves or washing his hands. I will say the mac n cheese was good. Won't be going back.
This place is so good. All the food is just as good as anything you could get in the South with real hushpuppies. Staff is really friendly and attentive. I've never had to wait to order or to get my check.
The food was great, and reasonably priced. The staff quickly realized we had been sitting for an extended amount of time without being helped. The waitress brought us fresh coffee and sweet potatoe pie at no cost to say "thank you" for waiting!!! We will definitely come back. The only draw back is lack of parking and small seating area.
Regrettably i tried this place for the first time. I am from this city. All my friends always brag about this place...
Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes. My girlfriend and I got the chicken fried steak and cream beef over biscuits.
1) they used a regular hamburger patty instead of a cube steak. It was obvious.
2) the biscuits tasted like they were previously frozen and were gross.
3) all the food was bland as all get out.
For being a soul food restaurant they sure lacked all soul in their food.
I will not return here.
For over 25 years Southern Kitchen has been proudly representing Tacoma with its delicious soul food. You'll find Fried Green Tomatoes, Fried Okra, real Strawberry Lemonade, serious Mac n Cheese, Fried Chicken to die for....even Liver n Onions!! Hal-lay-loo!
Breakfast all day - as it should be. The grits can be excellent or sub-par - so beware. Make sure to check out the daily special breakfast during the week. Before 9am, you can walk out good and full + get coffee for less than $10.
The staff here is amazing. Ms. Cassandra is the server I LOVE the most out of a list of standouts. Everyone here is going to take good care of you.
Be aware, parking can be a little crazy at peak times...but don't give up. A space in the lot or the street will show up quickly.
Peach pie is huge🍑🍰. The chicken🍗, okra,🧀 Mac cheese very good. Cozy place for family and friends. Took my daughter. Owner I am hugging, God Bless her Staff and family 🤗🤗
A little pricey 💳💲but
I am going back to try breakfast. 😊
Had high hopes for this place, left slightly disappointed. The service was good and the side dishes were great. The main entrees left something to be desired though. Nothing terrible, but I'm in no hurry to return.
great southern feel and the employees are friendly. southern means catfish so yes they have catfish an its delicious. they've got the usual southern sides, macaroni an chs, greens an cornbread. all of them are down south influenced.
Took breakfast home to the family, and everything was unbelievably tasty. We had pancakes, biscuits and gravy, the meat lovers breakfast, and I had to order a side of the homemade Mac and cheese. And don't even ask about the southern hospitality, I felt like I was right back in North Carolina, the second I walked in the door. Thoroughly impressed. Will be back soon to get some hush puppies!
I always love the Southern Kitchen. There is almost never a wait for a table. Sometimes it's a little busy but the service is always fast. The food is always good. I wish they had a little bit better coffee though.
I ate there and had a great experience. The one guy with the big Afro would really fantastic you should stay a waiter and give up his career as a entertainer. Everybody on the staff including John was fantastic. I suggest you go see the place and you will have a great experience
Had the catfish delight with red beans and cornbread stuffing with brown gravy on top. The catfish was two large boned portions which surprised me. Since a lot of places will serve you smaller portions. Overall a good experience. My only two complaints was the bathroom - only one for the whole restaurant. And you better like your neighbor because seating is tight. Next time, I'll make my order to go. I like a little elbow room when I am eating. Oh parking is limited near the restaurant.
Great southern food... captured all the essence of southern taste including the grease, spice, and hospitality. The deeper fried the better.
Get extra corn pancakes. You will like the hybrid cornbread/pancake combo. .
Great customer service, Big John was really really cool, and a little on the small side! Food was ok and that strawberry lemonade is out of this world- topped with whipped cream who would've thought! Got the brisket to go and it was good. Didn't like the black eyed peas though! Got that back in the day at home feel!
Really great southern-style food and I should know being from the south. Catfish strips are on point. The Cajun ones could have used a little more spice. The corncakes at first were a treat because we were hungry and it was quite a wait. Worth it. Oh and the large mason jars of endless sweet ice tea was the best I've had in this region of the U.S.
Good food, great atmosphere. Pricey, but worth it. Had the chicken fried steak, good size and was delicious. The corn cakes they give you, make it worth visiting just for that.
Upon arrival someone from behind the counter yelled sit wherever you want... we sat ourselves. About 6 minutes later the table directly to our left had not been cleaned. A server came over, walked around us, and cleaned the table. The server took the dishes to the back and came back out and took the drink order of the people who were getting ready to sit down at that table. Mind you we had now been seated for 8 - 10 minutes. He went back to the kitchen, filled the drink order, walked around us again without even a hello. He served their drinks and proceeded to take their food order. Not sure what was happening here and why we were ignored; what I will say that this table happened to be a table of Asian people. No offense to them, but they were properly seated and promptly served. Maybe we did not look like we belonged, or maybe they have enough business that our cash doesn't matter. At any light, I won't be back and I will tell my story to all who ask. Customer service is terrible!
Went here a days ago and spent $60 (plus tip) on dry gross food. Not happy at all. Won't be back. This place when down hill. I know they are packed sometimes they can spend there hard working money on dry gross food but I won't.
This place is awesome. Born and raised in Kentucky and Tennessee for most of my childhood, I've greatly missed legit southern comfort food and this place has it. The sweet tea tastes like it came from my Grandma's kitchen, the chipped beef is yum. They are pork free, so my kosher boyfriend greatly enjoyed eating bacon and sausage. We had a minimal wait, even though it was packed, and the service was great. Reasonably priced, huge portions. Going back soon to try out their dinner menu!
Went on Friday afternoon for lunch. I'm from Alabama so I wasn't sure what to expect. My only experience with Soul Food/Southern Cooking on the West Coast was in Southern California and the joint was busted.
I had the fried fish, mac/cheese, black eyed peas and corn cake. If I have any complaint, the peas could have been better. The food was good. Not grandma home cooked down south great but it was very good. Want to send a shout out to Tereek (spelling) and Paul. They did an excellent job of taking orders, getting folks their food, and cleaning tables. They really worked well together and took good care of the customers.
My first experience and impression of the Southern Kitchen was positive so I will definitely be going back.
Wow! Southern cooking for real. We had the chicken which is wonderful and pan fried corn bread. Super good all of it. Not a huge place but great food, southern for sure.
If you know anything about Southern Cooking get in here...if you don't know a thing get in here...this place will make you forget any diet but you will not regret your decision...I had lunch here with some friends now I've brought my family back to dine...it is incredible! It must be experienced first hand to be understood. The owner came over and I about teared up telling her how much I enjoyed the food! Do yourself a favor and get there...you won't stop going I promise!!!
I LOVE this place! My family is from the south and this food is just as good as stepping into Grandma's kitchen. There hasn't been a single thing I've eaten or drank that I didn't enjoy. Everything is made to order so it come to you nice and fresh. If you ever come to Tacoma and craving some southern flavor, you gotta go to Southern Kitchen.
Eaten here a few times now. The people are friendly and the food is good. Refills cost extra(not a complaint but a heads up because the staff doesn't tell you upfront). That's too minor to deduct a star, just saying.
Otherwise, I'm often drug along because the woman in my life LOVES the chicken, here.
Food is just ok. Expected more given the great reviews. You get a lot of food but most of it is buffet quality at best. Super friendly staff though! (really the only reason for getting as high as 3 stars.) Don't go out of your way just to come here but if you are in the area and don't mind a mean dose of heartburn, stop on by.
Great food, great portions, comfortable atmosphere, and wonderful staff! I really enjoyed the decor and the things on the walls. Learning about the restaurants past and present was enlightening. Signing the chalk wall was fun. If I lived around here, I’d eat there all the time! The macaroni and cheese was amazing and so was the sweet potato pie! 💗
Amazing little hole-in-the-wall restaurant, serving true southern style meals. We came during Sunday evening, the busiest time possible. Staff was working hard and still were good minded and friendly. No lie, we waited a while, but the food was amazing! Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff...makes you feel like home!
Absolutely hands down the best! Fried chicken? The best. Fried okra? The best. Fried catfish? Yep! Awesome people, mason jars of sweet tea and an all around great place for southern food! Definitely check it out!
Great soul food southern dishes. Everything cooked as you order. Not a place to be in a hurry. Lovely helpful staff will explain everything. Wonderful grits!
Southern Kitchen has the best southern food in Washington State. I highly recommend this place especially during the fall and winter. the fried chicken is amazing and the food is very filling. They serve very large portions and everything is cooked to Perfection. I highly recommend this place! Ben our server was awesome Ben was attentive and met all our needs definitely a good waiter! whenever we are in to come up we will come back and visit this place I will tell my family to visit this place as well!
Always amazing food and drinks. The mac and cheese is incredible. The catfish and country fried steak out of this world! Their bread pudding will leave your mouth happy, its got a caramel bourbon type sauce over the top. Kid friendly, and you must try the blackberry lemonade. They make you feel like family here
I simply cannot say enough good things about this treasure of Tacoma. Their food is excellent at reasonable prices. The Colonel has nothing as good as the fried chicken, and the sweet tea is ambrosia. Go there now!
When I need a fix for Southern food and am in the area this is where I recommend. Fried okra fried chicken were delicious got me some sweet tea in a Mason jar! Server was energetic and fun.
This place is great. We just happened to stop by because we where in the area and I was in the mood for mashed potatoes, what good luck!
I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of them before, the food is super good and reasonably priced and the restaurant itself is charming.
Great food. Only one waitress so getting seated and waited on was slow. Still never disappointed. Love, love, love the cornbread!
Amazing food good service love the atmosphere and the overall vibe of this place.. Been here from Portland a, few times and I've always walked away happy with what I get.. Catfish is my favorite thing to get on the menu!!
Moved from Arkansas 2 years ago. This is the only place that reminds me of the south. Great catfish! Hush puppies are on point! I'll be back here soon! Thank you so much for the delicious food and hospitality!
The food and service was impeccable!... just good simple home style food service and atmosphere! I would highly recommend it to anyone else and I will surely go back to enjoy another great meal!
This place is amazing! Awesome local soul food and a very nice staff. It's not that big, nice and cozy. Funky decor, but it fits. Hot sauce is on the table for ya. You have to try the fried chicken, catfish, or liver & onions. Mashed potatoes and collared greens are solid sides and order a mango sweet tea to wash it all down. Or you could just order sweet potato pie or peach cobbler. All of these are must haves. Can't wait to go back!
You must have their strawberry lemonade. I'll admit, that was my reason for going to this restaurant. I had to try it and it was amazing!! The staff were very friendly, the atmosphere was warm, like your mother's kitchen. The breakfast was delicious. I'll definitely be coming back!!
My favorite restaurant on this planet of ours. A fantastic experience and a must have if one is in the area. Good food for a moderate price, and you won't walk away hungry. Guaranteed. The small, hole in the wall look and friendly staff gives the restaurant an undeniably cozy feeling and makes you feel happy. The food also helps with that, being an all-star lineup of classic southern styles ranging from excellent (and my personal favorite) chicken fried steak to more traditional liver and onion. The drinks are also worth it, with many coming in large mason jars and tasting good to boot. I'd recommend the sweet tea if you feel you haven't consumed enough sugar recently and want something that'll rot your teeth. Worth it though. It is not for everyone however, as one would find the menu rather lacking if looking for something say, vegetarian. Plus the small size makes bringing large parties difficult, though not impossible. But if you are going here, you generally won't be a vegetarian and won't be bringing an entire extended family. So if you're in the area and don't mind having to take a nap in your car afterwords, Southern Kitchen is a must.
Great food, better service! The young man that helped us was friendly, outgoing and humorous. Food was really good too! Will definitely be back!
4 stars for great customer service. I got a omelet, which was not up to standards, and did not finish. I'm sure this was because New Years was last night, and people are usually not optimized for work the next day.....I paid, left, and one of the waiters comes out, and refunds my money! I'm not one to complain, so it was refreshing that they actually sought out how they can improve the food.
Excellent customer service I eat here at least once a week & I'm never disappointed with the quality of the food or staff! Everyone is always friendly! My home away from home! I will always go here!
Slappers! That is what my son would say! Everything about this place was on point from the decor to the food to the location, to the staff waving us welcome and come in from the parking lot. Food was exquisite, service was excellent, atmosphere was friendly and we talked amongst our table mates. Really made my job interview in Tacoma worth the drive to eat lunch here before we headed back to Seattle. Thank ya Ba-be!
Absolutely the best chicken and catfish. Lots of food. Yummy fried green tomatoes! Restaurant is in the small side, also not good parking, but worth it.
Don't come here for low-cal meals. Primarily fried foods including the Fried Green Tomatoes which have kept me coming back for over 20 years. Great catfish, cornbread, and Black-eyed peas. Great Southern comfort food including breakfasts.
