How would you rate Guava the Caribbean Food Company?
Like ants on a pile of sugar.
First time I went here was around 2 in the afternoon on a weekend. It had a line out the door and it kept growing after my family and I got in line. It is THE bakery to go to in Los Angeles and I absolutely am glad that I did research and previewed their selection on their website prior to going to the bakery because if I didn't, I would have felt really overwhelmed by their selections because they have so much!
I ended up walking out with their classics such as the potato balls, the meat pies, and the cheese rolls. I tried it because everyone talks about them like they're the best but honestly I thought they were all pretty mediocre and only the potato balls were good because I enjoy mashed potatoes. I wouldn't suggest eating their pastries because there is very skimpy portions of filling in their pastries so you're just eating alot of dough.
The best thing about their bakery--hands down their cakes! My family and I enjoy the checkered cakes and their napolean cake slices. Definitely high-quality cakes that keep us coming back once a month to get our cake fix!
Parking here is a small lot and you might have to put in some effort to find street parking but if you are lucky you will get a parking space just as someone is pulling out like my family and I did.
POTATO BALLS! I could go here every day and never need to eat anything except the potato balls. That being said, they also have amazing breakfast sandwiches, regular sandwiches and pastries. My favorite pastry is the guava cheese pastry because it is a unique flavor that you can't really find anywhere else. If you ever need a birthday cake, or really a cake for any occasion, this is the place to get it! They have a chocolate raspberry cake that is so amazing I brought it back to Colorado with me on a place for my Mom's birthday. And they are not expensive which is always a plus. The lines are always super long but they move quickly and it is totally worth it.
Best bakery in the Valley. I could eat their potato balls every single day. Be warned- lines are really long on weekends. If you are just ordering drinks you can bypass the line. The breakfast sandwiches are large enough for two people if you feel like sharing. All of the pastries are delicious but my favorites are the guava cheese and the chocolate croissant.
Well I guess one has to go to a Porto's to experience the whole thing and be a bit lost in the crowd when you are a rookie! There are so many choices, be sure to browse the counter first, while someone holds you place in line. It is almost required. Get a paper menu and read, there are so many options. The Cuban sandwich is a favorite, after all it is a Cuban restaurant! The bread is so fresh. The fruit empanadas are delightful, The turnovers are an oh so flaky favorite of mine! The Potato balls must be ordered by the dozen (unless you are a rookie and don't understand the process) and the .... well it goes on and on and is too much fun. If you patience for lines it too distracting, call in and then pick it up. The lines move very well and it is a fun trip.
When I first checked out this place, I was immediately impressed by the size and the service. Someone at the door greeted me as I walked in, and I was surprised by how much big this place was--plenty of seating and a lot of selections (pastries, sandwiches, drinks, etc).
Although there were two separate lines with a good number of people in each, because the lines moved fast, I didn't have to wait much. I told the worker it was my first time, and so he offered samples and was very helpful and friendly! I didn't feel rushed, and I was surprised that he gave me a full cheese roll (instead of a small bite size) to sample! I felt like I was talking to a good friend who was hooking me up with the best experience at the bakery. His friendliness definitely bumped my review for this place from 4 stars to 5 stars.
I bought potato balls, cheese rolls, and guava cheese roll, and my favorite out of the three is easily the cheese roll!! The cheese rolls taste even better if you take them home and heat them up for a little mmmmmmmmm.
Good thing this bakery is in socal... otherwise I would be coming here every day and growing horizontally at an exponentially faster rate.
