How would you rate Axum Cafe?
Guess what Ethiopian food resembles in taste? Gujarati food (Gujarat is a state in India). Whenever I am craving Gujarati comfort food, I head down to Axum cafe to get their veggie combo. The spices are slightly different from Gujarati but the veggies, texture and the taste is so similar that you can not easily distinguish between the two. My wife usually doesnt eat mushrooms but their kintishara is so well done that my wife eats it without any hesitation.
Service is very quick and the staff is very friendly. This place is not that big but anyways you shouldnt go here in big groups since eating Ethiopian from one plate isnt very efficient/hygienic.
Parking in Haight is always a challenge so either be patient if you are looking for parking or just opt for public transit/cab.
The food is great, and the service is even better! It's run by a really nice family. The matriarch is always bubbly and full of stories to tell. Her outfits range from Ethiopian dresses to pink velour jumpsuits, and her personality is just as eclectic. When she's not there, her sweet son runs the place. Get the veggie combo for however many people you have. It's delicious!
Get the platter and split it! Great global cuisine and what's more fun than eating with your hands?
Original, authentic and very tasty, especially if you like spicy food.
Africa food. The service is good, it was my first time eat Axum food and I like it. Just eat with your hands!
this lovely ethiopian restaurant has delicious food with a casual atmosphere. it is a great place to experience the cuisine of ethiopia. also, this restaurant is a wonderful place to go with a larger group, where customers can share delectable food.
Great value for great food.
I've lived in this neighborhood for years and their food is always great. My favorite is the tibsie lamb, and the tibsie chicken and veggie combo are also each very satisfying. Family owned, which is becoming more and more rare here in SF, and have regularly won Best of the Bay.
Amazing spicy cooking
huge fan of their veggie combo. healthy and delicious! 👌🏼
Consistently amazing, fresh, and flavorful. Family run (so rare now in SF) with attentive, friendly service. A real neighborhood gem. Healthy and homemade with little oil and no butter used. The honey wine is a perfect pair. Highly recommend the vegetarian combo. We keep coming back and recommending friends
Loved the vegetarian combo and finished off the meal with a steamed milk and Kahlua, which was so tasty
Small and casual family restauraunt. Great food!
Food was delicious but 3/5 of us got sick immediately after. Food was so good it was probably still worth it though. meat is nice and spicy.
Food is excellent!!! Spicy and yummy. The lady who served us is very very nice. Can't wait to go back.
It doesn't look like much but this has some of the best Ethiopian food you'll have.
We love the vegetarian platter. The food is delicious and healthy, the service is fast, the people are friendly, the prices are good!
I've been eating at this place for 20 years. It's still the best Ethiopian food in the entire city. The owners have kept these recipes with them since the old country and you won't get quality teff or anything similar anywhere else.
This place is so delicious. They've been closed for remodeling for a long time and I can't wait til they reopen
Delicious! Loved the fish and vegetable options. Service was a bit slow but it was worth the wait, plus they just reopened. This will definitely be a new regular spot for me 🤗
Was great before and the reboot is even better!
Excellent Food, amazing hosts
Favorite Ethiopian restaurant in town. I've eaten here for more that twenty years and am happy to see them back open with an upgraded interior and food as good as ever. Vegetarian combo for two is my go to but the may dishes I've had were great too.
Authentic and tasty food, nicest service I've ever had.
Great best Ethiopian food ever, excellent service
The ambiance was okay, and the food was so-so. For the price, I would have expected much better.
Haven't had Ethiopian food in years and was happy with the experience. Can't wait to try more and again. Attentive service!
Veggie combo here was great and decent portion to share between 2 folks! It is very spicy, like made-my-friend-raised-on-Sichuanese-food-cry spicy, so come prepared and maybe order some extra injera unless you're a master at the bread ratio.
Best Etheopian in town. Service isn't super fast, but just sit back and take your time at this family run neighborhood gem.
this is my go to place for a quick and healthy dinner. I love their veggie combo (especially the chickpea dish). the portion is the perfect amount for one...read this and 369 more
