How would you rate The Julian Gold Rush Hotel?
We really enjoyed our stay at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel. The room was cute and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, and the afternoon tea was very enjoyable. We greatly appreciated the television-free room, where we could really relax and feel like we were on vacation. We also valued the games available during tea. Overall a wonderful stay, and we hope to go back.
My family was looking forward to visiting for my brothers wedding and wanted to book a few rooms and the staff on the phone was extremely rude and unaccomodating. I am totally appauled that they could deny willing customers. They also made a strict policy only two people per room...stating that my 1.5 year old niece could not stay the room with her parents but would beed a separate room! That is insane and we will be staying elsewhere!!!
Always a great getaway. We've been here maybe 10 times. Never any regrets. We normally come mid week for the price. This stay was a Christmas give from mom and dad.
Love this place. Great place to go when you want to unplug and get away from it all for a weekend. A day or a week.
My husband and I visited this quaint hotel after over 10 years previously. We loved our stay and the friendly staff and great breakfast! We slept in the most comfortable bed ever and will definitely revisit this rare find. If you have never been to Julian...you have to stay here and just get lost in "Old time America"
We stayed two nights, Aug. 8 & 9, and had a marvelous experience. The breakfast is more than ample, and tea time was delightful. The owners were so accommodating with any request we made.
I can't wait to go back again and experience life in the 1890's.
We had a terrible experience. Never staying there again. Too much to go into. You're better off going elsewhere.
Stayed at the B&B for Valentine's Day weekend with my fiancé and had an absolutely wonderful time. Check in was easy and they give you an actual key instead of a key card like most hotels which adds to the feel of a Gold Rush Era town. The room was cozy, quite small, but you have your own bathroom in the first floor rooms where we stayed. They had a two course breakfast between 8:00 am - 9:30 am and an afternoon tea time where they served both tea and coffee in the parlor with board games and the local paper. All the staff was pleasant and happy to help. No TVs but great WiFi if you need it. Overall, a great experience and would go back.
We come here for our anniversary every year. Always a pleasant stay. Staff are welcoming, and we always enjoy playing games in the parlor after the afternoon tea. Breakfast is also delicious.
Had to heal up my knee for a couple days while hiking the PCT. Stayed here for three nights and it was absolutely wonderful. Awesome staff, super cozy, felt like home.
We love this place and plan to return! My husband and I just returned from our stay at the historic Julian Gold Rush Hotel for our anniversary. We stayed in the honeymoon house which was idyllic! The little fireplace kept us warm while we played games on the table in the main room and the canopy bed in the bedroom was very comfortable. We also loved all the windows and the 19th century style furnishings which carried over from the whole Bed & Breakfast. With free Wi-Fi, no television or phones were necessary and would have been an intrusion on the ambiance. Even though this hotel has been a Bed & Breakfast since the 1800's, it weathered an icy and windy storm with no leaks, instant hot water and the room stayed warm from the gas fire stove. The staff was up at dawn clearing the snow and ice and picking up broken branches for the safety of their guests.
The staff took very good care of us and provided a nice tea in the afternoon with an eclectic collection of games that can be played while enjoying a generous array of treats, teas and coffee. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and exceeded our expectations! We were served quiche Lorraine, fresh fruit, homemade cinnamon raisin loaf and granola, yogurt, orange juice and endless tea and coffee. They say there are ghosts at this hotel but our experience was a beautiful sense of being enveloped into warm and elegant hospitality from a chilled and exhausting day in the gold rush era.
It was an amazing and relaxing stay at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel! We went on January 26-27 , 2017 to take opportunity of the snow after the big storm. It's a perfect opportunity to get away from city life and just connect with the town's vibe and the surrounding nature. The hotel has an amazing antique feel to it that makes it seem like you are living back in time. The hotel is full of history and offers a lot of books, games, and delicious food. I highly recommend the spectacular tea they have. I had so many cups of tea because it was that good! They also have secret journal entries in the drawers inside the hotel rooms which I think is a sweet idea! If you go, enjoy every moment of it and make sure to try their breakfast! It is THE BEST. The stay was definitely worth it!
We stayed at the Julian Gold hotel over the holidays last year. From the moment we walked through the doors, it definitely felt like Christmas. The ambience was so inviting and peaceful. The tea time was fun as well! The breakfast, so delicious! We had the polenta. And the granola was something that I couldn't stop eating. Hoping to come back again this winter!
We stayed in late June, but the great time we had was totally worth visiting this page to write about it. The entire experience for us, unlike most hotel stays, was just more than we had expected in every possible way. The hotel is a step back in time and this just begins to give you an idea of the total charm. At the same time I must add that when the need arose, the excellent Wifi service was also very much appreciated. It’s a B&B so don’t miss out on the breakfast or the afternoon tea. This is the part of the hotel that was truly the “icing on the cake”. The breakfast waffles with an apple pie compote topping was just excellent. The staff was very attentive and invited us back for afternoon tea, which is not to be missed. They make everything homemade including the croissants and other super delicious pastries. Tea offerings were varied and of the best qualities also. For the money, you cannot find a better place to go to get away from the city and enjoy a few days away. I thoroughly enjoyed out stay and hope to be back soon.
Great location, cozy bed and breakfast
So cozy and classic. Love this place!
Right in the middle of town - easy to walk everywhere. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Love this place!
My husband and I spent one night at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel last Wed, night, February 22, 2017..wish our stay could have been longer but we will definitely be back! We were there last Dec. as well Fun fun fun.. If you want a place free of TV, radio and WiFi with lots of warm, cozy atmosphere and great food for afternoon tea at 5 :00 and wonderful breakfast .. lots of friendly guest to meet,.. hours by the pot bellied stove.. You can't beat it. Plus, you are in a great old Western town to stroll in with no shortage of places to eat or injoy the famous Julean apple pie! Enjoy!, Sincerely, Jim and Jean Taddonio , San Diego, CA
Room was cozy with character. Location is great to do some shopping and stop off at the room to drop stuff off throughout the day. When we arrived we had afternoon tea and we had a town historian answer questions about the town and hotel's history. Breakfast was included and was so delicous. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
Price, location, quality, and that time travel (with modern necessities) feel can't be beat.
Excellent hill station near by San Diego
One can enjoy greenery and untouched nature. Enjoy Julian gold mine how they struggled and did mining. Felt cold and one should wear warm jackets.
Victorian decor but not gaudy. A place full of history. The hostesses were very pleasant, the afternoon tea was abundant, beautiful and delicious, the breakfast was first rate and served on beautifully set tables. The a/c in our room was very loud and kept restarting every few minutes.
This bed and breakfast is fantastic. The rooms are small (pretty standard for authentic historical B&B) but it's great having a bathroom with shower in every room. The breakfast was excellent (eggs, fresh fruit and house made granola). Much better than standard contenintal breakfast that some offer. There was a welcome tea service as well complete with scones and cookies. Service was exceptionally friendly and accommodating and for staying on Main Street, this place is your best bet.
This hotel is truly a gem! I only stayed for one night, but I wish I could've stayed more. The rooms are lovely, the staff is awesome, and the beds are comfy. I enjoyed checking out the back courtyard and the front porch. SO peaceful. It is a nice place to stay to enjoy the town of Julian. Can't wait to go back!
My husband and I stayed here for a weekend getaway. It was wonderful. Amazing hosts, adorable decor, and right in the middle of everything. There is no dedicated parking lot, but street parking isn't usually hard to find. We loved our stay here
The ambiance, the history, the feel of this place is pure relaxation! Everything from the people, the tea and coffee, to the treats and breakfast is inviting and comfortable. I even love to creaking stairs as you climb them and the soul of the building itself. Will definitely be back again and again!
Beautiful hotel. Patio cottage is amazing, with view. The staff was very nice & attentive. Wish would could have stayed longer. The town is very crowded during the weekend.
This is a nice B&B in Julian if you’re looking to stay away. I was in one of the cottages and it was very nice. It had a small sitting room and fireplace that was actually used since it got down to about 40 degrees. My favorite thing about this place is they serve tea time and a full course breakfast everyday.
My wife and I went here for our honey moon three years ago and have gone back to visit on our anniversary. We absolutely love this little escape! It's got great vibe and terrific service (not to mention their amazing breakfast.) Perfect way to enjoy Julian over the weekend. Highly recommend. :)
If you're looking for that complete Julian experience, then you have to stay here at least one day. The rooms are very clean and have that vintage look. Service is awesome and the breakfast is really good. Overall this place is great and I hope we'll get the chance to stay here again soon!
Staff is great, very friendly. Rooms are quaint. Perfect small town vibe. You leave this place feeling refreshed and relaxed.
I am a lone traveler over 60. I loved the nostalgic atmosphere of the Gold Mine. The rooms were beautifully decorated and very clean. They are small rooms but quaint. They have a charming garden in the back. Breakfast was included in the price and was homemade! It was a nice change from stuffy impersonal hotel chains.
Absolutely wonderful location and service for a great price! We went for our second anniversary and it was amazing. Hostess was super helpful with any questions we had and made us feel right at home. Be sure to try their breakfast granola. It was so good that I bought two bags!
Stayed at the Gold Rush Hotel for two nights while visiting Julian. During check-in you can look at each available room in the hotel to choose your favorite. The breakfast was great both mornings and the staff was very friendly. A great experience.
My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights and had the best time. It was nice to unplug a bit and just read and play games, walk around, sit by the fire, and enjoy the delicious things Julian Gold Rush Hotel offered (breakfast every morning and tea time in the evenings with all kinds of yummy treats). Our room was small but nice and clean and we didn't spend much time in it anyway. Overall, it's a great price and location and I would recommend it.
We have stayed in many of the rooms at the Julian Hotel and have always loved it!! ...the upstairs overlooking Main St., the downstairs with front porch chairs to watch the quiet town's activity, the private, ample Honeymoon Cottage, and the very private Cottage Room in back with it's own porch and relaxing setting...they all have their own charm! And topped with the amazing breakfasts, afternoon teas, sitting room with books, games, charming decor, and friendly welcoming service we have had some of our most enjoyable get-aways here in this charming town and hotel!
Took my wife here for a weekend getaway. It is a great location right in the center of town. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The only downfall is the rooms are super small. If you want to just relax in your room and read you have to do it in the bed because that is the only thing that fits in the room.
When you step into the Julian Gold Rush Hotel, you are literally stepping back into time. The hotel has been fully restored into it original era theme. We checked in at 3 p.m. and the hotel serves tea with cakes and cookies at 5 p.m. which was absolutely a delight. These are homemade cakes and cookies. The staff was absolutely wonderful and accommodating. The hotel is situated right in the center of town so it's easy to walk across the street to the various shops. Unfortunately it was quite cold in Julian so we didn't do a lot of walking. The rooms are small but quaint. There are no TVs in the room and there shouldn't be because there were no TVs during that era. This Bed and Breakfast Hotel was phenomenal. The breakfast is absolutely outstanding. They started with homemade granola with cream, orange juice, coffee. The second course was cheese eggs polenta with hollandaise sauce. Yogurt and fruit. If you really want to escape the everyday life and unwind, this is the place to come to and refresh yourself. This is definitely a not miss experience.
Genuinely a delightful experience. I loved unplugging from the rush of technology and just relaxing. The hotel is very well maintained. The staff is hospitable and friendly. This hotel is a great representation of the feeling you get going to Julian, California - humble, sweet, and comfortable. And yes! The breakfast granola is amazing!
We really like the Gold Rush. Small, quite, neat and clean room. Old Victorian style building with lots of antique furniture. Free WiFi and a nice table served breakfast. 5:00pm tea time too. Excellent staff and in the middle of town. Highly recommend it.
Courteous Staff. Charming Bed and Breakfast format. High Tea at 5 PM was special with fresh baked fare. Room was small but very comfortable. In room Bathroom was great. Breakfast was exceptionally delicious. Walked two blocks to a gourmet restaurant for dinner and was amazed at the wonderful dining.
Our visit exceeded our expectations from reading rave reviews..so we extended our planned 3 day stay!
Beautifully maintained, authentically historic, very warm and cooperative owners and staff. Centrally located.
"Free breakfast" and late afternoon coffee/snacks surprisingly more ample than the occasional pastry and coffee at many hotels.
Charming, comfortable rooms, with period furniture.
We're eager to return. ..but you should come prepared to relaxingly step back to.1800s.
Beautiful, like stepping back in time. The parlor/dining room is a great place to meet other guests from all over. Tea time is such a unique and sweet experience. Staff are all helpful and very pleasant.
My wife and I, along with our two young kids, recently lodged at this wonderful establishment for three nights. The staff was lovely, friendly and helpful. The rooms were cozy, clean and quiet. And the atmosphere was nostalgic and inviting. Added bonus - tasty complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea time. Great place to stay!
Stayed overnight. Bed was comfortable, room a little small. Pleasant decor. Tea @ 5 was pleasant, got to meet other guests. Breakfast was very well done. Streetparking only, which isn't an issue if you time your arrival to avoid crowds.
My husband and I walked in on a Saturday after we realized we wanted to spend the night. They had two rooms available so we took room #9 on the second floor. This hotel has a welcoming vintage style and the employees are attentive. Their breakfast and afternoon tea time consists of 40 year old recipes! The food and style will be a memory we share forever.
Oh,my stars! What a terrific place to stay! The owner cooks a fabulous breakfast. The Victorian decor is perfect in the setting. The beds, heavenly. Very Romantic!!!. A very nice get away for the weekend, especially if Apple Fall fest.
A December visit is wonderfully old-fashioned and very.... Christmassy.
Hope to get my apple pie this next trip!!
This was our second stay at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel. Honestly, it feels like home from the moment you're greeted. The rooms are beautifully decorated to give that gold rush era feel but since my wife is into antiques it's great! The breakfasts are generous and scrumptious! We enjoyed the afternoon tea and sitting on the porch enjoying the cooler temperatures. We went for a drive nearby and saw 15 deer and wild turkeys. This is a great destination and I'm sure we'll keep coming back.
My wife and I enjoyed the hospitality at this historic building. The staff was exceptional and friendly. The breakfast was included and the home made granola was a treat in the sit down dinning room. You also have free wifi but no television. Our neighbor told us ahead of time and we brought some books and a DVD player. It was a pleasure staying there.
Very cozy and sweet bed and breakfast; everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. I highly recommend you check out tea time at 5 PM, there are croissants, cookies, dried fruit, and candied nuts in addition to coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and water selections. They also put out board games for use! There are even jigsaw puzzles and books in the other room for quiet entertainment. The rooms are clean and a little small, but comfortable. They put coffee out at 6:30 AM for everyone, and a free sit down breakfast is offered between 8-9:30 AM. Overall, this is a unique place to stay with a welcoming and cozy winter cabin vibe. Absolutely loved my stay.
Not for us. Excellent version of a bed and breakfast but we just don't like B&Bs apparently. Ultra small rooms. The person sleeping against the wall is trapped by the bed frame and their sleeping partner. Metal beds are loud. Some rooms have bathroom down the halls but en suites have tiny showers. Tea time is fantastic. Breakkie is great just totally not to our taste. Each their own.
Quaint and very well preserved historic hotel right in downtown Julian. We had a comfortable and private cottage in back. The breakfast is stellar and so is 5 o'clock tea. Be aware no tv it's a period correct hotel with electricity and modern plumbing only.
Awesome in every way! Spent the last 30 years going there for special occasions, never disappointed. Just celebrated 48 years of marriage.
Beautiful place. The receptionist was so welcoming and treated us like family. The facilities were old but functional.
This is our third stay in Julian Hotel. We created a family tradition of visiting Julian in a fall, and this hotel is a big part of it. As soon as we step into the lobby, it's like being transported 150 years back. The place is warm, welcoming and so charming. On each of our three stays, we had different rooms on the second floor. All the rooms are comfortable, but small. This is fine because we spend the majority of our stay in the parlor playing board games, or in the lobby area sitting by a fire, or putting puzzles together. Breakfast is served in the parlor each morning and is a great way to refuel before heading out for a hike.
Our room, as the other rooms, are restored to the early 1900's. It was well appointed and very comfortable. The service was very good, friendly and accommodating. For a getaway, this is a great spot with its location right in the heart of the town of Julian. We're definitely coming back soon!
It's a beautiful bed and breakfast. Tea time is a nice way to socialize with other guests. The employees are all wonderful people. I enjoyed my room, but it was a bit small.
What a beautiful hotel to stay! Wonderful staff and comfortable rooms with a view that are perfect. I enjoyed my stay and I paid less as compared to other hotels. Thanks guys for the wonderful experience!!!!
Perfect weekend getaway for people nearby, San Diego, LA. Their breakfast is so fresh, unique and delicate looking. In the last three years, we had four cross the country road trip. Very few bed and breakfast's breakfast quality can compete with this. The price is reasonable. The rooms are neat but not really big. But it's still a steal for this price. I really hope one day they will allow small dogs. So we can come more often.
Both the inside and outside of this hotel is beautifully decorated. The rooms are also clean and are spacious. The customer service here is top notch!
Just returned from a weekend at this wonderful hotel. Couldn't have been better! Loved the afternoon tea- with delicious baked goods, fruit and more... and the outstanding breakfast (you won't need lunch)... and the cozy upstairs room! Lisa and Karen made our stay perfect! They are welcoming and friendly, and do everything to make sure your stay is the best it can be! This is our favorite getaway spot!
Recently went back to this hotel. Requested and stayed in the same room as last time because it has a crawl foot tub!! Plus, its at the end of the hotel on the first floor with not one above you. We love sitting on the porch, watching the world go by.
We weren't able to try the breakfast the first time. So glad we were able to this time! It was fantastic!
Can't wait to go back!
What a nice place. The rooms on the 2nd floor are a little tight but cozy. The breakfast was amazing and the afternoon tea & cookies was a nice touch. We will definitely be back soon.
The staff was so sweet and accommodating. I love the history preserved there in their decor. And they served an amazing breakfast. Four stars only because the room was smaller than we expected (the bed took up most of the room).
Great tea time5-6. Breakfast the best 8-9. Peaceful sleep
My wife and I stayed at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel for 2 nights. Very charming, wonderful room. Hotel is decorated beautifully. Afternoon tea is lovely, breakfasts delicious. Staff and management superb. Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway!!
Cozy and fun. Afternoon tea was a treat. The one thing we really did not like due to the very poor quality was the coffee that was served throughout the day, at afternoon tea and for breakfast! Otherwise we had a lovely stay!
Nice little bed and breakfast with one major flaw.... the breakfast part! Too many customers for the hotel to handle. They only serve breakfast from 8am to 9am and only 5 tables. We came to the dinning room at 830, waited for over 10 minutes with nobody saying anything to us. A table finally opened so we sat down only to be told there was a waiting line! No signs, or anything. Needless to say we left with only half the "bed and breakfast" poorly executed.
Enjoyed a two night stay. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Great hot breakfast and Tea! Walking distance to shows and restaurants. Will be back!
We just spent three nights for our 29th anniversary. The best part about this place is the amazing people that work there. They really take great care of you and are just awesome. Thanks for making our time there special.
My wife said she had a wonderful time here with her sister, and wanted to come back here with me. Julian is a quaint little town and very peaceful with shops all around not to mention the apple pie. To late for the buggy ride, but looking forward to the peace and quiet.
4th of July stay in a gem hotel which serves delectable home cooked breakfast. Their home made granola is one of the best I have eaten. It is also available for purchase. Nice furnishings in the hotel. Staff on duty is warm and friendly. Best of all they remember their regular guests. Afternoon tea is served daily from 5pm - 6pm. There are board games for entertainment.
This is a fine hotel, just rather old fashioned in their amenities. No TV, radio or even a phone in the rooms.
We're older.. retired and wanted a more comfortable experience.
The complimentary breakfast is hardy meal.
When we visit this area this is our go to place to stay. It is a non-smoking hotel and has some rich history.
This is our favorite retreat! We visit this quaint hotel many times through the years. We enjoy the decor of this historical hotel not to mention the food and tea that is provided. We totally relax when we are here and enjoy the sights of this wonderful little town of Julian. If you want to get away for the weekend, this is where you want to go! As a matter of fact, we just came back a couple weeks ago but are planning our next visit again soon. Woohoo!!!
Very quiet place with friendly staff. Clean Nice room it was a little smaller than expected. We enjoyed our stay and will be back.
My boyfriend and I called last minute and they gave us a space right before they were at capacity. Nicole was incredibly friendly and accommodating! We were significantly younger than the average guest, she was nonetheless super happy to help us and give us her knowledge of the area. She found a place for our bikes as we were on tour through the Laguna Mountain area. Breakfast and tea time were included in the price and were very welcome to some hungry bike tourists! Rooms were very comfortable and great shower pressure in the bathrooms.
Nice place to rough it with your loved one. There's no TV, Wifi is a little slow... more cozy alone time. We watched a movie or two on the 12 5 tablet, tea time at 5PM is a must. Breakfast is nice, usually oatmeal, granola, egg something or another, orange juice. It's the atmosphere. Then walk the shops of Julian and have pie. Winter brings snow; sometimes. Catch their deals and Black Friday coupon purchases, often adding free full pie and $25. Added: Went down to breakfast. Wife 2 minutes behind me. Hotel attendant said, "How long will she be?" "About 5 minutes. She's right behind me." I replied. "If more guests come, I'll have to ask you to move [away from the table I'm drinking my coffee at]" she quipped. 2 minutes later my wife joined me. This hotel manager type person who runs the place ruined the atmosphere. We felt rushed (just sat down with only 1 other couple present for 5 tables total). Subtracted two stars for a total of three subtracted.
EXCELLENT Vacation place. Staff pleasant and caring, Efficient and skilled. Catered to our every need
We drove out from Los Angeles to celebrate my partners birthday in Julian. I am so glad we chose this hotel above the others! It has so much charm and authenticity. Every other place looked like a remodeled Motel 6 while the Julian really felt like an old mountain hotel. Super interesting history and friendly staff. Clean rooms, great AC. Walkable to everything in town, even the mine.
We stayed just one night, for a last minute trip (almost booked another but decided against it). I book through expedia, but received no confirmation from the hotel that they received our reservation. I tried calling and there was no answer. I felt hesitant from the beginning, not sure what was going to happen when we arrived. It worked out and we did get a room (poor instructions left on a locked door next to a no vacancy sign, called the number and woke someone up.). I waited outside for about 15 minute while my reservation was checked and someone (who was very nice) came down and gave me a key. They literally had no clue I was coming. The manager was far from welcoming or pleasant. In fact, the way she treated me made me feel as if I was a severe inconvenience or had done something terribly wrong. It was extremely uncomfortably and I will never give my money to this business again. If there were amenities, i wouldn't know. We were never even given the wifi password. It was truly just a terrible experience. My intnentions were to help a small town economy in a little way by spending my money there during this pandemic. I guess this establishment doesn't value that or need it. Julian has a lot of charming places and people. Stay somewhere where you are valued and treated with respect.
My 7 year old son and I have been coming quite often during Pandemic. They have been a wonderful host to us and so easy to work with. Lisa is usually the one who answers the phones and does a bunch of other things. The hotel is historic and RIGHT in the middle of town. It was more affordable than renting a house. We have invited another family to come up as well. We loved it and will be coming back to see the stars in August.
I'm a person with a disability. The first time I went to this hotel, they immediately offered a wheelchair. The rooms are spacious, the aircon and other facilities are functional, and the hotel staff are friendly. I also went to have their buffet, which was exquisite! This was our first time staying at this hotel, but I believe it will not be our last visit. Again, thank you for the wonderful experience!
Still too early to go. Only one restaurant open for dine in. All others either closed or take out only. Hotel nice as always
We have stayed many, many times through the years and always happy when we can stay at the hotel. We have been fortunate to get a very reasonable price,...read this and 226 more
