How would you rate Coops West Texas BBQ?
WOW. The best in the west. I was there on Sunday afternoon, and I have to give this place a 5 star rating which is the best in my book. A must visit BBQ place. The food was OUTSTANDING, the music was good, the atmosphere was laid back the hospitality was great, the ladies behind the counter were very kind. I look forward to our next visit to Coops. Thank you ladies. Thank you COOP!
If you like your BBQ with smoke, Coop's is the place to go!
Ordered the "Knock Out" sampler which inc. 6 meats so we got: pork ribs, beef ribs, brisket, pulled pork, rib tips and hot links. For sides we had the red beans and rice and the mac and cheese. Plus corn bread on the side.
All of the meat was great. The brisket fell apart easily, had a nice smoke ring, but was a bit dry. Perhaps because it was the end of the day. The pulled pork was my favorite, really juicy.
Service was friendly. Sauce is on the side. Smoked meat lovers unite.
Coops is the best!! I have to get the pulled pork when I'm here, such a great flavor all on its own, add the sauce and it's even better. Good selection of sides, my favorites are the red beans and rice and the potato salad. The sides rotate though so your faves may not always be there. Everyone there is always so nice and the owner is usually around and you can tell he takes great pride in what he does.
I have to say someone screwed up tonight at Coops and I believe she was the NEW GIRL HIRED
I was told that she rang a customers credit card up for like $34 and ended up charging $340
Then I sent my spouse there tonight with friends--as we love the girls there and always a good meal
But tonight THE NEW GIRL SCREWED UP
My spouse order a stuffed potato--had nearly no meat at all in the potato
Then she ordered the Special Riblets for me--since she was taking it home asked that it be wrapped in aluminum foil--but it was suppose to come with a couple pieces of corn bread--as it was subbed for the 2 sides--and was suppose to be included with a couple sauce cups
Got it home--NO CORN BREAD--NO SIDES--NO BBQ SAUCE-----you need to train this NEW GIRL correctly or get rid of her--

We will come back but only to sit down not take out--or if we do we will make sure we CHECK the order before we leave
Finally a REAL bar-b-que joint. No disrespect to the rest but this place should be number #1 for bar-b-que in San Diego. Smelled the cook smoking his meat hours before they opened. Proper bar-b-que...
yams, collard greens and corn bread were great. the meat was ok, sauce was good though which made up for it. I tried the meat without the sauce on purpose did not taste the smokiness but it was definitely tender so that is good. peach cobbler is yummy. service is AMAZING very friendly and polite and that is important to me. I would go back again if I want some bbq. 👍👍
This Texas expat remains grateful for the consistent superb REAL BBQ at Coops. This is up there with the best that Austin/Houston has to offer-- I know. How anyone could pass on this quality for mock-BBQ here in SD is beyond me. And the collard greens and red beans and rice just put icing on the cake. Finally, the staff are unremittingly pleasant and patient, regardless of the line and the newbies. Thanks, Coop!
We found Coop's while visiting from San Antonio, Texas. We know good BBQ, and wanted to try something different than Phils on this trip. Coop's is hands down the best BBQ in San Diego, and would make the top 3 list in Texas. Everything was amazing including the cornbread, which was to die for. Cassandra handled our large to-go order and was one the most accommodating proprietors we have ever met.
wanted to love it but food was just not good had rib tips baked beans n mac the corn bread was ok the rib tibs just were no flavor n kinda though the baked beans seamed as if they added crushed pineaple the only thing that was good was sweet potatoe pie slice i dont know just was not really worth my 16 dollars bad taste left in my mouth
The best BBQ I have ever had outside of Texas! It blows Phil's bbq away. The meat is so tasty, you don't need to add sauce like you do at Phil's. I usually get a full rack of pork ribs with two large sides. The sides are all very tasty. All of their meats are very lean and tender. They even smoke turkeys for Thanksgiving!
The brisket was tender and melt in your mouth good. The hot link sausages I like them. This place does get packed with people so it might be best to get your food to go. The baked beans were sweet and tasty. Cole slaw was straight out of Texas. Really though GET THE BRISKET!
Best hot links in San Diego. The brisket is great as well. I can't believe that this is not considered the best bbq place in San Diego. Phil's bbq is not this good.
Perfection. Rib meat so tender it melts in your mouth. Collard greens like grandma used to make. The best BBQ place we have ever been. Ever.
I see a hugh percentage of highly positive reviews and i applaud that. amazing service offered. at a busy time of the day,I received such grace and patience in interpreting my desires and patiently explaining what would be a match. supreme service with special attention to Cassandra. after the grand attention when ordering, from there i had no expectations of disappointment with the food.and sure enough, the brisket plate was a delight, plenty of tender beef cooked to perfection. the collards were not over powering-the tastiest I've eaten. the beans and rice were not too salty, with what seemed like more beans than rice. come and treat yourself to the warm, generous service and to food beyond your desires.
I've lived up the street for almost two years now. Definitely one of the best places I've been to in San Diego. Some days I wake up and literally smell the glory from my house and just have to get it. The foods awesome, the staff is friendly and Coop normally says hi whenever he's around and he seems super cool. My favorites are the pulled pork or jerk chicken sandwiches with the Mac n cheese or baked beans. Also try his new chicken place in the same parking lot, awesome!
AWESOME bbq. I'm not a connesuire, but I think this is some of the best BBQ I've had so far. It gets busy so I don't recommend eating there. I'd expect there to be a line when you get there.
I got the pork rib tip plate...enough meat for two! Could not eat it all. Also ordered a slice of sweet potato pie. The sides (collard greens and potato salad ) were amazing! !
Was visiting from NY....Wow the food is simply off the chain. The ribs and brisket are soo good I mever tried anything else. The butt ermilk pie is great. Not a fancy place, just a straight up BBQ joint, the kind that if you linger your clothes smell like charcoal. Great..Trust Me...Great
Awesome BBQ, friendly people. I put down a full lb of the brisket and loved it! It's a road trip for us - but well worth it. Fully recommend.
Ordered online in advance. No wait. FOOD IS AWESOME! Mac n cheese makes you wanna slap your mama. The pork ribs are smoky, tender and tasty with or without the sauce, which is perfection. Corn bread is big and tasty. I love dipping it in the sauce. I just made myself hungry all over again...
Besides the food, the second best thing about this place is that the food is consistently very good to great, more so great. Never had an o.k. day. Staff are always fast and friendly. People who don't like this place just don't know that they don't like Texas BBQ.
Best ribs in San Diego, I love taking visitors from out of town telling them that they are in for a treat. I love when they discover the world class ribs that are available in SoCal!!!
The Brisket just melts in your mouth. Perfectly smoked, and a little on the salty side, but very good. We also tried the rib tips, which were pretty good. Love love love the hot links! The beans are made with pineapple, ehich sounds wierd but are delicious, and are the small beans, and very tender. The cornbread is good as are the red beans and rice (spicy). Overall a good meal, and will definitely be back to try some of the other meats. One of the best parts was during the meal, the (I think owner?) came out into the "dining room" to stop and ask each table if they were enjoying their meal. OUTSTANDING!! I recommend this BBQ.
While the sauce is pretty good, what makes Coops one of my favorites is the meat. It is cooked perfectly, to the point where one doesn't even need the sauce to make it good. Definitely recommend getting the sweet tea, you won't regret it!
Best ever. He use to to cater my daughters parties and Christmas and now that he open up shop. The FOOD is STILL AMAZING.
This is place is just OK. Potato salad was salty, the cornbread was dry and if you like watery bbq sauce then this is for you. The meat was at least good and the mac n cheese.
Love the food and the service. Depending on what type of food you want determines what location you go to. They are right across from each other. Also, it is easy to miss.
I've finally found a good BBQ spot! All I can say is Coops did not disappoint! The BEST BBQ so far, in Southern California. I have been on the hunt for some good Southern style BBQ since moving here 5 months ago. And a friendly atmosphere. They were even walking around giving us samples of their honey BBQ chicken drumlets, sooooo good! The ribs and Texas sausage were on point, so juicy and delicious, and I'd like to echo a previous review, no need to drown your meat with BBQ sauce,. Good BBQ doesn't need any. The collard greens were so good too! I will definitely be coming back. I would go today if it wasn't closed due to the holiday. I, myself am from Texas, and I can really appreciate this place. Way to represent! Can't wait to taste the Mac 'n Cheese, brisket and peach cobbler. I can't reiterate how friendly the staff was. Made me feel like home. We Texans are very hospitable and friendly folks, and so great to see living in California hasn't changed them here. Thanks
This place is so relaxed (atmosphere). The food is amazing, and you know it's going to be good as soon as you step in the door.
This is the first time I've felt compelled to leave a review. I got the beef BBQ rib plate with baked beans and macaroni and cheese. It was quite literally the best BBQ I've ever had. The depth of flavors in everything was delicious: smokiness and seasonings of the ribs, real cheese in the macaroni and cheese, very flavorful baked beans, even the BBQ sauce on the side was complex and tasty, also the sweet tea was on point. This is a place worth repeated patronage. Also, the customer service was phenomenal. 10/10 would recommend!
Friendly and polite would come back here again and again. Cool atmosphere and cool old school music. Nice portion size. Family oriented and clean place to eat at. Even though the line is almost out the door I would highly recommended.
As a southerner recently relocated to San Diego, coops is probably the best bbq the county has to offer. Nice size ribs. Brisket consistency and taste is 9/10. BBQ sauce is a great compliment. The chicken is a shocker in how good it tastes. All in all, this is one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego.
Our family has never had a bad experience at Coops! The friendly service is wonderful but more importantly, all food here is the best! If you are looking for the best smoked barbeque BBQ then Coop's is the place!! We are all from South Mississippi and it took us a few years to find some down-home food that we love. They also serve Collard greens! MmmmmMmmm we are here now!!
Absolutely love Coops. It's been great everytime I've come here, friendly customer service and a cozy setting. Hot links are on point, have recommended it to family and everyone loves it.
Their "regular" BBQ sauce is the best I've ever had (their spicy and tangy ones are pretty good, too). Good pulled pork, pork spare ribs, and some really good beef brisket. Go here.
Coops is a pretty basic Restaurant. You order at the counter and then take the food to eat at the few tables. No alcohol is served. Their BBQ is probably the best in San Diego. Well with getting off your way to come here and eat. Best in town easily.
amazing bbq! rib tip Tuesday is great! brisket awesome! ribs awesome! their sides are great I've tried em all I usually go with baked beans and collard greens. cornbread is great too!
As I walked through the door, a blast of Texas hit me. I was staggered for a moment but I had to push on. The ultimate test was in the taste and everything was ridin' on it. My order came quicker'n a jack rabbit on crack and the moment of truth came with it. I took the first bite and instantly knew....a little piece of heaven had truly come to San Diego. God bless Coop and God bless Texas!
Hands down the best BBQ out side of Texas. I love going here. Give them a try and you won't regret it. My favorite sides are the baked beans and Mac and cheese.
I'm not a meat person..but that's where my husband wanted to go on his birthday. The food was amazing & the staff very friendly. Will definitely be going again...even licked my fingers...something I never do 😮
Love coming here. The good is always outstanding service is always great. A huge plus is that the owner always comes by and asks how everything is going or even just to say hi. I can truly respect that and love it.
The hot links! So hot and so darn good. Jerk chicken, pork ribs, brisket, rib tips, all good. Red beans and rice, collared greens, potato salad all good. Best bbq in San Diego County!
I haven't had better bbq since I've been in southern California! And it was amazing to have some sweet tea! Great food and great people at Coops! God Bless Texas!
Sliced brisket was great! Red beans and rice was different from what I am used to buy a great flavor. Collard greens were perfect! Just tender enough without becoming a paste and not overly bitter. Just a great complement to the brisket, rice and beans. Sweet tea is some of the best I've found since living in San Diego (been here for about 7 years now). The smell when you walk in is outstanding! I was stuffed and still hungry from the smell alone! The counter service was good too. Overall great experience.
Really great bbq. I like it without the sauce. Very tasty. Mac and cheese, the baked beans and the red beans and rice are top sides. Big fan of the beef bones. Prices are a little high. They offer daily specials. Tuesdays pork tips , etc.
Best BBQ in San Diego. Family run and great food.
I have been enjoying this BBQ a lot and bragging about it. I had a friend recommend a California BBQ joint nearby. I wanted to compare so I spent money to test the competition. I was disappointed with what people were comparing Coop's to. I won't stray away again this is my BBQ hookup.
Another little gem. Spare ribs were big, tender and tasty. Brisket was tender and flavorful. Sides were adequate, greens were a little sour. The peach cobbler was outstanding! We left very satisfied!
We ordered to go for a homey meal, being from SC where BBQ is everywhere. We were impressed with the sides the most--the macaroni and potato salad! We also love a BBQ place that comes with the original white bread:) BBQ was good, just a little salty and sauce was mild. Overall, I think we would order again!
I have heard great things about Coop's and I went and tried it with my wife. It's a small place with no frills and you order at the counter. The food was great. I had the brisket plate and my wife had the ribs. The brisket was good but the ribs were better. Good BBQ sauce and the sides were tasty. It's a little on the pricey side but good BBQ is hard to come by in San Diego so it's a nice spot.
There is no such thing as a bad meal from coops. The meats are beyond tender and have the most incredible flavor. Bbq sauce is added at the table (but is certainly not needed). When I'm craving southern food this is where I go. They have greens, red beans and rice, and cornbread that even my grandmother (who is born and raised southern) loves. The owner is super nice and will come around to chat on occasion. Everyone who works here is helpful and friendly. Whenever I meet someone visiting San Diego or a new transplant, this is the place I tell them to try.
Great food at great prices. I had the jerk chicken with red beans and rice and the collard greens...YUMMY! Hubby chose the pulled pork...very moist and tender! We were visiting the area, but would definitely be a place I would return to if I lived in San Diego!
This food is delicious, and you can see the smoker outside while you're eating! Highly recommend a sampler plate and you have to get cornbread. The three different BBQ sauces are great, my favorite is the original but the hot is excellent too. Did I mention the Mac and cheese is bomb? I'd make the trip just for that, but it's even better alongside some pulled pork.
Chef came out while we were eating and made the rounds and the girl at the counter was friendly and helpful! If I could give higher than 5 stars I would :)
I thought the food was pretty good. I think I was told it was amazing, so I was expecting better. However, the food was good. My favorite thing on the menu was the candied yams. The only sell these in Sundays. Oh, so good! We tried a lot of the meats and I thought the pulled pork was the best. Really good BBQ sauce too!
The food is good...but the Customer Service is exceptional!
I had a small collard green and anyone that know me know I love greens and if they are really good I drink the juice...whelp I drank the juice or "liquor" for those who know what I'm talking bout.....
Yum yum yummiest yummy!
Best. BBQ. in. San Diego. No one else compares to coops. I've tried Cali comfort and coops (based out of Texas) blows them away. Their dining space is a little cramped but the food is all smoked and amazing. Only item I would say isn't great are the beef ribs. However, the pork ribs, jerk chicken, spicy sausage links and everything else is amazing. Family deal is a great price as well vs other bbq places.
Visited Coop's today and was pleasantly impressed with the food. It is truly difficult to find BBQ done correctly in Southern California, but Coop's does it right! I visited with a family from Texas, and myself being from Florida, we were hoping to be impressed. We met Mr. Cooper, who was very friendly. He brought us a sample of Sausage Boudin, and even set up a heat lamp (we sat outside) when he overheard the kids say they were cold. I will definitely be visiting again!
Possibly the best ribs ever. It's just a little place, but boy do they put out good stuff. Had excellent collard greens with potato salad. It's a bit hard to get to but well worth the effort.
This is the real deal BBQ. When you pull up you smell the smoke. This is legit WT BBQ. There are two buildings. The building on the north side of the lot is you traditional smoked meats and has seating inside. The location on the south side is fried chicken and waffles with seating outside. The food here is amazing. The service is friendly. Don’t look any further, this is the place to stop. The smoke is perfect on the meats and if you want sauce they have 2 flavors that are really good but you don’t need it. Wow!
Oh. My. God. FINALLY! BBQ that actually tastes good before its drowned in spices. And greens that taste good and peach cobbler to die for. Utterly THE best I've ever had. They could have charged double. If the BBQ side is full, they are fine with you taking your tray over to the fish and waffle side, even for drink refills and tray return. Very highest reccomendation. And the buttermilk pie...
This will be my first time trying this place, there were a lot of people there I hope the food is as good as it looks. Give me a little bit of time to start eating and I'll let you know. 😁😁 the food was pretty good I didn't really too much care for the macaroni and cheese and I did not like the sweet potato pie it was kind of loose and I like a more stiff pie. Also once you got home you had to add the sauce to the meat they gave it to you separate in a little container. Which I didn't like when you get barbecue ribs that should already be barbecue for you.
I ordered the amazing Homemade Texas Sausage Plate w/awesome Collard Greens and out of this world Mac n Cheese. I'm taking home their to die for peach cobbler. Highly recommend Coops. It's a bit out of the way if you don't live in Lemon Grove but absolutely worth the trip for some fantastic Texas Barbq!
Don't be put off by the prices, you are paying for quality BBQ, and it is worth it.
This is one of the few places I can honestly say that everything on the menu is good if not amazing.
The meat here is so flavorful and tender that no sauce is needed. Try the spicy BBQ sauce for a nice kick.
Great customer service. Very friendly and welcoming staff. First time actually ordering after driving by and seeing the line that wraps around the restaurant a couple of times. Ordered the brisket, rib tips, and the pulled pork and all were absolutely delicious and savory. This place is probably the best bbq joint in all of San Diego. For people who don't understand the smoking process, the price is reasonable for the portions given.
This one of the best in town when it comes to bbq! The meats are smoked and cooked to perfection and are juicy. I personally don't like the bbq sauce they give with your meals. I can't tell what the base for the sauce is but it's not for me. I've ordered from here several times and my orders have been correct. However I tried ordering online and when I picked up my food and got it home, what I ordered was not in the box. I would like next time if the person helping the customer would check the food and receipt before handing over the food. I recommend this place. It is small inside.
The food is good and they get sold out fast. It's definitely not a place where you sit for a long meal but it's a place for a good meal. The service is adequate. Parking is easy too. They have a waffle and fried chicken next door as well. However, they have outdoor seating only.
If you are looking for good food, you have found the right place. Everything we got here was delicious. The mac and cheese. Amazing. Ordered the kit and kaboodle and it did not disappoint. Was a sample of every meat, there was nothing left from our order. Best southern style cooking I have found in San Diego. I 100% reccomend this place to everyone. Finger licking good.
Come early and get family dinner takeout. All the meats are good and smokey. Chicken is tender and the hotlink's are great. Collard greens are flavorful.
Second time back and it was just as tasty as the first! The cole slaw, baked beans, sweet potatoes (Sunday only) and the cornbread were all delicious. The beef ribs (half rack) were enough for two people. The chicken and fried okra is from their sister restaurant next door. Great BBQ sauce reminded me of San Antonio BBQ joints. Leave yourself some time because good food takes time, but it is well worth the wait.
If I could give them 6 stars, I would. The second best BBQ brisket I've ever had...the 1st was a place in Texas. A good 1/4"-1/2" smoke ring on the brisket, no BBQ sauce required. It was moist and melt in your mouth delicious. The place was packed but SO worth the wait. Would go back again and again to get my BBQ fix. Staff was friendly and efficient despite how busy they were. If you want good BBQ...this is the place.
Fantastic Food! If you want better BBQ, you have to go to Texas. Best Spot in SD!
On a Sunday, it can get a little busy as people like to eat. They have another spot for chicken right next door. The Sauce is pretty good. Quality stuff, I’m glad I had found this place.
Oh my gosh. You have not tried good barbecue if you have not been to coops. Everything is homemade and I guarantee you that you will taste the best macaroni and cheese ever. The staff is super nice. Call ahead because there is always a line and for good reason. Across I Da Coop which sells fried chicken and fish. The portions are huge. Their fries are the best I have ever tasted
The food is amazing! I used to live in Texas and this food is delicious actually its even better than some of the BBQ in Texas! The staff is very friendly! I recommend the brisket, it was juicy and succulent! I will definitely return
Food was bomb! I got the knock out combo for my family of four and it was a ton of food for not a lot of money. We definitely had some to take home and eat. Sweet tea and great atmosphere! We will be back for sure.
Simple, authentic, delicious barbecue.
Also: Friendly staff, reasonable prices, generous portions.
There's often a line, sometimes no table open, but it's fast, and they also have the chicken place next door, so you may be able to go over there to sit down.
It is OK if you like this style - a little greasy for me. Meat does not fall off bone like I prefer. However that is just me.
Excellent ... Excellent ... Excellent ribs. Fall off the bone tender and delicious. Great side offerings also.
I lived in Texas years ago (both Dallas and Houston); I never found ribs this good!
The dine in experience is very basic, the food is delicious.
Today my job had a Black History event for our clients and community members. Coop’s catered. That food was so good. Everyone loved it. The greens were on point. I truly appreciate all of your hard work feeding the masses. Thank you
There is no better place.
This place never lets you down. The food is always superb.
By far thee best barbecue you will ever have. I drive 60 miles to enjoy this greatness. I just wish I lived closer. The peach cobbler is to die for. You always know a good barbecue place when there sides are just as amazing as the food. This place never lets me down. I promise it won’t let you down. This is the only barbecue in San Diego COUNTY YOU SHOULD EAT.
If I'm not getting up at 3am to do work on my smokers this is the ONLY place that I find is a suitable substitute! The only BBQ spot I can endorse in San Diego as it is one of the few that doesn't hide their meats under gallons of sauce. Done right everytime, and the service is excellent too. Winner!
Hidden gem! Rare to find such good barbecue in Southern California! Might be a long waiting line...there is a reason for that and that is because the food is that good!
Best BBQ in my opinion and I've eaten a lot of BBQ. They also have won local awards for their food. The pulled pork is awesome and the rib tips are so flavorful. My buddy is a big fan of the Brisket. And don't forget the corn bread.
Very friendly place with very good food. One of my favorite places to eat.
Best brisket in San Diego. Period. Worth the drive from anywhere. Plenty of free parking, quick service, friendly staff, and you won't leave hungry. The red beans and rice are something special.
Man the Beef Brisket is absolutely killer!
I have been searching for real Texas Brisket and damn I found it. But the best part of it is they are super...read this and 1710 more
