How would you rate Cultivate Salon?
NO LONGER THERE
I went here when it was the Nappy Kitchen, same owner with the same nasty attitude!!! They style hair great but very unprofessional & overly priced!!! The stylist Anjanette had me sit in her seat to cut my ends & right before she started here appointment walked in & she said come back in 2 hours???? How long would it have taken to cut ends??? They say no appointment is needed but from my experience its preferred evidently!!! But that's what I should expect with dealing with my own black people!!!
This is the first place I tried in STL and I don't see myself seeing anyone else. Great crew!
Update on 1/23/17: Lana is still my beloved mentor in what has been and continues to be a trying hair journey. 10/10 do recommend.
Wow!!! I just looked at the prices and they are expensive. 65+ just to get my hair washed and flat ironed.geesh
Great atmosphere, knowledgeable stylist and good quality work
I picked this place because they specialize in dealing with natural hair. Yes, their prices are a little high, but id rather pay a little more and be confident that I'm gonna get what I want than pay cheaper prices and leave crying because my hair is irreversibly damaged. I got highlights about 3 months ago, and people are STILL complimenting me on my hair. I plan to get a bob razor cut and more highlights later this week, and went in to show Lana a few pics of what I want to be sure they could do it. She had someone in her chair, and still took a few mins to look at what I bought. Very knowledgeable, and as long as I'm in STL, won't trust anyone else to put their hands in my head.
Today was my first time getting my hair styled here (or anywhere in quite a while) and I loved every minute of it! Lana was so nice and welcoming when I came in and throughout my visit. My stylist, Janae', was absolutely incredible. Sooo sweet and easygoing, very knowledgeable about hair and making sure that I knew what she was doing the whole time. She SLAYED my hair and I couldn't be any happier. The atmosphere was awesome, no vulgar, loud music or talk, no disgruntled stylists talking about how much they hate their job, it was clean and the staff was very professional. This salon is a jewel and I would recommend it very highly!
Knowledgeable abt hair care and the shampoo....was the best part
Website filled with pictures of styles that they cannot do. The owner has extremely poor business practices with no tact. Appointments last all day long.
Find some place else to get your hair done.
I would leave a zero if I could. I went in for a cut and style, I wanted my hair to be even. I expected the stylist to know how to deal with my hair since it's a natural hair shop. But instead I left with my hair even more uneven than how I came in, and I didn't realize it was uneven because she used the style to hide it. Ans the style she put in looked like something I could have done myself but worse. On top of that it was highly overpriced. I would not recommend this place at all.
It's the best salon in st louis
This shop is absolutely amazing. Lana is a very nice lady and very knowledgeable in the cosmetology field. She made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. This salon has gained a new customer. I just want to say if you need a salon here in St.Louis and your a natural hair person female or male. This is the shop for you. So very glad I found this place.
Very over priced for the quality of stylist work. I asked for a silk press and walked out looking like I just had a blowout.
Very professional & knowledgeable! I have never been dissapointed with my hair.
I absolutely love the atmosphere and my naturalist Anjanette. Though I been living out of town for a few years I always find myself back to cultivate. Many friends ask who does my hair, so hopefully they are as satisfied as I am.
I was in town for business and was able to get an appointment to retwist my locs. Online appointment scheduling is a great feature and the ladies at the salon easily make you feel like you are among old friends. If ever in STL again, I'm going to make a visit to Cultivate. And, of course, my locs look great!
I love my stylist! Janea is amazing at what she does and the other ladies are always friendly
Absolutely love this place! Never had anything less than top notch service! Friendly and knowledgeable staff here! Would highly recommend going here because they never disappoint!
I've been coming to Cultivate Salon getting the Dev Cut and Shampoo for years, Lana is a great educator about Deva Curl! MS. DH was advise she was not a Deva curl candidate! !!!! Lana explain to Ms.DH and showed her the type of curl pattern which was 4C z pattern. Ms. DH was very rude and refused to except any of the professional advice she was given. I was not the only Deva Curl client at the time the other ladies felt Ms. DH was rude and not excepting the professional advise and understanding what her hair type was!! Sorry MS DH sometime us natural girl can't except the truth.
Pleasant atmosphere but I won't be returning for the following reasons:
I went in expecting a deva cut, shampoo, and deep condition as advertised and booked.
1. She combs my hair while it's dry- a no no for curly hair as far as I know. Anywhere else I've been does not do that. She gave a reason but still ends up coming from the middle, not the bottom.
2. When I went to the shampoo station she (Lana) tells me she won't be using the Deva Curl products.
3. Doesn't do a deva cut- because she combed out my curl pattern
I left looking worse then when I came in, went home, shampooed my hair and can clearly see a tight cut well defined curl pattern.
Me and my girls always feel special and well taken care of at Cultivate Hair Salon and I always receive so many compliments!!!
I Got my hair twisted here a month ago for $40. I was satisfied with the twists. so I come back a month later for the re-twist. she didn't even try to make it look like she was trying. New growth still there, hair ain't looked no different from when I came in, then told me the price was a cool $55. won't see me no more Lonna
Anjanette does a great job. She did my hair for my wedding and she's been helping me maintain my local since I decided to lock my hair.
Decided to grow my hair back out. Anjanette does an excellent job with my braids. She's the only person my daughter and I go to.
Got my hair done here 2 day by Anjanette . I was very happy with my hair.
Came in to get permanent loc extensions and they looked fake she left hair out, rushed through it, washed my hair and didn’t moisturize my scalp or anything. When I asked her why she didn’t she said it was no need. Well needless to say a few weeks later they began I come out while I was at work I didn’t have them up or anything they just fell out. I will never be back at the salon due to the poor service that was given.
Anjanette installed a beautiful curly weave on me. She did a great job and was very efficient. Will definitely go back to her in the future.
We specialize in natural hair care with love!
They do a fantastic job with natural hair.
I am new to STL and I was referred to Cultivate Salon for their expertise with natural hair. So first, I set up a free consultation with Danielle where I told her about the style I wanted, showed her pictures, set up appointment, etc. During my actual appointment, Danielle was so so nice and listened to all my concerns, answered questions, talked me through the style I was getting, etc. I was getting a brand new style that involved a lot of cutting and color so I was very nervous but, in the end, it came out perfect! Such a great experience and atmosphere. I will definitely be returning!
WARNING: This is, by far, the worst hair salon experience I've had in my entire life. How can someone who owns a hair salon & a practicing stylist, perform at such a deficient level?!
My experience with Lana Coleman!
I researched online for an African American hair salon that specialized in doing natural hair. I saw the reviews and saw that Lana was featured on a special video featuring black business owners. I assumed that I was in for a treat. I booked for a shampoo, deep conditioning, and oil treatment with Lana Coleman. The simplest of services, I thought! My hair was out in a fro. She started by using a wide-tooth comb, but was extremely rough with my hair. She was combing from the middle base to the tip. A BIG NO NO for 4c hair types. After that, I went to the sink to start my wash. She rubbed the front and both sides of my head two times before rinsing. I questioned if she was in a rush or something. She never touched the back of my hair or any other parts. She applied a coat of conditioner (I thought it was the 2nd round of shampoo, but no), put a plastic cap on my head, and had me sit for about 10 minutes. I took this time to rub the areas that she didn't even touch. I guess she applied oil after that and placed the plastic cap back on my head and had me sit under the dryer for ~30 minutes. She rinsed my hair, did the same comb through like before and then asked me if I wanted to sit under the dryer. That was the end of the service! I was confused. I asked her if she was going to dry my hair with the blow dryer. Apparently, it would be an extra $15. After having already a poor service, I couldn't convince myself that any additional services would be worth it. I, literally, could not believe what I was experiencing. Needless to say, I braided my wet roots and EXTREMELY dry ends (after being under the dryer for 2 minutes), put my wig back on, and headed out the door. I took a loss, but definitely learned my lesson! I'm sure I will look back at this horrible experience and laugh about it, but I'm in disbelief right now. I still can't believe this happened smh. I feel deceived and scammed.
Lana Coleman's services were absolutely NOT that of a qualified professional. At my visit, I found her careless attitude, deceptive marketing, and poor service extremely disappointing.
I waited 48 minutes past my appointment time. Just as I was getting up to leave I was called to the chair.
