How would you rate Roger Brown's Restaurant and Sports Bar?
Food was warm like it had been sitting awhile not fresh, very oily, and not what I expected for the price point. I will say I went for lunch with a group so perhaps dinner service is better.
Food looks good and tastes great. Arrived for lunch with 2 children. We had fun and no one minded the noise!. TVs were a bonus.
Not sure why there are so many 5 stars for this place, but my experience was terrible (bad food, bad service, bad management). A friend and I went for the Mayweather v Pacquio fight but we got there super early before they were even busy so there was no reason why our service was so bad. We waited 20 min with no service before I had to go track down a manager to get us a waitress. She took our orders for an appetizer, 2 alcoholic drinks, and 2 entrees. After taking our order, the waitress disappeared. Someone else brought out our drinks/food. Our waitress didn’t bother to check if we needed anything and didn’t come back to our table until we completely finished our meal. We were there for 4 hours and our water was never refilled once. Other than our bad waitress, the drinks were watery, crab dip was soupy, and the entrees were not anything special. After getting our bill, we realized they added 18% gratuity when it was only 2 of us. We asked to speak with a manager to correct it and he told us to hold on and hid in the kitchen (I guess hoping we would leave) and never came back to help us. We finally found another manager and got the bill corrected but only after waiting for 30 minutes. Management seems horrible and it really sets the tone for the entire restaurant. Don’t go there with high expectations or you will be disappointed.
This restaurant is the epitome of hit or miss. While dining in I've never had any complaints with the food; however, the service has always been lacking, one time waiting over 45 minutes just to receive the check because our waitress disappeared. With their take out, I find it just the opposite. The food is occasionally good, more often than not I regret my decision, but the bar staff is on point. The only reason I'm giving two stars is for the bar staff; otherwise, I would look for a less than one star. I called in a take out order for a Crispy California Salad. I had to wait on hold for a bit, but that's ok, I realized they were busy and the gentleman on the phone was very polite. When I got there, the man who took my order (I don't remember his name, but he has nice dreads) recognized my name and remembered my order, he got it right to me and with a little bit of joking conversation I was out the door in a few minutes. Once I got back to work I realized that they left out the dressing, so I ran back, he remembered what dressing I had asked for and ran to the back to get it. When I finally got back to my salad, I found it to be seriously lacking, it was very soggy and a good portion of the lettuce was brown, and when I cut into the chicken, which I had grilled, I found it to be raw. I called and spoke with a very polite woman who expressed her dismay and apologized profusely and refunded my money. Unfortunately, after eating some of the chicken, I'm now sick. I have to say that Rodger Brown's has lost my business, but I appreciate the professionalism of the staff that I interacted with today.
First time here it's ok but the wait staff is above average ...try the cranberry mule that's if you like ginger beer.
The service tonight was utterly disgusting. We put out appetizers in at the same time as our dinner but never got out dinner. The waitress had the nerve to ask us I'd we wanted dessert....really?? Then we complained to multiple people and nothing got done. The waitress had the nerve to retake our order. I was done! We decided to walk out, but got chased down High Street. Lol. My brother in law went back in to pay $51 for our appetizers and stuff. Which I felt he should not have paid. Anyway. We then spoke to general manager who did not give a damn about how sucky our service was from the time we spent waiting on our table until the time we walked out. Needless to say, we will NEVER go back in there again. NEVER EVER They don't even deserve 1 star!
Great place for the locals... Mr. Brown is usually around and very welcoming to his guests. The chips are amazing!
Was there for lunch; new to Portsmouth. Lunch was great, as was the service. Can't wait for warmer weather to sit outside.
I had a great experience at this restaurant. Every time I go I don't get disappointed. I ordered jumbo lump crab cakes. They were almost as good as MD crab cakes. My waiter Daniel Copland was one of the best we've had :)
I attended a function here today. The service from Nick and Candice was excellent and the food was great I recommend ROGER BROWN for all events. You will be in good hands and they are affordable.
Daniel Copeland was the best waiter I have had and the food was great the smothered pork were mouth watering. And me wife got the crab cakes the were very good by far the best in the norfolk area. MUST GO
Wonderful experience with the banquet with Candace and Nick. They were a wonderful addition to my dad's surprise dinner. Their bright smiles and amazing work made the lunch quite a success. We will be returning to Roger Browns. 👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾
We were waited on by Mr Daniel Copeland he was very attentive and hospitable. The crab dip was outstanding and I love the mini cornbread muffins 👍. Yum!
Our family arrived at the restaurant at 9:00pm on June 7, 2016 and by 11:15pm we all still did not have our food. We went as a graduation dinner for my nephew and we made reservations for the time. The waitress was great but was pulled off the floor for other duties mid completing our orders. Each person received their food at different times. Personally, I waited over an hour and then my order was wrong. 30 minutes later, my order arrived and it was disappointing. The crab cake was dry and hard fried. It looked burnt and had no taste at all. And my other seafood portions were cut in less than half.
Others in my family did not receive their food until the waitress came over and the manager was sent to the table so we could file a complaint.
Others came in after us with just as many people in their parties and were served and left well before us.
To add insult to injury, the manager even admitted that my food looked terrible and dry. He gave a 20% discount for my bill.
There were 13 people in our party. I am not a superstitious person but 13 was unlucky for us going into this establishment.
I gave it one star because of the waitress. She was very friendly and I know it was not her fault. She was the one good to all the bad.
We were handled in a very unprofessional manner. No more visits to this restaurant for me.
Sunday through Thursday it's a great family friendly environment. Friday and Saturday night they usually have a Dj and it's not the best place to take your kids. Food is great, I highly recommend the ribs or flank steak. It's a great place to go if you want to watch a game because they have four massive TVs. Only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is because if they're really busy the kitchen will fall apart and food will take a while to get there (so never blame the server when that happens!). And as I said Friday Saturday nights it turns into a ghetto club area :/
OLde Towne's premier sports bar! Great food and selection of beers. Big screen TV's for viewing your favorite sports game. The best outdoor dining in Olde Towne too!
I love this place. The service is great and they bring the drinks ASAP. The food is delicious and the staff are pleasant.
The food is decent but not as good as it use to be. They have good drink selection but are a little on the expensive side. The restaurant is the largest around so you never have to wait for a table. Even when they're super busy on the weekends you can find a place to sit. They alway show all the PPV UFC events which is a nice thing. Most places that have the UFC events are to crowded, but that is never a problem with Roger Brown's due too its size.
Great food and nice environment! I enjoyed watching the presidential debate here with fellow Democrats. #hillary2016 #clintonkaine
Slow slow slow service. Food not that tasty. Drinks out slow. Food out to wrong table, top it all off with food sickness later that night. Not to be gross but the turkey burger made me very sick. After seeing the incompetence of the serving staff it makes me wonder if the cooks aren't as bad with the way they handle/store the food. The place could probably use an inspection soon! Disappointed because we were there from out of state to celebrate a very special event for our family member. Sad because he paid for the crap. Will never go back!
Worse service I think I've ever had. Seated at our table at 5:30 and at 7:00 half of our party of 8 hadn't gotten our food yet. Second round of drinks took 40 minutes and for those that did get their food, got their appetizers about 5 minutes after we received our main course. We spoke to the manager or head waitress or whoever she was who gave a half hearted apology but the waitress never said a thing acting like it was no big deal. No discount or anything and to top it off those of us that paid cash and were due change, only got paper money back as the waitress evidently tipped herself the coin change. Been there a few times but that was the last and I know the owner could care less.........too bad I had to give it one star, there should be an option for zero stars.......
I've been to here several times and each time the experience has been less-and-less appealing. The staff has always been nice and the prices are not unfair in relation to the portion, but every consecutive visit seems to bring with it lower quality food and worse service.
The first couple times I went I really enjoyed the food and the service was great. The food came out fresh and had a great taste and the server was attentive and efficient. Sitting on the patio was nice right along Main Street under the trees, no complaints!
However, each time after that brought with it lower standards and less the appetizing food. Whether it be the time we went and a group of men were smoking out on the patio with staff doing nothing about it, or the time when our server forgot about us and by the time she remembered we had to ask another server several times to help us and when our server finally did come it was an hour later with cold food.
All-in-all the place seemed to be slowly going downhill, however if your looking for some classic American fare or a sports bar atmosphere this might be the place for you. I will say personally that my best experience with this place was early weekend lunches on the patio, so you can take that as you will.
Great food. Good location. Nice place to hang out
Really good food in a fun atmosphere, with a dedicated staff
Attended a friend's birthday party here on Dec. 3, 2016 and it was a HORRIBLE experience! The party had been reserved way in advance and no one was told that Lil' Mo (singer) was going to be there on this night. The manager had the party set up in the VIP section and informed us AFTER the fact that we would have to move AND pay to see Lil' Mo! They gave us the option to move to a banquet room free of charge but, it was cold and in the very back of the building. We were then told that we could wait another 30 minutes and we could move back out to the front. Seemingly, this was a good idea until it was time to order...which was also time consuming and when we did receive our food, some was cold and some was left out (the birthday girl got her food AFTER everyone else had eaten!!! )Then comes the time to pay and that alone was a freaking nightmare. The waitress was so frazzled that she couldn't get anyone's ticket right. We sat an hour while she tried to get it figured out. When we were finally leaving there was another issue and the waitress and a security guard came to the front to talk to some people in our party. All I can say is that this was the result of very poor management. Every one in our party was unhappy and needless to say that we will not be patronizing Roger Brown's ever again!
All around better than the first time I went. This is the second time for me. Way better staff and the crab cakes sandwich, perfect. Not wet like other restaurants!!
This is a Community meeting spot as well as a Destination for the visitors. Good food, Sports Bar and frequently live music. Always a good choice!
Love Roger Browns since it's been opened. The drinks have gotten better over the years, not watered down anymore. Service is exceptional, food is great but the live entertainment? Rajazz? THE BEST!
Great bartenders the kitchen is a little slow but the food is delicious.
Had to wait 20 on a payday Friday. Staff wasn't very helpful. Another virginia place with bad service. No adequate explanation for a half empty restaurant. Suck
Located in the Beautiful historic district of Portsmouth, Va. The bar is huge with a great selection of Beer, Wine, Liquor, and pretty much anything of your liking. The food is amazing, great seasoned down south frying. The staff and customer service is A1 from the time you walk in, to the time you exit. Great place for tourist attraction as well. And lastly, its owned by renowned football great Mr. Roger Brown.
I strongly recommend this place.
1) Atmosphere! Very relaxing yet somehow still even kid friendly!
2) Friendly staff! Our server was a gentleman and incredibly observant. He even brought out our kid's food before ours so we could feed her before enjoying our meals.
3) Food! It was reasonably priced, DELICIOUS, and the servings were huge!
Great food, well seasoned. Good music on the weekends. However, it's been REALLY hit or miss when it comes to bartenders so I request specific ones. I think the bartenders should all undergo a training to see who knows what, and where they need strength building.
Great food, great service with fun staff and a wonderful band the night we went -- Soul Intent. Plus huge TVS all around in case your guy doesn't dance. Parking garage very close by. Easy to get to.
The shrimp and grits are awesome. The liver and onions are fantastic. I love the chicken and waffles too. Try everything 😉
This is an awesome restaurant in downtown Portsmouth. We brought the kids and they seated us by the projectors which were playing different sports and a cartoon channel. The seating had a speaker which you can set to which television you're watching. It's was really great for the kids. The wait staff was also great as well as the food. Love Roger Browns.
ESSENTIAL during NFL football season. The projector screens with selectable audio output combined with good food and friendly staff. You will see me here every Sunday the Chicago Bears are playing. No where else does it better than Roger Brown's.
Not the fastest service in the world, but other than that they've got great food. Not for the light of wallet. There was some shell in the crabcake sandwich though.
Overall, nice place, and huge. It's bigger on the inside.
The food was delicious. It was served quickly. The staff made sure your glasses were filled an the food was hot when it arrived. My family enjoyed everything an we will return next week.
Everything was great the sweet potato fries and the Chesapeake burger was out of the world. And there famous bread pudding was to die for. And the server was hands-on. Overall it was a great experience I must say.
Great food, poor service. They had plenty of open tables but we still had to wait 10 mins. to be seated. Food took forever to come and then they brought one of us the wrong meal. Only 3 of us, but all our meals cane at a different time. Had to ask 4 times for a glass of water. But the food was very good!
Waiter did not address our table for at least ten minutes after we sat down. Drinks that were ordered were not available... (In a sports bar...?) Meal orders taken incorrectly. One delivered as a dine in the other as a carry out...! When I expressed that MY meal, which because of time I did accept and tried to eat...), was tasteless, tasted processed and undesirable, I was charged on my bill anyway. Had to ask for a manager to get that addressed and removed from the bill... WORST EXPERIENCE EVER FROM ROGER BROWNS... and I have been patronizing this establishment for years...!!!
I love this place. Atmosphere, music... Just a lively place. My only gripe would be parking. It doesn't stop me from still going periodically though... It's just not my regular spot
First time I came, the bartender ignored me for 7 minutes. I was the only one at the bar. She made eye contact with me multiple times and continued taking to her friend/co-worker. I'm here now, once again with very slow service. The bartender was moving very slowly. This place is great but not for a lunch break. Probably won't come back during my lunch break again and I go out to eat 1-2 times weekly depending on how often I work. Great food though.
The food is great but literally the last 6 times I have been there my food has been delivered and no silverware. I have had to wait 10 minutes before to get the silverware. Twice I requested it from the server prior to food coming and still did not get it. Obviously they think we are going to eat everything with our fingers since this has happened so many times! Please order more silverware so you can accommodate your customers and they can eat their food while it is still hot. Still debating if I will return.
We went last night to the event that was being promoted. The servers were truly over worked which turned into poor service. It was not the servers fault it was managements. When you promote a event like last nights event double your servers, cooks the whole nine. We got there at 8 and didn't get food until 10. It was poor planning on managements part. The servers were trying their best but they were very overwhelmed. Next time please plan better. Because in the end you will lose more money then you make.
We went to this restaurant 2 days in a row. The first visit was outstanding. Great food and a good server. The restaurant is under construction to remodel a portion into a new stage for live music. The owner has the construction going on during business hours so all we heard half way through our first visit was power tools constantly. The following day we went back, being that impressed with our dinner that we sat outside due to the construction. The food was not as good, being sent back and it didn't seem to have the same quality and elegance as the first time. A few other problems arose which I care not to say lead to my low rato by for this local restaurant.
The manager at this establishment need to be fired. He is the most unprofessional individual I have came across in awhile. I and some girlfriends had dinner last weekend, the waitress told us the wrong price for sides after we noticed it on our receipt. We asked if we could speak to manager to pay the price that was quoted. We seen the waitress approach the manager and speaking to him. The waitress returns and said, the manager will be with us in a few minutes. This dude walked around the restaurant for 15 minutes pretty much doing nothing and was avoiding us. We (all 5 of us) was going to approach the manager with our grievance but we all came to a intellectual and professional conclusion that it would be a waste of our precious time. I gave it one star due to unprofessional-ism of the manager because the manager is reflection of service you will receive.
I've been to Roger Brown's many times over the years. Food is pretty good and the service was friendly. I'll continue to give them my business.
While I'm not necessarily a seeker of sports bars...but if I were, this is one I would enjoy! Good food, screens galore, seating for those who may not want all the hoopla, and nice patio! Portions are plentiful and pork chops are excellent. Another favorite is the Trio 316 (shrimp, calamari & catfish chips). Good tea too 😁
Food is ok, Asian nachos are delicious, everything else is average. Cheap beer during football. All in all it's a decent place for a bite and a drink. They have live music on the weekends if that's your thing.
We always take a group of people to Roger Brown's for dinner and drinks during the State EMS Symposium in November. The food is always great, but the service can vary. This year we had La'Wanda. She was great! No problems at all, and had a group of 8. It was the best service we had all week of dinning out!
The food took FOREVER to come (50 minutes). I only ordered wings. We were told someone must have taken it order. The manager offered 50% off the check. Then it took another 20 minutes to get the bill. I will not be giving them my time any more
I went here for a paint night event. Everything was great during the event but when the event was over and a friend and I were seated for food, we sat for twenty mins before we left and went somewhere else. We weren't given silverware, told that they would be with us shortly. Nothing. Three waitresses walked past us and not a word. I will go back for an event and drinks at the bar but nothing more than that.
Great staff and amazing food. We came in with a group of 25 for lunch and they took wonderful care of us
Today our group of approximately 45 attendees participated in a Norfolk Naval shipyard retirement luncheon at Roger Brown's Restaurant. Service was initially slow as we arrived staggerdly. Once all were seated & served, the food was hot, tasty and plentiful. We were seated in a private section with ample servers. Thank you for a delightful epicurean experience.
I normally do 5 stars for this restaurant. But today my wings were bad. I don't know if its bad sauce or chicken. Taste real gamie almost raw but they were cooked well. Other than this everything else was delicious. Service was great. Just couldn't get the wings right.
I am always a fan of a really good cheeseburger and this place did just. Food was cooked to perfection and this was hands down one of the best burgers I have had in a long time
Excellent, fresh-tasting burger, crispy fries that were tender inside and 20+ draft beers from which to choose. (Try the Port City porter!) The place is huge - plenty of room for you and your friends and family. Sports bar, so lots of TVs on the walls and over the bar. Definitely recommend.
Love the ribs here. Although, last time I ordered a to-go, the mashed potatoes were not seasoned at all. It’s like they took them straight out the water and mashed them up and sent them on. Overall, it’s a great place to eat and just have fun!
The food was good. The service was great. The facilities needs renovation and a thorough cleaning. Smells...
I have been coming here for several years. I think their food used to be better, like the sauces for chicken used to have more flavor, but otherwise the food is still very very good. They have big portion sizes so you won't be disappointed or still hungry afterward. It's a huge place, so they can handle a crowd. I've only ever had food take a long time a couple of times, but the staff always apologized were considerate. They have a kid's menu and are always welcoming of little ones. It doesn't feel like a "bar" but more of a restaurant with several seating areas to accommodate your group. There is a large bar area in front, though if you want that. I know they do events and have a party room in the back for banquets. They have large screen TVs and little speakers in the booths so you can tune into which screen you want to watch. Close to the Children's Museum and parking garage!
My Husband and I stopped in for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised. The customer service was great-welcoming and very patient...I was kind of indecisive about my order. The restaurant is very spacious and clean, we felt comfortable while there. The lemon pepper wings were on point...delicious!! I ordered a drink off the menu-French 75- and the bartender went above and beyond to perfect it, I was very pleased. We will definitely return and plan to become Roger Brown's regulars. I strongly recommend this establishment for outings, functions, catch the games and impromptu drop-ins...you won't be disappointed.
The first thing I noticed upon walking in is it’s freaking huge. I thought it was a restaurant by day and nightclub by night. The hostess explained it’s not a nightclub but they do have a stage and sometimes use the open space as a dance floor. It’s Definitely a nice place, nice size to rent out for an event. There were so many things on the menu. I couldn’t try them all so I decided to get...I think it was the seafood platter or seafood combo. I love the fact, that you could get it fried or grilled. I’ve had too much fried food this month so I decided on grilled and it was delicious. Not many people get grilling right especially when it comes to seafood. The MNC was good but a little to greasy. Actually it was a lot too greasy. I had to dab some of the grease with a napkin. If I had a spoon, I bet I could’ve scooped a few spoonfuls of grease out but I digress because overall I enjoyed the meal. Good ambiance, good staff, good food. Ill be back again.
This place has good food. I've never had a bad meal here. The only complaint I have was with the last visit where the waiter did not monitor our drinks, and half of us did not get a single refil. Other than that this place 8s excellent!!!
Quiet for St Paddy's day. Waitress, Tara, was professional and congenial. Helped change station on big screen to March madness game. Food decent.
By far my favorite restaurant to go to in Portsmouth Virginia and there aren't many. The atmosphere is very chill and the huge TVs with the booths in the back are ideal if you're bringing kids in with you. I wouldn't say it's for the younger crowd which again is good if you are bringing kids with you and not to worry about it being rowdy and raunchy. You take my son here and just watching football dissect some plays in the huge TVs and enjoy some hot wings. Great place to bring the large group for functions also if they have a couple of big banquet rooms to rent out if you need.
Ordered food to go. Minus the time taking longer than told and missing an of item of food, the food, drinks and service was great. Since I had to wait I ordered a a drink from the bar their signature sangria, which was different in a good way it had some type of spice which was a pleasant surprise it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet which I like I did squeeze some lemon in it and that made it taste really good. Just as I finished the drink the food came out when I saw something was missing I was tempted to order another drink but the missing item was retrieved pretty quickly. I will be back their desserts looked amazing.
If you are in the area, you MUST stop in. Ribs were fall-off-the-bone! My wife ordered the lump crab cakes. They were well seasoned with almost no "filler", just two beautiful crab-filled delights. They were large enough that she couldn't finish them (so I begrudgingly helped, lol). I don't know how they prepare their collard greens but they need to bottle that or share the recipe! Great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff.
The place is nice. Staff are friendly. Tonight was a bit on the rough side. They we're short staffed and were lagging behind considerably.
The waiter, whom explained to us the situation, took care of us best he could with what they had. Ultimately we were taken care of by the manager with a discount on the meal.
I want to give this a better score. It had to happen on probably one of the busiest nights of the year. It was honestly overall an okay experience and I hope to be able to rate them higher the next time around.
Nice restaurant, nice staff, nice food. Unfortunately, my husband and I waited at least 50 minutes for our food. We saw several people come in place orders and after waiting for 20 minutes get up and leave. There were beers that had been ordered and because of the slow service the people who ordered them left. The beers sat on the table 15 minutes before a server removed them. Another server came out with an appetizer but the patrons had left. We stayed at that restaurant because we were attending a 7:30 play and did not have enough time to go elsewhere. We had 3 different workers who approached us and heard our "cry". Eventually we received our food, which was a rushed meal. We were late getting to the play. I would like to give a higher rating but we were never approached by anyone in management with an explanation or apology. Please get it together or you will continue to lose patrons and money.
There was a note on the bottom of google starting with ‘tried 22 wings and these are the best and the worst’. I should’ve opened said article because roger browns wings were listed under ‘ok’. Also I ordered buffalo but I think it was actually lemon pepper with some hot sauce on top.
However I thoroughly enjoyed the she crab soup. I have tried the top rated one in the area and I prefer this.
Performed here last year. Love the stage and the food.... Heck ! I just might have lunch there today. Fried Green 🍅 and the Steak. Try the Steak.
Would like to sit outside with my daughter but, too many adults.
Tonight was my first visit. I have heard so much about this place. I wish my review was a great one, but not so much. The service was absolutely horrible. Starting with the hostess who seemed he could care less to seat us. Once seated we waited almost 10 minutes until I finally tracked someone down to get us some drinks. We waited another 5 to 10 minutes for them to arrive. In the meantime 2 waitresses were deciding who was gonna take our table. I had to get up to get silverware and napkins. Anytime we wanted anything we had to flag someone down to get our waiter. I will say the food was delicious!!! You must try it if you haven't been. Just don't expect good service and plan on waiting awhile for food and drinks.
Delicious food, but before we went there I looked at their menu online and when we got there the food and prices were different and more expensive. We ordered and the waitress asked if we wanted fries. I asked if fries came with the meal and she said yes. But when we got our check we were charged $1.50 extra for each. We didn't realize until after we had paid. Oh well, at least the service and food was great! Won't be going back.
I was at a baby shower in one of the private rooms in the back. I've been here before on other occasions, but did not know the private rooms existed. Their staff was short handed, but the server we had did a lot of work. She bussed tables, kept the buffet stocked, took my and others take out order, and served drinks. I was tired for her. Some help came near the end to bus tables. The food is always tasty, and even though I don't drink... they must have been great because they continued to flow.
Food doesn't have the same quality that it had years ago. I simply ordered beef nachos and instead of making fresh meat, they gave me a broken up burger. I was not amazed at all and didn't feel that it was worth the money. This place smelled like old mop water and the carpet is filthy.
-Service is horrible.
-Kitchen and bar take forever to make food/drink
-All 3 servers I’ve had don’t pay attention or don’t care about your patronage.
-Food is subpar and that’s being nice.
I’ve been here 3 times and each time I’ve received horrible service from the waitresses. It’s sad to say the only good server is the manager who assisted me after my waitresses take 30 minutes to come back after ordering drinks. Today they are a little busy, but our waitress took 45 minutes to take our order and serve us our drinks. Completely unprofessional service. Would not recommend.
I ordered wings as an appetizer and they were over cooked. I also ordered quest cheese and chips and the chips were the crumbs from the bottom of the bag. My dinner came and fries were cold. Sent them back and they were returned cold again. The manager Katie insisted that they had just come out of the fryer and out to me. I responded if that was the case I would be chewing and blowing and the same time. Another person in my party was bought out cold collard greens. I and another person in my party was bought out cold crab cakes and cold sweet potatoes. The service was poor.
I like Rodger Brown's the food is good, reasonably priced and the menu has variety. The staff is friendly and the service is good. The atmosphere is a mixed between sports bar and comfortable homestyle feel. There's a nice fireplace in one room. There also outside dining where you can watch the downtowner's walking by.
I wish I could give zero stars.....I can honestly say at one point Roger Browns was my favorite restaurant for excellent food, excellent service and a great atmosphere and I’ve been many times over the past 10 years. On 10/14/18 my son wanted to celebrate his 15th bday at this restaurant and I was so disappointed in how terrible the service was. We were sat at 4:10pm places are orders, received our appetizer in a timely manner and after that we never received any of our food that was ordered. Was told at 5:05pm a manager would come talk to us, he came over and all he said was the food will be right out. We waited until 5:15pm and decided to just get up and leave. As we walked past the manager on the way out, he didn’t even try to stop us and apologize for the HORRIBLE service. Shame on you!
Update on my previous visit.
12/28/2018 my family had dinner here once again and only because my other son wanted dinner here for his birthday. After I vowed I would never step foot in this place again, this is what he wanted.
I can honestly say management there is HORRIBLE. After my last visit, per my previous post, the manager replied. Unfortunately while we were there last night, this particular manager, walked by my table and glanced over at us several times and didn’t have the decency to come over and say anything to us and yes, we’ve been going there for years so he knows us.
Our server was excellent and was tipped very well, but management is absolutely HORRIBLE!
My husband and I have probably eaten here 3 or 4 times now, and we've had excellent service each time. The food was great and the atmosphere is nice.
Second time here.. I want to give 4 stars...but that drink was missing 2 ingredients. The food was good. Good crowd, nice big bar area. My only issue was the staff. There were 2 or 3 servers that could have been doing more than working one table each. Our waitress, Tamika, seemed to be missing in action and then we realized she had tables all over the restaurant and was hustling! She was very nice. I would say to management to make sure all the servers are every distributed and not focused on 1 table for 2 hrs.
The food was very good 2000 when I moved here and still is. Love the crowd. They seem very into becoming acquainted and making you fit in. The hostesses have always been ve r y kind and always smiling! I like that. It relaxes you and makes you feel welcomed. I love Roger Brown's!!!$
Such an embarrassment. Our food took a literal hour to come. The server finally came to tell us our food was ready and he was going to get it when he saw us packing up to go. And yes, the hostess will have you standing at the door looking lost for a long time unless you take upon yourself to sit down since there is no direction to.
I went for a business get together. It was definitely not what I was expecting. The service was extremely slow and choppy. It was as if they had never dealt with a large party, which perhaps the server hadn't. She really tried hard to be friendly and outgoing and to do her best, but it took way too long to get a receipt and way too long to get food that was still cold. She was very quick to get it warmed up and never lost her professionalism, even when someone else in the group returned their mixed drink. The pictures on line definitely did not reflect what I saw the other night.
I ordered fried green tomatoes. For 8.99 expected more than five pieces. They were greasy and not flavorful. The dipping sauce was salty. The coagulated lump of coffee cheese grits was unnecessary. The wings were decent. Probably not going back
First time at Roger Brown's on recommendation from freinds and coworkers. Really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, loved the food and our server was outstanding!! Ordered food at 230 and was eating 20 minutes later, our server continued to check with us to see if we needed anything. So glad I didn't go by the reviews, we will definitely be back!!
Why is Roger Browns is always nice when you can get GOOD parking. It's laid-back, they had a reggae band there lastnight by the name of Nature's Child, which was phenomenal. Felt like I was in Jamaica somewhere. I wish they would do reggae more often. The food is always good and hot.
Nice spot in Spring and Summer, as a matter of fact the entire High Street is jumping during those times of the year and it's right off the Harbor..
Live raggae band was dope!! Nice table set-up with plenty of waiters and waitresses. Food and drinks were good...
Had sister in law birthday party. The food was great. Food came out fast. Only one appetizer got lost but was found fast. All in all for a group 30 everyone left happy.
We decided to eat here because we were going to be in the area today and had read good comments about this place. I ordered the fried chicken 1 piece dinner with collard greens and my husband had chicken tenders with bbq sauce. Both were excellent!
The cornbread is wonderful, also.
Highly recommend this place. Noon on Saturday, hardly anyone here. Place is huge and staff is friendly!
I’ve been here several times but last night was my last visit. The waitress was very slow in serving. My collard greens were cold, my shrimp was still raw and I didn’t notice until I ate it, so not only did I need to send the collards back I had to turn down my entire plate. The waitress continue to ask me to scrape off my sides onto another plate to recook and bring it back. I thought that was just poor customer service. The manager wanted to recook the shrimp I ordered 12 but he only recooked 6. I turned it all down and my friend and I was just overwhelmed with the way things were handled after serving a customer raw shrimp so be wanted to leave. The manager John was very rude and stated you have to pay for you drinks rather your food was messed up or not. He didn’t apologize for the mistake the cook made he was very rude harassing us for the $5.98 for two drinks. I kindly paid and left and after all these years I won’t be back. Please give your manager John a customer service class. I own my own business and wouldn’t dare treat my customers this way.
I live in the area and this was my first visit to this restaurant. I had a burger and it was excellent. I sat at the bar with a friend and the bartenders were great, very friendly and attentive. They talked to us about the menu items we had questions about and the food came out pretty quickly. All the TVs were really great.
Best option that wasn't jam packed for the night. May have been better not in a large group. Added a little confusion. The food was delicious. The biggest piece I didn't enjoy was the DJ. Couldn't have been more than 20 people in this large restaurant and the DJ was blasting music, as if we were in a night club. Couldn't carry on conversations with my party. Automatic gratuity added, but also a sneaky 18 percent service charge. Maybe that's a thing in that area of VA. Would visit again....just in a smaller group and no DJ.
I've been to this location a few times as it is very close to my job. However, yesterday for a lunch meeting I decided to eat outside and ordered a salad. Got halfway through my salad and one of the pieces of lettuce had a dead bug on it. Without the manager, Bianca Rizzo, looking she immediately said that she will not take it off because I ate outside. When I spoke to her I reminded her that bugs outside flying around are still alive and when they land on lettuce they don't just die. She decided to take $3.00 off the salad and stated that she didn't even look. I believe this was very poor service and had she looked she would have seen it was a dead bug from lettuce that isn't washed. I wonder how many I actually ate. This manager needs a bit more training on customer service.
The location is amazing! The food was delicious and hot when served. The staff and bartenders were friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be back again!
This was my first visit. I was expecting so much more. We sat at the near empty bar and waited for a solid 10 plus minutes for the bartenders to acknowledge us. A person from our group went over to request service from the two bartenders who were not busy with other customers. All the while, we were in direct eye shot of 3 people at the host who didn't notice or care (not sure which) that no staff had so much as said hi, placed a napkin (universal symbol that someone has greeted guests and taken orders) etc. Once the bartender took our orders, many of the drinks we requested were out of stock, so he had to come back to ask us for alternate choices. He was very friendly which definitely helped. We stayed a short while and moved on to another place.
Last night was my first time going there, the food was great. The atmosphere was nice and so was my waitress. The band Breadwine & Blooze was awesome, I hope they will be back soon. I had a really fun night out. Thank you
I really enjoyed the place. The caesar salad and chicken soup was very good. We really liked the atmosphere. If I am down that way again I will stop by.
I have gone over 5 times. The food is good. I like the layout of the restaurant. However, the service could be better. Our waiters had trouble answering menu questions and remembering orders. And there was an overall lack of enthusiasm. I am not asking for a Broadway show, but at least pretend you care about your job. They were not rude or anything like that. And any service issue we had was addressed without complaint. My family and I tip well and the better the service, the higher the tip. I will continue to go, but better customer service will definitely improve my experience.
This was my second time here. It was a Friday and they had a live band playing which was really nice. They played a nice collection of hits (mostly older) which was right up my alley. Waitress was friendly and did everything with a positive attitude. Our meals didn't take long at all. I had the chicken fettuccine alfredo which AMAZING! I left off one star only because I felt like the drink selection was a little limited. Other than that it was really nice. I would definitely go again. 💙
What an amazing experience! Bruce, you really brought creole to Virginia. I LOVE my catfish and grits! John thank you for accepting the special order. You all made my day! I recommend adding this to the menu as it deserves every star in this rating plus 10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I was there with a large group and they didn't put in food orders for about 10 of us. I ordered a salad and the vegetables were not fresh and the totally forgot to put the goat cheese on it.
The servers were nice, but I felt like they were over their head with the size of the group. I just expected better.
We enjoyed our dinner there and would go back. The only issue is that when we went it was around 9pm and at 10 there was an event starting if you wanted to stay you needed to pay the cover to stay. That should be something they tell you just in case you don't have your food yet or would like to eat not in a rush like we did.
I was at Roger Brown's for a function. I got there before it started so went to the bar for a drink. The bar tender had a friendly mannerism. The place is cute and has quite a bit of history to it. Very spacious to hold big crowds as well. There were TVs there to watch sports. I will be going back.
When I first tried the Low Country Shrimp & Grits, I was amazed. Years went by and I never forgot my favorite dish. I've tried the Chicken & Waffles and that was just as tasty. I like the food selection, atmosphere and overall vibe. I've had a few bad experiences I'll chalk up to a personnel issue. Otherwise, a great chillout spot in historic downtown Portsmouth.
We were very disappointed during our visit of October 23rd. We placed our orders including appetizer of cheese sticks. We received 3 cold rolls & the waiter took them back & brought us hot rolls with butter. Later one in our party received her chicken livers with onions & mashed potatoes. He said my order of Quesidiells will be coming up in a few minutes. I nibbled on cheese sticks while trying to be patient. The waiter returned to take empty dishes & was surprised to see I had not received my meal. I thought he was coming back but instead a waitress came to our table with my meal after we had placed order over an hour before. I politely told her I didn’t have time to eat as we had to go. I asked her for a box so I could take it with me. I was ready to get out after all that & never even were we offered a refill of water or sweet tea! But they did not refuse to charge almost $8.00 tip. Don’t worry as we will not be back but I can’t understand how lunch crowd gets in & out so quickly & we arrived at 1pm & there were few customers in restaurant! We will be passing this info on to others!
The shrimp and grits were out of this world. That alone was worth 5 Stars. Then I had a Purple Lollipop! And it was the icing on the cake. Service was great.
Food was pretty good. I had a crab cake and fried shrimp. I'd eat it again. Myself and the 2 other people I was with ordered drinks that the waiter said were a lower price with happy hour. When we got the bill the drinks were all priced regular. When we questioned this, we were told only one drink was a happy hour special and sorry your waiter is new and didn't know what he was talking about. Wow! Watch your checks!
Just plain horrible service. Food as expected from a pub, pretty good but not gourmet and that’s ok or you walked onto the wrong place. My meal: Burger and beer. 1 and a half hours. I expected better from a place that’s been around for so long. Maybe just my server or that night. Good luck.
First of all, we used to love this place. However, yesterday's visit was an eye opener. We went in for a late lunch and it was not busy. We were seated and looked over the menu. Prices had gone way up on all of the food we used to love, substantially. $12 for crab dip. Hell no baby. Then after 20 minutes of waiting to for a server to take our orders. We decided it was time to go somewhere else. Saddened by this experience, I doubt we will return to a restaurant we frequented weekly for a long time. I could not believe how much the prices had gone up on everything. The lousy service saved us fifty bucks.
The relaxed ambiance was so inviting, fast, friendly and professional service. The food was disrespectful it was so so delicious... Is the Chef single? Lol The DJ played all my 80's and 90's favorites. I would have gave five stars but the ladies room was horrific. I know it was mostly the nasty grown customers but you should still represent janitorial excellence.
First time here went fairly well. Definitely a solid sports bar - plenty of TVs, to include audio boxes at the tables, live music on occasion, and the bar and drink menu is likewise accommodating. Menu is pretty decent. You could definitely can me here on a date for two or with a large group and make it work. Would have considered four/five stars, but the food was coming out a bit slow and a few things were wrong on the order; would normally be acceptable, but the restaurant was pretty slow for the staff they had working.
I visited Roger Brown’s on Saturday Nighy with my entire family as we were visiting from Miami. As we walked in, the place looked to be a nice establishment. After being seated 9 deep, we sat there for :25 min waiting for somebody/anybody to acknowledge us. When they finally came a young man, Jonathan (who was very nice) took our drink order. He returned :20 min later with cognac on the rocks when it should have been straight with no ice. My Uncle tasted the drink and it was whiskey. He went to complain to the manager and got into a heated discussion with the bartender, who asked my Uncle if he wanted to take it outside. I couldn’t believe the bartender asked him that. I know what cognac tastes like and my Uncle definitely knows. If you’re paying for cognac, you shouldn’t expect whisky and a threat from the bartender. Little did the bartender know, we had our Uncle’s back and I know the bartender didn’t want to see us!!! The customer service in Roger Brown’s is as bad as I’ve ever seen it. My cousin recommended it because she said the food was good. When u have a restaurant and your customer service is not good, fire the employees and replace them with people who understand the importance of customer service. Finally, Ebony who refused to serve us, would have easily walked out of there with a big tip!
I am extremely disappointed in our POOR service tonight. We sat there for an hour just to receive our drinks 40 minutes after sitting. Yes, JUST drinks. A waiter only attempted to take our order as my daughter asked the host to find someone to assist us. Ebony, the waitress, avoided assisting us so a young man by the name of Johnathan assisted us with our drinks. Ebony stated she would take our food order an never returned. This restaurant provided terrible customer service for a family of 9. We will never recommend or revisit this restaurant again.
I'm from Michigan came to see my brother. Best food and music oh and dancing all in the same building. Also drinks. Luv it my new place to be in VA
We drove from Florida for a funeral in Richmond last weekend, while we were in town decided to go see some family in Portsmouth. We went to Rodger Brown's to eat while there. The Server was Amazing, a young lady about to move to South Korea to teach English, hands down the best EVER! She was very attentive and patient since we had two 80+ people with us that night. Answered all their questions! It was your first night of the Restaurant of the week menu. HUGE portions and all cooked perfectly and VERY tasty! I tried the Crab cake and shrimp while my husband ate the steak. PERFECTION from the appetizers to the to die for desert! I highly recommend you try this place! Now the older family members ate the Flounder, I have never seen such a HUGE piece of fish on a plate before! They ate it for dinner that night and lunch the next day too. Thank You Rodger Brown's for a wonderful dinner and special THANKS to MALISSA MEACHAM-PERRY the manager on duty for making sure we were properly taken care of! YOUR THE BEST!
I love this place. Their menu is full of great soul food options. Wait staff is friendly and attentive and never a wait to be seated. Live music adds a certain old NY lounge ambiance which make this a sure go to spot. I would give 10 stars if I could.
Awesome restaurant, the food was delicious and we'll seasoned within standard add salt and pepper to your liking but I doubt you will... Bartender Luke has great customer service and is very down-to-earth fellow... Live band live band good music great atmosphere. We can't wait to go back.
Went to Roger Browns for a lunch date one day and really liked the space and layout! The food wasn’t bad.
But when I went back again, I went for my moms surprise birthday party!!! The room that we had was a nice size. The staff helped me with anything I needed and we had our own server! We ordered wings, veggie and something else but those wings were BOMB!!! After a certain time, the place turn into a club or something and that turned out nice as well. We went from the surprise birthday party straight to the “after party” lol.. Everyone enjoyed their time!!
Needless to say I WILL BE BACK!!!
Back again. I rarely order beef or pork from restaurants because I'm meticulous on how it's cooked so I'd rather make it myself at home. I took a chance and...read this and 199 more
