How would you rate Price's Chicken Coop?
I love fried Chicken and Price's did it just right. I felt blessed, like I had been to church. If you're in Charlotte you need to go and let it bless you.
I respect the food and all, but why in hell would you tow cars from your huge parking lot after hours? Especially when its really the only parking available in a neighborhood that attracts people from all over town? That makes no damn sense. It doesn't hurt your business at all unless there're people there for morning deliveries. Have the towing done past midnight or something sensible at least.
This food is good. however, I live far away from price's. I stopped there coming from s.c. only to get home (university) and the fish was over cooked! Too hard to even eat. If you call the store, you'll never get anyone, but the answering machine where you can't leave a message. Very disappointing.
Hated this visit!
Best fried chicken I've ever eaten. Fast, efficient service.
Been eating here all my life, and they still hold the title for the best food and tea ever! Friendly staff just tops it all off!
New to the Charlotte area and was ready for my fish Friday fix. A friend recommended this place and after reading all of the great reviews I was excited to stop here. Unfortunately to my surprise, the cashier was rude of coarse. My fish was very greasy and salty. None of my food was freshly cooked hot. It was just warm. Then to top it off, they give u 1 packet of free ketchup and they had the nerve to charge for hot sauce packets (none for free). Anyone have better suggestions for charlotte fish on Fridays???
Always loved this place. I get really greedy when I visit. The food is always hot, did I say always hot, o yea "HOT bring freshly served". They are out to please you & to get you in & out as quickly as possible. Highly recommended for good eating.
Hot and fresh chicken. Very tasty!!! Customer service is good. Beware it can get crowded especially before closing snd the doors shut 15 minutes before closing.
Great food with fair prices and a good dose of southern hospitality thrown in! The lady at the counter called me "sugar" that made my day. Watch out for the sweet tea, it's no joke!
To me the place is over exaggerated because of how many years they’ve been in business. The food is good but it’s not the best chicken in the city. Now that sweet tea is the best. Fish aite I can careless for the shrimp it’s not good to me. But try it you may like it.
If you are looking for a great place to get your food this is the place. Chicken is their signature but everything is great. Make sure you bring cash since it is cash only, they do have an ATM for those who forget. Friendly staff will always get you with a smile. This place gets really busy so if your planning on lunch plan ahead. There is no dining area but do not let that stop you. You can sit in your car, eat on the side of the hill like most or if you can actually wait and not succumb to the aroma take it back to your office or home and enjoy there, but I bet you can not.
This review is for the chicken only, since that is only what I get when I come because I don't really care for their sides...the chicken is amazing and yes it is worth the hype, television appearances, etc.! You can tell that they use a very simple rub of salt and pepper, with a hint of celery seed and maybe paprika? People complain about the lack of seasoning, but I believe that is the secret to their success (simplicity). It is always fresh and juicy. I've been coming for a couple of years and have never had a dry piece of chicken. Will continue to visit.
As another reviewer stated, make sure to bring cash because they do not accept debit and credit cards. They do have an ATM on hand but the fee is around $3. The place is very busy but the lines move pretty quickly.
Food was ok. Service was amazing. Art helped me order for my first time. There was about five lines of people and I watched them all and hoped in his line and it was the longest. But I love the way he handled each one of his guest. I am very big on guest service and he hit all the marks. Introduced himself and made me feel welcome. My girls loved his attitude and his name. He would make anyone come back. Give him a raise cause he is awesome. The front face is most important. The food could be great but if guest service sucks you have lost a guest. Great job Art!
This place is DELICIOUS. One of the best carryout spots I've been to...I see why they've lasted in a fast paced city for 60 years!! I came to visit Charlotte and my friends suggested this place. I ordered fish and 1/4 dark meat. Everything was perfectly fried. Might I say the fish was a little better than the chicken?? Slaw was good and I don't like slaw that much. Who knew a pickle would help?! There was so much food since dinner plates come with hush puppies, fries, slaw, and bread. I only paid $13 including the sweet tea! By the way, the tea was okay. Not my favorite but washes everything down well. Reminds me of being home in the country and I loved every moment of it. Only problem is that it's still cash only and they charge for hot sauce per packet too. But I'm happy they supply an ATM.
No seating, not fast, takes cash, not heath food but very well seasoned fried chicken and fish. The sweetest sweet tea I have ever had but it goes with the food great. Skip the pie.
Price’s Chicken Coop opened in 1962 and still to this day this place is legendary for delicious fried chicken! They have been around for a very long time and still there will be a line out the door. They only take cash and now there’s parking behind the business.
I’ve ordered the fried chicken which was perfectly fried and the chicken was tender and juicy! See the photo for yourself! I have also ordered the chicken livers and they are the best I’ve had anywhere!
If you want the real deal fried chicken go to Price’s Chicken Coop! Get some of their sweet tea to wash it all down!!
One of the best known jems of Charlotte! Good bang for you buck and fast. Make sure you check their open times and bring cash, as its cash only. And don't plan on sitting down. Grab a whole bird, some sides and head home.
They have fantastic chicken. It is in a convenient location. The staff is friendly. They don't have dine in or great parking but that is easily over looked by the big portion sizes and delicious, tender chicken. I definitely recommend it.
Chicken was very tasty and very crispy. We loved the breading on the livers, but they were a bit overcooked. That's rather forgivable in my book though since livers are hard to do right.. so be sure to ask them not to cook them again. Overall one of the better places we've eaten here.
I had heard from a ton of people how Price’s was the best chicken in Charlotte. I bought into the hype and was expecting it to be mind-blowing. The line was out the door, but moved super quick. Got my half chicken dinner and the food was pretty meh. I’d go there again if somebody I was with really wanted to, but it wouldn’t be very high on my list of places to check out. If you haven’t eaten there, it’s worth a shot. It’s nice to support vintage Mom and Pop places around town.
This place used to have the best tasting chicken. Now it is just fried chicken without any taste. I stop going as often as I use to go. They need to go back to 1994 cook recipe. If you don't have the passion for cooking, it will show in the food.
If you're looking for just a great fried chicken place with authentic Southern style and flavor, and you don't mind takin it out to eat, I recommend Price's. There was a long line, as with ANY good food place, but it moved pretty fast. Wow, was the chicken good! I got the chicken plate with white meat and they gave me two pieces of chicken, a roll, coleslaw, fries AND hushpuppies. I ate some of it but it's enough for at least 2 people, trust me! Everything was excellent and the staff were super friendly, even to us "Yankees"! : )
Great food at good prices. The smell walking up to the restaurant is amazing. Make sure to have cash and patience because it gets packed and they only take cash. There is an ATM inside but it charges $3.00. This is not a restaurant that you can sit down and eat. It's take out only.
Spectacular chicken, I absolutely recommend this place. Probably the best I've had, and their sides are good, too. It's an in-and-out place, so there is no dining room, but the food is so good you'll want to enjoy it at home. Seriously, stop reading and go- the proof is in the pudding!
Anyone who likes boxed to go chicken, chicken livers, chicken sandwiches, or Whitefish should try Price's Chicken Coop. There is no inside dining. Everything is carry out. Sweet tea and canned drinks available. You better hurry while you can. Gentrification is taking over the neighborhood and they're one of the last places there of that era.
Best Chicken in Charlotte. Always a crowd but the line moves fast so dont be discouraged. Miss the tater tots they used to serve. Everything else is great. Push your way in and find a spot at the back of any of the lines. I live getting a whole bird for Fried Chicken Fridays and having it as leftovers on the weekend. Check it out.
A Charlotte institution. Be prepared for a walk up crowd at the counter, but don't let that deter you as they move customers thru quickly. No on site seating; it's all carry-out. Oh, and please don't block the door while you're waiting - they open inward for some reason, which is probably against code these days.
I hate leaving reviews less than 4, but I was disappointed. Fried chicken had No flavor. Texture was good. Well done. But had no seasoning. Cole slaw was good. Fries were good. My chicken is better 😁. But hey try it for yourself. Cash only
This is probably the best fried chicken in Charlotte. I highly recommend this place. You have to know what you want before you step to the counter and they only take cash(there's an atm on site) but you will not regret your decision to stop in. Not a dine in place, so you should also have an idea of where you're going to eat the delicious fried chicken.
The food was great! The service was even better, and I can't forget to mention how great the prices were! I love them!
Have you ever thought you found the perfect fried chicken? Well if it came from Price's then you're right on the money. I rarely go to Charlotte but when I have to, I always stop in at the Chicken Coop. I prefer the white meat chicken and most places the breast is always dried out and not very appetizing. I don't know how they do it but the chicken has a beautiful golden crispy skin that is always perfect and the chicken itself is so juicy and flavorful. If you have never been here I highly recommend it. The staff and the customers are always friendly, which in Charlotte is a rarity. I do not prefer the big city traffic and all that, but I will definitely sit through it for a chance to eat at the Chicken Coop.
Fantastic fried chicken and very fast service. BRING CASH. There's no indoor seating but plenty of outdoor places to eat within walking distance. There will be a wait at lunch, but the line moves quickly.
Price's has a great reputation (as they should) but they're a bit over-hyped in my opinion. They've been around for ages and the quality of the food is always good, but the chicken isn't always seasoned to my liking. My go-to meal is the 1/4 meal white with Iced Tea. The fish is underrated and their burgers are better than expected since they're known for chicken. The Chicken Gizzards are fire too! There's always a line waiting for food which says a lot, but don't let the bloggers and local magazines fool you thinking this is life changing chicken. It is still delicious and I'll be back soon. Be sure to bring cash.
I had the fried chicken, it was hot and moist. For me there could have been a little more seasoning, black pepper, garlic, but good. I would be back. I am still looking however for the best friend chicken! Slaw was good, fries were good, puppies were ok.
Love this place!! Food is always fresh and taste great, so does their tea! They are always packed, because that's how good the food is. If you haven't been there you need to try it for yourself.
Absolutely the best fried chicken around. That have great fish too. It is take out only. There is no place to eat inside. It is worth it. They do a huge business at lunch time. We usually eat in the car or take it to a local park when weather permits. It is cash only when paying, So remember this.
We started eating it so fast, I didn’t get a good picture. I got mixed chicken dinner with wings and hush puppies (extra fries instead of slaw). So juicy and good! Crazy busy but the lines go fast. Don’t forget it’s cash only!
Been going here since I was a little girl. My parents used to take us, now I go on my own. The food is okay...hit or miss with me, but the nostalgia that comes with the visit is what I crave. So many changes around this place, it's nice to see that something of the "old Charlotte" has been preserved. And its always crowded when I go. Love that!
This iconic Charlotte resturant serves up some great chicken, seafood and more. Fairly fast service. A bit of a hassle with parking but there is a lot in rear of building. If you like southern fried chicken you wont be disappointed.
Best of the best!! Their chicken is so good~~~ we love this place it's our favorite spot. Fresh, friendly, and fast~
Best fried Chicken in the world. Quick service with great Customer Service. CLEAN with a 98.0 rating. Love it. If you are visiting Charlotte you MUST order Chicken from the coop.
I am all for supporting anything and everything food but this was completely tasteless. I had the fried chicken box that came with a roll, cole slaw, shoe string fries, and fried chicken. Every last thing was tasteless. Not a seasoning salt or garlic powder to taste. Hot sauce couldn’t even flavor it. Don’t waste your time. But if you insist on trying, I’ve warned you!
My first visit here and the food is awesome. Prices are great and speed of service is amazing. My Fiancee and mother in-law have been here before and loved it. We will certainly go back next time we are in Charlotte
Very good fried chicken and sides. It’s cash only. There was no line and we got our food immediately. There’s nowhere to sit and I wish I had some sauces for the chicken. I didn’t go back in but I think it’s extra for the sauces. The service was good/staff was nice. Apparently this is the place to go; we went here on a recommendation. Give it a shot.
Remember going here with my mom as a little girl. Made our way there today after many years. Fish sandwich with tartar was tasty. Plenty of fish, yet wish they put a little more tartar, especially since they charge extra for it lol. Chicken wings have nice flavor as well. 🙂
Omg amazing! The fried chicken was so crispy and tasty. Very affordable!! Also the fries are awesome. So glad we stopped on our way home from the beach. Delicious!
Best chicken in Charlotte. Legitimately historical. Bring cash and be aware this is not an eat in establishment. I recommend substituting potato salad for slaw. Pro tip: wing sandwich is bone in wings with slices of bread, not a traditional sandwich.
The best fried chicken is Charlotte hands down - maybe in the whole south. Tell me you've had better - then you haven't had Prices. Not the best location - never has been but, all walks of life come here for the incredible chicken. They take CASH ONLY but, there's an ATM inside if needed.
This spot is 🔥 F🔥I🔥R🔥E🔥 I won't front and say I've tried everything they offer here; but needless to say, everything I have tried was ridiculously good. Even the wonder bread rolls they serve are 💣... My only issue regarding Price's, is that it's SO old school, (which don't get me wrong, I love that; and feel like that being the case, is absolutely a huge contributor as to why this spot is as top notch as it is,) but the one drawback surrounding this is that they ONLY accept cash. If you roll to Price's, and you've only got plastic on you, don't expect to be ordering any food- unless of course you hit the ATM, (which if my memory serves me correctly- and it VERY well may not, lol,) that I believe I recall being inside Price's, (I'm assuming to accommodate those customers who came unprepared- with only plastic,) and is also just another source of income for Price's- as that $2 or $3 fee adds up mighty quickly with all the non-cash carrying customers being not necessarily forced, but kinda only left with just that ATM as an option for them to get $...unless they're willing to leave, hit the nearest ATM of their own bank, and then return yet again- this time, finally ready to order, pay, then eat➡enjoy SOME of the best chow the city has to offer...(in my not so humble opinion, of course...😉)
This place has a steady stream of customers but no worries lots of workers are there ready willing and pleasant at keeping the flow going. I even got a free iced tea on the house. Chicken is nice and golden each time I've been.
Simple and delicious! Fast counter service with pleasant people. Found a nice shady spot outside to grub. Remember: CASH ONLY!
Excellent chicken. I wish I could have 1 or 2 livers as a side dish. Slaw and French fries are OK but could be better. But nobody does chicken better. Ice tea is very good and sweetened just right.
Went here on a recommendation from a hotel shuttle driver. We had not been warned the place does not have sit-down service. We ordered our lunch and returned to our car parked a block away (which was OK because it was hot and we turned on the rental car air conditioner). I had the fish sandwich and French fries. The fish sandwich is impressive, filled with multiple fillets of batter fried perch. Tartar sauce is extra. The fish was tender and delicious. The fries were fairly standard. I got a can of ginger ale from the pop machine onsite. Overall, fun experience. The gal who took my order is a smiley lady with loads of personality. I would like to return to try their fried chicken.
I went here today, 8/27/19, after not being able to go for about 2 to 3 years. The front line staff cashiers are very nice, quick and efficient. I really like that . But I don't know who the cooks are now but it really doesn't taste as good as I remember. Very disappointed. I was wondering why the line was not wrapped around the sidewalk like it used to be. The hushpuppies have a sour taste like they were made with buttermilk or sour cream. Why??? Who does that? Also, they are a CASH ONLY establishment... In 2019!! Smh.
Damn good food. Great staff. Friendly and helpful. This place has a wonderful business model: simple menu, great pricing, very fast service, friendly, and very efficient. Even though we had 5+ people in front of us, we were in and out in 2-3 minutes. Be warned, there is no place to sit, counter service only. And my only real gripe... Who doesn't have mayo! Even still.. 6/5 stars!
Multiple people recommended Price’s to me, and I wasn’t disappointed. The coke slaw was among the creamiest that I have ever had, and the fries were crisp as well. But, the chicken was the star of the show. Especially if you like dark meat, you cannot do better than Price’s!
Old school fried chicken that you have to try. Bring cash to pay (they also have an ATM in case you forget). Bought a whole box for dinner. Nothing but bones left in the box at the end of the meal.
Best fried chicken in Charlotte. That's just not my opinion, ask anyone. You do have to pay in cash, but it's definitely worth a trip to the ATM.
Growing up I've eaten here 1000x or more and today everything in my order was disgusting...how? It's only 10:45a why is the fish ice cold yet greasy as ever and the chicken skin soft which means it has been sitting a while today was a poor choice and $30 wasted... Will I return? SURE it's a place I've eaten at for 30 years but definitely need to replace or retrain the cooks...
Has been almost 40 years since I have enjoyed chicken from Price's Chicken Coop. Still as delicious today as I remember it being. No fuss, no muss. Just great chicken!
Wife had it for the first time today. She says, YUM!
Go. You will love it!
That was a solid fried chicken experience I just had. Even the slaw was damn good. The prices are fair, the service is quick, and the staff were friendly.
It wasn’t until I saw the familiar sign that I remembered where I was. I was daydreaming as I walked down Camden, idly meandering around South End after finishing a rather grueling early afternoon of meetings. It was just after 2pm and I realized I hadn’t eaten yet. Not since last night. If this were 2010 I would have grabbed a BBQ Chicken Burrito at Phat Burrito across the street but alas, at the place it once stood the fare is now decidedly lighter. But then I remembered. My grandma had given me $20 on my birthday a few weeks prior and I still had it. I was carrying cash. And if you ever dine in South End you’ll know the familiar pain of craving Price’s with nought but plastic in your pocket. I almost floated through the air into the cramped lobby with the hand-written menu updates and the white-clad staff and the cash-only cash registers. I ordered a 1/4 chicken white with fries and hush puppies plus a sweet tea. I proudly handed over my Andrew Jackson, receiving a Hamilton and a Washington or two in change. I walked back outside carrying the precious white box. I meant to walk back to my office and eat it there, but I didn’t make it. I found a bench along the light rail and enjoyed it as joggers passed by and dogs pressed in to investigate. The chicken was, as it always is, perfectly fried. The fries, not a bit soggy, crisp as lettuce, and the hushpuppies deserved a plate all their own. The simple, store-bought roll rounded out the meal nicely and I sipped the sweet tea as I headed back down East Blvd. One of the best chicken plates in Charlotte, made all the more desirable to those with a hunger in their bellies and a little surprise cash in their pocket.
Price's is a true staple in Charlotte and should be visited by all.
I have been several times over my 20 years in Charlotte and it does not disappoint.
