How would you rate Pican?
This place is great! I feel like I say that a lot but this is another really good spot for fried chicken. It has great ambiance, good cocktails -- perfect for a date night or just hanging with your friends at First Friday (aka Oakland's Art Murmur).
They have really good food and drinks here. If you're vegetarian, they typically do have at least a couple items on on their main menu. I really like coming here for brunch Saturday or Sunday between 10 - 2:30pm. Be warned, it can get really busy, so call or use open table and make a reservation. Entrees range from $23-$32 so if it's dinner for two with drinks, expect to pay around $100.
The shrimp and grits ap was very tasty.
The waitress kept trying to push the braised pork shank, but we went for the catfish and the fried chicken - both were fantastic.
The banana pudding was so-so

The mac and cheese and collard greens with bacon are both fantastic as well.
A dinner with good friends, we met after a long work day at 5 without a reservation. There was a total of 6 us, 4 adults plus my two girls. I guess this wasn't a problem because we were there so early and there were very few tables filled. It wasn't until close to 7:30 when the place filled up.
The theme for dinner was peaches. Drinks, dishes, and desserts. Starters seem to be more individualize dishes and not much for share, but we did share. I got the Crawfish & Mushroom étouffée, which had a very nice amount of heat. My friend got the Pan Roasted Pei Mussels, which was excellent, my favorite of all the starters, the broth was amazing. The only down side was that they didn't remove the unopened mussels. And lastly low country shrimp and grits, the grits was so creamy. One to our dishes, I got the Prather Ranch Berkshire pork chops, it was seasoned nicely and cooked just right. My friend's Buttermilk Southern Fried Chicken with a side of Goud Mac and Cheese was very good. the batter was done beautifully and mac and cheese was creamy, and the pasta was cooked just right. My other friends had the pork loin that was one of the specials. My girls has the Barbecued Atlantic Sterling Salmon that she polished the plate clean, and Southern Steak Frite. The both loved their dishes and wouldn't let me steal a bite.
On to desserts, Ginger & Vanilla roasted Peach, Summer Berry Bread Pudding and Fried Peach pie. The bread pudding wasn't that good, it was too soggy, but the other two dishes was very good.
Now the service, from the moment we sat down, Jill, gave us excellent service. You would think that server was become sparse when the crowd started filling the place up, but she continued to stop by to make sure we were happy and taking time to bring my girls stuff to do and chat with them. She was up beat and gave us good recommendations. I think this was one of the best service we got and she never ignored the kids and even gave them suggestions on their drinks.
This is a hidden gem. Seriously. Really good, fancy soul food is always an A+ in my book, and this place does fancy soul food well.
Get the fried chicken. See that blurb next to the fried chicken on the menu? The one that says "truffled honey service?" What that means is a dude will accompany your plate of steaming hot fried chicken out to the table, armed with a Winnie-The-Pooh-style honey pot. He will then drizzle honey onto your hot fried chicken, which will render the honey melty and delicious.
Then you eat that. You put that in your mouth, honey and all.
What else could anyone ask for, really? The mint juleps are also really good.

Went to Pican for dinner during restaurant week. The pre-set menu was $40 and did not sound very appealing, so we ordered off the regular menu. The fried green tomatoes and shrimp with grits - for appetizers - amazing. Beautifully presented and very flavorful.
For the main dish we split their signature dish - Fried Chicken. While the chicken was moist and tasty, it seemed to lack a spark. Regardless, we enjoyed our meal. The cocktails were just okay. The ambiance was nice & on the high-end side. Good for large groups. Definitely recommend.
I went in to Pican's two hours prior to seeing a play. That was not a good idea. Most of the servers must have called in sick that day because the service was poor. Having come from New Orleans and being a good cook myself I was not excited about the choices of items on the menu. Nevertheless the presentations were welcomed. In addition I was not surprised at the prices either. I haven't found any restaurants in Northern California reasonable either. I like the atmosphere and will take my visitors who come from Southern Cal there.
Great food, amazing drinks and the best and most knowledgeable bartenders ever. My goto night spot with friends and family.
Pican is a wonderful restaurant to wine and dine your favorite people. It's cuisine is superb! I fell in love with the pork chops, cooked to perfection. I encourage anyone who hasn't been, to try Pican.
Excellent fried chicken with mac and cheese.
Overall, an expensive and disappointing experience. I ordered the fried tomato appetizer. Yuck. Shell was like a rock - a hard, stale, greasy fail. Try cooking things up fresh, kitchen. I also had the gator gumbo ( not really gator-just the name) and it was a delicious sauce with just about NOTHING in it. Rice was cold. Good place to get an expensive drink or two, though.
I think my parents would really like it. Having roots in Virginia, this just didn't quite do it for me in the way of comfort or southern food. Great service. Indoor and outdoor seating. Good for groups.
I came in with a lot of expectations due to rave reviews from family and friends. Went in on Sunday for brunch. Lets start with the amazing parts. Decor and design of the bar was amazing. It's a beautiful place to hang out and eat. The service is amazing. Alot of the people who worked here looked like models. They had a special elegance.
So for the review on food.
The fried chicken Benedict on English muffin. Holadinase sauce was on point and the poached egg was good. However the fried chicken was only OK. I felt like the batter didn't have enough kick and flavour and I think if they used a nice flaky biscuit instead the dish would have come together better.
The fried catfish batter lacked real flavour. It was merely OK.
Grits were the star. Had a nice little spice kick and it went great with everything.
Fried green tomatoes did not disappoint. It had a great texture and the dish had a lot of flavour. Best dish I tried.
Chicken fried steak was tender but I felt like the dish was just average.
In summary, service was amazing, but most of the food disappointed me. I would give it four stars but I felt thay with the prices I paid I would have gotten much better food. Family believes I went on an off day and I should give it another shot. Ill try it again sometime.
Went here for dinner about a week ago. The bartender (and the drinks he made) were fantastic, but that's pretty much where it ended. Our waitress told us 3 times she was getting us water, but we ended up having to ask for it anyway - it came after we'd already finished the appetizer. We ordered wine at the same time as our food, but somehow it also took forever to arrive. When it did, the server simply poured it, not even bothering to pour a taste before serving. Then she left the bottle on the table with only a quarter inch of wine in it - it should have simply been emptied (easy to do with a party of 5.)
Additionally, our dirty utensils stayed with us throughout the meal - they weren't cleared between courses, and we sat with our dirty plates in front of us well after we'd all finished. It took the manager coming over (to apologize for the water/wine incident) to realize that they needed to be cleared. Finally, of the two deserts we ordered, one of them was incorrect! And this was a slow night- we were one of a handful of tables, and support staff seemed abundant.
The manager was very gracious though, and did apologize profusely for our experience, going so far as to pour us a bottle of champagne. However, when paying Pican prices, I'm really paying for the experience, aka:service. The food, while delicious, is easily found at other places for much less. I'd been wanting to go to Pican for years, but they cured me of that!
I really enjoyed the ribs here! They offer it currently as an appetizer but it could be an entree if you just add a side to it.
They have a really great bourbon selection as well!
I also had some of the scallops which were just okay. I think I would've enjoyed it more if it wasn't drenched in sauce.
The service was quick and friendly! It came out to be really pricey. I'll be back if I'm in the mood for some bourbon and ribs!!!
Outstanding food and service, nice ambiance, but a little overpriced for what you get. Still a great place to indulge every once in a while.

Great twist on southern cuisine. Flavor profile, techniques are there, and lifted to a fine dining level. Also great cocktails, and location. Great Bar scene when you want to just catch a game or hang with friends.

Excellent! Elevated southern cooking with very creative recipes and finely crafted flavors. Duck confit hash with fried, poached duck eggs and beet ketchup. Fried green tomatoes with picked plum, smoked salmon, and mascarpone. That sort of deliciousness :)
A great place for a South-inspired brunch. They put an awful lot of bacon in their blood mary, for one thing.
Always convivial staff serving Southern comfort food in woody, high-ceiling-ed old world space. I like eating in the main dining room where jazz piano is played live (and well) or at the small but well-stocked bar. Ambiance is perfect wherever you choose to sit. A world away from what many associate with the contentious, striving streets of Oakland.
The ribs are amazing! They need a more extensive menu..... there was nothing to choose from really.

They did well executing the theme of a Southern restaurant. At first approach, the restaurant reminded me of an upscale restaurant you'd find in Atlanta. However, they fell short of the upscale restaurant theme in a few areas: staff wearing sweats and visibly worn chairs. The beignets were a tad bland and needed extra rum caramel and creme to accompany them. If you're serving catfish at a southern restaurant, the fish best be well seasoned (mine was under seasoned) or accompanied by tartar sauce (which the restaurant doesn't carry); preferably both. I will say the grits (both butter and cheese) are amazing! The alcohol content of the drinks are on the low side. The open kitchen doesn't seem to be well ventilated, so you'll leave with your hair smelling like kitchen grease. I asked for medium eggs and butter grits, but I still received poached eggs and cheese grits. I don't believe they split checks for large parties and I believe they take a max of 3 credit cards per party. In short: not worth the money.
Pretty good. Went there for corporate event and for those I always feel the catering tray food is not a great representation of usual restaurant fare. But still good.

Amazing food, delightful ambiance. Ask for Edward if you can - hooked me (an out-of-towner from the South) UP. shrimp and grits, ribs and collards did not disappoint. So glad I made it out there, thanks to Joyce from Joyce Gordon Gallery for recommending it on my one day in town.

After a few times here, the food can be great or not so much. Today my husband and I came prior to dinner hours and our service was quite poor. There was no offer to refresh our drinks or another glass of wine. We were able to get service
Love the souffle - all of them. Haven't had a less than mediocre dish here. And the atmosphere is just so welcoming. The wait staff is top notch. I've been here a couple of dozen times at least and can't think of one time I left unsatisfied. It's location keeps it something of a hidden secret.

I like the whiskey selection. The bar menu always has some new items I tried the chicken tenders and fancy fish sticks made with catfish. Both good choices. James and Nick at the bar are fast and friendly. Oh if you go for lunch the burger is a must have. I wish they served it for dinner too.
It was just okay. Went here for my birthday and was disappointed in the selection of food, especially for the price. Don't think I would be back unless it was for a quick drink.
Pican is good for bougie soul food. The friend chicken and macaroni and cheese are blah! However, get the greens, cornbread and fried green tomatoes. super yummy. The atmosphere here is nice also, good for drinks.
We just had Easter Brunch there and it was delicious 😋. Definitely will try out the dinner menu..
