How would you rate Sbraga?
As good as it gets does not describe our dining experience at Sbraga.
So, my husband had made reservations for dinner using OpenTable and they were inadvertently cancelled by the restaurant. So, we called, but realized they weren't opening until 5, so I tweeted them-- the staff called back a few hours later and offered us a seat at the Chef's Counter. We were thrilled and I was impressed with how they reacted to the situation.
We arrived about 5-10 minutes early for our 8pm reservation. They offered us a seat at the bar while we waited for our seats at the Counter (There are only 6!). Our seats were ready with a minimum wait.
Service- AMAZING. Every person we encountered was courteous, well-informed, and offered exemplary service. In fact, sitting at the counter, you can tell dinner service is run like a well-orchestrated machine.
Experience- The Chef's Counter has to be the best seats in the house- I highly recommend everyone sit there if you can. Our end seats were next to the heat lamps so it started off a bit warm, but within 5 minutes I didn't notice it anymore. What I did notice was the detail that goes into each dish. PLUS, added bonus, Chef Kevin was in tonight so we got to see him in action.
Now the food- we had the spring 2014 menu with beverage pairings and were wow'ed. We are self-proclaimed foodies and Top Chef fans so we had high expectations. Sbraga exceeded them.
First course- I had the potato ceviche. It was a light and incredibly impactful in taste course that tasted like the best potato salad you ever had. My husband at the foie gras soup...OMG- it was rich and everything you think it would be, I couldn't get enough of it. There were these little crunchies in there...to die for. Plus it paired perfectly with the Gewurztraminer they paired it with.
Second Course- I had the escargot with gnocchi. The gnocchi was a little too al dente for my liking, but the overall flavor of the dish was good- once again, very rich, but since I only had a bite or two of soup, it was okay. My husband had the octopus- it was spicy with a great char. We both really enjoyed it.
Third Course- A Stand-out! My husband had the NY Strip Steak with Kale and 63 degree egg. The flavors were phenomenal-- The steak was a perfect medium rare, the kale and egg were so complimentary of each other. A true winner of a meal. But, the star was the Rigatoni with Lamb. The lamb was sprinkled over the top, almost like bacon bits, but tasted so great. I could not get enough. I was so full but wanted to finish my dish desperately.
4th Course/Dessert- We had the Coffee Cake (the coffee ice cream was delicious) and the key lime pie (perfectly tart). We didn't finish our desserts. Not because they weren't amazing but because we were so full!
This was an experience and evening fit for foodies and simply amazing. Needless to say we highly recommend Sbraga to everyone out there.
Thoughtful, creative menu. Foie gras soup very distinctive and more varied flavors than expected. Octopus (sepia) and pork amazing. Escargot was disappointing though (says was bitter and didn't make the escargot shine). Fantastic desserts. Cherries with schezuan ice cream was incredible. Balanced and flavorful. Great staff and service as well.
Great food two of us ordered three sets of pre-fixe choices to create a tasting menu. All food was excellent, foie gras soup was amazing for starter. There was a nice variety of choices for each course. Escargot was top for the second, lamb belly top for the third. Side note the waygu with poached egg is not worth the supp fee in our opinion, good but lost flavor of the steak. Overall this Top Chef contestant won our vote with great service & foo
Our entire experience at Sbraga was a home run! We dined there to celebrate our anniversary and the staff made us feel so special, best table in the house and a signed card from chef sbraga. Not to mention the food was aaaaaamazing. This place is definitely a best in Philly
Awesome! Johnson & Wales leggo
Terribly combined ingredients. Maybe I wasn't lucky but 3 of my dishes had the same creamy sauce. Delicious Foi Gras soup ruined by raw onions. Sunflower risotto's taste stolen by strong Balsamic mushrooms. Horrible grilled parsnips in Barbecue sauce with "Asian carrots". Dessert wasn't special. I expected a lot more for $55.
Comfortable upscale dining experience. Some daring and inventive dishes, some standard fare. Prepared nicely.
Stopped in for dessert and coffee 3 days ago. First time ever in this restaurant. Based on very small dessert portion, luke warm coffee, sugar cubes that don't dissolve, and a bill for $35.00 for 2, we won't be going here any time soon. Albeit a tasty dessert, and probably food tasty too from what we read, after looking around the room, we could see dinner portions were pretty small for what you pay.
Great food and drinks albeit pricy.
Very rude hostess. Bad place. She treated me and my very old & tired parents and family very rudely. This place is just out to make a quick buck off. No interest in the well-being of its guests.
I happened upon Spraga a few weeks ago and the food was awesome! The foie gras soup was so good that I can't get it off my mind. I'm so elated to find out today that this business is Black owned! I will most definitely be back!
Had a great dining experience with my wife this weekend. All coerces were excellent, great vegetarian options and spectacular host and wait staff.
Great food , service and staff. Took my girl there for her birthday and had a great time.
Had a great dinner here. Beautiful restaurant and the drinks are great. The foie gras soup is fabulous.
Was expecting much more from Sbraga.
1. Gruyere popover and foie gras soup was cold
2. Octopus was overcooked leading to a bitter aftertaste throughout the dish
Finally had dinner here last night with a couple of friends after wanting to come here for years. The four-course dinner was excellent! Each course was clearly prepared with care. I highly recommend the beef tartare as an opener! Filet mignon with mashed potatoes and oxtail was worth the up-charge as was the spaghetti with king crab. My only criticism is that I actually felt like four courses (plus an amuse bouche and popover) was a little too much and too rich. Otherwise, would highly recommend and eat here again.
Great food and atmosphere. Staff is highly professional. The food is topnotch.
Great service. Tasting menu, appropriate portions. Went as a couple tried many options, all delicious. $$$$$
Very accommodating staff. The $55 menu was a treat, very fine risotto, delicious moist octopus, if a bit over seasoned. Opt for the cheese plate for dessert.
The cocktails are all well mixed and ask your server what he/she recommends. Our said the octopus and she was so right.
Place is good, although for a large party there may not be enough room (8+) the $20 supplement for steak is worth it. You can thank may later. The soup was way too creamy and the pasta was a bit doughy tasting. The coffee is incredible and the dessert is so good and sweet
Oh, no, man, Sbraga closed before I even get the chance to finish my review.
