How would you rate Ms. Tootsies Soul Food Cafe?
A FEW WEEKS AGO I HAD THE CHANCE TO DINE AT THIS RESTAURANT. IT WAS BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS. I MYSELF BEING OF LATINA AND ITALIANA DESCENT WAS SHOCKED BY THE GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE I RECEIVED. I WAS ALITTLE NERVOUS GOING IN BECAUSE OF THE STARES I RECIEVED BEING WITH A GREAT FRIEND OF MINE WHOM WE HAVE BEEN CLOSE FOR ALMOST 25 YEARS AND HE IS BLACK. THE BARTENDER MADE ME FEEL RIGHT AT HOME AND EVEN TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY ABOUT A THING. SHE RECOMMENDED SOME TIEMS ON THE MENU BUT I CHOOSE THE COUNTRY FRIED CHICKEDN WITH OKRA AND YAMS AND MY FRIEND CHOSE THE GRITS WITH SHRIMP AND GREENS ALONG WITH MAC AND CHEESE. I WAS KNOCKED OFF MY FEET BY THE TASTE. IT WAS VERY GOOD. THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT AND THE PRICES WERE NOT BAD AT ALL. IF YOUR EVER IN TOWN STOP BY AND ENJOY. YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED YOU DID.
THANSK MS TOOTSIES
The worst service ever!!!! As a woman who works in customer service myself, I was shocked to receive the service that I did after hearing such great things about the food and restaurant itself. Their reservations that you may only make online 2 weeks in advance are useless! After following their instructions and making my online reservations exactly 2 weeks in advance, I then waited the 48 hours to get a response back with some sort of confirmation. That I never received, so I then took it upon myself to call THEM. I was told that I should be fine with it being a weekday, but then told to go online and make the reservation again "just in case". After doing so 2 more times, and never hearing back from them again, we are now down to 1 week before my supposed reservation and after being told that " we should be fine" , are now being told that we can not be accommodated. When telling the hostess what she said for the past 2 weeks, I was told that I was twisting her words. Again working in customer service, I would never handle a client that way, nor would I not find anyway to accommodate them at all as the client should never walk away upset.
With that being said, my experience was absolutely awful and we didn't even make it inside. After this I could only imagine what that service would be like, but after now reading the other reviews, I can see that it wouldn't really be a surprise.
The previous reviews have this place wrong... Ms. Tootsie's is an excellent restaurant. Great atmosphere, service, food, and drinks. I have been going to Delta's since 20011 and I love the place. My food is always hot and taste incredible. I love their mac & cheese and desserts. I live in Princeton, NJ and travel about an hour just to go there. Ms. Tootsie's in an excellent establishment.
Experience was terrible. Services was poor and food was disaster. I heard the ice tea did taste like koolaid and sugary. Shameful, the last thing we need is diabetes. The white seating had no cushion, felt like the bottomless pit. Owners need to revamp or close it down. Not worth $.
Excessive wait time even though their were empty tables, the "world famous" ice tea is nothing more than good old fashion kool-aid and Lipton tea with a pound of sugar, my food took 35 minutes to be brought out and had to be sent back because the chicken breast was dry and unseasoned. This place doesn't believe in seasoning, our party had the fish, the collard greens and the god awful mac and cheese (taste like Kraft's if you ask me) all of which lacked seasoning oh wait I did have the sweet potatoes which were seasoned with a mound of sugar. The chicken wings weren't bad but not restaurant quality, the best thing about the meal was the corn muffins and the strawberry spread...seriously. I wouldn't go back, the atmosphere and the waitress were nice (the hostess were snobby) but the food sucks point blank period.
The food was great and the music was very appropriate for soul food. The music was just a little loud and made it just a little less easy to have a conversation even in the eating area but not so loud that you'd have to yell. The wait staff was timely yet not annoing and very courteous.
Location wasn't bad for what we wanted to do. It's on south street but far enough you're not overwhelmed by the kids enjoying themselves on the lower end of the block but close enough that if you wanted to stroll down and do some shopping, that would be no problem. Street parking is limited and we paid $6 for 3hours (free after 10pm).
i wanted to like this place soooo bad. For starters we arrived on a saturday night and were told there was a 45 minute wait.. which was fine. We went to search for a parking spot and after finding one, waited in our car for about 35 minutes and then proceeded to walk back to the restaurant. (its south street so our parking spot was several blocks away) When we came back in we stood at the door waiting for the hostess to seat us. She told us that it hadn't been 45 minutes yet so it should be just a few minutes for our table. Again, totally exceptable. After about 5 minutes of waiting she comes up to us and asks "did you drive your car here?" We were confused but told her that we had. Then she proceeds to tell us to go back into our cars and wait for her to call us. Something about the owner doesnt like for guests to wait for tables inside. I could tell she felt bad though, and after seeing that I was a little annoyed she said that there was a sitting area upstairs by the bathroom and for us to just go pretend we're using the bathrooms but sit there. & if anyone asks we were just waiting to use the bathroom. We declined because we didnt want to get her in trouble.. also because who really wants to feel like they're sneaking around just to be able to sit inside while waiting for their table? So we told her it was fine & that we would go back into our cars. After walking 5 blocks in 30 degree weather. Not even 2 minutes after getting to our car we get a call from them saying that our table was ready & for us to come back.. wow. The waitress was friendly, nice vibe & the food was okay but the beginning of our visit just turned us completely off from ever wanting to come back.. maybe we'll give it another try when the weather gets a little warmer so waiting outside won't be an issue. :(
I wish I could put no stars for this place!! I wanted to like this place as well I got here at about 9:15 didn't get seated until almost 11. People were seated after me and received there food before me. Crazy part is my waiter encouraged me to complain so obviously this has been ongoing problem this place will never get my coin again
As much as I love Soul food....Ain't no way Would I Park 4 blocks away Just to eat Chicken.. count my Visit OUT..
What a disaster - so much potential but my best friend's dinner turned out to be a night of Murphy's law. I did everything by the books used the website made a reservation and spoke with someone after they called to confirm that it was her surprise birthday and half the group (8 people) were going to have dinner and another 8-10 people would join us after as long as the lounge was open. I was assured there is rooftop area with a DJ and they're accustomed to large parties everything would be taken care of and we would have a wonderful time. Now, as a native New York maybe I'm just biased/have high expectations of what upscale southern cooking should be as a frequent diner at Amy Ruth's, The Harlem Tavern, and The Red Rooster. Upon arriving I do admit 1 girl bailed last minute but we had 7 people there ready and on time that would not be seating and were stuck waiting in the small vestibule of an entrance. We asked to be seated so we could start ordering drinks (we are all in our mid 20s and were looking to spend the night out) and we would wait for another girl who could rush over sooner and meet us for dinner. We were told No couldn't be done and just they ushered us upstairs to an empty hall/room in front of the bathroom. 25 minutes later...they came up and were surprisingly nicer and ready to seat us (as we finally realized they weren't actually expecting us to show up and when we did they had to scramble which is why they wouldn't seat us earlier). So much for seating us it took 35 minutes to get water and 45 minutes to get our only drinks of the evening. As we sat there the CDs playing in a room (with lights that kept flickering and getting really bright to suddenly be very dim gave my best friend a headache as she suffers from chronic migraines) kept skipping. When I asked what time the upstairs would be open the waiter looked at me dumbfounded and said we don't have a DJ. Needless to say i had to blast text everyone else not to bother coming since there was now no point. We did have a later reservation so we were all hungry said we were ready to just order our meals after we were told cornbread would be coming out (which ended up coming out 5 minutes before the food). Apparently it takes 30-35 minutes to fry a chicken breast (really wish i were making up that we were told that). When the food finally did come it was both cold and bland and not to mention everything was breaded and fried (at some point that day because we definitely got reheated food) with the same heavy tasteless thick batter. [Side-note: I clearly told the waiter I was lactose intolerant and have a gluten allergy so I asked if the shrimp was plain on the grits and was assured they were - fast forward to me getting breaded shrimp and cheese covered "grits" no idea what those were that they served me because they were terrible - also asked for a side of green beans and ended up with collard greens I guess I'm white I wasn't supposed to know the difference.] We asked for items repeatedly hot sauce, salt, napkins, drinks, and boxes at the end of the meal and just got a consistent yeah yeah yeah and attitude from our waiter that was just the nail in the coffin for our dinner. I will say they tried to make up for the ridiculously long wait for our food by offering up free vodka shots which is nice but in the 3 hours we were there we would have much preferred to have just ordered our own drinks (with rum which is what we prefer and I can actually drink without going to the hospital). All in all is was an overpriced night for very underwhelming food and poor service. We would have all been much happier to have paid a bill 3 times the price if only we could have at least gotten another round of drinks. I wish I could offer up more constructive criticism but alas I am not in the restaurant business which is why I go out to eat and be taken care of by people who supposedly are and should know what they're doing.
The food here it's phenomenal!! I dare you to finish a full meal here (app, entree, and desert) so much food! Place is packed but you feel no rush from staff. It's possible you'll wait longer than 30 mins for a table and it's worth EVERY MINUTE
WORSE NIGHT EVER!!!
They have no respect for customers. My party of four arrived after reserving online and we're told we couldn't be accommodated because they "don't take reservations". They said we could wait for a table which we did. My husband had a cast on his leg and was on crutches at the time. We sat and our server came over almost 40mins later to ask if we wanted a drink. At the time it was getting dark outside so they were lighting the candles on the tables. The waiter tried to reach over my husband but couldn't reach the candle holder since my husbands leg was sticking out (because it's casted) so I handed it to him and he SNATCHED it out my hand. Our food came after waiting a little over an hour and the "fried chicken" was soaked in grease. The pork chops weren't done and we're bleeding. They offered us gift cards but we gave them away to someone walking up to the restaurant as we were leaving . They'll NEVER get my money again! They disgrace Philadelphia. All the tourists that patronize your business you need better staff!!!
I went there and was dissatisfied with the service with a party of four .Everyone was giving a 35 dollar gift card and urge to come back. We went back together my same party of four we ordered 149 dollars of food. We had 140 dollars in credit and was told we could not use our card for certain things afterwards. Our balance should have been 9 dollars but it was more like 60 something .Ain't nobody got time for that unprofessional people.
As a person that's always catering to customers 5 days a week..
I've always had a bad experience with the customer service at Ms.Tootsie's.
I ordered take out one night and got to my job to find out the I had to go back to get my Tilapia fish that wasn't in my container!:-(..Never mind a 10 min wait for my receipt..
First and last time visiting this restaurant. It was my sister’s graduation and we called ahead to notify the staff our party would be coming in parts. Upon arrival we were not seated because not all members of our group had arrived. While waiting they continued to seat people in front of us because they could not find enough space to accommodate six people. Not one person asked if we would like to look at a menu or order drinks while we waited. Finally about an hour and a half later a table became available only our experience was haltered even further by incompetent and poorly managed staff. Instead of busting the table that could’ve fit my family they decided to bust smaller tables surrounding the area. By the time we were seated we just wanted to place an order but our waitress had another agenda in mind. We order at last, while waiting I look up the place and see the reviews about the fried chicken from food network and am anticipating at least a good meal for my wait. HA! Food Network needs to come collect their banner from that window because this is really bad publicity for them. 85% of our meal was sent back, each and every piece of fried chicken was under cooked. Their second attempt was even worse, they cooked everything in grease that had been used to handle fish and it was disgusting. The main cook (I guess? She never identified herself) came out to apologize but at this point there was nothing to be said for the horrible evening spent there. They discounted our meal, but honestly not nearly enough. They sent my sister home with crab cakes (the appetizer size) and believed that was a good compromise for the rest of the incomplete meals had that evening. This place was so bad I would not even recommend it to my worst enemy. PS their music was almost unbearable (they were even too lazy to make a playlist)
This spot sets the bar for Classy Soul food dining and restaurants, i would definitely eat here again
Drake rapped about this place so I decided to check it out. Was not disappointed. Thanks Drake!
I will never! I called to reserve a big party for my birthday and when we arrived they told us they could not accommodate that big of a party! Way to ruin a birthday assholes
Well, someone from the restaurant called and confirmed our reservation. We get there (early) and had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation time. We go upstairs and there was a large family gathering...cool, no problem. Next thing you know it sounded like we were at a cookout! Fetty Wap on blast, kids playing and running like they were outside. It sounded like a stampede behind me. ANYWAY....the Ice tea, my fried chicken, mac & cheeze & greens WAS THE BOMB!!!! Just wish someone from management could have been there to control the situation or SEE what I saw.
Well where do I begin. Got to Ms.Tooties at 8pm didn't get seated until 10:15pm on 11/7/15. The waiting area was jammed pack so we had to wait outside in the cold. It seemed like when people were done eating they were lounging around instead of leaving. When we finally got inside they ran out of corn bread, so we were served rolls and than the waitress said they ran out of clean silverware and she gave us plastic utensils. Finally our order came out and she was able to give us regular silverware. Some of our entrees were cold and the turkey chops were very salty and full of bones. Overall the food was delicious and our waitress was great. Will I ever go back there on a Sat no.
I truly enjoy the food Ms. Tootsie's has but their wait time for a table is just too much. On two separate occasions I came here and the wait time was over half an hour. The first time I left and the second time I sat at the bar. While at the bar my girlfriend and I ordered our meals and as we were finishing up she got the text message that our table was ready. That was 35 minutes after they said the table would be ready. Perhaps when they don't have events going on they could add some additional seating on the second floor to accommodate the crowd coming in for dinner.
So in my pregnancy cravings tonight. I asked m husband to take me to Ms. Tootsies for some mac and cheese. Just the side. My husband went in the store placed the order for the Mac and Cheese and because the front line staff wereally watching Empire it took them 20-25 min to scoop a serving of mac. My husband had to remind the lady who took the order that all he ordered was Mac. She then went to the back and it was already ready.
The staff was beautiful! (Literally) inside & out! The food was delicious! Great prices! It was my birthday weekend and they made me feel so special! I can't wait to go back!
Can't figure out what all the hype was about? This food was disgusting! Macaroni taste like it had american cheese in it instead of cheddar. The chicken was undercooked and horrible! The greens were salty as hell. That so called strawberry butter was unoriginal like they took some smuckers jelly and mixed it with butter. They are way too expensive for that nasty ass food! I wish i could give it no stars never again would they get my money.
Very nice atmosphere and ambience! Open until 2 on a Friday night and was such a relief after coming from a comedy show at Liacouras. Food was delicious and loved the Mac n cheese, string beans, yams and fried whiting. Byob which is awesome! Staff was friendly.
A family member made reservations and once we got there, they claimed we never had one even tho emails and multiple phone calls were made. We ended up waiting for THREE HOURS to get seated. They never gave us any complementary drinks nor food. Barely we're given an apology. The customer service was extremely poor and the food didn't help make the situation better. The food was pretty bland. Will Not be waiting 3 he's to eat here again.
The food was delicious. The servers were really polite and attentive.
However, the price was too high at $35.00 for two pieces of fish and a mini bowl of grits. At 11 am I am not looking to drink, so the unlimited samosas was not what I was needed to fill my empty stomach!
When I asked to purchase separate bowl of grits, the server said sure, then returned 5 minutes later advising the manager said they can only sell items in the setting / packages on the menu, which was limits to three choices and one side order option to purchase eggs with home fries; therefore, unless I spend an additional $35, I could not purchase any additional food. In result I had to be happy And content with my initial limited meal!
I was sitting in the back room that had worned chairs, several crates with a stacks of kitchen towels was placed on a counter next to me.. The kitchen door was dirty, broken and often got stuck when the servers went in and out. Therefore, my view was the staff working in the kitchen. I could barely hear the deejay with the loud music playing in the kitchen.
We should get what we pay for or at least, be able to purchase additional sides.
Shame on you Tootsie for not giving your customer options or what we pay for.
If I could give this place no stars I would. I have been to Ms. Tootsies several times and each time the quality of service has gone down tremendously.
I am involved in a women's group and a lot of the women had never been to Ms. Tootsies before so we agreed to have our first meetup there - especially because of the BYOB.
I went on their website several weeks beforehand, but it CLEARLY says they do not accept reservations more than 2 weeks in advance.
I set myself a reminder and went back on the website on 4/16 and made a reservation for a party of 8 for 4/30 and thought all was well.
I realized today that I never got an email or phone confirmation and decided to email and find out what was up.
I received a call within 10 minutes of sending the email, but I was at work and could not answer. I called the number back and it was Ms. Tootsie's, but it machine said to call back during business hours - WEIRD!
I received another phone call and it was a gentleman who advised me that they were all booked and did not have any reservations due to the Penn Relays. How is that possible when I made my reservation on 4/16?! He was not very apologetic at all. It was kinda like a "oh well" situation. There was not any talk about how to resolve the issue at all. We are very disappointed, because they ruined a good time for us and is leaving us scrambling to find a new venue. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Avoid Ms. Tootsies!!!!
My friends and I waited for 2 hrs to get seated then had to wait even longer to get service during our entire dinner. The food was very good and the atmosphere is awesome, but the service was terrible.
My friends came here on a Friday night for food and lounge. We were told that there was no lounge that night it was closed. That's a bit annoying, if you are a lounge then you should be open on a Friday night. You can't pick and choose days that we want upstairs to be open. I can understand if there's a private event but this wasn't the case.
However, they had a really good DJ that night so we ordered drinks & wings at the bar while we waited for our table. The bartender had an attitude because I asked him for the blue cheese dip that he forgot. We waited about 2 hours for our table only to go around the second part of the restaurant and realized there was so many empty tables.I also didn't like that there were no speakers in the second part of the restaurant so it wasn't as lively as the main room.
We got to our table & ordered smothered turkey with a side of okra and corn, chicken & waffles, catfish with mac n cheese. The food was good but the smothered turkey was reallllllly salty. The tropical ice tea drink was good but really sweet. Our waitress was really nice despite my friend being already annoyed at the poor service from the bar.
Bottom Line: They have alot of improvements that need to be done as far as management and organization.
So, I have been wanting to go to Me. Tootsies for a while, tho I've heard mixed reviews. Tonight was my friends birthday, so we went to Ms. Tootsie. Well, to make a long story short, it was terrible. The collard greens were beyond salty, the sweet tea was too sweet, the bathrooms had no toilet paper and dirty.... overall bad experience. The food, the atmosphere, the entire experience, was less than mediocre. Folks, do not, I repeat, do not go here. It is overly expensive, and not worth the price. Do not waste your time, energy, or money on this horrible excuse for a restaurant.
Servers/ waiters were nice
The food was horrible. Tea was the tea that you mix the power mix with water . Basically the homemade ice tea from the Chinese store. It was way toooo sweet. Everything except the Mac and cheese was salty. I got fish, collard greens, yams. They out watermelon on the side of your glass and called it a tropical drink.Only reason why I didn send my food back because I was trying to support black people because of the thought times we are going through.
I have been to ms. tootsie on several occasions.. but it only takes one bad worker to ruin it for the restaurant
I called to place a To go order ... The phone was picked up by a girl name Jordan who told me to please hold ... I was place on hold for 10 mins.. All of the sudden the phone disconnects. I figured, must have been an accident . I called 13 more time until I finally just pulled up to see what in the world is going on. I pull up and the host is outside talking to a few men. I call again (While looking at her).. she answers the phone again.. I say I want to place a Togo order... she places me on hold and proceeds to talk to the men outside. Then I SEE HER pick up the phone and Deliberately HANG UP ON ME. so I get out the car .. and say I wanted to place a Togo order .. she asked for my name and I said the one you just hung up on. I called 13 times. She has the audacity to say to me .. "We'll, I've been sitting people too and the phone is not a priority".. So I said well why didn't you say I'd have to come to the actual restaurant to place an order..instead you placed me on hold 13 times or didn't answer.. She says with an attitude like i said .. taking your order over the phone is not a priority. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. .so you would think it must have been really busy in the restaurant.. there were 5 guest there.. I was furious .. I made a complaint and I'm sure nothing was done ..Then my food was not cooked right either .. and the quanity the size of an appetizer..I went back in to ask them to fix it .. but was told they couldn't.. better yet.. wouldn't . At that point I was too pissed off to even request my money back. . Then as I was making the complaint.. another server heard me.. she gets up to run and tell the field I was making the complaint on .. Gossiping.. Safe to say I will NEVER SUPPORT THIS PLACE AGAIN
I should have stopped coming when a fight broke out with one of the guest and two servers
We were practicly ignored for about 15 minutes but bartender Roc took our order he was great. Food made up for initial bad service it was delicious. Thanks Roc for saving the day
Bad service. Myself and 3 friends sat down and ordered drinks. The drinks took about 15 minutes. If that wasn't bad enough we ordered our food and the only thing that came out about 35 minutes later was the cornbread. The girl never came back to the area. Tables around us with different servers got their food and had left! We watched as 2 tables went through two sets of people. Oh yeah and the food NEVER came!
Ms. Tootsies is always a great time. the workers are friendly, but the food takes a while to come to you. I like to think they do that to give you conversation time and it is such a nice space. The inner arrangement is very important and I appreciate the way it looks and feels. The style is unique and the food is great. definitely recommend going there though the prices may vary, it is worth it to me.
No long wait i give 4 mins wait if that & Everything was so good ..food came out hot chicken was so crispy love the rice
Overall, the food here is really good. The greens were flavorful, but a little heavy on the salt this time. The cocktails were delicious! My friends and I arrived shortly after opening and were seated immediately. This was great as the restaurant does not accept same-day reservations, but will accept walk-ins.
It's a great place for some real soul food. The waitress was very friendly and pleasant as well.
Ordered pork chops was told after a 15-minute wait there are no pork chops. Had to share with my out-of-town guest Fried Chicken which was very good. Had mac&chesse and green beans which were excellent. The waitress was very poor. No refills on drinks even after I asked for plain water.
Food was great!! Waitress was great however they were limited on side dishes.
Recently visited Philly and all I heard when I asked my friends where to eat was Ms. Tootsie's! When there for brunch and expected it to be busy but the service was really fast. They seated us with no reservations within 10 or 15 minutes, they even offered to call us when a table was ready so we could enjoy the shops in the neighborhood. When we were seated we got such great service from a young lady with locs. The menu was small only 3 options but I think that made the choice easier for us. We each ordered 1 thing and decided to share. I can honestly say I have eaten everything on the Ms. Tootsie's brunch menu and loved everything!! We even ordered some to go.
The price was right and the servings were big, the host and wait staff were all prompt and helpful. I wish I would give them more stars buy unfortunately I'm limited to 5 :( .
All-Around Excellent Experience! Surely a must in the city! And they deliver through UberEATS! I will be back!👍🏾
Nice atmosphere, bathroom was dirty though and we waited FOREVER for our food. Chicken was seasoned very well and they gave us dessert for free since we waited so long for our food. Waiter was nice but I doubt I'd ever go back. Not worth that long of a wait.
Love the atmosphere and service is a plus....the food is average, a little too salty. However, their corn bread muffins with strawberry butter is THE best, very different. Drinks are good, I would go with the Ice tea.
This place gets really busy so if you're planning to go, make a reservation. The vibe is intimate and on the Saturday night I went they were playing some throwbacks R&B jams during dinner time (really set a good mood). The mac and cheese, yams and fried chicken was amazing!
Love the food ....for the most part the people are nice ....when we call for take out orders they like NEVER answer the phone ....you literally have to call like 20 times ...
This last time we placed a take out order the girl didn't ask for a number for call back nor did she give us a total ...but the food is very very good.
Great ambiance. Feels upscale and like grandmas kitchen at the same time. Good was delicious. Pricey but expected. Drinks were also good.
Went for brunch. They had bottomless mimosas on a Sunday. The food was ok but it was not hot when it arrived at my table. Service for staff was great I would definitely go back.
I want to say that I am happy some others were able to enjoy their visit to this "Cafe", but my recent patronage for my mother's birthday after nearly 4 years being here presented the same poor service & unpredictable nature of their food. We arrived at 7:26pm on a Friday to enjoy the end of happy hr as the Ms. Tootsie's website states "Friday Happy hour 5-8pm". We were quickly seated for a table of 4 since the crowd was light, and when ordering happy hr drinks we were told by the bartender herself and later our waiter that happy hour ended at 7pm. We were later served their famous corn muffins chillingly cold although our waiter told us moments before that they were in the oven. (We watched 2 other tables send theirs back as well.) We tried the wings which were surprisingly bland, and I mean the chicken and the sauce. The drinks (purple passion, tropical bliss) we were allowed to order from the happy hour menu after speaking to the manager were pretty good though.
Loved it! I went to Ms. Tootsies in January for an after party for the Jeff Bradshaw Benefit concert at TLA. The staff was great, the service on point, & the crab cakes were bangin'! I'll be back soon!
We arrived on a Sat night without a reservation. The wait wasn't too bad and the staff did their best to ensure us that they were working on getting us seated soon. The food was great and they give you large portions. The seating is a little too close together but the food and staff made up for it so would recommend and go back!!
The food is amazing, but the service is consistently mediocre. Visited today to get takeout, and even though i called in advance, I had to wait literally 20mins before the young lady doing takeout could even begin to assist me. While i was waiting for her, 4-5 other waitresses were hanging at the bar chatting, but were unable to step in on behalf of the takeout girl and help the waiting customers. The whole ordeal took so long, that I received a $76 parking ticket.
The icing on the cake was being told that the courtesy cornbread couldn't be given to me without a charge because my order consisted of two appetizers. Makes sense if i ordered something cheap like fries, but i ordered two seafood appetizers totaling $30... was extremely petty to be told I needed to pay $0.75 for normally free bread. Especially after my extended wait. If the customer service matched the food, this would be one of my favorite places. Unfortunately that's not the case.
Absolutely no customer service. I called to set a reservation and got voicemail that directed me to go online. I put a reservation for 4 in the online system and got no response. Their system doesn't even send an email to acknowledge they received the request. That was 2 days ago and still no response to let me know if my reservation was accepted.
Great food. Large portions. Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices.
Friends and I went for Sunday brunch. The restaurant opened about 10 mins later than they said, which was a full hour after what the website's posted hours were. I would call before going for confirmation. Service was slow, but that was our server's fault. Very possible she was new as people who were seated after us had food and drink within minutes. There was a DJ - he was phenomenal! Played a lot of music from the 80's and 90's and kept us dancing at the table. Food was tremendous! I had the fish and grits with a side of scrambled eggs and the bottomless Mimosa's. Delicious!! The fish was seasoned perfectly and the grits (cheese added) were smooth and creamy! Friends had chicken and waffles, and shrimp and grits - all to rave reviews! If you do Sunday brunch, get there early, as the place will fill up quickly!!
I was actually Mystery Shopping here on Sunday. Inwas disappointed with the overall experience. Lukewarm Mimosas for $20.00. No coffee even though the Manager said there was coffee. No rolls even though we had fish/shrimp and grits. I hope it is better the next visit.
Ms Tootsies was wonderful. The food was great. Great flavor and selection. I had the smothered chicken wings with mac and cheese. Excellent
There are some things you come to expect from certain restaurants such as foul customer service, bad food, bad attitudes, screwed up orders, and a lack of parking. Tootsie fits all of the above and the TO GO service and experience was a hellified nightmare. Its listed phone number went straight to an error message several times during business hours. When I finally got through the male who answered the phone was rude and irritated for having to explain menu items. Once that dramatic episode played out, he said the order, smothered pork chops & catfish dinners, would be ready in 30 minutes. No problem, right. Wrong. We arrived to find NO PARKING within several square miles. One would think that Tootsie would give customers the heads up as a courtesy and for convenience. We parked illegally, hoping to run in and out before the parking enforcer returned. Not only was the order NOT READY, it HAD NOT BEEN PLACE because that rude guy "forgot" to expedite it to the kitchen. Got back into the car and called to speak with a manager. The same rude guy at the host stand out front of the restaurant answered and said that no managers were available, "they're all busy." I explained that we were sitting in the car across from the restaurant, illegally park. He asked if he could take a message and have a manager call when one was available. Clearly this guy suffers from too much air to the brain. I got out of the car, went into the restaurant, asked for a manager, and within moments, one stepped from the kitchen. This male manager was courteous, empathetic, and very professional. But that did not make up for the inedible smothered pork chops that tasted like a pillar of salt and paste-like gravy, the too-sweet mushy yams and cornbread, food truck mash potatoes and jacked-up mac & cheese. No way in hell were we going to eat this. It ended up exactly where it belongs, IN THE HOTEL TRASH. I would not recommend Tootsie to anyone looking for QUALITY SOUL FOOD OR AN UPSCALE SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT. The Tootsie Pop candy that came with the order tasted better than the food. Not a good impression of soul food in Philly for a visitor.
I keep trying to support this locally owned black business but they make it virtually impossible. It’s like they almost find joy in saying the things that aren’t possible versus finding a solution and are not customer friendly. They don’t accept same day reservations. Understood. But either answer the phone consistently or make sure your website for reservations works. The expectation even on the website for a reservation reply is 48hrs. Honestly the food isn’t great enough to have to plan a week around eating here. Relish or Victoria’s here I come. They are much more customer focused and professional than Miss Tootsie’s.
I love the food and atmosphere at Ms Tootsie's, which is why I was interested in giving my mother a 50th Birthday get-together here. However, their reservation process is a nightmare. When calling and submitting multiple inquiries via their website for over two weeks now, I have yet to receive a response. Every time I call I receive a different response about the Event Coordinator...."submit your request online, she will get back to you within 48 hours; let me take your information and give to the coordinator, she'll get back to you tomorrow; let me take your information and give directly to Mr. Parker himself; give the coordinator a call in the morning as she will be in then." I have yet to hear from the Event Coordinator!
The food was just ok to me. The sweet potatoes or yams were soaked in a bath of syrup and were just top sweet. I've had way better yams in my life time. I also got the okra and tomatoes and corn and it was mostly just corn. Barely any okra. The catfish was actually good.
Yes, just yes. The greens, the mac and cheese, the fried chicken... everything was delicious. It's worth the wait in line, just do it.
i went to eat here like 2 days ago. every single thing i ate was amazing!. i had fried chicken basket and seafood basket. amazing!
Ms. Tootsies is always a staple for trips back home. The Turkey wings is my favorite. Great atmosphere for dates or a night out with friends. I've always had great service.
Ms. Tootsies reservation system is terrible. I scheduled an event two weeks prior to my engagement like their website stated and I got denied because they said they already had filled their seats. After talking to one of the managers on duty she stated that if I wanted my arrangement fulfilled I should of schedule before the 2 weeks mark. This has put a bad taste in my mouth for this establishment and now I have to reschedule a business engagement.
First time at Ms Toots. Food was great. We parked RIGHT IN front. Kaya was the best. Loved everything but the prices.
Great customer service beautiful dinning setting decor and comfy modern setup. Long wait time until greeted by servant.
If you want to savour a great dinner or brunch in a classy, elegant, 5 stars atmosphere (without the stiffness of formality), then this is the (only) place for you. Their wings are humongous and just as delicious either fried, bbqued, smothered, etc. The yams can't be beat. Their ribs and lamb chops will leave you wanting for more. Every corner of this place is decorated inconspicuously, no matter where you seat, you will enjoy yourself, even where you wash your hands. But their food is just great food and the servers do a great job at making us feel great every time we go. Kris is so respectful, cordial, and efficient. Good people. The Sunday brunch has a DJ included. It's like a happy yet relaxing Sunday celebration before going back to work on Monday. Any time at Ms. Tootsie' s is a great time.
I've been to several soul food restaurants in Philadelphia. I've tried Warmdaddy's and Relish but the one that has the best food is Ms Tootsie's. The catfish and the turkey chops as well as the macaroni and cheese are some of the best items on the menu. They are seriously delicious. The only item that was a disappointment was the turkey wings and that's because they were dry. However, the fried chicken is super crispy and juicy, the buffalo shrimp was amazing. I mean literally almost everything is good, now I will say the cornbread muffins and their iced tea is a bit on the sweet side so if you have to kind of stay away from sugar those items would be a problem. The only thing I don't like is that they don't take reservations so getting a table is an issue and you have to wait around a lot.
Really disappointing. Everything I ordered came out bad. The cabbage was in long strips and was crunchy and undercooked. The Mac and cheese was dry. My smothered pork chops were not smothered at all, just fried with gravy poured over them. When they asked me how my dinner was, I was honest with them. They apologized and gave us two complimentary desserts. My husband really wanted to try this place, but he didn't enjoy his meal either. We will not be returning.
Ms. Tootsie's is Dynamite!! Good portion size and party like atmosphere. It has 3 levels and all 3 fill up fast. So, reservations is a must. I'm not a fan of the unisex bathroom Or the steep steps. However, the house punch is sweet but refreshing.
This place is a nice casual place to dine. The service were great, food was good, drinks were amazing. My only thing is the jerk wings should've been cooked longer. The jerk wings were soggy. Other then that it's a nice location. B+
I was visiting Philly for weekend and Yelped some restaurants and I was happy that I chose Ms. Tootsie's. The food, service and ambience were great. I will certainly visit again. We arrived a few minutes before they opened and I am happy we did because there was a line when we arrived and a longer line as we left. Also, the age of the crowd were much younger...20's & 30's something crowd. After all, this is a restaurant and lounge .
On a Saturday (you better get here early), I took my BFF and daughter here for the first time, We waited 2 hours before finally getting our table. I've been here before to eat, so I knew it was worth the wait! They both agreed it was worth the wait, they loved the food, everything we ordered was so damn good. It was also such a coincidence that our waitress name was August, which is my youngest daughter's name😄😄 Best place to get Soul Food, good music and tasty drinks🍸🍸🍸. I ❤❤❤ Ms. Tootsie's
My first experience at this restaurant ( Ms. Tootsie ) was extremely disappointing. My fiancé and I were seated after a 30 minute wait, which we adjusted to.... but we absolutely waited from 9:02pm- 10:16 pm for a meal. Appalling! We waited so long, the candle at the table was tired....it burnt out along with the melted ice in the ice tea. While waiting disrespectfully, no acknowledgement from the server was given, she was only remembered as the girl walking pass with the 9 bob knots in her head.... we counted 18 times. Regardless if an establishment is busy, each customer should be recognized with acknowledgment and respect. After frustration, waiting and disappointment... the manager was requested by name of Leslie. Unsurprisingly , out of that 5 second discussion with her, it equaled to the horrible service from the waitress. Nothing was offered to relieve the disappointment of our first visit. When the food finally arrived at 10:20pm.... the food was respectfully returned, poor service weighed on lost appetite and any future recommendations....we left!!! The highlighted moment was the entertainment by the bus boys holding up the white pleather walls , their discussions on the latest sneakers to purchase for the next party was appreciated .... now they deserved a tip. Date of dinner was March 9, 2018.
Great place. We celebrated our daughter's 21st birthday there. Food was superb. Only down side is that you can only email for reservations and no ever responded and we were coming in from out of town. Luckily we got in and the service was excellent and they treated our daughter fantastic!
Quoted a two hour wait for a party of five , we’ve been waiting since. Wanted to try out this location due to the “reviews” but this establishment needs a BETTER system. They don’t allow reservations for parties under 8 people, but the wait system for walk-ins is RIDICULOUS.
The food andservice was great. I also had the privilege of witnessing a great act of kindness while dining. A young man was seated behind us however the staff did not realize he didn't have enough money to order anything on the menu. When asked if they had anything he could buy for $2 the waitress told him not to worry they would take care of him. Several members of the staff began to serve him the same way they served every other customer that was dining in the restaurant. When we got our check we asked our waitress August (who was great!) if we could take care of his bill and our waitress told us that his meal would be on the house. Ms Tootsie's is an exceptional establishment!!
My husband and i are from NJ. We ate there for mothers day brunch. They could not find my reservation but the guy in charge got us a table upstairs. Food was really good, we had the chicken and waffles, mac and cheese and cheese grits was delish, ambiance was nice for a date night out. Dim lights and nice R&B love music. After eating and the check came, of course we recieved two tootsie roll pops, thought that was cute. Nice to support black owned establishments. Atlanta and Philly doing their thing. We will come again!
The food was very good. The decor was modern and upscale looking. I ordered fried Whiting, and it came out hot and crispy. But no tartar sauce was offered. When I asked for it, it took forever for the waitress to come back - empty handed. She explained it had to be made fresh.....and it wasn't ready. And it never got ready. I took most of my fish to go, where I knew tartar was waiting in my fridge at home. The menu has tilapia, Whiting and catfish, as well as a seafood platter. To not be prepared for a request for tartar is puzzling.
Sheesh, where has this place been all my life? Love the atmosphere, love the service and most absolutely love love love the food. Only thing I can think of that I didn't like was the wait but the wait ended up being worth it. Think we waited for an hour, but we walked south street up n down and by the time we knew it, they were calling us.
This is my second time at Ms Tootsie's and another great experience. Very nice ambiance, it's also a romantic one but was here with my twin. I had the tilapia and it was perfect. My twin ordered the sampler and that is big enough for 2 people lol (she did not even eat a third of it and was full but she is naturally small). Overall, great restaurant, respectful staff and nice environment.
No wonder this is an award winning restaurant! From the hospitality down to the food I have no complaints! I was greeted by the owner himself and he was very warm, inviting, and professional. The food was superb and it tastes just like big mama used to make no lie there were no flaws in the food and the chef personally came out and introduced herself No other restaurant has ever done that! We felt like family! The waitress was amazing I had a large party and she got every order correct. They sang to me and I was just really thrilled. But that's not all when it was time to pack up and leave I was gifted with beautiful memorabilia from the famous Ms.Tooties I can not wait to come back my fried fish was amazing. Beautiful customer service and hospitality I recommend you grab somebody and experience the Fabulous Ms.Tootsies restaurant
It was just OK!!!! I'm from the South and the food wasn't great! The atmosphere was nice but the staff needs more training for sure! they were nice but it was obvious they need more work. The place is really small and the cornbread has a ton of sugar in it which made it taste like a cupcake. My cabbage was too spicy and my salmon had way too much sauce on it! Lots of work to be done but it has potential.
This was an amazing experience. I enjoyed the staff, they were very friendly. The ambiance was amazing and the food was great especially the sweet potato butter pound cake!!! I also enjoyed the music as well. Only waited about 30 minutes. Definitely will go back!
Hands down one of the best brunch spots I’ve been to in Philly. We had the chicken and waffles with a side of eggs and home fries. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the home fries were flavorful with a wonderful mix of herbs, the chicken crisp and moist, and the waffles light and fluffy sprinkled with strawberries and blueberries. Nia was amazing! Friendly, efficient, courteous and ever ready to answer our questions and drop excellent suggestions. Her customer service skills are definitely on point! The ambience was wonderful! This place comes highly recommended!
Was our first time. Traveled far, but was it worth the distance! I had the seafood omelet, my husband had chicken and grits. We were more than satisfied. Ate at the counter, decor was spot on, music was appropriate for dining. Pricing was good. Service was excellent. Just what we needed.
Wow.....best dinner in a while. The cornbread muffin with the strawberry honey butter is spectacular. I had the spicy crab cakes for an appetizer and they are hands down some of the best crab cakes I ever had. The main course was shrimp and grits, with black eye peas and cabbage with peppers, it was awesome. Best grits and everything had the right amount of spice. You have to try this place if you are in the area.
I've been going to Ms Tootsies for a few years now. It's a dope spot to take someone on a date. They have really intimate settings -- dim lights, nice music lightly playing, candles lit, and the vibe just screams DATE NIGHT WITH YOUR BOO THANG.
The food is always on point. Even down to their bread and butter. I believe the prices are reasonable for what you get.
This the type of food that you eat, and after you need to go take a happy because I'm full nap. Trust me.
But yeah, check it out if you haven't. Decent service, great food, chill vibes and it's located on South Street, which I'm not a fan of, but you can leave there, or before you go, walk around if the weathers permitting or visit a few shops and spots.
I'll be making a return visit soon.
Oh, and if you throw events, they host them too. They have a few floors. Since I curate events, this is always a plus so wanted to share the love.
So good! Authentic, lovely hospitality, superbly warm and tasty. Their fried chicken platters are a no brained. Lots of sides. I like the black-eyed peas and candied sweet potatoes 🍠 (“yams”) myself. They also have fried fish options and they open the meal with a delectable corn muffin served with a strawberry 🍓 butter.
The customer service is 5 stars hands down! Ms D, will have you coming back she is so sweet, I cant say enough about the staff, awesome. The food was really good,my friend had chicken and waffles OMG amazing. I will visit again and again!
I loved it!!!! Great food, great service, nice atmosphere, warm ambiance.... I'm definitely coming back!!!! I brought my Fiance for her birthday and she absolutely loved it.
I drove all the way from Virginia for the craving of Ms. Tootsies! The atmosphere was very pleasant. Our server was very nice, a woman who I believe to be a kitchen manager or cook (due to her black uniform) came to make sure everything was to our liking. Everything was seasoned to perfection! Be Back Soon!
Food was excellent and our server Devon was the absolute best. The wait time was maybe 10 minutes and everyone from Kevin to the food runner was extremely friendly. Definitely going back again.
It was worth the 2years it took to get a reservation. The owner was a true man of his word and treated up like celebrities. The food was great, music was on point and they even surprised us with an anniversary cake. We had the best anniversary thanks to Ms Tooties. thanks you again for your hospitality.
First, let me start off saying that me and a couple of my friends were hungry on a late Friday night and when i say late I mean 1:30 am. I called before arriving to ask if the kitchen was open and the woman on the phone kindly told me it was. (Her restaurant closes at 2 am on Fridays) When I arrived I was greeted by a friendly greeter who kindly sat us down. As we were walking to our table we were surrounded by a very beautiful modern and futuristic decor. The waiter was amazingly kind even though it was 1:30 am and it was close to closing time. The customer service was remarkable. We didnt feel rushed and the staff didnt rush us out even though it was about 2 am. The food came out fast, hot, and full of flavor. I specifically ordered the catfish tenders and fries. The food was spiced to perfection! This being my first time coming to Ms Tootsie's I could tell that every thing that comes to the table they put 110%. So many details! The water came with watermelon on the glass and we were given corn-muffins while we waited for our food, they even played music! Overall, I had an amazing experience I would recommend Ms Tootsie's to everyone. Ms Tootsie is definitely my new favorite food spot in Philly! Thank you for being so kind. You'll definitely be seeing more of me at any time of the day! See you soon!
I came in to a great place by chance. Warm relaxing atmosphere with soft jazz and r&b music. Customer service was amazing. I had the grilled salmon with whipped yams and Mac and cheese. The salmon was very juicy and yams flavorful and Mac was very cheesy.
Price was very fair. Definitely great place for important events. Will be going more often.
The best SOUL Food place ever!!! The ambiance of the love lounge made our date night special.I The food was Excellent, the serving portions were huge. The staff was pleasant and polite...
Some of my coworkers and I stopped on to celebrate my birthday.A bit crowded, but not a long wait for our meals,The service was excellent, food was great , I had Shrimp and grits, spicy crabcakes with fries, and a side of mash potatoes and baked mac, cornbread muffins, and iced tea. I know it was a little heavy on the starch side ,but it was what I wanted. The staff even came out and sang Happy birthday. I wasn't even going to go,I am glad that I did,and we definitely will be back. Thanks to Keven Parker and the staff of Mrs.Tootsies Soul food restaurant for your hospitality and service.
I really enjoyed this place. The food was delicious the service was fantastic.
The appetizer was a platter that was so large we thought we wouldn't have been able to eat the entree.
I had the turkey with yams and mashed potatoes as the entree and it was delectable. In all honesty this was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. I would wholeheartedly recommend that you give this place a try, it's totally worth it!
Found this place thanks to Best Thing I Ever Ate. The atmosphere is amazing. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Since we came here during Sunday brunch, there is a bit of a wait for the food, but it is worth it. Also the music selection is outstanding.
People were great However food was extremely salty not many options unless u like everything Deep fried and covered in gravy. Wouldn't Recommend for those who like healthy options. But it is a soul food place
Business operations needs work, put in a request for reservations. Two weeks in advance , to be told my party could not reserved although it was under their 8 maximum policy I even tried to restructure my reservation requesting a smaller party size or even a different day and was given very short little feed back. For a small business, as a business owner my self I'd expect a better communication in seek of growing business or a customer. Will not be booking in the future. Reserved at Warm Daddys they took my reservation right away and accommodated me for my party size coming from NY
We enjoyed ourselves. The food was amazing. The waiters sang Happy Birthday to my sister and that was exciting. The decor has changed over the years for the better. Thanks Mr. Parker for accommodating our party of 7.
Well, I was really excited to go here. Unfortunately after making a reservation almost 2 weeks ago, we still weren't able to eat. The reason why? We made the reservation for 11 am, and it was approved. We go to the restaurant and we see the sign seeing that it's closed until noon. We saw a few of the employees there, not one person apologized for the mistake. A manager(?) came along and told us that she called and left a voicemail for us. Nothing, not one call, message or apology from anyone. We were told to go to Starbucks and wait for an hour if we wanted to go. It's 30 degrees outside and they wouldn't let us stay inside nor offer to make a coffee. There were plenty of opportunities to rectify this situation, but it did not happen. Extremely disappointed. Went to Morning Glory instead.
We ordered the sampler and the catfish with collard greens and yams. The food was flavorful and the drinks were refreshing! There is a bar and a dining room on the first floor. Ms. Tootsie's has a feel good vibe!
Great staff. Especially the hostess onSunday. She made sure they did something spacial for my birthday and really made me smile. The crab cake, scramble eggs and grits combo was amazing .
The food and the atmosphere was amazing, the service was great. The food was delicious and more than enough. I ended up not being able to finish it all. The cornbread was soft and moist. They use a unique strawberry butter ... Yes !!
If you have allergies please inform your waitress.. my wife has a strawberry allergy and thank God we let her know .. or it could have been bad. Maybe they should add that info to their menu.
Besides that I had a great time. The music was awesome, old and new R&B. I'll be back !
Service is spot on, very attentive. The food was excellent. I recommend the catfish or salmon. Very well prepared and the and the decor of this establishment really does it's justice. I will definitely return and recommend to any and everyone. Really worth the costs.
In from Cleveland for the weekend and came across this fantastic, charming gem of upscale southern soul food in the heart of the Philly Arts district. From just the start, with delicious tropical sweet tea garnished fresh watermelon, our tastebuds were treated to culinary expertise. The cornbread itself was exquisite. Adding Ms. Tootsie’s homemade strawberry butter took it over the top. One of the favorite dishes is the fried chicken wings and waffles. It lives up to the hype. The waffles were good, but the wings were sublime. The whole experience was great, including a very attentive staff. Bring your appetite and be ready to be wowed. Can’t wait to come back to Philly to see Ms. Tootsie’s again.
Wonderful place to eat as a couple or group!!
This was my first time, and i loved it!! The food was excellent.
Make sure you make reservations, its a popular place. On Saturdays, put in your name, and take a little stroll. They'll give you a call when your table is up.
The food was awesome! The service was great and the all around vibe was fantastic. It has been a long time since I have been here and the changes in decor were very nice. It is great to see a great establishment grow. Keep on growing all.
This restaurant is EVERYTHING!!!! The staff was so friendly, the food.....DELICIOUS, the atmosphere...Dope! My husband and I try to make date nights happen often and this is definitely added to our regular new spots!! Kareem was our waiter. He was everything you hope for in a waiter, friendly, sweet, great conversation and attentive. Trust when I tell you this place is THE place for soul food in Philly. No comparison. Oh and the portions are huge so be prepared to take some home!!! The tropics tea, DONT FORGET TO GET THE TROPICAL TEA!!! I could write about everything we ate but it was so good we just want to take a nap so hope y’all give it a try. We are picky so trust me when I tell you, We promise you Ms Tootsies will meet ALL your expectations! Have a blessed day!
Great service, the staff was attentive and the food had a fantastic homemade taste and feel to it. The restaurant was large enough to give everyone space, yet cozy and intimate enough to still have an engaging conversation.
I had a piece of frosted pound cake that had threw perfect balance of flavor and moistness. Wish I tried it before I got back to my hotel room, I would have ordered another slice.
Very quaint, establishment. Cool ambience. N the food?!?!...... heavenly. I had the glazed salmon with collard greens and mac n cheese. My friend had the smothered chicken with yams and rice and gravy. Everything was great. I dont think you could go wrong with any of the menu choices!!!
The atmosphere is really nice. Clean eating area. The food I'd give it a 4 out of 5 my mac and cheese had a large piece of burnt siding hidden under the rest and I was disappointed with that. But all in all it was good. It's a nice place to go on a date and vibe with someone. The waiter we had was very good. So if you in the philly area hit up Ms. Tootsies❤
This restaurant had everything. Great food, large portions, wonderful staff, cool modern atmosphere, and a bomb playlist! Highly recommend this spot for couples or groups. The eggs were soft and fluffy. The chicken was very well seasoned and not over seasoned. The greens were delicious! The waffles were very solid.
the food was excellent. On Sunday they have a perfect mix of breakfast lunch and brunch options. the atmosphere was beautiful as the restaurant is in an old mansion. parking was a bit tricky and from stepping in the door to the time food reached our lips was about an hour wait. the food options will please even the most pickiest eater. I loved the music.
I visited Ms Tooties for the first time for a late lunch early dinner and I was pleasantly pleased with the food but most importantly the service. The host was quick to greet me and get me seated. My server Devon was awesome, he gave suggestions and made sure I was enjoying my meal. I will definitely be back!
The food was alright, I didn’t LOVE my fried chicken but it was good.
The grits were tasty and the cornbread with the strawberry jam was a nice touch.
The music was great and i enjoyed being amongst the culture
I was searching for a good would good spot and the doorman at my Airbnb recommended Ms Tootsie’s! I’m so glad he did because the food was so darn good. I Had the shrimp and grits which came in a cute cocktail cup, the salmon with asparagus and mash potatoes as well as one of their tropical drinks. I forgot the name but it was non alcoholic, and came with a piece of watermelon. Even though the wait was pretty long And I did not fully enjoy the consistency of the mash potatoes I’m giving the place 5 stars because the the service, ambience and food for the most part was amazing. The waitress also caught me outside to give me my phone that I left. I am so appreciative of her!! I truly recommend 💛
As a Southern man, Tootsie's soul food touched my soul. The portions are huge; an appetizer can easily count as an entree. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy and the seasoning on the shrimp was right on the money. It's highly recommended that you make a reservation beforehand.
We was excited to taste their food because, We heard good things about this place. Ms tootsie’s staff were so polite and went above and beyond. The food was beyond good... The portions are a nice size. Everything is so well seasoned. I will be going back. :-)
In town for one night and decided to stop by this restaurant, since it was highly recommended. When we walked in, the hostess said it would be a 30 minute wait, and we could wait by the bar until they called my name, cool. As we walk to the bar that was basically empty, we were about to just order food at the bar until the bartender was rude. Never got her name, but she wore glasses and had twists in her head. She acted like she really didn’t want to even serve us, and the confirmation was when she shouted “I don’t feel like being here and I’m ready to go”, while she proceeds to pick up her cellphone and scroll like there’s no customers (i.e. us) waiting for a menu. So we decided to just wait to get a table. After about 15 minutes we were finally seated, and our waitress was Heavenly. Heavenly basically eased the tension because she was very sweet and attentive. I ordered the “famous” sweet tea and smothered pork chops, while my friend ordered the fried chicken wings. The sweet tea was SWEET, but it was good. However, I can’t give you a review on the food because we never got it. After about 15 minutes of putting in our order, Heavenly came and told us they had just put more cornbread in the oven and it would be about 20 minutes. After about another 20 (still with no food) she came and told us it’ll be about 5 more minutes ( mind you we were thinking this was for the food , and not the cornbread). The cornbread finally comes and it was good. Maybe 10-15 minutes later, Heavenly tells me “unfortunately they dropped one of your pork chops on the floor and they have to cook some more” 🙃 so after damn near an hour of waiting and it’s now 10:15pm we decided to just leave and not wait another 20-30 minutes for another mishap. Thank you Heavenly for your professionalism, but this place as a whole really needs to do better, and you probably need to start with hiring a bartender that actually wants to work her shift.
I visited Ms. Tootsie's during a weekend trip to Philly and loved it! The crab cakes, turkey wings, and drinks were amazing! As well as the customer service. Our party was seated immediately; however, it did take a long time for the food to come, but it was still hot.
The food was delicious although they were out of the potato salad and one of the yam dishes. The corn bread was not ready and there would have been a 10 minute wait after we finished our meal. They did offer so that we could take it with us. The restaurant opened late and staff arrived as customers were waiting to enter the restaurant. Staff were still setting up as customers were being seated . The music was too loud and not appropriate for all audiences.
First timer...Everything was great. Polite pass on the macaroni balls. Loved the mini crab cakes. Portions were huge! Three people shared the appetizer tray and by the time our dinner arrived, we were stuffed! Going back soon.
Tootsie get packed fast, I recommend to come earlier in the evening. The food size is worth the price. A downside is when restaurants run out of certain sides knowing they are popular, they should know that people love candied yams. The servers wearing all black except their sneakers looks tacky.
This place is a disaster. I've been frequenting Ms Tootsies off and on since the mid 2000's. The problem here is they change their recipes too much. One week the fried chicken is amazing, the next week it's terrible. One week the fried whiting is amazing, the next week it's mediocre. One week the turkey wings are to die for, the next week, you would even feed them to your dog.
The most recent meal I got from them was Turkey wings, rice, and Mac n cheese. The turkey wings were downright TERRIBLE. Very bland tasting. The rice and gravy was watery and not flavorful as well as the veggies. The Mac n cheese was also terrible.
I'm done with Ms Tootsies. The irony here is that the Ms Tootsies in the Reading terminal is a 5 star restaurant! Their food is always always always amazing! But the restaurant on South St is garbage
We had an excellent dinner here at tootsies. Our waitress Heavenly , be was exceptional. She gets our approval for being the best.
I can't say enough about Me. Tootsie's Soul Food. The food was great and plentiful. The fried chicken wings were crispy, juicy, and seasoned just right. I'll dine there again the next time I'm in Philly!
Loved this place, reservations must be made in advance via email only. The food was fresh and good. We tried the appetizer sampler to which we added the crab cakes. You must try the sampler!!!! The mac and cheese balls were one of my favorites in addition to the fish which was seasoned perfectly and lightly battered. For Entrees we ordered chicken and waffles, which we wound up taking home because we were already stuffed from the appetizers. There is a bar available and a parking lot on the same street a block away. We went on a Sunday therefore parking only cost $12 for the day. There was also on the street parking meters with a 2 hour limit.
The only reason I didn't give Ms. Tootsies 5 stars was because of the Service. Instead of our waitress being more attentive to our needs we always had to look for her. However, she was very nice.
Try Ms Tootsies, you won't be disappointed!!!
Visited Ms. Tootsie many times, even before the renovation and expansion. Food is good most of the time. Sometimes it can be a little off. Service is always excellent, staff is always friendly and customer service oriented. Brought my whole family recently and the chef came out to greet us asking us how the food was. We told her it was excellent, because it was. If you eat soul food you will like this. Even better than Sylvia's in New York.
This was the second time I’ve been to Ms Tootsie’s, but the first time I have been for brunch. The food was good per usual, we even had the crab Mac and cheese balls as a starter (due to the way our hunger was set up...they never got a photo lol). The only reason I give them 3 starts is because we had to wait an hour to be seated, which I understand on a Sunday afternoon lines brunch is in high demand, but we had to check to see if a seat was open after an hour....they never called us as they said they would. Other than that.....food was amazing!
My husband and I had made a pre-order of Mac& Cheese and Cabbage on 2/1/2020 for catering a bereaved family. When we arrived home I was not happy at all with my order and called the Restaurant immediately. I spoke to an employee named “Shay” who was very kind, apologetic and who went out of her way to replace our items with absolute perfection with a presentation that looked simply beautiful. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such great customer service and service recovery. My faith has been restored.
OMG! I highly recommend Ms. Tootsie's soul food. It is a culinary adventure. The food, the vibe, the drinks all come together to create an excellent dining experience. As you enter the place you are welcomed by a magnificent host. Whether sitting at a table or bar you have a wonderful view of the place. There are pictures displayed on the walls, music in the background played by a DJ not loud and overpowering and the food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. The chef was approachable and friendly. The breakfast buffet on Sunday was superb. My only complaint is that they are not national.
In luv...l live in Delaware drove there for date night...very popular place we love everything about it...our wait was short..after being told it would be 45 minutes. The owner had us seated in less than 15...food....yummy...yummy
Ms. Tootsie is a soul food place with a beautiful atmosphere. There's always a wait but it's great for date nights and casual outings.
