How would you rate Max's Steaks?
The biggest and best tasting chicken cheesesteak in Philly Hands Down. Will definately come back the next time I'm in Philly.
You want a true Philly Cheesesteak..Max's is the way
In philly you have to go here!!!!!
Spent Memorial day weekend 2015 in N. Philly. Cousins took me to Maxs. for the Italian Hoagie.. Hands down, the best I have had since I was a kid coming to Philly... Authentic taste.. Huge Quality Subs.. Don't break your pocket either.. Way to go Maxs.. Go big or Go home.
Great. Went to philly to visit amtrak accident victim. Asked a local boy for the best cheese steaks and he was right to point me to Max's.
Yes! The best steaks and Hoagie in philly!
Best cheese steaks in Philly!
Honestly You forget that you was on the longest line EVER for a Philly CheeseSteak, once you taste it!! This is real Philadelphia CheeseSteaks' without the bright lights but with ALL the Taste. #TheChampOfCheeseSteaksIsHere🏆
Best Philly cheese steak I've had.. Been to a few others but by far Max's has been a cut above the rest. The line could be a little long but trust me it's worth the wait..
I was a hardcore fan. But there appears to have been a change of personnel and the quality has gone down. They put less meat on their sandwiches and the cooks are a lot slower and less organized. They have a policy of not writing down orders which means they screw up orders repeatedly. I am looking for a new cheesesteak spot because I have been sorely disappointed
Everyone talks about Geno's & Pat's all the time but the REAL Gem of philly steaks is at Max's. By far the best Hoagie's & Cheesesteaks in all of Philadelphia. Each time I visit from Las Vegas, Max's is a mandatory stop... Don't buy in to the HYPE of the other 2 joints.
Best hoagie in Philly...Just tell them how you want it and the rest is delicious memories...Luv thaaat!
Ok so i heard da BEEF about best cheesesteak in philly. ..loved there for a little less than a year and in my 250 days or so i tried 100 places...this is in da spot!!!! If your soft or a scary cat.... not for you!!!! N.philly ...not for the faint hearted!!!!
Don't go. Don't even waste your time. They fell off completely. The hospitality is horrible and the wait isn't even worth it. There's a guy who cooks the food and a guy for prepared it for you. The guy that cooks the food takes out the trash as well. (Who knows if he wastes his hands when he returns.) The guy that prepares the food is a complete jerk. He feels like he has the power to say anything and make you feel like you need their food or something. His attitude makes you want to walk out without the food. Not to mention that I tried to order a bottle from the back of the bar and they didn't even know the price of their own product. This is the last time they will see me up in there. I will tell all my friends not to support this scary/hood/poor/unclean environment! I got a better sub from WAWA the next day!
A legit place for true philly sammich
yeah i ate from there in the past but...it's not clean nor safe & the owner & manager are crooked. the more you learn, the more you know. They have judges & lawyers in their pockets sending our black men to prison but yet our ppl buying their sandwiches. Google shootings at Eagle Bar. Cops been trying to shut that place down for years! Knowledge is power!
On march 5 2016 at 1150pm my wife wanted to go get a steak from Max's for the first time. So i went inside and notice it was crowded. There were at least 20 people in front of me. So i stood in line and waited. While i was in line i seen a few times people was coming out of know where and say something to the cooks or the cashier and next thing i know they are at the cash register cashing out and leaving with at steak. Meanwhile the line was going real slow. So as i was coming around the line to order my steak. The cook ask me what i wanted so i told him. He says my is number 4. Next thing i know i seen two guys come out of nowhere and told the cook i need seven steaks. So they stop fixing my order and the three people in front of me order. To get these guys there steaks. So they hold up our order for 15 minutes. To get these guys that came out of nowhere there food. It was at least 6 people who did that. So i started to get pissed i wanted to leave but i knew my wife was hungry and it was late. The time i cashed out it was 1250am. The lady that cash me out ask me how was the service. So i told her that it was bad business that yall let these people bussed in line like that and yall let that happen. She says im the wrong person to talk too. Then i told her about the last two guys that ordered the seven steaks. She going to say with a straight face that was her nephew's. Im looking at her thats the best answer you can give. Like that was right. Well im not coming there again.
Best cheese-steaks in Philly hands down. The customer service can do much better since it can be inconsistent from time to time. The area isn't the nicest either, so I expect they have to develop tough skin with some of the patrons, but being consistently nicer to customers is key for this place to be better than what it is today.
My daughter raved about the steaks from this place, she finally dragged me over there and thank god she was paying and driving because i will never ever go there by my own choosing...the worst cheesesteak i ever had, good thing its connected to a bar.
The best cheese steak I've ever had. It has ruined all others for me. Looking forward to my next visit.
MAN THIS IS SO WORTH UR $$$$,I CAME TO PHILLY LAST YEAR AND TRIED GENO'S AND I WAS VERRRRYYYY DISAPPOINTED BT I JUS TRIED MAX'S WIT MY FRIENDS/COWORKERS AND WE R SO HAPPY AND GRATEFUL THAT WE CHOSE THIS INSTEAD,SO THANK U MAX'S FOR THIS GREAT EXPERIENCE.PHILLY WE WILL B BACK!!!! 👌👌👌👍👍👍👍
Cheese Steaks & Hoagies were ALLLL of that when I last ate there 15 years ago.....I didn't give it 5 stars because of the ATTITUDE of the cooks & cashiers I feel like someone else who made an earlier comment about them letting their friends bust in front of you!!! (we stop going there because of this) That line be OUT the DOOR!!!!
There's a reason why I avoided this place. I finally goes back here after a couple years. The little ole head that makes the steak meat talks over the food, takes out the trash, and I caught him digging in his ear. Then the other Bul that actually prepares your sandwich has a big attitude problem like people have to kiss his ass for some unflavored cheeeateaks. Couple of people in line including myself wanted steaks with wiz. He gonna say cheese wiz is for white people and slams the can of wiz with actually two white people in front of him. I wanted to put hands on Bul he came real close. And the owner wonders why he don't get the same business as pats and Geno's. People want a pleasant experience not some ghetto hood crap with ockee buls all over the place trying to sell you something. Will never come back plus they dirty anyhow.
We like to come to Philly to try different cheesesteak places. Max's by far has the BEST Cheesesteaks we have ever had!!! The Cheesesteak is HUGE!!! made how you wanted it, the Meat was some of the best we have had in a cheesesteak., The staff was friendly made the time enjoyable. We will be back for sure!!!
Came all the way from norfolk va....this place is so so so f***ing good...it was a long wait but well worth it.... The bar thats attached was great!!!! Everyone should eat here atleast once in there life....
A friend of mine from Philly recommend this place as the second best cheese steaks in Philly, considering her recommendation for number one was amazing, I figured I'd try it! Plus the place was featured in Creed, so two reasons to go! Once again, she was right, these are amazing cheese steaks and subs!
It has its own free parking lot, which is a big plus and inside dining in the bar attached bar. And having an attached bar, they sell beer.
The food was made fresh, as it took a while to come out. Based on the big chicken steak sign, we ordered one cheese steak and one chicken cheese steak, plus a ham sub for the kids.
Everything came out very hot and the subs were pulled high with meat! This was some flavorful steak, sirkoin per the sign behind the counter. It was nice and most without being too greasy. There chicken steak was also nice and most, and over packed with flavorful chicken. The kids could cut ham cub had some great tasting ham. I don't know what type they use, but it was so good that it almost overshadowed the chase steak sub;
Overall I will concur with my friend that this is the second best cheese steaks in Philly. I say second because there needed to be either a little bit cheese or better distributed in the sub to the amount of meat. It's not even that they skimped on cheese, they just stuffed it with meat! Next time I might eat some with a fork first to get the distribution better per bite.
But if you are birth if the city, this is the place to go!
The best, heartiest cheese steaks in Philadelphia. No place compares. Their pizza steak truly is worth the trip itself. Tough, but SAFE environment. Assert yourself, make your order and you'll be fine. Staff jokes around but are never disrespectful or out of line. And are VERY clean with cooking surface and utensils. Good place to visit the "other" Philadelphia.
Max's food is very good! My only complaint is that I had to wait well over an hour just to place my order, but I guess that's what happens because everybody seems to love this spot. I would definitely come visit again!
Came from SC to visit family and we went to Geno's. Their cheese streaks at Geno's have no flavor so my family from Philly was like no go to Max's they are the best. Man it was late at night and I got me a half cheese steak and I swear that was the best cheese steak I've had In my life. Even my entire family that came enjoyed it. Definitely is my spot from now on!!! Highly recommended
Great Authentic "Philly Cheesesteak " there maybe a wait BUT it is Worth it! This place is a "Cash Only" & there is an ATM machine for your convenience!! I HIGHLY recommend this Philly Cheesesteak House when ur in Philadelphia! The Cheesesteak is Great and the Bread is amazing! Make Your Way Here ASAP!I wouldn't listen to the SENSITIVE idiots who write about "how their feelings were hurt"!It's about the "Taste"of the Cheesesteak & this Place is a Winner!
I went there a few times and my steak was good, but this last time , 🙄the staff was rude, the cooks were dirty , eating over the food, touching the raw steak , bringing supplies out the fridge, raw steak frying next to the pile of onions. He never change his gloves., 😐
The manager needs to get with the program. The slicer area was dirty. 😳They make good steaks , but the food handlers are the worst, no safe food ethics from any of the staff but the Muslim lady. They take the trash out without changing gloves. I was disappointed!!!!!😒
They need to tidy up on their cleanliness!!!!!!!!!!😒😐😒
The way they handle food is terrible!!!!🙄 and sad!!!!!
I was good this last time, didn't buy nothing. I was afraid of getting sick from poor hygienic habits.
Always great steaks. They make travel steaks for you if you want to take them on the plane. They put the steak on paper between the bread so it doesn't mess up your sandwich while you're traveling. Best steaks in philly
We stopped here on our way from NYC to Baltimore specifically cuz they were featured in the movie Creed. Glad we did. Their sandwhiches are gargantuan and SOoo good! Good pricing and evening better staff and vibe. We'll be back!
I came from DC to get a cheesesteak at 10am & they weren't open yet. A guy came outside stating he was the only one here & I asked if everyone else was late & he said we don't open til 11am. I told him that online it says 10am & he said "I know what online says". It doesn't take much to edit the online info. Customers were walking up from all directions. This is bad customer service to have people drive/walk to a place knowing that the online information is wrong. Service needs an upgrade.
I love the food. But a wait on a crowded day os emough to make you not return for months
It's goes without saying!!!!!!!
Can. You say Best in Philly
When it comes down to
I recommend everyone
Try one and I bet that,
They won't go anywhere else.
Max's for a steak or hoagie. I'm not going to ever treat myself to a steakhouse sandwich from anywhere else . Much Love to all the employee's
That help make it happen there.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Max's Steaks! WOW! Bomb Philly Chease Steak Sandwich! All the way from San Diego and just had to check this place out. I was not disapointed.
I've been to several cheese steak places around Philly. This is by far my favorite. They season the meat perfectly and the rolls are so fresh. The neighborhood is extremely sketchy looking but I felt perfectly safe. People on the street say hello and are very friendly. This place is a neighborhood institution.
Premium cheese steaks. Max has always be a friendly we'll organized place to get a great sandwich and a drink in their attached tavern. They treat you like your a regular customer!!!
Best and Largest cheese steaks in the city of Philadelphia! It's worth the wait... Everytime I visit someone is visiting from out of town!
Issa must try...
The cheesesteak was out of this world, but the line lasted over an hour. I guess I'm not taking away any stars because I knew right up front how long I'd be on that line, and I chose to wait. The one guy that got frustrated and hopped off the line when I first got on appeared an hour later because he changed his mind and absolutely needed to eat that steak, so I guess even the impatient follow the pied piper's call.
Dirty Grill I seen a roach crawling on the back of the grill. Never ate out of here again. Plus the store should have been remodeled considering all the money it has made over the years. No where to sit besides a dirty ran down bar in the back called eagles.
This is more like 10 stars, I'll tell you why. I'm prior service and and a vet. I decided to stop by here on Memorial Day to see what's the hype about and because it was featured in the Movie Creed with Sylvester Stallone. Trust me it's worth standing in line and waiting. The beef tastes better than the other two famous places here which are Genos and Pats. It's costs less, it's bigger, tastes better, and I'll never go to any other place again. I'll even drive the hour or so from Jersey just when I want a Philly Cheese steak. I wish I could meet the owner to personally thank them for being the best. You are truly number 1 after trying out the rest.
Btw try and go as a group the place can be a bit intimidating especially with the bar next door. Go in the day time
Oh my gosh!! My favorite sandwich is a Philly and this place delivers!!!! Homemade and the best!!! Even ate it cold! Lol
The best Philadelphia Cheese Steak sandwich I have ever eat! Highly recommend.
The line is long but it's worth the wait. It is very good. The prices are great and the size is perfect. The half look like a footlong and the footlong look like a double foot. It's in the hood on the north side (German town) but that's where you get the good food so don't be scared too get it. You won't regret it. Promise!!
Great cheese steak! Horrible customer service. One worker had an attitude because he was at work. Another worker had an attitude when I asked to add mushrooms. And the other workers stood around chatting with each other. The line was down the block and over 90° outside. Horrible customer service!
Everytime I visit family in Jersey, Philly or N.Y. i stop here to get a cheese Steak....hands down the best in
n Philly...long as a grown man's arm and full of sirloin
Finally I find a really good Philly cheese steak sub! This place is really packed and always have a long line for a good reason. Way better than the places in South Philly. The topping is on spot with their sauces and everything. Really enjoyable meal. The whole sun is really huge so it's best to split half with someone else or save the other half for later! This place accepts CASH only!!!!
Best cheese steaks every. Staff is friendly and there is a bar next door with good music. Would Recommend any one to go here if they are looking for a official cheese steak. The wait time could be a lot shorter though.
There steaks are bomb, one of the best places to go in Philly for a cheesesteak! I gave it 3-stars because the older guy who makes the steak is very rude. This is my third time going to Max's, and 2/3 visits he has been unprofessional.
From the bustling streets of north philly at the intersection of im hungry to trying new endeavours. This is the DIVE we came across. quite frankly this establishment doesn't need the bells and whistles the others have. But along the same line Maxes haves a cult following just as diverse!!! Also a personal note. I love when people use Gloves making food. Maxes = next to none
Steak was really good; very fresh meat. However the neighborhood is kinda rough. The man fixing it seemed a little frustrated with me because I asked for it a specific way. But I'd go back
Mac's is the best cheese steak in Philly. You will not be hungry. The service is not the fastest but it is worth the wait. If you go to philly go to Mac's trust me.
If you want the best cheese steak or chicken cheese steak, don't bother with Pat's or any other place in Philly. Go to Max's!! You know the cheese steak spot that appears in the movie Creed! Yup! It's not located in a place a visitor would visit..don't be scared and take yourself to Broad and Erie!! You won't regret it at all.
Wow! I can’t say enough great things about this place. It was my first real Philly cheesesteak, my Uber driver recommended it to me. I wish I could describe how delicious it was. The staff was extremely nice, helpful and patient with me, especially the cute girl with freckles. Thanks Max’s! I’ll be sure to drop by next time I’m in Philly
Oh my goodness. That's some good cheese steak. And huge.
Great atmosphere, well they are a hometown icon...
Featured in some movies, Max's steaks is a rememberable experience and is home to one of the best cheese steaks in all of Philadelphia. Friendly staff, great food, and red lit bar is an experience I show to all my who come to see the city. Personal second best cheese steak of Philly (but almost a tie with first)
Probably the best sandwich I've ever had. No joke. The only reason I didn't rate it five stars is because of the wait. I stood in line for an hour forty-five minutes. I'm not exaggerating. I'm told that's typical for the weekend. but it's not nearly that long at other times. The "half"costs about $9 and is about a foot long. The whole is double that in size and almost in price. I heard some say they weren't going to get it with ketchup. GET IT WITH KETCHUP. I asked for whatever was most popular and it was fantastic. It starts with mayo, grilled onions, American cheese, then, after the meat (oooh, the meat!), they added ketchup, salt, sweet peppers, spicy peppers, and pickles. I think that's it.
Max's is one of the most popular original cheesteaks places in Philadelphia.
The wait time in line is really worth the wait.
People come from all over to get a steak from here. I absolutely love it.
This was THE WORSE cheese steak I've had in years and I live in Philly. The service was rude and the wait was long although it wasn't crowded. The guys making steaks were more concerned with telling each other personal stories than making clean food or listening to the actual order to get it right. They messed up both of our steaks and my girlfriend ended up throwing hers away... Never again.
Best authentic Philly cheesesteaks.. worth the 2 hour wait. Seriously worth it. And you MUST GET THE SWEET PEPPERS on top
Best cheese steaks in all of Philly! If you're looking for a quick late night bite, this may not be the right place. The lines are known to be long, especially on the weekend. However, the wait is so worth it! Max's has the best subs - and customer service - in the city. The cheese steaks are delicious, filling and unforgettable! You won't regret going here! Just remember to bring cash, as it's a cash only business.
I live for places like this. I don’t even have words to describe how happy and excited I feel when they finally call my number and I get my giant sandwiches. Yeah, the line can get long. No, it’s not fancy. Yeah, I’ve waited almost 2 hours once for a sandwich. Yeah, it gets hot in the summer time. But I promise you, the sandwich is delicious and you’ll be amazed by the amount of beef cooking behind that glass. Plus, these are the nicest people ever. Don’t be put off by the location. Try it!
Real talk. This is the best place for cheese steaks, period. It brings you right to the heart of Philly (North Philly) and has you fed by the very food item the city is known for - a cheese steak! You'll get to see the block in motion with it's locals, travelers and everything in between. Don't matter if you black, white, yellow or anything in between, everyone gets treated the same way! With respect to the food, shoot, it's legit the best damn cheese steak I've ever had! I'm not even going to try and compare it to anything else bc there isn't anything to compare it to. Stop reading this review already and get on in there! Then enjoy the food over a drink right next door!
Nasty, cold meat. They used to be good not anymore. Waste if money.
Food was GREAT. Atmosphere was entertaining. A true north philly gem. Don't go there with thin skin. If you can't take don't give it out. LOVE IT!
I love Max's ever m every time i go back home i stop pass here for cheese steaks! Best place to go for them but be prepared for the crowd😁
Hands down the next cheese steak in the city. long lines and moderate wait at times. But well worth it! Everything about this cheese steak joint is worth the experience. Rolls are from the best bakery in the whole world. Cheese is Quality and the Steak is Grade A. Sorry I can't find a pic. But if you seen the movie Creed. You'll this is a great place. As it was featured in the movie. Check this place out, you will not be disappointed.
Hands down the best cheese steak in Philly! I don't understand how I've lives my whole life and just discovered them this year. Absolutely delicious! I love the fact you also can sit down and eat in the adjacent bar area and get a drink! Love this place.
When you visit Philly it's always a good idea to have cheesesteaks before leaving Philly. I would have loved to write a positive review however, we arrived here at 11:15. Although it states that the restaurant opens at 11:00 it was not opened yet. The workers were just arriving when we arrived so we waited until 11:30 at 11:30 we called before entering back in and they told us it would be another half hour before they opened. So we left. Not the way to do business if you call yourself a well established business. We headed to Jimmy G's instead and was not disappointed with the food and service.
The best cheese steaks in the city. If you go on the weekend be prepared to wait. I waited an hour & a half on a Saturday evening. I got there at 7:20p and placed my order at 8:40p. It was worth it!!!!!
Oh my GOSH!!!! We had the chicken and the steak and they were both delicious! Scrumptious! Fantastic. Seasoned to perfection!!! I’ll be back! We got there around 1130 on a Thursday neither parking nor the wait were a problem! They were patient with us as Phillysteak versions.
Legendary Max's steaks speaks for itself! I had a chicken cheese steak omw to Temple hospital and it was amazing!!! I hadn't been in a while but the food was still amazing and great service too. Not to mention, you can also have an adult cocktail while you wait for your food at the adjoining bar!
I wish I could give this place more stars! The best cheese steak hands down I've ever had in my life the meat was fresh and so tender with the cheese melted in perfectly there was not one bite of gristle or nasty fat whatsoever the roll was buttery and toasted to perfection it was humongous!
It took me 3 days to eat a large. I ate half of a half at the restaurant and took the rest home with me to New York and was reheating it in my toaster oven and it was just as good .
There is a bar connected to the sub shop and the bartender was so nice we had the best time there.
The jukebox had great music and it was just an all around fun time they have a free parking lot in the back which makes life much easier it's almost worth a trip back down just to get another cheese steak! Yhey also have a seafood menu to die for !!!
The steaks here are DELICIOUS!! My favorite spot in the city, HOWEVER, they have some extremely rude "sistas" working behind the counter. Very rude, speaking negatively about paying customers, critiquing how they look, when they apparently thought it was appropriate to come to work in pajamas😩. Ratchet behavior, horrible customer service (from the women not men) but great steaks.
I'm from NYC. I've never had an authentic Philly cheese steak before, so naturally, my girl and I head over to Pat's and Geno's cuz, you know, that's what you're supposed to do. Now, don't get me wrong, they were good, but I felt like there was something missing. Then our cab driver told us about Max's. Hands down, it's the clear winner. The price is right, the portions are huge, and it's connected to a lounge! It's kinda in a hood location, but that's what makes it better, in my opinion. If the locals like it, I love it.
3 stars because of wait time. It took FOREVER to get my steak. It was good though. Don't go there if you are on a time schedule.
Was also told their steaks are dry. I went there around 430 on a Friday and my steak was moist, and bread soft.
If I'm in the area id return, but I'm not traveling out of my way to get a Max steak.
Being from Philadelphia, but now residing in Baltimore, I was truly excited to have a chance to go back home for a youth convention and end the trip with a visit to Max’s Steaks.
When I was living there Max’s wasn’t around. I took my wife there and church family and they loved the steak. I’m sorry I did LR take a picture, but I was hungry, they were about to close and I had a half hour drive back to the hotel.
I got my steak and my wife got a chicken steak and she lived it just as I did. It was a enough for me to even take back home for the road. They give you enough steak for your buck. Thanks Max’s for marking my night.
Oh yea, even though there was a line and a wait, again, it was worth it because they are so popular.
This is the only place where I will buy a cheese steak. I ordered a chicken cheese steak this time and it was delicious! I'm trying to cut back on red meat. I also brought my family that was visiting me from out of state. They love their food too.
On the recommendations of others, I made the trip on the Broad Street subway to this steak place/dive bar. There were only a few people ahead of me in line but it took a long time to get served. The sandwich itself - I got a half with mushroom, fried onions, whiz and hot peppers - was very good. Beware - do NOT get a whole for yourself unless you have some kind of herculean appetite because it's literally almost three feet long. A half is a foot long. Also, just a heads up, this place is in the deep hood so if you are not comfortable being in such an area, take note. Personally, it doesn't bother me. I'm just here for the food.
I love this place !.... BUT PEOPLE ARE LEAVING MAXS SHOULD BE CAREFUL!...This is one of the best cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. I was in line for 2 hours and the usual wait is 45min.
I saw at least 12-20 people walk away and the same 30 people were in line for 2 hours. They waited on everyone in the bar and took all their orders while letting everyone else stand outside in line for their to go orders . There were people in front of me who were in line 90 min by the time I got there.
Sure the food is good but Max's is losing a lot of business. I'm sure they are making good money but because of bad line management they are probably losing about 25 percent or more potential profit just because they have 1 or 2 people making steaks.
While I was there at least 12-20 people walked away. I guess the place is making enough money so they don't care
It's almost like they are reaching their hand into a pot full of cash and spilling half of it on the ground.
There are a lot of people making steaks good steaks downtown and in the northeast. I will never come back to Max's on a weekend and many in line today said the same.
The food is 5 star.. but the wait will make you second guess yourself. Definitely worth it though!
Heard about this place. The guy thinnks he has a handle on all the orders but out of 5 sandwiches he got one right. I asked him twice about my order and he brushed me off with "I got you". Well, he did not get anything.
Also, there are signs that say "No Tipping" but he makes a point of asking which is okay, whatever because they are busy. I did tip gladly. But I do expect my order to be correct if that is your brag.
Big meaty sandwich, but if it isn't what you wanted there is no point. Won't go back, too many other places with better sandwiches.
This place is great! Very good sandwiches, we went with local who have been to other sandwich shops and they said this is the best.
Long lines and this seems the norm, it took us almost 1.5hrs to get in. We would definitely go back. You order the meat and cheese 1st and items you want cooked in then they call you back up by number to add the extra toppings. They also sell beer.
This place is AWESOME!!!!! If you have never been here you need to go. And for those who have been then you know. These cheesesteaks are the best. I keep mine simple, salt-pepper-lettuce-tomato and mayo. While I'm waiting I grab a quick beer. When I'm in Philly I always stop here.
Okay i will add my 2 cents to the 1000+ reviews. First time in Philly ordering one of these mythical foods. The guy behind the counter set us up with a large, sent us to the bar area and we ate and drank and kept on eating. Messy, but excellent. All Philly steak sandwiches will be compared to Max's from this day forward. And i got a nice pair of sunglasses for $5 down the street
We enjoyed the Philly cheese steak here but it was a bit out of town to get to. The service was fast and cheerful. One star deducted for the restroom facilities (unless you are desperate or don't mind lack of cleanliness) in the bar section of where you can sit to eat your meal.
Kind of a long wait, but in line with some similar steak places. The meat isn't chopped enough for my liking, and it isn't left in slice form either (like Steve's would be), it's someplace in between. Made the meat seem very chewy to me. I've had better, I've also had a lot worse. Worth checking out if you're in the area, but it's like a lot of other neighborhood places that you probably wouldn't go out of your way for. The roll was good, atmosphere was friendly.
Great steaks. Lots of meat. The staff is quick and efficient. I live in Jersey and it was worth the trip before returning home. I had so much left that I had to eat the 2nd portion the next day it taste even better the next day. I highly recommended.
All the way from Baltimore!! No way I can be as close as King of Prussia Mall and not make the visit to Max's. Never disappointed! We we're in n out in 15 minutes!! Excellent!!
Took a first timer with us and he enjoyed every bit of it. We'll be back!Yum!
All the way from Virginia! I was born and raised in Philly. Excellent visit home. My hubby and I enjoyed Max's! It was his first philly cheese steak experience. He loved it!
A Philadelphia resident said that the restaurant is the best but I haven't tried it. I'm in the city from Brooklyn and I don't want to be disappointed but it's probably best if I don't play with my stomach. I've eaten the best food that I've prepared myself and restaurant food will never taste better than your own
I appreciate this being a black owned business. I love the support and love its getting but I was not moved by the cheesesteak at all. I thought the meat could of been chopped up finer 🍖than it was . I wanted raw onions instead of the cooked onions I was given. Also, the meat was bit dry and tough for me to bit through. I will still support in other ways though.
Waited in line for over an hour, two people walked in the back asked for sandwiches, and they were served before the 25-30 people that had been standing in line already. Finally got our sandwiches and they were not hot, barely Luke warm, the meat was not chopped fully, and by not chopped fully I mean there were huge chunks of steak, that I didn't trust were cooked completely. The staff was friendly, but there was no sense of urgency with the 25-30 people staring them in the face. The line cook had informed us that he had been working for over 24 hours straight, which in my mind would effect the businesses performance and quality.. will not be returning, and will make sure my loved ones stay away.
Cheesesteak was on point. Flavor and lots of meat. Bread was soft and soaked in all the flavor. Line was long but worth the 25min wait. Next time I’m a get it with no ketchup. It really didn’t need it.
Authentic Philly Cheese Steak.... But I really don’t get it. Yes the sandwich was tasty. I just don’t understand the big deal about Philly Cheese Steak. It was fresh and cooked to order. Very friendly service. I was there after 7pm and was served very quickly. I heard it could be over an hour other times. Don’t let the neighborhood scare you, people were very nice and friendly. I would absolutely recommend... if you like cheese Steaks.
I don't want to upset anyone and I understand what kind of place this is. I love the steaks here but be prepared to wait about an hour if any line exists. A lot of the staff is friendly but this ain't Burger King so you won't have it your way. It is sorta like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld but I still hit it up over some of the other places in Philly which operate similarly.
Great mushroom cheese steaks; so good😋 I can't ever finish mine because its sooo much! One thing for sure is that you won't be hungry after that much steak; their not stingy with the steak.😊I can't speak on anything else there because that's all I've ever eaten from this store.
I must say this steak shop is in the Top Five steak shops in The City. The steaks are husky and delicious, the cooks are entertaining and customer-friendly, good with the public never a problem. The lines will wrap around the corner at any given moment. Must-try, must-visit this place, and another key note: this place made cameo features in the A-Movie "Creed". Much Love Max's.
I haven't been to Max's in a long time; they were good back then. Now, they knocked my six off with their hoagies and cheese steaks. If you're coming to Max's bring your appetite, the sandwiches are meaty and large.
I took a ride up to Philly with my sister and she took me to Max's. I'm a Jim's South Street cheese steak kind of girl, but hey she was driving..lol. When you step into Max's be prepared, the line is LONG and you will be there for a while. The people working behind the counter keep you entertained and the wait was well worth it. I got a whole cheese steak and it was DELICIOUS! I am definitely making a return trip.
Best philly cheese steaks ever. You would be rubbing shoulder to shoulder and in line for an hr but it was well worth it. It was also a highlight in Creed 2. Very cool.
This is a no frills type of restaurant, but the best place to get a cheesesteak. Waited at least an hour to get delicious sandwiches. I would do it again because it is well worth it.
This place is underrated. They have the best cheesesteaks in the city. Get there early, if not you will in line for a few minutes, but it's worth it!!!
The food must be amazing. The line was long, and not moving so I didn't get to try it this time. I suppose that gives me a reason to come back. It was highly recommended as THE go-to spot for cheese steaks by a friend that used to live in that area.
Was in Philly for the weekend and had to stop by Max's. Steak subs are definitely good & the people are very cool. While standing in line some guy just walked up to me and gave me $20. Told me to pay it forward. Much respect Philly!
My wife and I came here yesterday from New York to get some steaks. I didn't think it was going to be that mind-blowing until I ate my first bite. Excellent customer service, friendly people, and the far better steaks than the ones we tried at Pat's and Geno's.
Recommended highly by a number of people as the best place for Philly cheese steak. We ordered a cheese steak with onions, peppers, provolone cheese which somebody said was a traditional cheese steak. I don't eat much beef but decided while visiting Philly I wanted to try what people said was the real deal. It didn't disappoint. Wish I had asked for extra sauce, cheese, peppers and onions. With all the meat you get the additional toppings would have made it even better. Eat in or take out. There's a wait but wasn't bad especially since people watching the action on the street while waiting is entertaining.
I asked around town where the best place to get a cheesesteak was I was told Max's by several people. The atmosphere is a little urban there were people constantly trying to sell you something. The line was wrapped around the building which I didn't mind it was a Saturday that's to be expected. When I was trying to place order the guy was Rude, obnoxious and belittling everyone that passed through. I'm not sure if he was having rough day because it was a sunny day in Philadelphia( no pun intended) and he didn't want to be there. This was the rudest customer service I ever received at a restaurant in my life. He had everyone on edge when placing order. The cashier wasn't any better she was on her phone half the time didn't greet patrons or anything just took cash. I would never go there again. Overall the food was good but not worth the hassle dealing with unfriendly workers.
The food is beyond amazing. I am from Ohio, and every time I go to Philly, this place is a must. The portions are huge, and super flavorful. The area is a little rough, but I love urban landscapes, and I felt no danger, at all. The workers were fast, and friendly, and the food was served, in a reasonable time. I usually come to Philly, on weekends, and there may be a 30 - 50 person line, on a Friday, so be aware. But, the food is so good, I will gladly wait, again, and again. They even have take home sandwiches, where they put the cooked meat, in foil, and put the bread, separate, along with your toppings. I was able to bring a few, home, for my friends who never had a real Philly. I love this place!
I wish I had a picture to show how good these cheese steaks were. Just so you know, this is one of those hood spots (urban atmosphere) that, in my opinion, has the best cheese steaks in Philadelphia. I been to Geno's, Pat's, and even Steve's prince of steak but Max's takes my vote.
Was recommended this by a friend for authentic and excellent Philadelphia cheese steak. I got the basic Philly cheese steak with onions and provolone. You have your choice of Swiss or provolone here. I got the sweet peppers topping.
You have to wait awhile as the steak is prepared right in front of you. Walk-in give your order and get your number and wait. Whole process took about 15 minutes. Well worth the wait!
Was up here on vacation from Atlanta and have found the best cheesesteak in the area. More than enough to feed two or more people for a full size sandwich that is 2 feet long and packed with tasty meat...
It is a little bit hard to find and parking can be a chore as well. Lots of traffic but make the effort and you will be rewarded.
This place does not disappoint. It is all that you hope it to be. First of all, the service is pretty good for being super busy.
Shout out to the staff--who made sure that we had everything that we needed without being overly present in our conversation. They were great!
Best cheese🧀 stake🥩 i have ever had in my life. You can tell right when you walk through the door that this is the spot i want to eat at. Area is not the best but the food is incredibly good.
Best cheese steak I've had in Philly. The meat is so flavorful and definitely get the mayo on the sandwich. Also, come hungry. The sandwiches are huge!
5 stars because of the high quality of the steak. Unassuming place that excels at what they do - Philly Steaks. Have been told that the line can be long but our wait was less than 15 minutes. My only complaint - no steak sauce. Looking to go back when in Philly. Will bring my own steak sauce!
Max's Steaks! My mouth is watering as I write this review. If we get anywhere near Philadelphia we go to Max's for a Philly Cheese Steak. We've eaten at the "so called famous" Gino's & Pat's they DO NOT COMPARE to the quality of Max's period. Max's IS on the corner of a rundown part of town. But don't let that deter your visit. The people are just people trying to get a good cheese steak like you. You will be hooked once you try it. A couple tips #1 Its CASH only. #2 Get the foot long. Eat half and save the rest. You will want more later and won't have to drive back. Don't miss this experience if you go to Philly. Enjoy!
Not including tax or tip but if I had $20 and had to decide how to best use it besides making it rain at (insert any strip club name here), I would go to...read this and 406 more
