How would you rate Lois the Pie Queen?
The best place for breakfast! Lunch is ok too. Deserts are AWESOME!
Yummy "Key lime pie with raspberry topping"!
this is a homey corner cafe with old photos of smiling people everywhere and a mouth-watering selection of pies. their breakfasts are amazing too- with souther selections such as hotcakes and fried chicken and waffles. constant coffee refills keep you alive and kicking.
Every time I come to Oakland, I hit up this spot. The Salmon Coquettes are great!
Arguably the best breakfast experience in the Bay Area. Simply Awesome place.. Love it
Had the fried chicken and it was not great.
Down right excellent Southern cooking, with friendly neighbor conversations! The chicken with waffles was absolutely memorable - crispy, juicy, flavorful, and excellent paired with syrup and waffles. Don't miss the Sunday specials, lemon icebox pie, as well as other delicious southern goodness. Finding the place can be tricky, so be sure to use a reliable mapping app.
My partner has bought me the fantastic pecan pies for my b.day the last two yr. She mentioned they were a breakfast place too and I was all for trying it. Great breakfast! Huge, fresh portions. I will bring any visiting friends here, wanna turn all I know, who love b.fast, on to this place. The homey atmosphere is brilluant and real.
First meal there, in '73.Still wonderful today.
Sorry to have to say this but our BLT's were a whole lot of L and not much else and the potato chips tasted old. We ordered pies to take home, they were out of Banana Cream so ordered Coconut Cream, hum, not a whole lot of flavor. My friend got the Peach Cobbler and while the crust was tasty, there was so much nutmeg with the peaches that we felt like we were having nutmeg cobbler. Really didn't like spending almost $40 for less than marginal food.
My friends and I randomly selected a place to eat while we were visiting Oakland one Sunday. Let me tell yah, I am so glad we picked the Pie Queen. It was a quaint breakfast and lunch restaurant that was super busy but the wait to be seated was less than 15 min. I started with the last slice of sweet potato cheesecake and it was so delicious I nearly cried. I then ordered the pork chop breakfast with hash brown, scrambled eggs, English muffin and a cup of coffee. Damn, it was so good and I left so satisfied.
Great local everything. If they put more chi-chi dishes on their menu I might like that but then, they wouldn't be Lois. Outstanding.
They food was great and customer service was on point.
A staple of comfort food. I been eating at Lois' for 30+ years. First went as a teenager and haven't stop going since. The staff is always friendly, the prices for portions are amazing. Please foody snobs stay away so you don't ruin a great neighborhood eatery. Real food for real folks!
Waffles were great, chicken was tender. The chicken breading was a bit bland but had a great crunch.
Great place, Great service, and Great food.. full of history....
This place is DIRTY and disgusting. Look at the bathroom door covered in grime and dirt. If they can't clean the outside, I can't imagine how they don't clean the food area.I ordered the Sunday dinner with smothered steak, greens, yams and Mac N' cheese. Found a white stick in my Green's. It was said that it was from the turkey that is used for flavor. Then a few bites later, I bit into a small circular bone. They compensated me with a piece of apple pie. The piece of pie was good. The double cheeseburger was like cardboard but if you put enough catchup on it, will go down easier. If you're going to eat any thing from this place choose the chicken and waffles. be prepared for the waffle to be burned on the edges. I believe Lois would be devastated that her name is attached to this place.
Their omelettes are So good! You definitely get huge portions that are worth every dime!
pretty good diner but expensive for what it is. one of the few places with corned beef hash.
Best breakfast in Oakland. Their house made sausage is terrific! And their chicken and waffles are fabulous. A perfect locals place. In fact, their menu has a great piece on Lois' legacy. Great Oakland history of community and generosity with tasty pies included. Heads up Bay Area Air Quality Management they need bike racks badly. I've seen at least 4 bikes all clustered together around a street sign because there's no bike parking.
They are so friendly and accommodating! It's literally like eating at your own family's restaurant:) I came in on Monday and these folks were so happy and engaging like it was Friday:) I took some pecan pie home to eat later and when I tell you it literally melted in my mouth, it is an understatement! I couldn't put the pie down and I literally tried to save some, even for the next five minutes and could not! These people are not playing, and Lois is not just the Pie Queen, she is the Pie Entity!! Will be returning today:)
One of my favorite places to go before I go to a game. It feels like you're visiting someone's house rather than dining in a restaurant. Get the Reggie Jackson if you're brave!
Normally I mention good things about a restaurant but for this entry I will name the bad.
#1: Missing from this establishment is a large sign outside the door or inside the restaurant in a visible location that says: CASH ONLY .. I almost left the restaurant not knowing that they only accepted cash & I wasn't sure if I had enough (i was planning to pay by card)
#2: Closing so early. I know that ALL soul food joint close early but before drive time? Come on now.. At least stay open till 7 or 8pm nightly.
It's a local hit spot & I will come here again but those things need to be fixed. Badly
Great neighborhood diner/breakfast spot! Good food and a friendly staff! If anything else, it's a must visit to see the wall of celebrities who've visited the diner.
Awesome place. The food along with the atomosphere was great also.
We come here all the time and have never been disappointed. The food is fabulous and the service is always first class. We love Chris.
Old skool diner that has so far survived gentrification. They have awesome comfort breakfast food and even veggie sausage! Great people, great food, and ...pie. what more could a person want?
Food is great! Huge portions, so prepare to leave with extras. Only downside is the last time I came they were still cash only.
I doubt there are many places like this left, a very special place.
Tasty tasty pies and waffles. The fried chicken was pretty good too--I loved the cornmeal batter.
Great local spot in Oakland. Pretty good chicken & waffle but I would still say that brown sugar kitchen is better.
Awesome service great food. Chicken and waffles is perfect serving size and delicious!
Great food great customer service been eating there since I was about 6 years old and now I'm 52
The food, the service, is pretty cool! The decoration's place is awesome! A lot of pictures of famous people and the deserts are delicious! :P
Great food, huge portions, comfy atmosphere, friendly service. A little pricier than I'd expect for breakfast.
Great old school diner with a nice old fashioned decor. Food portions were great and yes the chicken and waffles was delicious (just fyi it can be either the breast/thigh when you get this). Coffee tasted great, staff was great and was always checking up on you.
Love the pies don't enjoy the staff or the food.
Always worth the wait. The salmon croquettes are my favorite. Excellent service and genuine care.
What can you say? Lois was Queen & this place has the most awesome breakfast and the friendliest family style service anywhere. I've been eating there since Lois was serving the Reggie specials and I am a breakfast joint fantic. A good breakfast is a harbinger of a great day. And every day I start at Lois is great. Her son Chris has run the place since the Queen left us decades ago & he has maintained the wonderful ambience & awesome southern style cooking while appealing to an ever broaded clientele. Here is a mix of what makes Oakland the best - black/white/rich/poor - everyone is welcome. This place is what the outer world should be like. Thanx Chris Davis for keeping it real! Oh! I almost forgot about the key lime pie..... mmmmmm....
Home made biscuits. Grits on point! Share a breakfast if you're hoping to have room for pie! Be sure to check the pie case for specials. Family run. Cash only.
Great pie! Sweet potato was awesome, not too sweet. Lemon icebox pie was also excellent.
First visit and I'm so excited to have met the owner and get your picture taken with him. Food family fun.
Came at 3 on Sunday and they were closed (when people were inside eating). The door was open with the closed sign on a chair. Google said this place closes at 4. What a waste of gas! I guess people wanted to get off early today. On to the next one. I will update this review if I ever feel like coming back all the way here.
Great neighborhood corner spot that I'd never have found if not for a local friend. The pecan pie was tasty and so was the chicken and waffles. Staff is as friendly as everyone says. Just keep in mind that they are cash only.
Came to pick up a key lime pie and it was a 10 out of 10 and killed it at Thanksgiving!! Wished I had time to stay for he chicken because it looked amazing. I'll certainly be back for pie and lunch!
The best food made from fresh good quality ingredients. Loved the veggie omelett! I was served more than I could eat & I can eat a lot! Great friendly, serving staff. Cash only payment
Excellent banana pudim and a delicious chicken waffle! The people there is special, very kind and warm service!
Chris and his staff were wonderful and really enjoyed the chicken & waffles. But my favorite was the sweet potato cheesecake; the best pie I've had...no joke.
Did not get served in timely manner, waited for table patiently; once seated the waitress the waitress never came back with any beverages or to take our order. Waitress served standing guest hot coffee while never attending to our beverage needs. After waiting more than 35 minutes and never getting any service we left hungry and very disappointed. The busser offered apilogies and stated they were short two people. We have been coming to this restaurant for years and this type of service never happened when Lois was there. I hope they improve their customer service or get more help for high peak times. All customers should be treated the same.
The food is great, much try if you are in Oakland...but i forgot to tell y'all it's cash only, *(BUT)* it is worth it...Mon-Fri 7am-2pm,Sat 9am-2pm,Sun 10am-4pm...
Nice spot for breakfast. Parking wasn't easy but food was good.
This place gets packed! Like any great spot for breakfast in the bay, get here early on weekends. The pie is outstanding, highly recommend pecan and key lime. The fried chicken is outstanding, very difficult to find flavor like this outside of the South. If you want a more simple diner breakfast they have that too. Remember it's cash only!
This place was a hidden gem!!! Really delicious soul food brunch. Highly recommend going! I had the salmon croquettes and they are served here with egg whites and grits. You must try their home made iced tea and biscuits.. so yummy !!!
The chicken had no "soul food" flavor (taste like cardboard) and the waffle was hard and cold! Please bring cash because if you don't you have to walk down about 2 blocks pass some guys smoking weed to a corner store to use their ATM (that charges you an additional fee to get your money) to get cash to pay your bill. Not a good look!!! Overall the experience wasn't good. The owner Chris wasn't friendly toward me....a new comer to Oakland CA. I guess the locals get better service then newcomers..... noticed. The customer service was a 1 out of 10.....Never again. "A soul food hole in the wall without a soul"!
Fantastic spot with local celeb cred. Get the Reggie special, indulge. Cash only, but a nice hidden gem. Oh, and ridiculous pies that made the table get some to go.
If you're looking to stuff your face with soul food, you came to the right place. Bring cash and get ready for the best chicken and waffles you've ever had!
This restaurant is very good. The food is amazing and the staff are nice. The only downside is that they don't accept card. Definitely reccomend it.
I was seated promptly but waited ten mins before asking a waiter if I could get some water and place an order. My waitress came and took my order within the next five mins but the only other time I saw her was when the food came. No one ever refilled the water though I was checked on twice by the person who got my waitress for me the first time. I had to go find my waitress who was chatting and laughing with another waiter behind the counter to get my check. Then I was told it was cash only. There is no sign on the window, attached to the wait to be seated sign or on the menu that I noticed. I had no cash on me so at this point I was overly annoyed. The place was way too small for the horrid service I received, this place has gone down hill over the years.
This is one of my favorite brunch places in the whole Bay Area. I've been going here since the late 1980s for the biscuits and grits. I was missing my grandmother's biscuits when I tried Lois's, and my goodness, they are so delicious. It was the next best thing to being able to have a meal with my grandmother, who was far away. Outstanding food and friendly, welcoming service. The family that owns this place (now operated by Lois's son and grandchildren) is wonderful and has been at the heart of the neighborhood for decades. I love sharing this place with folks who have never been here. Great, down home cooking. Bring your appetite for a hearty meal and bring a smile for the hard working staff and owner and for the "wall of fame" of the restaurant's many notable visitors.
Solid soul food with solidly high prices. Don’t let the common appearance fool you. This places charges a premium for its good name. There’s love in the food and in the people working here but, It’ll cost ya. It’s cash only so, just leave the money on the dresser on your way out.
The food was okay. Better than hotel food but not the best soul food places I've visited. A good selection of choices, like a Buttermilk waffle and 2 pieces of fried chicken, pancakes, which by the way are huge! Salman croquettes omelets, and my favorite side, grits. It can be something to check off your list that you've visited, but for me, is not worth a second visit.
Amazing!! Don't know what else to say. We had the chicken and waffles. Both were great! Chicken was crunchy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. We also had the raspberry key lime pie, and the sweet potato cheesecake. Both were delicious, and worth the trip alone! Staff and the locals were so friendly, and very welcoming. Get over there and eat some of the delicious food now!!
The energy in this place brought me to tears. Beautiful spot built on love and good food. What more can you ask for?
The food, aumbience, and the people made me feel I was at Mom's house sitting at kitchen table watching momma cook Sunday breakfast. Fried Chicken is Awesome the service is just like being at Mom's so speak up and make yourself at home. Don't expect fast service. However, the food was hot so they take there time cooking for you great tasting food just like mom. So be patient the wait is worth.
No words. This place is hands down phenomenal. The food is TOP OF THE LINE. The service is TOP OF THE LINE. The owner is ABOVE THE TOP OF THE LINE. This understated corner restaurant is a manifestation of how a successful business ahould be run. There is a huge undertow of professionalism combined with unbelievable personalization of service. Everything was delicious. I just feel lucky I got to experience this place. We are from Philadelphia and eating at Lois the Pie Queen was a highlight of our trip. Lois established a landmark and raised an awesome son. ❤
Fantastic biscuits come with everything; I really like their sausage breakfasts as well as their Sunday dinners. My wife loves their "Reggie Jackson" (Pork Chops and eggs).
Got the chicken and waffles for breakfast. Chicken was really nice as I expected. I preferred the waffles to be on the crispier side though. Hubby got the Reggie Jackson meal which had 2 pork chops, hashbrowns eggs and toast. Huge serving! He was pleased with the pork chops too. He said they were flavored well, just a little on the dry side. Would come back to try the shrimp and grits next time.
This is REAL Fried Chicken!!! So good! Staff was incredibly friendly too. Our whole table of 5 loved their food!
Going to Lois the Pie Queen always feels like going to eat at grandma's house! The food is so good it comforts your soul! My favorite is the Supreme Crab Omelette with cheesy grits, biscuits, and coffee! Scrumptious 7up pound cake a la mode tops it off😁
Great service, very friendly staff. Haven't eaten here often but has a real comfy and chill feel. Great coffee. Parking is a little tricky, but during the week not too bad. Fried chicken is moist and bacon is very tasty. Very old school interior.
Fried chicken and waffles delicious. Crispy crunchy batter with light spices. Waffle was cake like and slightly crisp. Grits were nice and creamy. Definitely going back.
Disclaimer: I did not try the pie. That being said I really love the homey feel of this restaurant and the food (mostly) stood up. Be prepared to be full for many hours after your meal. The highlight was definitely the fried chicken which was extremely moist and wonderful. Unfortunately, both bread based products i tried were only ok. The biscuits are very very small and not up to my admittedly high standards. The wafffle also did not have the crispness I expect. Regardless, if you bring cash and an appetite, I recommend Lois'.
Wow!! The food is amazing! The service is just as great! Definitely recommend the chicken and waffles....the chicken is perfectly cooked..crispy, not greasy. And the waffle is light & airy. Felt like I was eating at my Grandmother's table.
Southern Hospitality in the Bay Area. Family owned and operated with a community support feel...and bomb diggity fried chicken!
As my children and I walked towards the restaurant we could smell the aroma of fried chicken. The house was packed and we were greeted warmly by third generation family operator- Corey who was exceptionally friendly to us and others who were dining.
We ordered the two piece chicken plate- the flavor and crispness of the skin was amazing. Mouth watering, tender and not overly greasy.
Wish we had room to try the pies-next time. We dined around 1:30-2pm on a Saturday. I can imagine a line wrapped around the door during Sunday when they offer other delicious eats like smothered chicken.
Make a trip- you won't be disappointed!
Comfort food prepared with excellence in a warm and homey atmosphere. The staff are friendly and courteous. Real cool local spot!
I loved this place. I moved here from South Carolina and let me tell you, there isn't anything I miss more about it than the cost of living and food like...read this and 886 more
