How would you rate Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center?
They were kind enough to allow my family member to host an Autism Art Gallery without charging her!! Thank you!!
This place is worth a visit. The architecture alone is something to behold. Welcoming staff a real plus. Going back next weekend.
What a beautiful home. My husband and cousins just got back from visiting. Loved how they are preserving our black histoty.
Wonderful place to hold community meetings
The house is still in shape
Wow! I am so glad that I came. The preservation of this house was amazing. If have never been definitely go. The house is also available for displaying artwork, meetings and many other things. The owner of the house has a deep rooted history in Newport News. Very close to the Downing Gross Cultural Center. Free admission with a $2 donation if possible.
Amazing museum. Great cultural events as well. Check out their social media for Black History facts!
Great history I didn't if know about but I will be back
Lots of good history. Very nice and well kept house thanks to the city of Newport News.
Such a neat little historic place, in Newport News about a 1/2 hour from Williamsburg. It was great seeing a historical home that has been so preserved, and is still a pillar in the community in the legacy of Mr. Newsome. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and friendly, we learned and laughed all throughout our tour. Plan for maybe 45 minutes or so. There is no "set" admission fee, but they do suggest a $2 donation, which was worth it in our opinion.
Learn your history of Newport news and Virginia law.

Must see! Well preserved historical home in Newport News. Interesting history and special exhibits housed in this home owned by a black lawyer in the late 1800's/early 1900's.
Wonderful history recommend it if you visit Newport News
Found some Dathan Kane artwork to purchase here back in 2017, and via this place, made a personal connection with the artist! Thank you!
Excellent preservation of local history!
The Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center is the restored 1899 residence of the African-American attorney J. Thomas Newsome (1869-1942) and his wife Mary Winfield Newsome. They moved into the house on 2803 Oak Avenue in 1906 after the birth of their only child and daughter Maurice Ethelred. The Newsome's began making changes to the house, making the salt box structure into an elegant Queen Anne residence which served as a hub for the local black community. The Newsome House now remains one of the timeless historic fixtures in the city, and it has become a venue for meetings, exhibitions, special events and other social functions. The Newsome House is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. It was the first structure owned by an African-American to be a recipient of a National Historic Preservation Award.
I attend the most wonderful cultural and educational gatherings here. The home is beautiful and historic! I encourage you to go!
