How would you rate Willie Mae's Grocery and Deli?
I found this place on google maps while at the Audubon park. I thought I would give it a try, since I saw the original Willie Mae's on the Food Network. I ordered the 3 piece dinner. The fried chicken was too salty, and a little overcooked. Fried chicken is salty, but this was way too much salt. I had red beans and rice on the side. They were okay. They were a little spicy. I also got a cornbread muffin on the side. The muffin wasn't too bad. It wasn't the greatest or the worse I've ever had. I would have to say for a 3 piece chicken dinner with one side for $11, I would say skip it and go to Popeyes to get a better chicken dinner for less. Also don't bother ordering sweet tea. After getting my tea, I noticed the Gold Peak tea dispenser. I don't care for Gold Peak, it was awful. The service was outstanding though. I would give the service 4 stars, but the Food not even close.
Great atmosphere. Chicken was the best I've had in a while. Not sure why the other guy said it was too salty. The sweet tea was great. Service was fast and it's not crowded like in town. The breading has a little spice and is so crispy. One chicken dinner fed my family so bring your stretchy pants.
They have the best fried chicken in town. It's a little pricey, but you can't beat having a good lunch with a family member on a lazy weekday then taking a stroll under the oak trees.
I am from out of state literally some of the best chicken I have ever had in my life was at Willie Maes!
Your standard over priced greasy fried chicken.
Great food. Great people. Great place to take your family. Reasonable prices.
This was I think by far the most memorable experience in my two-day trip to New Orleans. Everyone told me I had to stop here and I am so glad I did. This was definitely the best fried chicken I've ever had my life. If you go mid day during the week there will be no crowd. Take a trolley there from downtown and get a great view of New Orleans on the way.
The best fried chicken I've ever had. Period. If you visit New Orleans and don't go to Willie Mae's for chicken, you've made a big mistake. Sides were all delicious as well. Very casual, laid back. Don't expect peppy chain-restraunt service, but the waitress was attentive to our needs and made sure we were taken care of.
The chicken was well seasoned and the red bean nice/cream. The food was hot and fresh. Good service. Well price
The only fried chicken I'll eat. I'm amazed this location isn't jammed; the food is wonderful, it's on the streetcar line, and you can skip the long lines at the Treme location. Oh, don't miss the butter beans. Or the green beans.
If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I went with my family and received horrible service and food. When we arrived, they were not very busy. We ordered drinks, and upon requesting coke she said they were out, which was okay, but then someone else ordered a root beer and they were also out of that. 25 minutes after we order, the waitress comes back and says they are out of fries and half of us had to change an order, so I got a Caesar salad with no tomatoes (the menu only said there was romaine, croutons, Parmesan). We were already a bit upset that she never checked on us once for refills or to let us know our foods almost ready. Our waitress never even introduced herself, just took our order and left. After we waiting for a total of 45 minutes on our food, we were debating on getting up and leaving since half of us needed refills and the waitress never came by. She never came by to check on us or even apologize for the fact that the food was taking so long. After my brother went to ask how much longer the food was, she shortly brought it out a minut later. However, she only brought 4 of the 5 platters, leaving my mom without food. The waitress tried to leave the table without even asking if everything was alright, so we had to yell to stop her to say that we are missing a platter and that we needed ketchup and refills. After 5 minutes of waiting, I got up and asked another waiter for everything we needed. I found our waitress and said there was no dressing on my caeser salad and she said they don't have caeser dressing, and I replied with the fact that she should have said that when we ordered it. This place was horrible. It took forever to get the last platter and when we did it wasn't worth it and all our food was cold.
If it could get negative stars or perhaps black holes I would give it such.
I'd love to comment on the food but we never made it that far.
After wading through dirty tables. We found a semi-clean, wobbly one with nothing on it (salt, pepper, napkins, settings, etc) other than a few ketchup smudges. I was appalled at the general cleanliness knowing this place was previously a clean, well-themed brunch destination with a reputable chef.
We were seen somewhat promptly (~5 minutes) but this is where the service took a nose dive.
We waited about 15 minutes to get our drinks and place an order. As we ordered iced tea, we asked for sweetener and it never came. After 40 minutes another server asked if our order was taken. My one year old was staring to cry for food so we actually got up and left. This is a first for me and my family. We are normally very courteous to service industry professionals as we understand there can be issues along the entire restaurant's value chain that can slow down service.
Stay away from this dump if the food is anything like the service.
The chicken was great anf well worth the wait. The dinning experience could be better. No credit cards were accepted. The credit card machine was down and a the place looked empty and not well kept.
The fried chicken was really good. The service left something to be desired. We (my partner and I) were basically ignored for a good 40 minutes. 2 groups came in after us and got their waters right away. No one even asked us if we wanted waters until one of the tables that came in after us got their food. All in all, the fried chicken isn't famous enough for me to come back.
The fried chicken is a bit salty, but when you want Southern comfort food you can't go wrong with Willie Mae's!
Not to mention the service is great! This is a go-to gathering spot when my partner's family comes to town, and we've never had a bad experience at either location.
This location seems really mismanaged. I came to this location on a day it should have been open and it was closed with no signage to indicate the reason. I called the next day to see if they would be open and had someone treat me like trash (turns out it was the manager). I went in and my expectations were not meet. Only a few employees seemed to really want to be there. I was hoping for this place to live up to the legend, it did not. After talking to the locals the consensus is if you want great service and chicken experience, go to the original store.
Despite the reviews decided to give this place a try. Went by this afternoon, Wednesday, and it was locked with a past due electric note on the door. Maybe closed for real this time.
Good but very expensive. Better cheaper at Popeye's
I bought a Groupon for Willie Mae's before my New Orleans trip hoping to find time to go in a busy volunteer work week prepping some Hollygrove homes ahead...read this and 188 more
