How would you rate Ethiopian Cottage Restaurant?
I love this place. Have for years. I moved to Seattle for three years and missed it like crazy. Now I'm back in town and probably too excited to visit my favorite Ethiopian Restaurant. I always order the vegetarian platter and it's always damn near the most delicious thing on earth. The women that work the restaurant are always polite and industrious. You won't be disappointed.
Got takeout after the dinner rush. I was initially impressed with how clean and put back together the place was. I came in because it smelled great. I was not dissapointed! This was my first time eating Ethiopian food, and I was advised on what to get, which was a sampler of beef, chicken, and lamb with a lot of the most delicious and moist bread imaginable. The lamb was my favorite. Think Indian food on steroids. Easily the best food that I have ever had!
Tasty food served family style.
This was our third visit to this place. I will start by saying I have never been disappointed by the food here. We get the combination platters, and they are amazing. 2 combination platters are easily enough food for 4-5 people. Don't be afraid to ask for more injera (pancake type bread) right away. It is free and they never give you enough the first time. Be prepared to eat with your hands, I'm not sure they even have silverware. The food is delivered on big platters on top of the injera. you use little pieces of injera to scoop and eat the various plops of deliciousness.
They have a few choices of Ethiopian beers and wines, including a homemade honey wine that is very sweet, but a good compliment to the mildly spicy foods.
Now to explain why I give them 3 stars. The service is crap. There is an older man that is there every time we come, and he provides decent service, however, there is a female that was serving us this visit, and she was pretty bad. She never smiled and was not friendly. We ran out of injera very quickly and she never returned to check on us, we had to get up to ask for more. We had to order waters 3 times, and every time she brought us drinks, she forgot one of them. The food and coffee was slow, but that is to be expected here. The coffee is roasted and brewed fresh to order. But forgetting waters, napkins, etc. should be serving 101. She was not very apologetic or friendly and kind of put a damper on the evening.
Everything was wonderful.
I've gone here quite a few times with my friend and we really like it. The service is nice and the food is excellent.
Imagine delicious dishes made for you and your closest family. Then take a bottle rocket of flavor, and point it at the plate. The ensuing explosion of taste in each bite is what everyone gets to experience communilly with the tactile tearing of injera.
Great food! And they have gluten free injera!
While the food was ok, Customer treatment was horrible. Beware! They didn't accept groupon from us and gave stupid reasons for not accepting it. Manager was rude and says Groupon's T&C doesnt matter and what matters is his rules. Beware!
The food was excellent and the people who work there are very friendly.
I think this is a great Ethiopian joint locally available. Food is always served fresh. Owner and his wife (cooks too) are extremely nice. Buy the injera fresh and bring it home to eat.
Delicious food. Don't miss this gem of milwaukee.
Humble staff with good recommendation. We ordered 3 plates for 4 of us and it was enough. They have tried to keep their food culture which is USP for me. Wood tea pots, stainless steel serving plates and hand embroidered table cloth.
Helpful, friendly staff. Great food, great prices. I could eat here everyday. Get a combination plate!
Excellent food. Service can be slow, so be patient and enjoy.
Gone a few times now. I've tried the herbal tea, beef squares and spicy lamb entrees, its fun to do the entrees with a group of people. Really nice for sharing. The only downside is that my boyfriend and I always fight over who takes the leftover spicy lamb home.
Yum! The food is delicious, and eating with your hands instantly makes it fun.
A small investment in the decor, and this place would be hopping.
Highly recommend it.
What a cute lil place. Our server was kind and attentive. Whatever questions we asked, he gave us satisfactory answers. Food was incredible. If you like spices, curries or indian food in general this is the place for you. Definitely ask for their house special, you won't be disappointed. Will visit again. Humble, kind, grounded with great complexities in cuisine.
I love this authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The customer service is excellent! I will be back.
Excellent vegan dishes. The owner is very kind and the atmosphere is warming. I frequent weekly, sometimes twice.
Great ambiance, wonderful staff. When we entered, the owner greeted us and helped us with choices according to our preferences. Another server checked on us from time to time.
Varied and tasty food with the right amount of spicy spike. But, please don't compare it to Indian spices or curries. Doing so is an insult to both. We experienced uniquely Ethiopian food, nothing like Indian. In both cuisines, some techniques may be similar and both make good use of vegetables and lentils but that's where the similarities end.
The overall Ethiopian experience is very different, as well. No matter what you choose, it'll satisfy. We accompanied our dinner with a semi dry South African wine, a perfect compliment to the food flavors.
Sure to repeat our visit.
Incredible. I'd have more words but im currently experiencing the worlds largest food coma. Definitely, a must stop.
Excellent food. Great atmosphere. Awesome service
Love injeera and curries. Little kids used to Indian food will also love the 'dosa' and pappu option
Nice food.. Ethiopian food closely tastes like South Indian food.. so all you Indian guys out in Milwaukee, if your taste buds looks for something close to Indian food.. this place will be a good one to try
Cozy place, smells great, friendly host, great food. The whole atmosphere relaxing and interesting. I would definitely give it a try.
Good food, flavourful curries, neat ambience, courteous cook. Service was good but they took their own time to make us sit and note down the menu. We had ordered vegetarian platter worth $14.99. We also had lentil soup which was very soothing for the winter chills. Overall a good place and good food.
So delectable! Incredibly freindly owners and attentive staff. Housemade honey wine is a unique treat. My wife and I have tried many different dishes there, and all of them have been amazing. Don't miss out on this gem.
Such delicious food! Casual, warm dining environment. Very nice people.
Friendly service and delicious food. Got a combination platter for two and enjoyed everything on the plate. Would highly recommend a combination platter for people who don't have a lot of experience with Ethiopian food as it's a nice way to try a lot of quality dishes and get a feel for the cuisine. My only criticism of the restaurant would be the price point, as it's a little high for what you get, and the ambiance is quite casual. If your budget isn't too tight make sure to give this place a try!
One of my favorites. Kind staff and great food!
Awesome food! Got the vegetarian platter, everything on there was incredible! The cabbage was my favorite. Everyone was really friendly too :)
We got the appetizer spread that had several different veggies or sauces. It was amazing and flavorful. There was only two of us and we left feeling full and content. The food was great and I can't wait to go again! I want to try the other dishes that they have, all of which sound awesome. The only strange thing was the seating, but it was a nice experience overall
Some of the food is good. We bought a platter with a little bit of everything. Customer service is terrible, keep in mind we were the only couple in the entire restaurant. We asked what the sponge-y breading was and weren't really told. The server didnt really attend to us and just sat watching the TV. I also caught an attempted $10 up charge on my bill. I wont be going back. We should have just went to pizza shuttle.
My husband and I took my parents here for their first experience with Ethiopian food. They loved it. The waiter gave us his recommendations, and they did not disappoint. We ordered three entrees to split between 4 people, and it was plenty of food. The menu states to be patient as they prepare the food, so keep that in mind. It is well worth the wait, and we'll definitely be going back.
The food is so good. Great place for vegetarians and meat eaters. If your table orders multiple dishes, they usually ask to put it on one large platter, but I have asked to have my vegetarian platter served on a separate one as my meat-eating friends and have not had a problem.
You are encouraged to eat using your hands and the injera bread. I recommend giving it a try. It really adds to the experience.
I also highly recommend the honey wine. It is amazing. Good for sipping with the meal.
There is usually a Groupon offer available for combo platters- just be sure to tip for the full price.
Good space. I have never had to wait to be seated.
Clean, family owned, and friendly! I've had Ethiopian food in Chicago but this was my first experience with it in Milwaukee and so far they haven't disappointed. The food was very flavorful, I always get vegetarian dishes and for once I don't miss the meat. They also have gluten free injera bread available and while I don't know what the other stuff tastes like, I'm always perfectly happy with mine! Get the spicy lentils, so good.
Wonderful food, lovely staff. Make sure to have tea or coffee at the end of the meal. Bring a group and enjoy a big plate together.
So yummy, staff very sweet and accommodating 😊
It was my first time trying Ethiopian food and I enjoyed it! The staff was very nice and attentive. I was surprised how busy it was for a Thursday evening. I will definitely return!
Highly recommend. Great food, especially the chicken and beef. The people here are friendly and accommodating. I only wish i discovered this place sooner.
Deliously spiced meat and veggies served family style. Polite, attentive host and waitress.
Its was a good experience with this different cultural cuisine. Food was absolutely amazing, the only downside is you gotta go down with them hands to eat, no utensils.
This was my first time trying Ethiopian food. It was empty and quiet when we got there. The service was great. The honey wine was really good. We ordered one of the meals for two. My husband doesn’t eat pork or red meat so they allowed us to substitute those options with chicken instead.
This place is great! I know it's Sunday night, but I can't believe this isn't much more crowded in here. Delicious, authentic and nice servers.
Great restaurant! Would go again! Actually I have... Good food, Great stories and Friendly people.
A homely Ethiopian experience. The food is absolutely spectacular. Very authentic as you could tell the lady and husband pair put care into their food preparation.
Good food and quantity for the price. One plate for two was enough for three of us. They have vegetarian and meat dishes. They do not have cuttlery which was a nice authentic experience. You will eat with your hands.
No plates. No eating utensils...maybe no table. That’s right! If you go be prepared to be seated around a basket stand and your meal will come out communal style as you eat from a large tray. The evening we went the place looked like the help had walked out. The owner and wife ( cook no doubt) were a bit overwhelmed by customers, orders, and cleanups. Somehow none of these hardships detracted from the food and the experience This place is definitely not for the steak and fries customer. If you have a creative and inquisitive attitude towards dining out...it’s worth a try.
Great food with traditional offerings - great service and fun atmosphere.
Good local vibe. Must try the Homemade Honey Wine. My first and will have it again.read this and 74 more
