The historically black neighborhood, located about a mile northwest of downtown Miami, is in the midst of a revitalization. Get a feel for Overtown's culture in this video of my recent walking tour. Insider tips: After your tour, settle in for a huge meal at Jackson Soul Food. The Overtown eatery is a destination for locals, tour groups and celebs alike; NBA star Dwyane Wade is a regular. The portions are enough to satisfy a giant basketball player, and the prices are small enough for us mere mortals. The Folklife Fridays Fair brings food vendors, artisans and live entertainment to Overtown. The free event takes place on the first Friday of every month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ninth Street Mall. To experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Overtown for yourself, book a walking or bus tour through the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida. Tours start around $15 per person.
