How would you rate Mert's Heart & Soul?
Decent environment. Good variety of food. Service could be better - even though our family came as a party, I could not sense any patience among our server - it seemed like she EXPECTED us to give her a hard time. As far as the food, everything was alright... Nothing like Mama's cooking though. Succulent chicken, fried catfish was okay too. Just didn't hit the "soul" like it should have.
LOVE Mert's! I love real southern cooking, and that's what you'll find at Mert's. The staff was incredibly friendly and quick to fill up our drinks. Our food came out quickly and was delicious...incredible, in fact. The prices are great for the amount of food you get and it is definitely high quality. I will definitely be coming back for more!
We are from out of Peoria, IL.....it was great to find Southern Comfort Food. Had the famous Salmon Cakes, with red russet mashed potatoes, green beans with bacon, and corn bread. They make their own butter, which was excellent. Everything was amazing. This was by far my favorite tasting food in Charlotte.
Awesome food love coming here with my best friend. Waiter was friendly and very courteous. Look forward to bring more friends to enjoy classic southern food.
had the tilapia diner special sun feb/1/15 , boney small overpriced, the best part of the meal was the cornbread. Probably won't be back. Keep my $18 and buy better food and at a better price.
I came from Pittsburgh, PA to try this place after seeing it on the food network channel and I was extremely disappointed. The mac & cheese wasn't that great. It tasted like Stouffers Mac & cheese, the kind that comes from the freezer. I also had catfish which tasted like it came straight from the ocean that same day. Oh my was it fishy! And in a bad way. The yams were tasty. My silverware and cup were dirty so I ate with plasticware and drank from a styrofoam cup, as well as my partner who are with me. I jail wasn't impressed, at all.
The service was OK. My waitress was good, but I felt that the manager could have done more to make up for the nasty meal that I had ordered.
This place is truly the heart and soul of Charolette I would like to call the food Carolina gold it was phenomenal the food is clearly appealing. Now not only is the food good the service is warm hearted they make you feel right at home epsically with the selection of music they choose. I recommend this place to every an any one
Dropped by for lunch and had a good experience. The service was good, and the cornbread/butter they give at the beginning of the meal was really great. The chicken tenders, mac & cheese, and whiting were all especially good. The collard greens were so-so, but what place is perfect? We'd come here again.
I had such high expectations, and boy was I truly truly disappointed. I brought my mother here for a lovely day out and it was a waste of money, time and energy. Our waitress was absolutely horrible, we waited for an hour before anyone came to get our order. However once the food arrived it was not worth the wait. The fish tasted too salty and the texture of it was comparable to microwaved or reheated food. The sweet tea did not have any ice, the mac and cheese was mediocre at BEST, and the black eyed peas tasted as if they were poured straight from a can in somebody's soup kitchen. I would say that I couldn't even eat here again if the food was FREE! An enjoyable experience was ruined, I will not return the food and the service was terrible.
I drive my daughters and their friends to Charlotte so they can see one direction & Miley Cyrus and I can eat at Mert's. I usually have to feed them too, but then I can try their dishes as well. I love this restaurant-it is wonderful. the food reminds me of so many wonderful cafes I cannot find on the back roads of the Carolinas anymore and the atmosphere is perfect-everyone gets a table and everyone enjoys themselves.
Great local souther flavor our server was excellent, very attentive.
I heard so much about Mert's, that it was much better than Nana's. I was looking forward to a meal there. Finally two weeks ago Sunday a friend took a few of us there.. What a major let down. My piece of fried chicken wasn't freshly fried, so it basically had no taste. The ribs were tough, the collard greens were not southern style, the black eyed peas were extremely salty and the food came to us cold.. The waiter was not friendly and seemed annoyed, that should have been our first clue!. THE FOOD HAD NO LOVE.. The mac & cheese, corn bread and potato salad were decent. Overall, not a good experience. I'm chalking that experience up to 'THEY WERE HAVING A BAD DAY!'.. We all left a good tip regardless..I'm going to try them again, just to see. Sincerely, Beverly Scarborough ;-)
I have been to Mert's before and the experiences were fine but today turned me off and not sure if I will be returning. I took a friend there for lunch who is new to Charlotte. I ordered the Shrimp Po' Boy Sandwich and it was very disappointing. Very skimpy on the Shrimp(total of only 4 on the entire sandwich). The bread for the sandwich was a hoagie roll so you can imagine how bready it was w only 4 shrimp. I ate on one half of the sandwich and realized I was eating bread, lettuce and tomato. Got the attention of our waitress and let her know my issue(was not helpful or considerate at all). She then got the Mgr who was not considerate or helpful as well. The only thing she said she could offer me was half off the sandwich since I had eaten a good portion of one half of the sandwich. Not cool! She wanted me to pay half for the sandwich and then pay another amt for something else if I wanted to order! She def does not have managerial skills as she should have at least offered me to order something else that was the same amount as the sandwich and I would have been satisfied. Mgr and wait staff are not professional. They all seem to have attitudes!
My friend shared some of her Soul Rolls w me and they were pretty tasty. Pls take into consideration my review and all the bad reviews that have been posted within the last 1-2 months and get some training and better customer service people working for your corporation.
First let me say that this was the worst dining experience EVER! First me and my friend waited 20 mins for a drink order, then when our bread comes and we ask for silverware and the waitress(margaret) gives us attitude. Besides the bad service, the food was absolutely HORRIBLE! I had fried chicken, macaroni (worst i ever had) collard greens, and yams. Literally took a bite of each and was completey disgusted. When the waitress brought the check i asked why was i paying for food i did not eat and she proceeded to tell me just because i didnt like the food didnt mean anything and i would still have to pay . When the manager came over she said the same thing with a worse attitude. I will NEVER return to this place and would not advise it to my worse enemy . Paying $36 dollars for two disgusting meals is absolutely insane.
I use to love Mert's. The salmon patties were my favorite dish! Unfortunately poor management has greatly impacted this restaurant.
Upon entering the restaurant the hostess stated to my friend and I that we would get the next table available once it is clean off. A different hostess approached the stand with a unpleasant and abrasive demeanor. She stated to the gentleman that came in after us that his wait would be 50 minutes. That seemed odd.
She continued to state this to everyone who came in after us that their wait would be 50 minutes, as she wrote their name down on a sheet of printer paper (poor management skills #1).
When she questioned us about a table we stated that the other hostess said we would be get the next available table.
(This is when I realized I would NEVER go back to Mert's)
She proceeded to inform us in an unpleasant manner that if our name were not on the sheet of paper, we would not be getting the next table. My friend and I left the restaurant, but, I decided to return so that I could speak to a manager and talk about the incident that just occurred. Guest who the manger was...the hostess with the abrasive attitude. We stepped to the side where we talked about the manner in which she spoke to my friend and I was not necessary. She accused her upbringing in the "North" as the reason for her abrasive attitude.
When she said this, I knew that would be the last time I would even enter the place that I once loved.
I've been to Mert's two times and up until the very last moment of my second visit I would have given this restaurant a solid 5 start review. When I got my bill I noticed that they had charged me $14 for a waffle we ordered as a side to our breakfast. Thinking this was a simple mistake, that I had been charged for the waffle meal (which also includes pork chops and a side), I asked the waitress if she would correct the bill. After conferring with the manager she informed me that infact the waffle, a special item not listed on the menu, costs $14. At a restaurant where ribs, two generous sides and cornbread costs $13, I believed that charging $14 for a nothing-special waffle was insane. Upon telling this to the manager her response was to tell me that she would gladly take the waffle off my bill and charge it to the waitress as punishment for her not telling me the price. After expressing that I thought this was unfair and cruel to the waitress I paid the bill sans waffle and left a generous tip. I hope that this con is isolated to Kiana (the manager) and not the lovely waitresses. If you are going to eat here make sure you know how much your meal is going to cost.
Was out doing some shopping at the citadel and wanted something good to eat. Stumbled upon Mert's Heart & Soul. Will make it a regular stop. I ordered Mert's Heart & Soul Hungry Man (2 meats, 3 sides, drink) for $14.50 and left with lunch for tomorrow. Meat loaf work gravy was solid, fried chicken was the truth and made to order, yams were not the casserole style... So refreshing just to get some sweet buttery yams. Mac n cheese was like my wife's, and I didn't have to wait for thanksgiving for some good dressing. Had an Arnold Palmer to drink, crazy sweet, but the best that I've ever had, I needed water after but wanted more. When you go don't be in a rush, and don't go with more than 5 people if you are trying to eat there. Can't wait to go back!
This place is wonderful! I have been here twice by myself and had to bring my sisters the third time. The food is amazing. I've had the mac and cheese, greens, beans, chicken, dirty rice, and the cornbread is sooooo tasty! It is always packed when I visit and everybody is enjoying themselves.
I love the atmosphere of the restaurant and the food is great. The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is because of my carry out order. Not sure what was going on in the kitchen but the fries were cold and unseasoned and the chicken wasn't up to par. A bit disappointing since I always rave about this restaurant and was ordering for a friend who never had it. Other than that, I love it here.
Great place for some good southern cooking. Don't go if your on a diet but if your looking for great tasting fried food this is the place. I have to say the cornbread is incredible as well as the chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, chicken soup, and ribs.
This food was soo nasty. The mac and cheese was a big GLOP with no flavor. It tasted like fake government cheese. The greens were bitter with no flavor, and the chicken tasted old. I was so disappointed because the reviews on here were so good. And I'm from Chicago, so I know good food. This was trash!
I don't usually write poor reviews but this place is not worth the cost or the time.
Trying to save you from this.. unlike the Renaissance Festival, this place is not worth the disappointment.
My family and I ordered to go, they said it would take half an hour. We got there promptly half an hour later and still had to wait another half hour for our order. The service was bad, not one person came to ask even if I wanted a cup or water while I waited. Finally got home with the food excited to finally eat and the portions were so small, we all started looking for leftovers to heat up as well. I got the chicken tenders sides of mash potatoes and potato salad. The tenders were kids meal size for $13. Mash potatoes were bland, cornbread too. Only good thing I had was the potato salad and the soul rolls. Guy Fieri must have been paid off to say this place was good..or just had his taste buds removed.
The food is superb. Collard greens were my favorite.
Service is friendly - and the food is super cheap (coming from someone who's used to going out in Boston and NYC).
I would go here again and would recommend it for a neat little place with quality soul food and old-school-style decor and ambience.
Meets is the best place in Charlotte for soul food. Everything is great and the staff is the nicest
This place is the definition of good southern cooking. About everything they make is homemade including their amazing fried chicken and cornbread. Their service is awesome too! Will definitely come back!
This food was nasty i ordered the bbq ribs with a leg quarter with mac n cheese and cabbage and my wife ordered shrimp and grits, pintos and cabbage the chicken was not seasoned the cabbage wasnt either the shrimp and grits only had 2 shrimp in the container for 14 bucks.. the pintos flavoring was wayyy off and for the price it wasnt worth it 40 bucks waisted!
This is a great gem in our city. It's uptown in the heart of Charlotte. I wouldn't bring a party of 10 because it's not that large on the inside, or if you do I would call ahead to find out if they're busy at the time or not. It's kind of earthy on the inside as far as the walls and floors. The menu is definitely southern inspired. It's a mixture of "the south" & creole. I had the blackened salmon with rice and greens beans. I absolutely loved everything! My friends had the macaroni and cheese and it was the next best thing to your mother's. The Cornbread is buttermilk made...not hot water! The bread will fill you early so eat it last if you can. The only con is the tip is included in your bill. Our waitress wasn't as attentive as she should have been. She would get your request and walk away before you could finish with something else. I guess since the tip is included she didn't care, but she still had a great attitude. Maybe she was overwhelmed. Nevertheless you will enjoy your food!
I've been here multiple times and each time the service gets worse and worse. The lady that sat us had such an attitude. They have only two people waiting on tables. At least the waitress was nice but she can't do it all. Was hoping it would turn around but going down hill fast. Can tell when the owners are not here and the entire place becomes subpar. I'm writing the review as I sit here. It took 24 minutes to get a table yet nobody was in line and 8 tables open. Ordered food 38 min ago and still no food. The place isn't that busy that they should be this slow.
Food was NOT good. It was 4 of us, we each got a different entree. Only good thing was the catfish. Service was POOR. We were there 13 min before a waiter came to get drink order. Veggies had no seasoning, chicken was overcooked or cooked in old grease. Waiter took another 15 min to come over and run our credit cards. Terrible experience. I never have to go back.
Centrally located near epicenter. Decent food. Soul sampler was big enough for a meal. Soul roll and salmon cake and the corn bread was excellent. Chicken wings were very greasy and not good. Save room for the sweet potato cake. So good!
I ordered from this restaurant 3x and each time it was a waste...the Mac and cheese was over cooked with a burnt bottom, the rice is dry the food just honestly taste like its thrown together. I kept ordering because I'm a firm believer that everyone has a bad day but the quality is certainly not there. I hope you guys hire some better cooks to follow those recipes.
If I could give this place zero stars I would. I work in production at the Fillmore and I was ordering food for the band that came through town. When I called to make the order the lady on the phone was very short and rude with me. I asked her to label the containers with each band members name and she told me that that was impossible because there's no way you could write on the containers. Come to find out the containers are Styrofoam and a sharpie would have worked just fine. I had to label all of the items when I got there and as I was doing that she told me I needed to move my things so she could sit people at the table. She was absolutely horrible to me and treated me like I was a nuisance to her. Then I come to find out that she's the manager!!! What?! I immediately went back to the Fillmore (after receiving ZERO help to my car with 4 large bags of food) and took their menu out of our menu books. We will never order after show food or any food from this place again. You just lost a very valuable customer. You should be called Merts LOST heart and soul.
Soul combo platter with salmon cakes were great with remoulde sauce. The collard green egg rolls inside were delicious but I'm not a fan of honey mustard. Wished it was on the side. The fried chicken could've been drained better. Overall I enjoyed my experience and I would come back and try other dishes
Food is great, but don't go if you're trying to eat healthy or lose weight. If you enjoy southern or soul food, this is your spot. Try the redeck egg rolls. (I think that's what they're called.) Parking can be confusing. Park in the Holiday Inn parking deck and get your ticket stamped at Merts.
Simply don't understand the hype around this place. This was the first time I've ever just sent the whole plate back and ordered something completely different. The salmon cakes were horrible, the collards were so disappointing I still can't believe it. How can someone screw up collards?! Mashed potatoes had big chunks of potatoes mixed in that had a crunch to it. Kinda goes against me wanted MASHED potatoes ya know. To pay for parking, walk down and go to this hole-in-the-wall for that food...NEVER AGAIN!
This place is popular. Always packed when we go for lunch or dinner. Fantastic southern fare. The mac and cheese and cornbread top my list. But then there is so much more. The banana pudding is as good as grandmas. The decor and furnishings may seem tired and the lighting could be improved. But if you came for the food, you would leave happy.
Great mac and cheese, and really love their Salmon cakes and other specials. Is a tight space which brings me to the issue I've experienced which is you should never go back to work after lunch and have people able to tell where you ate based on how you are smelling. It's like the grease saturates your clothing and skin. I don't frequent as much now, but for the period I ate there about 2014-2016, once or twice a week, this would honestly be my biggest issue. Great cornbread though, and try to dessert cakes.
When I think soul food and low country, I think flavor! I think spicy! This was the BLANDEST meal! I got the Shrimp Creole with rice. The creole sauce was flavorless. Just kind of like a red sauce with onions thrown in. The seasoned rice was salty. That seemed to be the only seasoning used. Nothing about the dish was spicy. My boyfriend had the chicken tenders with sides of mashed potatoes and. mac and cheese. You can't really mess that up. Nothing about his dish was bad, but it was very mediocre. Well, the gravy was pretty good on the potatoes.
Service was okay, waited a little long for refills on empty drinks, and too many empty dishes and glasses were left on a very small 2 seater table.
We don't be back.
On my very first visit to Charlotte, my daughter made sure i sampled some down home southern soul food. And let me tell you...it was absolutely DELICIOUS! From appetizer to dessert! Especially that cornbread.. to die For! Almost melts in your mouth! As well the staff service was great!! I will be back❤
Great service and down home atmosphere! We were seated right away. Darlene took our order right away. I had the catfish with scambled eggs and grits. My wife had beef ribs with red beans and collard greens. Fish was crispy and seasoned just right. Ribs feel off the bone had just enough vinegar in the sauce that Caroline BBQ is known for. All the sides we're great as well. Sweet tea and an ice cold Heineken to top it off, made for a perfect meal.
Went with my son, my friend and her son.. seated and it took 15 minutes before we had to track down the hostess to put our drink orders in.. they use instant tea.. then after she begrudgingly bought our drinks, we NEVER got a waitress to our table. As we tried to track down someone to take our order, we spotted patrons that had been seated 20 minutes after is getting their order taken.. we got up and left after offering to pay for our drinks, the owner apologized but didn't make any effort to rectify the situation.. we left and went to a better soul food restaurant where the food was less expensive, better portions and much better customer service
Don't be fooled by the shabby look. This place is great. Friendly service and incredible food. Winston Salem style wings and the Carolina Pork Butts are up there with the best. Seriously good food, and Carolina Blond beer to wash it down. Unimprovable.
Price was right, portions adequate. As for the food, the Mac n Cheese had the right ratio of mac to cheese. The yams had nice flavor and good form. The side of cornbread was dense and tasty. The place would have been a 5 but the collard greens, even though they had outstanding flavor, were too salty. I will definitely try them again because it could have just been a heavy hand on this batch of collard greens.
Another delicious meal at Mert's! The cornbread is enough to fill up a rookie, but the vets know the cornbread is a mere preview of the goodness to come. There's nothing on the menu that's not delicious. My favs are the soul rolls, the salmon, the chicken is fried to perfection and don't get me started on the mac and cheese. Go for lunch & indulge, you can spend the rest of the day working off the calories! Be sure to tip well this is the nicest and hardest working wait staff!
Everything was delicious and seasoned to perfection! I tried the soul sampler with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese and my hubby had the jumbo chicken wings. The staff were friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was laid back and casual.
I am from Virginia beach va. I thought I was coming to get some good soul food. I was really disappointed. The greens were bitter and the food was just not good. I would not recommend this place to anyone I know. Charlotte was fun but this restaurant was not. Should not be classified as a soul food restaurant. Oops also ran out of Turkey wings.
The food was just okay for us. I expected better. The gentleman that served us was very professional. I had the salmon patties & my daughter had the the beef ribs. She enjoyed the ribs however the macaroni & cheese was very mushy & the candied yams seemed fried. We also had the soul rolls, they were way too greasy, not too flavorful ether. Definitely needs some improvement. Oh yeah be prepared to pay for parking also.
Food: good taste and reasonable proportions. I had the fish and dirty rice. Fish was great, rice was good but not my idea of dirty rice (ground beef was lacking). Fries Green Tomatoes appetizer was pretty good as well. The service left something to be desired. It was busy so will give some slack, but our waitress seemed overwhelmed. The kitchen had confusion and were barking at the wait staff because they were cooking too much or too little of certain dishes due to miscommunication. Our waitress spilled sweet tea on our table (and us), but was apologetic. I would give it another try - just wouldn't go out of my way to go there.
Had not been in many years before going with my wife last night. The service was the only good thing. I had salmon cakes, mac & cheese, and green beans. Wife has blackened pork chops, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. The salmon cakes were tasteless and dry, the mac & cheese wretched, and the green beans ordinarily bland. My wife enjoyed hers a bit more- still, far from anything to write home about.
I remember a much better experience the few times I dined at Merts before- granted, about ten years ago. Sorry, we won't be back.
I will say, if in Charlotte and want to try southern comfort food, go to this place. I always like to try their daily specials . They have a huge list of sides. My favorites, okra and collard greens. Also personal favorite friend chicken. They give corn bread with their entrees. One of the best corn breads I have eaten so far.
Everything we have eaten in Charlotte has been great. Until we ate at Mert’s Heart and Soul. The yams were poor tasting at best. I couldn’t wait to try southern fried chicken. It took one hour to deep fry a small tasteless chicken leg quarter. The salmon cake, beef ribs, and fried cat fish were good. Fried tomatoes, collard greens, chicken tenders, and home fries not so great. The cornbread was great and so was our waiter. The cornbread isn't worth the hour wait and so so food to go back.
Damn. How could I have lived and worked in the area this long have have this be my first visit? If you’re on the fence about visiting this place, just do it. You can not be disappointed. Amazingly delicious and great atmosphere.
Mert's serves southern fare. Collards, black eyed peas, and cornbread...all delicious. It's always crowded so come early and be prepared to wait. There were 4 in our party. It took forever for our drink order to be taken and then even longer for our orders to be taken. In all honesty, I think they only had 2 waiters on a Saturday night. Not sure why either. Anyway, the other 3 people in my party ordered good full plates of food. I ordered a blackened chicken salad (due to allergies not diet). Their plates were delivered but I had to wait an extra 10 minutes to get my salad. A salad! The chicken was good but honestly it was thrown together so fast that stuff was falling off my plate and not in a good way!
I'm sure we will go back but I won't be looking forward to it. On the other hand, my husband said his real food was delicious.
Bottom line... If you have allergies or are a picky eater this place may not be for you. If you love your food cooked like Granny then this is a must while in Charlotte.
Small and friendly restaurant in uptown Charlotte. The place is decorated with nostalgic pictures and antique memorabilia from different stars. The menu was not extensive and easy to read. They also post specials on a chalk board near the kitchen.
The food was pretty good, the cornbread was delicious and the cakes were mouthwatering. People in my party ordered the ribs, that had no bones and a little too much sauce. The salmon cakes were fried just right and tasty, no overwhelming flavors. The fried chicken was moist and juicy. The sides were also good and they had a good selection of veggies.
Parking is a challenge especially if you have issues walking. I was lucky to find a pay to park spot in front of Mert's. If you are in a wheelchair it may take some manuvering inside the restaurant due to tables being so close.
Overall I recommend Mert's if you want to eat soul food this is a great place to start.
My wife and I was here for VFW National Convention, we saw this place on Diners Drive Inn and Dives show, The Place is down the street from the hotel and we went in and was seated. The Young lady that waited on us was very friendly. The food is worth the wait. I had shrimp and grits and my wife had the chicken greens. I want to say even I came back that evening and dinner and the food was great again. If there is anything wrong was the restroom, I have to say Brother Mert please you need upgrade the restrooms. That is only reason I did not give it five stars. I have to say when your in Charlotte please stop in and try the food you will not be disappointed.
First time here. The cornbread was moist but not very sweet. The yams were undercooked and not seasoned well. However the beer ribs were amazing! Very tender and the sauce was by far the best bbq sauce I've had. For dessert I would recommend the banana pudding. Tastes almost as good as grandma's. The actual restaurant is a bit cramped inside and HOT. Overall experience was ok.
Prices were reasonable.
Food didn’t take long( for a full plated restaurant)
Complimentary corn bread was melt in your mouth good.
Best sweet tea I had in a while!
I got the sweet and spicy ribs, steamed Okra and Mac and cheese.
I will be coming back soon. If you are visiting Charlotte, put this place on your list!
I love visiting Mert's when I'm in town!! The Mom and Pop diner shows a comfy and cozy atmosphere! Very family oriented and great on first dates. Every one is nice! The food is amazing! I think someone's grandmother is in the kitchen cooking. My favorite dish are the beef ribs and macaroni and cheese with fresh collard greens! Makes you want to slap your Mama! Did I mention they have homemade poundcakes?!!!
I give it 3 stars. The food was pretty good. Definitely over priced. We ordered unlimited mimosas for17.00. Our waiter did a great job on the first ones. After that they were slack. I told the manager and she said that’s their guidelines on drinks...pouring one third of the glass and the rest orange juice. But then I see a waitress come up and fill 5 glasses half full of champagne not one third like we got. I can go to another establishment and get more with a less price. We won’t be back.
This is an experience. Don't be in rush to eat as depending on the day and possibly the time it may take a little longer than expected to get served. With that said the staff was pleasant and on point. The food is everything. Great selection of southern sides like Mac and cheese along with corn bread and okra.
This place is worth a second visit as the fridge chicken with hot sauce is one way but now I have to try it without the hot sauce.
Food was tasty however could have been more of an experience if it was hotter! Greens had a bit too much vinegar and a bit of extra seasoning on the chicken would have been awesome! The cake selection was amazing however no complaints! Overall I would recommend!
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was comforting until I saw roaches. When our waiter was alerted, the manager gave a smart remark. When we asked to speak to the manager, she argued with us and was extremely rude. She advised that her staff can handle all situations and she was not needed. We even had to tell her we wanted a discount or we would walk out. We were still met with rudeness. If the food hadn't been mostly consumed, I wouldn't have paid for anything. I would never give them my money again.
We ate there for brunch on a Sunday. Overall, our party of five adults and one child enjoyed the experience. Casual atmosphere. Wait staff was pleasant and attentive. Meals included fried whiting, BBQ ribs and spinach omelette with sides (home fries, cabbage, black eyed peas, Mac/cheese, collards greens) and choice of biscuit or cornbread. Portions were more than sufficient, but some dishes were not well seasoned. Specifically, the home fries and omelette. There was an issue with one order but it was quickly resolved and the meal complimentary due to the inconvenience. Validated parking is available in the Holiday Inn garage.
Delicious food and amazing service! We had a group of over 20 and our server was incredible. I had a veggie plate with macaroni and cheese, potato salad, green beans, and yams. The macaroni and cheese was my favorite but it was all so good. I’m already planning to come back (and need to plan ahead so I have room for dessert because they look amazing)!
The food was fabulous. Probably one of the best Grilled 1/2 chickens I ever had. The food came out super fast, probably less than 5 minutes. The 4 stars was because we had to wait a long time after we got our food until the server came back. She was nice, but she didn't visit often. She never asked if we wanted more to drink. It also took her at least 15 minutes to pick up the check and my CC payment. This would have been 5 stars. I will eat here again because the food was amazing.
Absolutely. Love. This. Place! Anytime I am in the Uptown area, I walk over to Mert's. I have never had anything bad here or bad service. The Soul Rolls are my go to for a quick lunch or appetizer. They are so flavorful! The jerk seasoning for the BBQ is a great complement. Small, cozy cafe with a small, but wide range menu. Country comfort foods, a taste of the bayou and some seafood. They also give you the softest, semi-sweet corn bread with sweet cream butter. Mm mm good!
A must try if you're in Charlotte. My boyfriend and I went here on a whim for lunch and we're not disappointed. There service was great, the portions are hearty and the food is so very good. I had the fried catfish with collards and Mac and cheese. So good! All the dishes come with cornbread as well that is deliciously sweet!
Had a great meal. Really enjoyed the food. The place was akso very busy which is a good sign. However the waiting staff were overloaded, and service suffered. I'd definitely go back though! So many nice things to eat.
The food here is no good. My husband got his soup it was cold and when we informed staff they offered to put it in the microwave and heat it up. Nothing had any flavor so we ended up leaving but I did leave the waiter a tip because she was so sweet and it's not her fault the food is no good. People shouldn't consider this as soul food when the majority of customers don't know what true soul food is or taste like.
Fabulous eats! Cornbread served hot right out of the oven. Nice menu selection to comfort any soul. The cube steak special this day was oh so tender and the okra fried to perfection retaining all its good flavor. The whiting po boy was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And the mac and cheese better than mama's. You won't be disappointed by the service or food selections. Everything was superb.
Visiting from out of town and someone suggested Mert's. I'm not a big soulfood eater so I didn't know what to expect. I ordered the catfish which I loved but I was not too fond of the sides, mac n cheese and yams. Someone in my party ordered the chicken wings and they were pretty good. The food reminded me of a your friends aunt's cooking... not my aunts cooking but still edible, but nothing to brag home to momma about. I will save the service and hospitality was A1. I would go back for that catfish
I really enjoyed the individual cornbread loaf. I'm not usually a fan of cornbread, but this was great. They had several specials of the day when we were there. My mom loved the turkey wings with gravy and I liked the salmon cakes that I had. The food item that everyone should try at least once is the soul role. That is the BEST.
I would like to openly give thanks. My family and I have been displaced due to hurricane Florence. Our funds have been exhausted due to expenses for hotel, food and gas. This restaurant open up their doors for an entire family of 8 and fed us without charging us.We went to other local restaurants in this city and they turned us away. From the bottom of our heart we express our sincere gratitude. Thank you, thank you and thank you. We pray that God will continue to bless your business abundantly.
On Another Note: The food was absolutely amazing.
Yes, yes, yes. The food was delicious. The portions were huge. Not many restaurants serve all beef ribs. Mert's ribs are fall off the bone tender. The cornbread was hot and fresh-straight out of the oven. Our server(I can't remember his name) was friendly. We were greeted with a smile and he kept checking on our table. Excellent food and service.
This is my second time eating at this restaurant, while visiting Charlotte. My first experience was great! However, this last time left a little disappointment.
We have a great waiter, he was attentive and informative. He is the reason why this post received the 3rd star.
I gave 2 stars for the food. I ordered 2 servings of beef ribs. One serving was pretty good and the second serving was completely charred- covered in BBQ. My daughter was completely turned off. We expressed our concerns to our waited. He promptly removed the dish and offered to replace. However, she and I just shared my plate.
Other than that- the meal was pretty good.
Our family was displaced due to hurricane Florence. We have been in Charlotte for 4 days. We have no idea when we can get back home to Jacksonville NC. We ran out of money on hotels. We were hungry so we called several locations and was turned down. Mert’s was the only place to bless us and feed us. On top of them being so gracious to feed us, the food was excellent. I will forever be grateful to this establishment for helping us in our time of need. I pray that they are blessed beyond measure for what they have done for my family.
Apparently I did not know what to order. The cornbread was good. Those fried roll was not that good. The shrimp and grits were alright. Nothing to write home to mom about. The fried whiting , Mac cheese and cabbage were good. Collard had no flavor. Tea was very good. The cakes looked very good. Asked the waitress about the specials first. I wished I did. Food network need to remove this from their website for best restaurants in Charlotte, NC.
Food was dry. Really dry. Some parts of the pulled pork I couldn't swallow because it was so dry. Green beans and mac and cheese isn't bad though. I was recommended by a friend so I will try it again and if it is better then I will change the score.
I am hoping that my experience is not typical of the place.
Edit: have not tried it again. When I try them I'll change.
Cornbread was great. Food was fresh. The server, Diamond thought my food took too long to come out, so she gave me a free piece a cake to make up. Prices are reasonable. I will be back the next time I'm in Uptown.
If you like soul food, this is a good place. Very flavorful dishes overall, super casual environment, friendly staff, and great location in Uptown.
I tried the creole shrimp + fried catfish combo. They also give you a small loaf of sweet cornbread; very moist and delicious. There was so much food I boxed up half for later. My friends all seemed to enjoy their meals, as well. Our server was super nice and took great care of us throughout the meal. No wait for a table and food was prepped and delivered in a timely manner; not too shabby for a post-Sunday church crowd.
The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is my creole shrimp had only 4 very small shrimp in it. I was really surprised at that. The flavor of the stewed veggies over rice was great but not what I paid $18 for. I would also agree with other reviewers that their mac & cheese is not great. It's not bad, though! Just average, which is a shame since I would expect to get a solid mac & cheese in a place like this. It was fine as a compliment to my meal but I would not go out of my way to order it.
Side note: As with any Uptown establishment, parking is a challenge during the workday and on Sundays (street parking full from churchgoers), so I recommend going in the evening or daytime Saturday. Otherwise, you'll pay $$$ to park.
Awesome place for comfort and southern style food in uptown Charlotte. The decor inside is unique, featuring an African American style and signed pictures of notable figures that dined here while in Charlotte. Main courses at lunch and dinner are delicious and come with Mert's sweet corn bread. Breakfast is the best in town! They also feature many home made cakes and deserts.
During this visit, I enjoyed the Shrimp Creole! It was absolutely to die for! Everything was very fresh and reflected Mert's unique style. It was spicy but not overpowering. A picture is provided below.
I try to visit Mert's each time I go to Charlotte!
First time coming to this place and I lived in Charlotte for over four years now. Anytime I see a restaurant that’s uptown via google search I know it will be a pain finding a parking spot. So I circled around the restaurant for potential parking spot that’s close to it but course it’s always a hassle in uptown Charlotte finding a parking spot. We end up finding a parking lot that was nearby and paid $8 for parking and then walking to the restaurant. I ordered salmon w/ creole sauce with two sides collard greens and potato salad. Corn roll was good no complaints there not dried which is good. The food was really good. I am a collards green lover and their greens are really good! I love how leafy it looks rather than smashed looking like it came from a can. I had ordered it twice because it was that good! Potato salad taste really good! Salmon was a bit dried but I like it. Our waitor was very friendly and he was attentive! He didn’t rush us to get out and told us to take our time. Food is affordable. Overall I like the place and I will be back again but downfall is having to find a parking spot. Great for carpool but if u plan to have a big gathering finding a spot is rough for everybody.
The Soul Sampler changed my life! Chicken wings were friend crisp and seasoned perfectly, soul rolls are a must try it's a soulfood egg roll! And the corn bread was the bow on top. I love this place I will be back!! Thumbs up to our server Jordan, friendly and helpful.
We were in Charlotte for a play and heard about Mert’s from a local business woman. What a great find. I ordered their famous salmon cakes. They were wonderful and reminded me of the salmon patties my mother used to make when I was a kid. One of my dining companions order the ribs and said they were the best she’d ever had. Another companion was thrilled with her macaroni and cheese. And another companion had a four veggie plate meal which she loved. I wish my meal had not filled me up because they had the most beautiful cakes I’ve ever seen. I think it might be worth a trip back just to have desert. If they’d been open after the play we would have gone back for a slice of one of those cakes. Prices are unbelievably low and the service is excellent. Great atmosphere. Oh yeah...I almost forgot about the cornbread. Each of us got our own mini loaf of the most amazing cornbread.
I ordered the bbq beef rib and fried catfish combo, which were both delicious. The ribs were very tender off the bone and the sauce had a sour flavour that gave it a good kick. The catfish wasn't greasy at all and was easy to eat with the tar tar sauce. The sides collard greens and mac and cheese were delicious as well. Last but not least, great service!
had no problem with the street parking.
service was prompted, courteous, and great. food is yummy, portion is large. price's right.
