How would you rate Jambo Cafe?
We wanted to try something different than the usual Mexican or Italian restaurant and this place delivered. Wonderful combination of spices and different flavors. The stuffed phyllo was an awesome combination of flavors. Best coconut banana cream pie. Loved how the Chef and owner was out engaging with customers; and also his efforts in giving back through his charity. This place is truly one of a kind and we wish we had one back home!
The food is good an unique. I had never eaten any food from this continent and wanted to try this restaurant. The food resembles Indian/Pakistan cuisines. I got goat stew and my wife had rice with chicken. We liked the food but there was nothing special about the food, the goat soup needed a little more red pepper. I really like trying different food, and I might go here again to try different things and I will edit my post to see if how will I like other things here.
I ate here while visiting New Mexico from Toronto in December. One of the BEST meals I've ever had! I had the Island Spice Coconut Peanut Chicken Stew and it was absolutely delicious. The Cinnamon Dusted Plantains were also divine. Thank you for a tasty meal!
What can I say? As soon as I took my first bite, I felt like I was falling in love and falling out of love all at the same time. Oh the emotions! It was like, running on a beach in a white silk dress, embraced by the arms of an old lover. The flavours captivated my soul, my entire being. I understood the meaning of life. I traveled through time and space, through rivers, streams, and oceans. I cursed in foreign tongues. The presentation was beautiful with such a delightful taste. All I could do was shut my eyes and let the food take me on a journey of self-reflection. Oh what a time to be alive! At the end of the meal, I was devastated that it had come to an end. The food had entrapped me in warmth and joy and I walked away jubilant, with the best thing that I have ever known in my belly.
It was our first time in the restaurant. The food was amazing. We ordered a beef kabab and a lamp stew. Specially i love the stew. Food delivered in shortest time. The service was great. Hope to back there as soon as possible.
Horrible service, meanest waitresses ever. Food was okay, simple atmosphere. Awful experience.
Delicious! I got the East African lentil stew with coconut rice on the side, which was a good choice since I was in a hurry. They were able to plate very quickly, and the food was so delicately nuanced in its flavors. Also, the tables each have 3 different kinds of hot sauces on them (none of which are as hot as the labels had me believing - "Hell Hot" was more like a 97 degree summer day. However, the taste of these sauces was also a treat.
This place a great customer service. The food was not bad. Well seasoned. I highly recommend trying the curry goat. Its delicious.
Good food for the most part, weird location (shopping center) but they manage to block it out and make it cozy inside. We had a good waiter until shift change when he was replaced by a rude girl. The only other complaint would be it seemed someone had spilled dish soap on the roti we were served and I got an unpleasant mouthful.
The food is amazing here! Jose gave us exceptional service.
The décor is very cool.
This is the best restaurant and dinning experience I have experienced in years.
My boyfriend and I went there in April. Although the food was really good, actually I can say that the food was great! But the chef looked at me and my boyfriend as if we were both aliens (?) Maybe he was having a bad day, Might try again, but I won't drive all the way to Santa Fe for it.
The Safari Grill is also amazing and much closer!! For whatever reason, this review was removed from Yelp. Stating that I did not provide enough detail? So here is more detail. I am white, my boyfriend is mixed (black/white) The chef is African and from most reviews comes out and speaks to many of the customers. That day my boyfriend was the only non-white customer and the chef literally looked at him as if he were an alien.
Again, the food was spot on, but I will not drive all the way to Santa Fe when the Safari Grill on the West side not only serves amazing food, but also treated both of us with kindness.
The food is excellent! My friends and I had a great meal, and a friendly chat with the owner. He seemed to be stopping by every table to greet guests, serve food, and just have a laugh or two.
The restaurant smells amazing when you walk in, but luckily you don't have long to wait before your food comes out after you are seated. We tried the island peanut curry, the kebabs, and the lamb sandwich, and all of the dishes were spiced perfectly.
I highly recommend Jambo Cafe! Try to make a reservation, because the wait can be a half hour or more when it is busy.
They had great service, the server we had new a lot about each dish and was able to help us find dishes we both would like on there quite amazing menu. Also there expo manager came put and gave us tips on the dishes and when the appetizer and dinner came out it was amazing. Will definitely go back to try again.
Jambo was my first exposure to African food so I can't compare it to much but WOW! Went twice in the one week I spent in town; would be there all the time if I lived nearby. The cinnamon plantains in the picture were excellent, as was the curried chicken salad wrap (it made great leftovers, too), and the lentil soup.
Can't recommend it enough.
Overpriced. Always busy and full of college kids. Food is ok, fluctuates with each visit. Not a bad place, but definitely leaves me unimpressed.
What an awesome find in Santa Fe! Such an amazing selection of African dishes that are truly wonderful at a very reasonable price (even Morgan Freeman thinks so - he stopped in while filming a while back). I highly recommend this place if you'd like a little something different from the chili pepper saturated SW.
Very delicious foods! Nice presentation! Good and friendly service 👍 Affordable! The flavors bursted in my mouth like a fun party!
Ahmed is the best chef I've ever met. He deeply cares about his customers. I cannot describe my positive experience in words. The food is amazing and staff are friendly. The highest quality of Afro foods in southwest are served here.
Fantastic food! Everything we had was very approachable but offered a completely unique flavor profile that was new to both of us. The restaurant is laid-back but bustling with authentic African decorations on all the walls. The restaurant also supports a kids charity, so you can feel good about eating there knowing you're not just supporting a worthwhile restaurant itself, but the children of Kenya.
Great themed indoor decor.... you never know this restaurant was in a strip mall. Excellent food: (restaurant week) black bean, sweet potato, Curry Soup, Nut crusted Rockfish over black rice with sauteed vegetables, followed by mango cobbler and Vanilla Ice Cream. Great customer service, friendly people...highly recommend!
One of my favorites in Santa Fe - I always bring visitors here. Sometimes I just close my eyes and point to the menu and order. It is always good. Chef Ahmed is dedicated, friendly and always makes time to come say hello to his loyal customers (and there are many!). The atmosphere is beautiful, happy and relaxed. I've known people who have worked for Jambo and they love it. I'm told it's a very relaxed working atmosphere, even though the service is good. Nobody is running around afraid to be yelled at if they're not fast enough. And finally the music is great too 🎵
Delicious food with fresh carribean twist. Timely service. Try a little of everything with the combination plate. One of my favorites in Santa Fe!
I'm from Colorado, but even having visited handfuls of Santa Fe's top spots, this place is hands-down my favorite. Odd, considering how many highly awarded spots are in this town and that many would fall along the lines of local New Mexican cuisine (not gonna lie, sopapillas are great). But the food is authentically flavorful and never disappoints. Ever. Try everything!!
Cozy environment, the waiters are very polite and sincere. We ordered Tamarind and Mango lemonade, it was meh. My friend really loved his fresh coconut. We had Lamb curry, chicken kebab and coconut chicken curry. So far the lamb curry won the table. We loved the fresh baked Roti. Nice little place to hangout with friends with good food. Recommend it.
This place is awesome. The worker's are amazing. As soon as you walk in the smell draws you even more in. Food is delicious 😊
Waited to be seated for 45 mins then as we were being seated they gave our table away as we're walking to our table. So they apologized and we waited again only to be seated to a table with dirty plates and it wasn't ready yet. Tried to stay upbeat but the smell of the food was just not inviting. Trying to still stay upbeat even after we were ignored right after being seated. Waited 20 minutes to get our drinks and food order only after the waitress ignored us. So after I flagged down a waiter two tables down he finally took our order only to give us an annoyed vibe for some reason. The food came out cold and luke warm. Waiter never came to check on us and we had to get up to ask for our check. Very disappointed!! The table next to us was upset since they haven't gotten their food and we came after they did. They eventually left right before we did. Poor service and poor attitudes of staff and the food was horrible. I am officially sick with an upset stomach and a gross after taste, not too sure if that's because of the food or the service, probably was both. Wouldn't give any stars.
Really great place. Fantastic chef and owner (pretty sure its the same guy) and very friendly and attentive staff. Always fantastic food. I highly recommend this place. Don't skip this local gem. It's worth the price, the wait, all of it. It's damn good food. 👍
The service has gotten pretty lax since the reopening in Santa Fe. We were seated by a very nice young lady but our waiter was okay taking our order and then we did not see him again until we asked for water refills. After that he seemed to ignore our table and we did not see him again. I love the jerk chicken sandwich nut it is not worth our returning to be snubbed by the waiters.
We were excited to try this place. Sadly, the night we picked the service was off. The host seemed to be more interested in his phone and dancing than be attentive to guests. Also, our server seemed to be over being at work.
That said, the food was very tasty. We ordered the coconut chicken curry and the goat stew. Both were delicious and sizeable.
Plantains are the best. You can't skip them if going for appetizers. Everything I've tried is always delicious. Nice service and quick response. Recommended to make reservations if going weekends.
Can’t say enough good about this place. Awesome food! Great staff! They even have a store 2 doors down to buy their spices, cookbooks and gifts.
Love this place. If you are in Santa Fe and don't come here you are missing something very special. The Lamb Stew is our favorite but everything we have had has been wonderful.
My friend and I ordered through dashing delivery not realizing how late it was.. about 15 minutes to closing. We had been packing and moving stuff all day.
Anyway, we were scared that everything would be a mess, but they packaged it up well and everything was hot.
All of the food we ordered (plantains, coconut tofu, lentil soup, rice, pecan pie and pumpkin flan) was delicious and super tasty and we'll seasoned. Honestly one of the best pieces of pecan pie that I have ever had.
We feel bad for ordering so late, but thanks so much for having consistent service and amazing food.
Maybe that lady who ran through the front was just trying to get to the pie faster.
Delicious break from the common everyday meal. The succulent combination of fruits, spices and meats were a delightful experience. Jambo cafe is the place you cannot miss when you visit Santa Fe.
With all the amazing cuisine in Santa Fe, it's always a hard choice deciding what to eat when I visit. That being said, I've never missed a chance to visit Jambo. This place is phenomenal in every aspect. The fusion of cuisine here is remarkably unique and works in a way that is almost uncanny. Do yourself a favor if you're in the area and drop by!
I've been to Jombo several times. This is a great place to eat. The ambiance is very nice. The service is very good. And the food is GREAT. Do CHECK it out.
With a Swahili name I expected East African food. I did not see even West African food but Mediterranean food from Morocco and it was not very good Mediterranean food. For example I got the hummus sandwich which had a plentiful amount of goat cheese but about 2 teaspoonsful of hummus
The subtitle to the name includes Caribbean food. I I will admit that I was looking for vegan or vegetarian entrees and did not carefully read anything else. However if the so-called African food Falls as short as it did I cannot imagine the Caribbean food being any better. I just moved back after 40 years, have eaten at African restaurants, and will never return to Jambo.
The name is dishonest and the food just doesn't meet the mark. People of Santa Fe have been duped for several years.
Staff is wonderful. Food outstanding, only thing could be better is more beer choices on tap. But that is so minor. Def top 2 restaurants in NM
Always amazing food. I've been coming here for the last two years and, I try something new every time. Without fail it is delicious!! I have yet to come across anything I didn't like, and always cooked to perfection 💕💯
Had a great lunch! Jambo never disappoints. Every dish is always fresh and delicious. Cool little atmosphere feels cozy and welcoming.
We went in for lunch and our server Joules was honestly horrible. I always enjoy the food and there was nothing wrong with it, but when we gave our order he rudely interrupted to say he didn’t have a notepad, after receiving the appetizer I wanted ketchup so we turned to get his attention which was completely useless since he wasn’t paying attention and eating while on his phone at a nearby table, when he looked up we flagged him down to ask, and he looked at us and completely ignored us, I ended up having to ask another server. He didn’t pay attention to us for the rest of our stay. He was just super inattentive and I’m super unhappy with our service. I’ve never had a complaint, but honestly he shouldn’t be a server.
This restaurant was recommended to us by a local during our visit to Santa Fe. We almost didn't go, because it's in a strip mall. Let me assure you that choosing another restaurant would have been a tremendous mistake. This is one of the best restaurants at which my wife and I have eaten.
As soon as you walk through the door, it becomes clear that Jambo is a local favorite. Jambo has a quiet, yet busy, atmosphere with staff who works quickly and professionally.
The menu offers a plethora of items for any appetite and is reasonably priced. When the food promptly arrives, you will be only moments away from enjoying some of the best food in Santa Fe (or beyond).Try the coconut shrimp, curry and sweet potato soup, and beef kabobs.
Jambo is our go-to spot. Great food, fantastic people and quick service. I love this place!
First time in New Mexico and after a long trip back from White Sands (which I highly recommend), I was ready to eat some good food. I enjoyed the service, the menu's many offering and the cultural décor. The hibiscus tea (served hot), the cassava as a starter and the Kenyan entrée would be my recommendation. I found out about this place thanks to the owner of the Christmas shop in Old Town ABQ.
Wow. Just wow. The food was AMAZING. Out quick and did not disappoint. I lived in Santa fe my whole life (28) and didn't know how much I missed out for so long. Food is great. Only thing was I felt that the waiter wasn't friendly. But I came to eat not make friends. Tip the cook.
I visited Santa Fe for a few days to see some friends that recently moved there. This was the first meal I had when I landed in the city and wow. I was blown away.
First of all, the roti with their sauce (I think it's pineapple based) is delicious. Their plantains with the same sauce is very tasty as well. We ordered family style so I was able to taste a few different types of curry. All I know is there was chicken involved and it was so good we had to come back and eat at Jambo again.
I live in New York and have only been to Santa Fe for a few days. However, I felt compelled to write this review because I find myself daydreaming about this food on a daily basis. I hope to visit Santa Fe again and have some more of that delectable roti.
Came here while on vacation and the food is some of the best food I have ever eaten at a reasonable price for the quality. I ordered the Pili Pili shrimp and the shrimp was the best cooked shrimp I have ever had. I tried my friend’s food and everything was cooked to perfection and delicious. The plating on everything was also beautiful. Our server was great and very knowledgeable about the food. The atmosphere is also wonderful. It was so good that we actually came back the day after before we left town and it was just as great as the first time. You can’t go wrong with anything you order, and you’re making a big mistake if you don’t eat here.
The service and food is great. I had the vegetarian sandwich and my partner had the tofu curry. We were traveling from MN, and passing through Santa Fe, our waiter took the time to write us a list of things to do in Santa Fe. It was all around a great experience.
THE BEST CHICKEN CURRY I HAVE EVER TASTED. My fiance and I decided to stop pass here because it was on the tv show Diners Drive ins and Dives and we were not disappointed. The food was to die for. The atmosphere was cool and low key. I would definitely go back whenever I'm in New Mexico.
Beautiful food. Lovely staff. Decent sized portions but a nice focus on flavour over quantity. The coconut shrimp is so, so good.
Small place in a strip mall, but the food is SO delicious! Staff is friendly. If I’m ever back in town, I’d definitely return to try other dishes! (Pictured: coconut shrimp, combo plate, and chicken curry.)
You won't easily find food like this elsewhere. This place has a great vibe and food is excellent. The service is great every time as well. Definitely get a dish with the jerk chicken. You'll be thoroughly pleased.
Extensive menu including chicken, lamb and goat entrees. Vegetarian dishes available.
I enjoyed the fresh coconut drink in shell. Very tropical. Excellent service.
Well I had my doubts coming into the restaurant ... but one of the best meals ever! My harissa lamb sandwich was incredible, my wifes
Salmon was cooked perfectly and top quality! They took care of her food sensitivities and gave her an outstanding meal! Highly recommend!!
Great place to go for African and Caribbean food. There is one restaurant in Santa Fe and the other in the Albuquerque. We went to the one in Santa Fe, which was the smaller of the two restaurants from what we were told by one of the employees. People working there are very nice and get your food out fast. The food is so delicious. Would definitely come back again.
My husband, and I are from out of state in Wyoming, we went here for dinner tonight for our honeymoon, and I have nothing but amazing things to say about this place. It was the 1st time I had ever tried African food. My husband and were highly impressed with this restaurant. The servers were extremely pleasant, super helpful with suggesting what sounded good for food. The owner came out and chat for a few minutes with each table that was there, he was extremly friendly. Next time we're in Santa Fe we're coming back to try more amazing food.
This place! Really cannot say enough good things about it. The food is fantastic, wonderful blends of spices, rich sauces and exotic flavors. Caribbean meets Africa. You will not be sorry that you came here. Service can be uneven at times, but people are friendly and it is so worth the wait. Check out their import store three doors down. A delight to experience.
The food here is creative and we'll executed. The prices are reasonable, and there is a kids menu as well. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable with a hip vibe. We tried the tamarind drink which was tangy and refreshing. I had the Mahi Mahi cooked in banana leaves, served with forbidden black rice, and a mango sauce. This dish was a well planned array of flavors that complemented each other perfectly. I Walked down to the Jambo Imports shop, after I ate, and picked up a cookbook and some spices. The shop is also reasonably priced and offers some unique items.
Excellent service, fabulous food. It is more expensive and different than normal American fare from chain restaurants but completely worth it. We went to Jambo on the advice of the locals. Sadly the restaurant was out of coconuts, so no coconut milk to drink. However, the food was delicious, there is just not enough words to describe it. Our servers were so friendly and helpful! The wait staff and cooks were especially vigilant with the food prep with allergy concerns in mind, taking care to avoid even accidental cross contamination.
Exceptional food! The flavors were unreal! Loved our experience here. Jambo has vegan options here and the staff were great about ensuring that there were no eggs or dairy in my meal. Highly recommend checking this place out.
Was in Santa Fe doing a little shopping and wanted to grab lunch. Trip advisor and figure both head great reviews and being from the East coast I was looking for something other than one of the 20 million New Mexican restaurants in the area. I was pleasantly surprised this place met my expectations. Great food and great service. Definitely will be back.
Always our favorite do to place for amazingly flavorful food at great prices and a comfy cozy atmosphere. You can't go wrong at Jambo. And we love to set their food truck at events too!
For us, didn't live up to the hype. But we come from a place with great Caribbean food. But it was good nonetheless.
Loved this place, even if housed on some uninspiring strip mall. Easy to get to I guess.
Really friendly and accommodating staff. It gets busy so try to get there early or call ahead. They will take your number and call you when your table is ready
Recommend the combo platter so you can try a bit of everything (swap out the menu lentils
and choose 3 meats with rice and bread!!£
I am a huge fan of authentic African and Caribbean cuisine. Having meals cooked from African immigrants is an enjoyable experience that we don't often get here in New Mexico. However, this restaurant did not provide that experience. The food was overpriced. It tasted just fine. Go for the popular and less expensive item menus. Don't waste your time on the expensive plates.
I was surprised at how delicious the food is here. Really superb East African food spiced with Caribbean and South Asian influences. Great atmosphere and friendly, efficient service. Will certainly be back for more!
The food here is just delicious, we got the coconut chicken curry and the crab cakes and they were so incredibly good. I also loved the mango ginger lemonade. Definitely would recommend visiting this restaurant.
Excellent North African Cuisine. The jerk chicken wings and chicken curry wrap are excellent at lunch. The peanut chicken stew is great at dinner. This is not fast food so take the time to savor the experience. Highly recommended.
Wild rice wasn't cooked all the way through, it was like eating a bunch of pebbles. And they said that's how it's cooked... I don't think so! Being a culinary arts grad, I would know.
Service was great, atmosphere was casual (nice after coming off of the mountain). Food was good, not stellar. I tried the sampler (pictured) and the lamb wrap. Sampler was nice and flavorful, the wrap was awful... Ate 2 bites to give it a fair shake, but no luck
Nestled in the college plaza strip mall between office depot and ace hardware one does not expect exotic African fare of exceptional quality. Immediately upon entering the well shaded and heavily decorated interior I was treated to the fine scents of many exotic foods and drinks. i recommend everything, though I did not get to try it all. The juices are especially interesting and delicious.
This place had a great vibe. It was very cold the food was delicious and the ambiance was great. We loved the chai tea which was very tasty and had a spicy finish. The food was great and in line with most food cost for lunch meal. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody who's interested in African and Caribbean foods.
Quaint but lacking. Nice African vibe, but lacking the little extra to make it really special. Jerk chicken sandwich was good, lots of chicken, good spice...but the meat was very dry. They served it with sauce on top to make up for it, but it only made the pocketless pita soggy and it tore at the beginning of the meal. Flavors are good, but not quite 4-star.
DELICIOUS! This was a great find. So glad we came. Food came quickly and hot. Flavors were varied and amazing. Large portions. Nice presentation.
This was our second time to Santa Fe and I wish we had found this place on our first trip. The food is so delicious and has incredible flavor. The staff is friendly and are passionate about what they do. Every dish we tried was delicious and offered a unique taste. Definitely the first food place to try when visiting Santa Fe. I will definitely be back!
Jambo never disappoints. Today we had their special rock fish, shrimp and rice dish. Wow!!!! The flavor and creation was delicious. The staff is always happy, joyful and friendly. You may want to make reservations or expect a short wait, this suggestion is for lunch and dinner. Jambo is definitely one of the best cuisines in Sant Fe.
As a Nigerian I give this establishment 5 stars for the food and for the ambiance and service. I asked for the plantains without the cinnamon and started eating them before I took a picture. The jerk chicken wings were massacred before I remembered I was a Google guide. My goat stew was great and my partners chicken kabobs were good as well. We wished the dipping sauce was for sale but we went next door and purchased some spices before leaving. I will definitely eat here again the next time I’m in Santa Fe!
This is a fun, unique and tasty little restaurant. There's really nothing else like it here in Santa Fe. The atmosphere and decor are an integral part of the African dining experience.
The menu offers interesting choices. I usually get the phyllo appetizer which is a great vegetarian option. The salmon salad is delicious as well if you are looking for a lighter option.
It can get packed at prime hours, and the space is tight, but it's worth it.
This place was really good. The staff are friendly and the food is amazing. The shop next door is worth a look around as well.
I love their food but my spouse can't eat there because they have a lot of coconut and pineapple stuff and she's allergic. I miss them! Great food choice for new visitors to Santa Fe. Fantastic food.
If you’re in adventure to try other non-Mexican food in Santa Fe NM, the Jambo Cafe African cuisine in Cerrillos Road is a must! The combined aroma and rich flavor from the east Asia and Africa makes this place a popular choice for locals and visitors.
When traveling through the Heart of the Southwest it's nice to deviate off course from a cuisine perspective.
