How would you rate Island Krave Caribbean Bistro?
I so wanted a beef patty with coco bread and tried this place :(
The beef patty and coco bread were over $6.00, the coco bread was buttered, sugared and toasted. The patty was decent if not for the granules of sugar all over it. I tried the mac & chesse, it tasted like greasy garlic pasta. While I was there I sampled the meats they serve, they weren't good either. I will be surprised if this place stays afloat serving awful food. Beware don't waste your tastebuds on it, yuck or your $$$$$$, yuck!!
Curry chicken was to die for, juicy chicken, great flavor in the sauce, cabbage was perfectly cooked, seasoned just right, and the yellow rice was also very delicious. The service that i received was outstanding! I was brought a sample dish of each meat, jerk pork, chicken, curry chicken, and stew chicken. Each one of them was delicious in their own way, the curry was my favorite. RUM cake is a must! I will be returning! FOOD, QUALITY, CLEANLINESS, STAFF, AMAZING!
Brown chicken and yellow rice was delicious. Staff was friendly and offering samplers of the different meats. Will definitely be back.
Wanted to give it a try because of all the reviews. I was so disappointed. My "jerk" chicken taste like it was just drizzled with barbecue sauce. I think they forgot to put cheese in my mac n cheese. I've had real Caribbean food since my in laws are Jamaican and this didn't even come close. I'll stick with Higher Heights.
Employees are always kind & sociable. They gave my boyfriend & I samples of sauces and their jerk chicken on our first visit & recognize us when we come every once in a while. Prices are reasonable considering how amazing their food is! I get the small cravings jerk chicken(comes w/ mild sauce on top) with rice, beans, and cabbage. My fav. Highly recommend!
My 1st time and it was fabulous. The waitress was by herself and still managed to be warm & friendly. We got a sampler because it was our 1st visit, which was tasty. We ordered the goat and the curry chicken, with beans/rice, collards, sweet potatoe loaf and mac & cheese. It was all delicious. We were planning to go somewhere else, but it was closed so we decided to go there last minute. Best decision of the day. Will definitely go back
Nice cozy mom and pop feel. They even have a bar but it is not club scene type. More like for single parties to eat comfortably. Service was very attentive and personal. The curry chicken tastes different than what I'm used to bit not in a bad way. But curry and stew chicken is tender and full of flavor. Worth the money.
If you want tasty food that kicks your tastebuds into waking up, eat here. The atmosphere is great, the food is kickin, and the people are nice and friendly.
Food was great service was great this, is the, third time I, have ate their. But myself and other meal companion nearly froze. The temp inside restaurant was 65 degrees. (Have photo to prove it phone had temp sensor and the ceiling fans where sharing at about mid speed. We had to put Jackets back on. Other guest left and third table decided to cold and changed from eat in to go and they where closet to space heater. Out side temp was 25 degrees. But felt warmer in the sun.
its a non-black business.. The food is not that good.. Not enough flavored
Fantastic and tasty food for everyone!! Family run business... All good made with love & attention. Great service and hospitality. Must have the Cocobread for starters!!! Very reasonable prices
I used a living social coupon for here. Overall good food, a little bit expensive. The staff are polite and nice, but the wait was extremely long. I got there when they had two waiters, one was completely new so you might experience faster and another ordering. It has potential! Also lighting is way too dark
The worst ever!!! I eat Caribbean food all the time. I had stopped to Island Krave on my way to work. I ordered the jerk chicken w/ rice & peas Mac & cheese and cabbage. The jerk chicken was nothing but chicken in Bar B Que sauce with A strong vinegar taste. Ewwwwww when you think jerk you think A little spice. And the chicken was real salty. The Mac cheese was A joke dry noodles with garlic powder. Yuck!!!! But the cabbage was good. I spent $16 on this nasty food what A waste. I'll never eat there again. I'll keep going to MP's Caribbean food on Military Hwy
This was a great place! The food was delicious I had the chicken curry with beans and rice;everything was cooked perfectly and the waitresses were super friendly and conversative, price wasn't bad either
Great food and great people. They were fantastic about helping my family order a combination of dishes so that we could try lots of different flavors. We are really glad to support this local business. I recommend the brown stew chicken, plantains, and coco bread.
The moment my wife and I walked through the door we were treated with so much love! We felt like we were amongst family! The staff were so kind and warm! They
gave us samples to try which were delicious and made it hard to decide lol! Everything was great! The food and service was outstanding!!!
The Pork Coco Jerk is amazing with the side of seasoned fries. Also if you have never been here expect a fairly large sample plate with the top items on the menu. Great customer service, kind of a hipster atmosphere.
I'm only giving Keisha 5star that's da best I can say about island krave
A lot of food for a great price. I had the brown stew chicken over yellow rice: delicious with just the right kick of spice. I will be back to try other menu items.
Great customer service. The taste and flavor of the food was extremely lacking. I spent 30 bucks for one oxtail, store bought gravy, cold cornbread and 3 burnt plantains. If you want authentic and great tasting Caribbean food, PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Delicious Caribbean food. Excellent service. Locally owned. I love this place!
This was the worst food I ever tasted. For one when I call and ask for Jerk chicken it would be nice to specify what kind u have. I dont want chopped up chicken with BBQ sauce!!!! The greens tasted like they was cooked then frozen, thawed out n reheated!!!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TRY HIGHER HEIGHTS OR MPS!!! THIS PLACE WAS A JOKE!!! 👎👎
The food Is sooooooooo good.
Good Island fare. Warm and personable staff and atmosphere . Best Oxtail stew on the East Coast. Smoked meats are " to die for".
I love this place.
Ordered thru order up, food was great but prices was expensive. 1.29 for a can of soda 15.99 for curry chicken.
The service is great however, I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and beans from here. The worst I've ever had! The chicken was shredded with some sort of sweet, knock off "jerk sauce". I heard that their other food options were good but my personal experience was not good. I am from the Caribbean and I just want to say that This is a horrible representation of Our Food.
This one gets 1 star. To be frank, I'd give it 0 if I could. Me and my lady went here. I ordered the jerk chicken and she ordered the fried fish. While the fish was pretty decent, the same can't be said for the rice or jerk chicken. Lots of the rice was hard and cold. The "jerk chicken" was not jerk chicken but instead chopped up plain ole chicken with some kind of sweet sauce (not spicy at all gents) on top. Also served cold. Why chop it up so much? I've never had jerk served that way. For $25+ and a 20 min wait for cold food, I could have went to Montegos. Much better bang for the buck. Disgusting! Worst of all is I'm still hungry.
Worth the drive from Newport News.. .we will be back. Great server very professional young lady.. . Thank you...Only bad thing just add more Desserts to the menu .... But great food .👍👍👍👍👍
The food was outstanding! The oxtail was tender with a tantalizing brown sauce that made your mouth water. The rice and peas withe the cabbage had me feeling IRIE Mon.
Miss Lovell puts it down in that kitchen. And its all served up by Miss Kendra. Kendra's service and attention to detail was impeccable. She is the cherry on top. The food it outstanding,
The chocolate cake is to die for..and to wash all that down..I had a kola champale.. my friends and I wer very pleased..
Good food, good service. A little small and they can get busy very easily.
My favorite restaurant in Ghent!! Amazing food, service, and atmosphere!!
Cheesy Coco bread
Mac and cheese
A small order is good for two people is you order appetizers.. a large if you're really hungry..
**Sorry no pictures for this post because I was so hungry that I just scarfed down the meal like a vacuum** hopefully next time I'll post pictures, because I'm def coming back!!
First time at this establishment today for lunch with some of my co-workers, we all LOVED it. From the customer service to the very authentic dishes all was well. The menu selection was larger than expected , bottom line....I will be going back and not just at lunch time 😊
This place is delicious! The coco bread is addictive! Everything is great and at really decent prices. Smoked wings are another favorite!
Trash! Pure trash! I was born and raised in the Caribbean and I was so excited to taste some authentic delicious food. I had to throw their food away and cook my own because once again pure trash. This isn't the first time I tried them either. I believe in second chances. But Island "Krave" didn't even deserve the first chance. 0 stars
Delicious Caribbean style food. Delicious lemonade too. First time visits are offered a free sample. Big portion size to match the not that high of a price. The place is small. I really like going there for lunch on my days off.
The Best. If your looking for great Caribbean food this is it. First timers will get a sample of the meats to help make the decision harder because they are all fantastic. We ordered the Rib plate , jerk chicken plate and chicken curry . All were authentic and tasted great.
The restaurant has a relaxed feel. Seating is limited but takeout is available . The food ,drinks, friendly staff and low key setting is worth the wait and prices were reasonable.Would of given a higher rating but 5 stars is the max.
Been here yesterday with my uncle and ordered chicken curry, fish fry and smoked wings. The meat was perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. Options were less but sampled two more dishes, even they were too good. Service was also good, overall I'll rate it 5...!!
Great food! Best service experienced in years! Quiet intimate enviroment! My new favorite!!
I ordered the chicken jerk sandwich on Coco bread and it was hands down a life changing experience. The sandwich melted in your mouth and all the flavors were so well balanced. I would 100% recommend stopping by if you're ever in the area. The staff is extremely friendly as well.
Stopped in on a whim tonight to check out Miss Dorothy's place and it was amazing!! It kinda felt like we had walked into her home and she served up her best home cooked recipes, wow. We had empanadas, smoked chicken and stew chicken. All 3 so good!
And our waitress also does the desserts and baking (got samples)!
She was fantastic as was the chow, going back soon!
This place is SUPER OVERPRICED!!! And the food is outright DISGUSTING. Im shock to believe they would associate their food with Jamaican food. Had the curry chicken and it was cut up pieces of chicken served over an over cooked mushy rice with sprinkles of beans and a side of cabbage that seriously taste like vomit. Go to MP for a much real Jamaican experience. Island kraves might only be good for stray dogs
The food was better a year ago but I don't see the original cook/owner. Get the fish and dipping sauce, plantains, cabbage. Stay away from the collard greens.
The side portions are half the size they were... : (
Truly unique restaurant with some of the best food in the area. The staff are all incredibly friendly, and the environment has a great, relaxing vibe. Don’t miss their happy hour with some awesome cocktails.
Delicious food and very friendly staff.
If you are new to the resturant they will give you a tasting plate. This really helped me make a decision. I never thought I would eat jerk pork until I sampled it here. Best ever.
Don't drink and drive and don't eat the rum cake and drive. Devine cake to end your meal.
Well when I first went in, I was greeted very kindly by the staff. A very friendly young lady. I told her I had never eaten there before and she offered me a sample plate of all the veggie dishes (I'm vegetarian). Like, WOW where does that ever happen?!? Everything on my free sample plate was delicious. Seasoned to perfection! So I ordered a meal of cabbage, yellow rice, & curry chick peas. OMG!!! Yummy!! My only problem was that the portions were small for the money you pay. And I'm not a greedy eater but these portions were like kids meal portions. I also ordered take out for my husband of the oxtails, rice, chick peas, & sweet potato loaf. Now that section of the menu says that oxtails are a "family size" for $19.99. Not true. The platter was the same size you would purchase at a Baptist church $6 fish fry. My husband loved every bite but fussed at me for paying $20 for such a small meal. He said at that price he should have at least had some leftovers. So all in all....Island Krave has excellent food but they are charging too much for those tiny portions. I heard someone else say that about a week later when I enquired
Food was terrible. was not Jamaican food. I ORDERED JERK CHICKEN. WHEN I OPENED THE CONTAINER IT LOOKED LIKE SOMEBODY JUST PULLED APART SOME CHICKEN AND SPLASHED SOME BARBECUE SAUCE ON IT. i ASKED FOR SPICY AND THE SAUCE WAS NO WHERE NEAR SPICY, IT WAS BBQ! I WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN. I WILL ALSO MAKE SURE I TELL EVERYONE I KNOW TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE VERY DISAPPOINTED.
I used to frequent this restaurant for years but I went last night to celebrate my birthday and the food was horrible. The cabbage still had the stem in it, I received a significantly small portion of the brown stew chicken and the rice and peas was dry. I inquired to the waitress about the change in quality of food but she seemed unphased by my dissatisfaction. I’m sad to say I won’t be returning and now need to find a place to get authentic Jamaican food.
Had great service from Charlie!! Daughter and I both had the jerk chicken with cabbage and mac n cheese!! It was very good..it comes boneless and a mild sauce..a different version of jerk chicken but good...also had the toasted sugary cocoa bread..I like it but will say I like regular soft cocoa bread better...cute little spot with a nice vibe...will definitely be back!!
Great food! The ONLY place to get quality, delicious, & flavorful Jamaican food. Staff is very friendly and courteous. And the atmosphere is comfortable. Makes you feel at home.
Went here for the first time.2 hours ago.....$35 for 6 (whole) wings a "large" serving of the browned chicken with sides of rice and beans, plantains and their chickpea curry. Sides were pretty small for the price charged. Chickpea curry was canned chickpeas with squares of potato (the little kind that come out of a can) with some bottom shelf yellow curry powder, nothing else. The browned chicken tastes literally of straight salt with no other flavor. Called to the store and was told that their recipe for browned chicken is salty by default. Will not be returning. Please visit Desmonds off of Providence Rd in VB or MP Island Cafe in Norfolk for quality CarrIbean food at a solid price.
Waiter was very friendly and funny, but food is NOT authentic Jamaican food. Jerk chicken is just chicken with barbecue sauce on it and you can only get oxtails over the weekend. What kind’ve real Jamaican place doesn’t have oxtails every day?! I’ve never been the type to write reviews but I am highly disappointed that many of the reviews say this is real Jamaican smh. But I guess that’s what happens when they put a Caribbean place in a gentrified neighborhood.
Food is delicious. Great service. Spicy jerk pork is best I've ever had.
I always get the sweet plantains but for the past few months that I've ordered from there... The sweet plantains aren't moist. They made it more of a dry sweet plantain. I would rather have it served moist.
Where to start this place is horrible, if you want jamician food take the drive to mp island cafe, mp island has a buffet also its banger. This place is horrible they charge you so much for super small portions, and then you have to wait 45 minutes to get your food. Jaimican should already be Cooked and ready to order I will not be going back here ever. Good luck if you give this place a chance
This is horrible! This is not a Jamaican restaurant! The food is over price! The plantains were so dark! The curry goat is watery! The rice and beans so black and hard! Sugar is on everything! I wanted to vomit after eating the coco bread! Waste of my money! Highly disrespectful to my country
I'm not sure what to compare this food too. But jamaican food is just not it. A good waste of appitite. Plus the long Island is the worst I've ever had, and I've have a few long islands in a few countries. I was completely devastating by the food experience. The atmosphere was congenial if that's of any significance.
Went to check out Island Crave after they won BEST JERK CHICKEN in yesterday's Virginian-Pilot. Because we were first-timers, Yvonne brought out a sampler plate of 4 marinated meats, all tasty.
We shared oxtails, curry chicken, jerky pork, and curry chickpeas (vegan). Oxtails were TENDER, with rich dark sauce: best ever! Curry chickpeas were great as well.
Meat portions were small, esp the oxtail: smallest ever!
Very reasonably priced, except for oxtails. Entrees were $9-$16, oxtails $20. Wines $5.50/glass.
It was a nice visit. Great personality and service. Food was good but not the best. Drinks were nicely maid and priced. The food however was over priced for the portions paid 20 for a curry goat dinner and it was 1 spoon of goat and most of it was bone. One thing I didn't like was that the server couldn't tell me exactly what type of fish came in the fish dinner. Would I go back no. Was it a nice one time visit yes. It was nice and clean.
The best Caribbean restaurant I've been to thus far. Everything was delicious and I love how they bring out samples of each meat to help you on deciding what you'd like. I highly recommend this establishment.
Delicious food. The staff is wonderful. I would highly recommend to try it.
I thought living in New York, the culinary genres were incredible. Anything you wanted and or had a hankering for you could find it in the big Apple. Living in tidewater I could not for the life of me find a good Caribbean joint. I'm glad a friend dished the goods. I'm learning that they're menu changes seasonally. Can't wait to try this famous sweet potato pie.
This restaurant was recommended by family who live locally and it couldn’t have been a better dining experience! The food was beyond amazing! Since it was our first time eating there our waitress provided samples of the main menu items before we ordered. Everyone in our party finished their plates! We will be coming back on our next visit to enjoy this amazing food and great staff. It’s truly a hidden gem!
Declining excellence. This spot used to have a lot of character and charm. The owner was ever-present and ran things with a unique energy. Lately, the constant rotation of staff is a big contributor to its decline in my opinion. I see a new person working there almost every time I visit. That's ok, but you lose consistency and continuity. Then theres the decor. It lacks imagination and identity. The only thing that reminds you that you are in an island themed restaurant is the music. But even that's diminished because it's being piped through a flat screen TV from Pandora. Oh, the food! The quality has also declined. I got a serving of that rice at the bottom of the pot last time...that hard, crunchy, semi burnt rice...yeah. Usually its decent, but lately the quantity, quality and price has become enemies to my gullet and wallet. I'll still go back because I will always support black owned businesses, but the spot needs an infusion of energy and identity.
Didn't enjoy. Overpriced $22 plate. Oxtails were not tender. Rice and peas was not authentic, Mac and cheese was watered down with fake cheese sauce and plantains were sprinkled with cinnamon or something. Overall disappointed. I had to throw away. The people working there were friendly. But I have to be honest.
I just want to give 100 stars. My friends from the islands and i NEVER thought i would get food better than her home cooking. Well i was absolutely wrong! This is the best ive had by far from a restaurant and i will definitely travel out of my way to get this when im craving some island food. I tip my hat to everyone here. Very professional as well.
Turkey Wings new to the menu. This is the best dish on the menu so far but are you ready for whole Turkey? That is a special order so, get your holiday order in early. I know I will. Here is the Red Velvet Cake, just made today. This staple is another holiday special
Never disappointed at the Krave. Great location! They are so friendly and the place is clean
Anyone who rates this poorly doesn’t appreciate food! It is AMAZING! All the sides are delicious, the plantains are some of the best I’ve ever eaten, the sweet tea, the cabbage, the jerk pork and chicken, and the curry chick peas...holy! And the rum cake, no eating and driving!!!
I was not satisfied with the service nor the food. There were no options to order a vegetarian meal to your liking. Therefore, I had to order rice and peas, cabbage and Plantains all as separate sides. I paid almost $15 for 3 sides. But the serving does not match the cost. There was a vinegar taste in the cabbage and cinnamon sprinkled on the Plantains. I didn't like either. My family is from Jamaica. I never heard of anyone putting cinnamon on Plantains. Not a good combination. My suggestion is to allow the natural sweetness to live in Plantains and don't alter the flavor.
Jerk chicken was spiced just right and cooked to perfection. Collards and sweet plantains were so tasty! I was really impressed and full:)
My friend got the fried fish and they spread a little butter with cinnamon on the bun. He really thought that was different and went great with the fish.
Plenty of food in terms of portions. Friendly service.
Inside decor might deter some, but the food was the focal point.
Lots of folks doing takeout for a Friday night. Everyone had smiles on their faces coming in, that is always a good sign.
The entire menu rocks! The meats are succulent, tender, and packed with flavor. I’ve been coming here since this place opened and I’ve never been disappointed. The plantains are the best I’ve ever had and the cornbread is what dreams are made of. Only downside is the place is small but does offer limited outdoor seating. The sweet Jamaican beauty who runs the place has always been uncommonly accepting and kind since the first time I met her. The portions are worth it. I can never finish even a small plate. Just trust me it’s quaint is the least noteworthy thing about that place really
Wonderful service, clean dining room and fantastic music. Great jerk chicken and jerk pork. I love their vegetarian cabbage, so delicious and flavorful. One if my favorite places in Ghent. Do yourself a favor and eat here often!
Great, if you authentic jamaican food do not pass by here. Just discovered this place today and went there for lunch and dinner!!! Great staff as well.
The meal was salty and warm. The Jerk chicken was bits of overly smoked chicken with jerk sauce sprinkled over the chicken and the rice. The cabbage was soupy, I was very disappointed .
Highly recommended by multiple friends and locals!
Finally walked in and was greeted with a sampler plate
The samples had a huge...read this and 280 more
