Highly spicy, but great taste. Meat melts in your mouth. You can get it not spicy, but that really isn't any fun. Part of their charm is that you can't easily get this level of hot elsewhere.

Charles C

Incredible local color, Great service, a constant stream of patrons, a simple menu. Stiff prices and OK BBQ. I expect my brisket to be a lot tenderer. Just good not great, sorry guys.

Ilana T

The real deal, from the shack with many Facebook-worthy bumper stickers gracing its walls, to the paper napkins and shady-looking people hanging out on the sidewalk in front. Ribs are delicious, satisfying, and saucy. Don't expect fancy and you won't be disappointed, but it's not cheap food, either.

Cameron D

place sucks. i adivse you save money by not going to this dump

Ryan J

I came here to get some smoked ribs to satisfy my craving and I left with a tired jaw. The ribs were over cooked to the point that they were chewy and crispy on one side, almost a jerky. The smoke flavor was great as well as the sauce but man was it hard to chew those ribs. As far as rough but its a BBQ joint and I kinda like that.

Michael H

I have been going here for years but stopped after watching one employee disrespect another man and be rude for no reason just because the guy didn't know what he wanted to order right away. That day my food was pretty bad too. If I'm going to pay extra money for food, I'm paying for customer service too. Therefore I am no longer interested in that place. I haven't been in a year.

Sonya B

I been loving this Q, for over 20yrs.

Debora G

I've had ribs in Texas.... Sorry Texas, you don't have anything on these folks!!! Husband and I ordered a pork rib dinner and a peach cobbler. Comes with 7 ribs, potato salad, beans, 4 slices of bread (which We never eat) and a side of beef links... Potato salad= good, Beans=good, beef links= great, Ribs= amazing, Peach Cobbler=to die for! Service=very friendly and in my husbands words overall "amazeballs"!!! We got through about 1/2 of the ribs, some beans and potato salad and some beef links survived. We killed the cobbler! We have left overs for tomorrow and all for about $20... And mind you, they close at 9pm, we showed up at 9:30 and they still wowed us! We will be back.

Erick C

My favorite place for BBQ for sure. The sauce is untouchable. I drive 50+ miles one way to get the three way links, chicken and brisket. Delicious!!!

Daniel S

Extremely over priced for tiny, meatless, dry, grainy ribs. Unseasoned potato salad, and undercooked bakeed beans. The signature sauce is the only thing they should be selling. Have some respect for the craft.

Ron L

9/10/15 Terrible service - non-friendly counter person - if I didn't know better, I would think they were racist. Terrible food - order the briskett sandwich and got broken bits of dry, leathery meat with the sauce in a separate plastic cup and two pieces of dry regular wheat bread in a plastic sandwich bag that she grabbed from a trash can filled with them. The coleslaw side was commercially bought and dry also! Not worth the money spent nor fit to eat!

Chris L

Really friggin good barbecue. Try the hot links!

Bud C

The only Bay Area BBQ joint I've known that would make it more than one day if it was in the South. And, IMO, would beat out their competition there.

Lauren s

I love it the give you very good portions and the food is delicious !

Homeless L

Fabulous BBQ and very generous caring people

Timo t

A nice gem in Berkeley. Excellent ribs, generous portions. No frills, but it's picnic table, outside BBQ, so who cares, dig in!

Kenneth G

First off we were driving around Berkeley looking for somewhere good to eat amongst all the Indian restaurants. We parked and just walked upon this place. Be warned it is a bit pricy, more like $$- $$$ dollar signs.

BBQ sauce was spot on. Me and my fiance got the medium and it had just the right amount of spice and heat. The ribs were cooked to perfection. The brisket was a little tough but still moist. We had the green beans, macaroni & cheese, and potato salad (which was forced on us due to no substitutions) for our sides. Green beans have a vinegar tang to them. Macaroni could use a little more flavoring and a creamier sauce. Potato salad had way too much mayonnaise in it.

Why only 2 stars is because the lady that put the meat is our trays did so with her BARE HANDS!!! That's right now gloves or any kind of protection. I watched this with disgust and still only ate the food instead of demanding my money back because I wanted to promote black owned businesses.

The lady grabbed everything with her bare hands. She grabbed the meat, the trays, the napkins, the receipt, and even the flatware. I was utterly besides myself. I don't know own if I'll ever go back to this place, but I do know own I'll not endorse this place for proper food handling skills to friends and family.

Lisa S

Easy comfort food. There can be a wait on weekends so plan ahead or make your order to-go.

Tarragon M

They don't take phone orders. Bunch of lazies. I reject any app delivery requests to this place. Go Indian or Asian, not this crappy place.

Been Eating It As Long As I've Known. Only BBQ I Eat Besides My Own

Gerri F

Cash only most of the time, but sometimes they take card. Simple menu, clean store, no frills, some seating inside (long bar to sit at, no tables), tables outside too. Sandwiches aren't what you'd necessarily expect: you get the meat, potato salad, and sandwich bread on the side (think wonder bread or potato bread that'd you'd get at a supermarket, not a roll). The medium sauce was pleasantly spicy.

Guillermo D

Incredible and cheap ribs. For take away only.

William P

For what it is a very good place The Taste is great

Dan B

Great! That goes for the whole experience. Nice people and great tasting bbq.

John B

Great late night food stop. Always get the Mac and cheese.

Chandler B

Great spicy sauce.

tommy j

Great food the brisket is delicious and the ribs are even better

Frank E

If you come from the South and you miss great BBQ, you must come here. It's a basic rib and chicken joint, but prices very reasonable for excellent food. You'll crack up at the funny bumperstickers on the walls. Highly recommended BBQ fans!

Yancey C

E&J have the best ribs in the Bay Area! Don't forget to get extra potato salad and beens! Please support this multi-generational black owned business! Thanks for all ribs guys!

Theil S

Wow!! I'm mainly a BBQ chicken person but something about those ribs yum yum couldn't stop eating them. Mary is sweet, kind and wonderful, awesome staff and the cakes by Willie, this brother males cakes so delicious that it will make you dance. I'm Chef Noel and I know what I'm talking about. You gotta go

J.C. R

If you like BBQ you'll really like this place. I just feel like it's a bit pricey for my taste but my wife loves this place!

Gary K

Had the 3 way . Ribs, Brisket, & Chicken. Sauce on the side.

Very good BBQ.

I always stop when I am in Berkeley.

Ro G

This place is great! Great service, great food. I was jus passing thru and ended up at subway as I was leaving I see a man getting wood for bbq? So I park my car again to check this place out and went inside. Best decision ever made. S/O to home girl who hooked it up with the sauce. Real deal bbq!

Adam H

I've travelled the usa, and have eaten at some bombass bbq, but this place is in the top 10 for next

Massimo B

Rib and Link dinner was fantastic. Slice of cake for dessert was horrible and they charge $4.50 per slice. Stay away from their desserts horrible value.

Sean B

Absolutely horrible! Bad service, overpriced , dry ribs, bad potato salad. The chicken is alright but nothing special. Seriously do yourself a solid and never go here. The girl at the register was rude and didn't even offer me my change. I can't believe this place exists

Brian W

Terrible food. Chewy brisket. Sauce tasted like out of a jar. Sides too. Ribs not tender. Also gave me the wrong sides. Food was ready in 1 min which is a bad sign.

Melissa H

Best BBQ in the bay area. The hot sauce will have you crying.

patrick f

Bad customer service. I felt like the cashier treats everyone like she could care less. Very sad and disturbing that the owner doesn't seem to be aware that this affects business. There are other BbQ spots to go too. I don't recommend here unless you don't care how the people taking your money and providing a service for a living treat you. Food is good, attitudes are bad!!!

Spencer R

Ribs and beans are amazing. Great bbq. Service sucks but the food is great.

Terresa J

The food taste old the quality of the meat was very very low grade 3 years ago they had good quality Barbaque my neighbors stop eating there 2years ago do to this same reason.

Thoughtless T

Damn good and damn spicy just the way I like it! Had the 2 way which was way too much food but it was so good I finished it! The spicy sauce not for lightweights it'll make you work for it but it's worth it.

Justin K

The smell of cooked meat dragged me in. Pork dinner with beans and potato salad was everything you could ask of a casual BBQ joint. Was not dissapointed in the meat portions.

Family ran vibe with great food.

Amanda S

We came down for a concert and looked up Barbecue places to eat, this was the first one on this list. This was our first time here and the food is absolutely amazing. Worth it!!! And we will be return customers for sure.

Robert M

Bay Area landmark known for the barbecue. Last time there unfortunately the quality of the food was not what I am accustomed to hope that it was a one-time thing. Not cheap expensive food option for casual dining

Brandon B

Best BBQ you'll ever have! The sides were amazing, especially the beans and mac & cheese, which were the best I've had. Get the beef links, chicken, and brisket. You'll be coming back again soon, I'm sure.

Oli D

Simply put, the best barbecue in the bay area. This place is off the chain good! Sampled all but had a mountain of brisket as was too damn good!

Taurus R

I'm going to give it one Star only because......😟 the beans was rock hard not even edible the ribs was the end pieces so they was dry the brisket had a lot of fat on it, potato salad need a little more flavor, the German chocolate cake was dry you can tell it was from a box, the bread was fresh, 🤣that's all I got to say

Queen B

Got served burnt ribs. I checked my order and sent it back it just seemed as though the cook was slightly irritated that I complain after ordering a 4 way combo and dessert to the tune of 50.00 wow

Sly T

I am very disappointed... This place doesn't deserve the hype! The food was just... Ok. If it wasn't for the fact that I was starving and paid $18 for a plate... I probably would not have eaten it. My beans were hard... The ribs were dry and rather tough... And the potato salad wasn't good. Wouldn't recommend it... Will not go back.

Stanley D

BBQ ribs were perfect, mac and cheese just like momma made. I prefer southern style mustard potato salad but theirs was unique and tasty.

Heavenlee A

Best BBQ in the Bay! we come from Pittsburg to enjoy this wonderful food. Hometown wonder, must stop in and have a taste

The meat and sauce are awesome, but I still haven't found the combination of sides that I like. Service was great!

Brisket is too lean for my tastes. Good service, home style!

Jameelah L

Food was cold..but customer service was good

Great Service!!! My name is Juan Coleman the ribs and links are hella good. For that person who said they was bad service. Take a 👀 look in the mirror. Maybe it’s you and your bias nasty attitude. I always order the center pieces of the ribs real juicy. I can’t chew the ends but some people like the ends. I love ❤️ them and they are nice to me. FYI, for some reason when you click on for website it give you Oakland Everett and Jones. That’s not their website in Berkeley. Everett and Jones in Berkeley is the best ☝️ one.

THE PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN ARE HATERS. There are more people in the review says the loved the food..Hahahahaha

Virgtrese M

It was okay. Beans was hard and the ribs was toug with lots of fat. Service was good but if you want your food to be quality you must make sure it is season, tender and cooked all the way. Your prices must reflect quality and the food did not reflect quality.

Jason N

Awsome bbq if your ever there stopin as give them a try you won't regret it.

gracia c

I'm home less I can to everit and Jones me and a friend Tuesday March 20 @7:10 this evening me and another homeless woman asked for homeless plate it was a 39 year old man skinni and short hair cut said no then he talk about us to the customers making fun of us something has to happen Gracia choyce

carmen m

Really small, customer services is like rude. I made i big order, the only give few napkins, plates. When are asking something abouth menu we has not goof answers. Food is good. Beans are really sweet.

Folasade A

Total waste of money, which is really unfortunate. Ribs were all fat and no meat, barbecue sauce was runny and flavorless, and they were very stingy with the sides. Told me I couldn’t order over the phone after 9pm, but that I could come in and order which didn’t make any sense to me. Service was average. This was very disappointing considering I’ve heard so much about how Everett & Jones is a high quality family restaurant.

Me' C

Best Barbecue in the Town and probably the Bay Area. Small, but Delicious. My relatives drive over50 miles equaling a little over 100 roundtrip to get this Cue

Customer service was a joke. Walked into the joint... everybody was rude as hell. Never felt like this when I went to Jack London Square. This place give you the cold shoulder like they don't even need your money. The whole time I felt like I was interrupting them from watching the Warriors game. Then I asked them for a to-go order... they told me to go down Jack London Square because they don't do that. What a complete waste of time. It's a shame because I really love the food.

Some damn good bbq here. Great level of spice. Good portions of meat. Good cuts of meat too.

Let's be frank. Sometimes the customer service can be a little blunt and to the point. But whatever. Its damn good bbq

Food was ok wasn't worth 24 bucks though beans was watery spilled all over potato salad service was ok not ever going back sorry

Dennis W

Oh my goodness!!! I just ate this and it was absolutely delicious. we had some of the chicken, pork ribs, brisket and then Mary included some of their homemade links that just melt in your mouth.

I really enjoyed talking to Mary and learning about the business. they have been in the same place for 44 years and it’s no surprise. I look forward to my next trip here.

Cassandra I

The ribs were very fatty and not so tender. They weren't falling off of the bone. I've noticed that popular places start declining in quality for some reason. I live in Sacramento and still say Tank House has been the best ribs by far and second to Cat Heads in San Francisco. E & J are not in the running.

Deborah J

Usually I am very pleased with the service and the food, but lately I have received food that was over cooked and sometimes burnt. I spent $25.00 and could only eat half of my food. Please don't make people pay for burnt food, or food that is to hard to chew. Take a more pride in what you serve people. It would be appreciated.

vernon j

I will stop going to this location because of the bad attitudes and bad cuts of the meat. Went there last Saturday and the big guy that cuts the meat really has attitude. He acts like he really doesn't want to work there and roll his eyes at customers that he doesn't like. We order a slab of ribs and the ribs were hard and stringy. I think he cuts the bad parts of the meats so we can stop coming in there. I know last year he messed up a order but we let it go and we continue to go in there but after last Saturday I'm done. I been going to this location since 1982 and never had any problems till now. When you ask to speak to a manager and they always say the manager is on vacation.

Tammy W

Nigel B

For $24 a meal you expect quality food, especially when the ambiance is, to put it bluntly, bad.

I had brisket and ribs with green beans and potato salad. The meat was ok. It was a bit dry and the ribs were far from falling off the bone. The green beans tasted funky and the potato salad was the mashed kind (not my thing personally). Other than the green beans, nothing was outright bad, but you definitely don’t get what you pay for.

Shawn C

Good bbq is hard to come by!!! This hole in the wall shack is one of the best! A little pricey but bbq is usually expensive for some reason... still worth it! The spicy sauce is off the hinges!!! 😅

While like other guides, I won't say this is the best BBQ I've ever had.

Not that it wasn't well done, they know what they are doing with meat. It's the rest of the process where things fell off.

Let me explain. But before I do, I want to qualify myself by saying I have won half a dozen blue ribbons for my BBQ and in 1991, was the CBS National Recipe Contest winner.

Add to that my degree in Food and Beverage management and many years in the food service business both in high and low positions, I think I am reasonably and objectively qualified to render an accurate review of this BBQ.

First, I have to give kudos to the counter lady who was so nice, sweet, polite and helpful, you got to wonder why this kind of customer service isn't available at much more pricey places to eat.

Well, on reason is that this place has their soul in it, whereas a higher ticket establishment may only be there for the money and all you get is hype and lip service. Such is California, if you think about it.

It's the Gold Rush gone to seed. You see it everywhere.

This young lady made it a pleasure to fork over money easily, and you can't say that about a lot of establishments. So I ordered my favorites, pork ribs and brisket. Pork ribs because I love them most, and brisket because if you can't do good brisket, you aren't in the BBQ business for real.

I got as my four sides, green beans, baked beans (also another indicator of BBQ competence) potato salad and macaroni and cheese. Wheat bread came on the side.

Everything was timely and well packaged. I promptly came home and began. The ribs are simply great, and they cuts the chef chooses to use in your order are an indication of how they view you as a customer.

Anyone who has gone into a restaurant and got the stink eye from the kitchen crew better watch their bites carefully just about anywhere you go, although California used to be the top of the leader board in this sport.

And all you got to protect yourself is the old adage, "Let the buyer beware."

There are three versions of sauce, mild, spicy and hot, and I chose mild because I like to taste meat not heat, when I am dropping a significant dime.

The cuts of rib I got and the smoke on them and in them and the texture of the exterior versus the tenderness of the interior almost made the fact it fell off the bone redundant, and that is saying something in the BBQ world.

The sauce was a little watery but had good flavor but it was overly sweet. However, this is just a preference in the BBQ world and the smoke master usually gets his way with such things and customers go along for the ride, even if it is not their choice.

When I BBQ, I make my sauce a balance of sweet, tangy and spicy so everyone is happy. It also makes a whale of a flavor combination. So, the overwhelming sweet of the sauce did not overwhelm the smoke and succulence of the pork, fortunately. But it nearly did.

That could not be said for the brisket, though while tender, professionally cut, plentiful and generous to say the least for my money, was so slathered in a pool of sauce I frankly could not taste the beef, though I tried.

I thought there might be some delicious beef flavor underneath that sauce, but I couldn't find it. So, I have to drop one star for destroying the beef with sweet.

I had to drop another star because when I went to enjoy the slices of bread with my order, the first thing I got a hit of even before they went in my mouth was mold.

Now, black mold in California is the new asbestos, and when it gets into your body, it never comes out. It feels like you are sick just a little all the time, and it can be bad news for unprotected elderly.

That said, because most restaurants clean with strong agents like bleach or orange oil, there is never any excuse for black mold being present in a food service institution, except for one.

They don't clean the restaurant well, ever.

The hit of mold in my nose before I even bit into the bread was the reason I take off another star. And there you have my review.

Best BBQ I have ever had. Beans and potato salad were my sides. Bread helps sop up every last bit of sauce. You will chew on the rib bones all night long. Put me straight to sleep after a long day of Bay Area adventures. I tried the ribs, gonna get something else next time.

Want some BBQ? Good that's what this place has. Want something else, try another place. Straight ahead BBQ with no BS. It's good.

Very good BBQ! I enjoyed their ribs, brisket, pulled pork and spicy bier sausage.

You order inside and then devour at a table, if available, as this location was busy.

Their sides were good, but your their for the BBQ! Everett & Jones had several different sauces, from mild to spicy, with a good amount of tang and vinegar to off set the smoky and rich bbq.

The only barbecue spot I go to. That other place Embers in Hercules is not up to par. The links are made in-house and I drove about 100 miles (from Santa Cruz) several times to get this bbq. Once I was lucky enough to be there when the owner was there and she loved my dog and I told her where I came from so she doubled my order for free and gave me free sauce on the side.

This was my first time visiting this location and it has such a family vibe! I have gotten to eat some of delicious ribs, chicken and bbq beans at our advisory board meetings before. But this was my first time I have gotten to visit the location and get a plate. My plate tonight was a huge portion of delicious beef links with bbq beans and I am so glad I also got to try the potatoe salad. Totally going to come back and bring my partner.

Delicious barbecue! We purchased potatoe salad, bake beans, ribs, and sausage. First time eating here and will eat here again.

If you love barbeque then the Berkeley location is your choice. You will never be disappointed and the taste and flavor are always the same. Combination beef and ribs are my favorite. Don't forget the sides like their potato salad, beans and pecan pie.

This is a Bay Area staple that's fed everyone from locals to celebrities and dignitaries. It's a no frills family owned restaurant with good BBQ and good size portions. The Berkeley location is small and it's more geared towards take out, but there's a few barstools along the front window as well as outdoor seating. You can order over the phone for pickup Monday- Thursday.

The customer service is always on point and the service is fast considering how BBQ takes a bit of time.

I always get the link dinner w/ 2 sides. There potato salad has a bit too much vinegar for me, but most of the sides are good.

You can't really go wrong with BBQ. It's worth a visit if you're in the East Bay.

Ugh, I was so excited about this place and it ended up being a mediocre experience. It may have just not been for me. I have a lot of BBQ and nothing really stood out for me. The sauce was good, the meat was hearty and not full of fatty pieces like some places that I have been but the portions were kind of small, especially for the sides. I would have liked a little less sauce. If you are into the sauce being lathered on, you will enjoy this place for sure.

Brisket was good. The sides however were a total letdown. The beans lacked flavor, but the worst was the mac & cheese it was so overcooked it was like eating mush.

Maybe it was an off day. I'll probably give it another chance before writing it off. Review will be updated if it improves.

If you know you know. The vendors outside are a little tacky sometimes. It sucks they don't have a restroom. The patio is dog friendly. Very nice people!! Still 5 starts.

This place can be hit or miss. But when they hit, they're pretty good. Check your order for freshness before you leave.

Ok i got the beef brisket and it was awesome. People were very professional. And very quick

Anthony S

First time customer and most definitely the last. My order was Mac & cheese, string beans and beef & links. Visually everything looked like old left overs. Mac & cheese was dry as chalk and the flavor profile was that of salt, same flavor with string beans. Eating the links was like eating sand, very dry. And the beef, the Lake Merritt birds really enjoyed it. To be in the culinary buissness there food is strait garbage with a side of S***.

Charred small pieces of junk meat. This place USED to be awesome. Sounds like it was passed down the family line and this new generation just doesn’t seem to have their hearts in it.

Excellent As Alwayz. Even Though It Was Crowded The Line Was Movin Quick. Thee Staff Was Efficient Courteous And The Food. PRICELESS
