Marrying two otherwise conflicting culinary styles, this popular West Village spot manages to retain that hearty flavor found in most soul food, sans lard.

How would you rate Detroit Vegan Soul?
Wholesome, nutritious food! I absolutely loved it!
Really good take on American style cooking but with the amazing twist of being completely vegan. The restaurant is clean, with a laid back vibe is really an inviting space to sit and relax or hold a conversation with friends. The Indian Village neighborhood in Detroit is definitely a relaxed space.
All of the food that I've had there, from their completely vegan burger, to vegan BLT (Coconut Bacon) has been incredibly delicious and has made me feel great afterwards as well. And if you want a special treat make sure to give their hibiscus iced tea a try. Splendid. If you're in the area, definitely give it a try!
This place is amazing. The food is great and the staff is awesome. This is on my list of go to Vegan places to eat in the greater Detroit area.
delicious, healthy, fabulous!!
Hibiscus punch is great; they also have yam fries which are pretty good if you don't like redskin potatoes. The vegan catfish is amazing as is the seitan steak.
Situated in Detroit's historic Indian Village, DVS anchors the neighborhood as one of the new business ventures taking a chance in revitalizing the area. There are palatial homes on one street and the next can host a row of dilapidated buildings. DVS is clean cut, down home, and cozy. We happened to come in for Sunday brunch, where they have a limited menu. I went for the brunch plate and my partner got the tofu scramble. Although they were out of greens for my plate, they substituted it with the best braised kale I've ever had. The kale was braised al dente and tossed in a bright dressing of soy sauce and lemon juice. I didn't miss the egg or butter in their moist corn bread and the beans and protein were also delicious and balanced. Service was hospitable and efficient.
So nice to see this combination Soul with taste but no meat fat less carbs and dairy which is been waiting for it for years.
Great neighborhood of West Village. First time having an all vegan meal. Very good and fulfilling.
Great service, great food. Got the bbq tofu sandwich was really impressed. The hibiscus tea is a fantastic house specialty; got even me to skip the coffee
The food was outstanding, perfectly seasoned. I just wish they had longer hours.
Mixed bag some good some not so good, worth a try but hit or miss....Pretty sure the kitchen was smoking something funny because my order got changed like 5 time from what they didn't or did have.
The food is amazing and the vibe is welcoming!
This place is great. Excellent customer service, food is prepared quickly and it tastes great! They have my favorite vegan burger in town. I feel lucky to have this within walking distance of my home but would travel from most parts of the city to come eat here if I had to. The vegan catfish is great as well. I only wish they were open on Monday and Tuesday
Food was just okay. Definitely overpriced. Atmosphere is great.
Amazing food. Fair prices. Hospitable service. Can't wait to go back!
I ordered the Seiten Pepper Steak and I was beyond impressed. I stopped eating meat almost a year ago and I loved steak prior to. I would be lying if I said it tasted JUST like steak but I can definitely say that it was very close. I recommend this meal as a 1st time vegan eater. I will return again, maybe tomorrow!
Great food and atmosphere! It's nice to have a vegan restaurant with a soul food spin to it. I loved the catfish tofu.
Recently decided to go Perscitarian(not sure that I'd go completely vegan), but definitely having eliminated all inorganic, gmo's and poultry and with a son with a host of other dietary issues, this place has blessed our palates tremendously!!! The cook even came out so that we could thank her personally. The DVS burger is now my favorite burger PERIOD! It is now our "go to" spot for our families dining out treat.
WONDERFUL customer service. And I Love the food! Even the dessert was amazing , I will def return ...
Amazingly good food and fantastic service. The vegan catfish and smothered tempeh were off the meter. I could have stuffed myself silly with the perfectly baked cornbread muffins alone. I only wished we lived closer to enjoy this incredible goodness with so much soul!
Wow! Just back from dinner. Everything was fantastic. Don't miss the smothered tempeh (amazing plate) or the black eyed pea hummus. Everything we sampled was delicious. Way to go!
We drove from ann arbor on a spring Friday night about 40 miles one way. We wanted to try things in Detroit and branch out. Walked in at 837 and was told they stopped seating at 830. It's nice to know that they have plenty of business and that thousands of people are beating down the doors of Detroit to spend money here that businesses can turn customers away at 837 on a Friday night. I have been to almost every major city in the world and if detroit wants to be known as world class then there needs to be some kind of compromise when it comes to service. In the meantime I'll bring my no limit American express elsewhere. It's not 1950. Vegans stay up late too somtimes. The only reason I'm giving this place two stars is its a vegan restaurant and we need more places like it. Perhaps when I cool down I'll actually try the food if I can fit in their banker hours into my schedule.
I went and it took 20 minutes for me to be seated. Even though half of the tables and seat were available. The waitresses walked right past me and sat other people down before me. A line came in and I finally got a seat when I asked the cashier about such. It was the last seat and table available. After my 20 minute wait I was seated. After being seated I received no menus or customer service for another 20 mins. My friend showed up and then I finally got menus but no customer service. By it being a black owned restaurant I thought I would have had a better experience. But aye maybe it was just a bad day. But my experience wasn't good. As a #AfricanAmericanMale I felt profiled and disrespected. Especially when I had to wait another 30 mins for my food which was #MashedPotatoes and #SteamedKale . So I took a hour drive to #TheCleanPlate where they were very nice and welcoming. Great customer service at #TheCleanPlate
Pretty chill atmosphere. Very friendly service. It is tucked away in a quite neighborhood. To be honest I am not one to eat too or vegan food. Not that I dont like it just never really went for it. But! This was some amazing food. Very well done and thought out. Good menu selection along with drinks
Took my friend to Detroit Vegan Soul for a late Saturday afternoon lunch for our birthdays and never got a chance to order as we were treated like we were back in the 1960's at a Woolworth's Lunch counter.
Once my friend and I were finally greeted by a server we asked for a table as there were 2 tables for four near a wall on the far left side of the restaurant that were open as well as seating at a bar area for carry out orders and a small table for two tucked directly in front of the front door. I have severe allergies and it would be fruitless for me to sit in front of the front door. Aside from that, I dont like to ever sit near the front door at any restaurant as it is my personal preference...and truly that is reason enough.
In asking to be seated at one of the open tables for four, the server denied us seating at those open tables stating that "those tables are "in the event a large party of people comes in."
Really. Well the fact is no large party of people came in to be seated in the 30 minutes we wasted there. In that amount of time, we could have been seated (away from the front door), ordered our food, possibly enjoyed our meal & paid our bill.
I informed our server that we really didn't feel comfortable sitting directly in front of the door so, she recommend the bar area where the carry out orders are picked up. We declined, she refused to allow us to sit at either of the open tables for four so we sat at the table in front of the dern door anyway. After perusing the menu items, a gentleman sitting at a table for two exactly two tables over from us (away from the door) finished part of his meal and packed the rest to go in a carry out container and left. We then asked our server if we could move to his table. The server replied "Yeah I guess so". We quickly grabbed our menus and glasses to move and the server nastily replied, "Can you give me a chance to clean off the table first!" Then the server walked away.
Mind you, the table was spotless.
So much so that shortly after that exchange, a little blond hipster lady came in and was quickly greeted then seated at the table for two that we requested to move to. The greeter came over to our table and said "Well another server sat somebody at that table already." Then she nonchalantly said "Sorry" then walked away.
All the while, those two tables for four were open as were now two other tables for two that were nowhere near the front door, however other hipsters that came in during that time our server was away were promptly seated at those tables.
Needless to say, we left Detroit Vegan Soul and had a phenominal veggie sandwich, chips, raw juice amd Peach Cobbler muffins at Whole Foods for our lunch. Even ran into some friends there as we sat in a booth eating our yummy meal. Whole Foods is a huge chain store but I ALWAYS recieve excellent service from the entire staff each & everytime at Whole Foods.
I hope the owners of Detroit Vegan Soul actually read these reviews. All of them. I'm going to make this very clear, I do not patronize businesses that allow thier staff or servers to dole out subpar service and I most certainly will not patronize ANYPLACE (particularly a Minoroty & African American owned business) that allows thier staff or servers to treat me, my friends or my dollars like cast a away (IN MY OWN NEIGHBORHOOD) because I'm not a "West Villiage" hipster. I would have loved to try the platter dish but the server we experienced left a bitter taste in our mouths. The menu items sound creative and look delish, however it seems the focus now at this point is to find employees that support your business model and your customer base (all of your customer base, not just certain customers) with pleasant and caring customer service each and every time.
Till then, I will not return nor would I recommend Detroit Vegan Soul.
The food was delicious - I think even non-vegetarians would love this place. My wife and I got the Soul Platter and the Smothered Tempeh and shared them. Everything was really good, but the Smothered Tempeh was the highlight for sure. We also split a Banana Split milkshake that was probably better than any dairy milkshake either of us has ever had.
Everything was reasonably priced. We were seated quickly and the food came out in a timely fashion. All-in-all, we had a great experience and plan to go back next time we're in the area!
We were able to call ahead and they had our order ready for us (perfect for road trippers). The food was delicious. The Mac and cheese is out of this world.
I would go here when my church would fast for lent. When I noticed me still going there when I was off the fast, I knew the food was great. Fair pricing, weird hours, awesome food.
We had an amazing time and delicious meals at Detroit Vegan Soul. My husband and I from Philadelphia here visiting our son and grandson. We choose this restaurant as we are vegetarian/vegan and wanted to share a wholesome meal with them. None of us were disappointed. The meals were seasoned just right and not overcooked. The service was great. We also had an opportunity to meet the owners Erika and Kirsten. These two Sistahs are doing a phenomenal job of providing plant based Soul Vegan food!! We wil see you next year when we return ;-)
The MOST delicious vegan food I've ever eaten. And my top 10 favorite restaurants, including non-vegan ones.
I've gotten the DVS burger twice, so maybe I'm bias to this particular item. It is INSANELY good. I could eat it every single day.
My vegetarian friend got the smothered tofu and it was amazing as well.
My other (very carnivorous) friend got the southern fried tofu wrap and he was absolutely blown away. Tasted just like real fried chicken.
The cookie/cupcakes we got were very average, but the actual dinner items.... A+++++
Wish I lived closer because I would go every single week.
Their pancakes, sandwiches, and deserts are AMAZING... However I'm not a fan of their soul food platter, the black eyed peas lacked seasoning, and the Mac and cheese was dry... Also the past few times I went service has been less than satisfactory... However I do recommend it for the pancakes, sandwiches, and deserts. Plus it's black owned which is AWESOME!!!
Beautiful cozy place and neighborhood. We felt safe going there. Totally vegan menu. Courteous staff, the food was appetizing and great tasting.
Great atmosphere. The food was really good. My husband had the soul platter. The only issues we had was that the fryer was down and it took a little while for our waitress to greet us and take our order, but, she was really sweet.
DVS is a vegan oasis! The food is always deliciously prepared and the service is wonderful. I'm greeted by my first name (I'm kind of a regular). They are kind to everyone; warm, welcoming and accommodating. My only wish would be that it's open everyday and longer...and that I lived above them! The desserts are phenomenal too. I literally suggest this place to everyone I know. Every time I do, they go and thank me. Do yourself a favor and eat there. You'll love it even if you're not vegan.
Amazing food, everything we have tried is amazing the catfish especially. We have been there a few times and when it's a bit crowded we notice the servers seem overwhelmed. Not just a single time but in general whenever it's a bit busy. It's still completely worth going regardless of the time...the food and kindness of the staff make it a must if you're in the area.
I love this restaurant! I try something different each time and I have always been pleasantly pleased. I had an opportunity to go for brunch yesterday and the Homestyle Breakfast was quite delicious. The peach cobbler with the coconut ice cream was divine. I will be back...😊
Exceptional tasting food, service and atmosphere. My family and I have enjoyed dining-in and carrying out delicious vegan meals. I highly recommend Detroit Vegan Soul for vegetarians as well as non-vegans because there's something for everyone such as vegan catfish, burgers, peach cobbler, German chocolate cake and much, much more. The staff is warm, courteous and efficient; just tell them what you like and they will make a knowledgeable and appropriate recommendation. Detroit Vegan Soul is our family's new favorite restaurant!
Super vegan restaurant with a menu focused on southern home style cooking. Lots of meat substitute dishes, perfect for taking non-vegan/veg people too. Serious smoothies, great sweet potato fries and good teas.
Long wait today, but well worth it! The cornbread and collard greens were great! Herb potatoes were the best! Desserts were excellent, sweet potato pie and lemon cake! Kind and helpful servers!
The best Vegan food I've had. Great service and a friendly staff! A must if you're in the Detroit area.
Great Service and good food. I don't prefer vegan food but Vegan Soul did an excellent job of presenting it.
Vegan catfish and chicken were amazing. Staff was very polite. I don't live in Detroit but when I visit again I will definitely go there.
No matter what you order at Detroit Vegan Soul, you will love it and you will leave feeling satisfied that you just ate a healthy, wonderful, plant based meal. Everything I have ordered so far has been beyond outstanding, and the waitstaff is very friendly and eager to share their opinions when trying something new. I can see this restaurant expanding because of the down home cooking and friendly service. Good news travels fast, and that translates into more customers, which translates into a bigger restaurant!
Loved the food! It has a great Atmosphere. Friendly staff that frequently checked up on us. We even saw one of the owners greeting customers. Would recommend to Vegan Friends and Omnivore Friends.
The waiter was very knowledgeable about menu items, and it helped that he was a vegan abd could relate to the change I won't to make in my life.
Tasty soul food gone vegan in this cozy spot over on the east side. Definitely will appeal to a variety of palettes. Be sure to check out the desserts also.
My husband and I had a great experience here! We both got the "Soul Platter" with collard greens, black eyed peas, Mac and cheeze, yams and cornbread and everything was awesome. I'm a southern girl and I know some soul food! Whether you're vegan or not you need to hit this place in Detroit!
We were greeted with a smile! The service was great and the for was really awesome... not to salty or bland but perfectly seasoned.
Food was good staff was friendly. Great location in the West Village. An oasis for this visitor from Brooklyn. Before Vegan Soul, all I could find was gross fast food.
Is a great vegan restaurant! they have a decent sized menu that will cater to anyone's taste. The food is always cooked to perfection. Try the catfish tofu it Is great! They have a special menu on Sunday.
My only complaint is that the establishment is a extremely small cafe so the lunch and dinner rush has a long wait usually.
I was visiting Detroit from out of town and stopped at Detroit Vegan Soul on a Tuesday. I was so excited to eat some amazing vegan comfort food (had read great things online) but they weren't open. There was nothing on their website, no note on the door. A barista working at the coffee shop next door said that they owners work really hard and sometimes bend the hours. I saw other groups outside the restaurant also perplexed and frustrated that it wasn't open. A group of girls walked around the side of the building and said they spoke with a man (who I'm guessing worked there) that said they weren't going to open at all that day. It was our last day in Detroit so we didn't get to go. Very disappointed.
Vegan. Soul. Food. What else do I need to say? This place is amazing. The southern fried tofu wrap is my favorite but I don't think I've been disappointed by anything I've had here.
Great idea. The food was very bland though. I got the famous soul platter. I had to add lots of salt and it was still not satisfying. The sweet yams were very sweet. The mac and cheese was not cheesy whatsoever. They tasted like plain noodles. My friend got the burger and said it was not bad. Food also took awhile to come out.
This rating is disappointingly all about the service my family received here. The food was fantastic, the service KILLED the experience. We came in, with plenty of table space available but told to wait 20-25 minutes for another table to leave because they apparently have a policy preventing them from moving chairs to other tables. We're a family of 5, and maximum seated was 4 at a single table. Fine, we wait, as is polite. A half hour later, the other table still not gone, we're asked to wait longer. Starving at this point as we all took early morning flights to get here and had no breakfast. I had to suggest that they split us up - which THEY should have suggested before with this tabling policy (wouldn't you expect they run into this problem frequently??), THEN we get seated. Wait another 10 min because the servers are all on their phones rather than being attentive to not only our two tables, but another couples', then finally get to order. Again, fantastic food, atrocious service. It made us feel discriminated against, and sadly I will likely never forget it.
This was my second visit. The food is really, really good. Their Mac "n Cheez is maybe the best I've ever had. It isn't a great value (pretty high prices), but it's definitely worth a visit.
I came here with a group of 4 back in late March. We had 2 Vegans and 2 Onmis. Everyone absolutely loved the food! The service was on point too! I can't wait for my next trip to Detroit so I can have this amazing food again.
This was the first all vegan restaurant I've been to so needless to say, I was excited. All of the dishes and cups my boyfriend and I both received our beverages in and food on were dirty. It was disgusting. The waitress we had smelled so bad and you could tell hadn't showered in awhile. She also had infected facial piercings if her smell alone didn't gross us out enough. She barely came to our table and gave very poor service. I ordered the seitan steak and was disappointed. It was average at best and they definitely did not give you enough in regards to what you paid for. My boyfriend got the tofu and waffles which tasted wonderful, Id recommend that to anyone. I would get carry out from here, but wouldn't never dine in because of the poor service and poor hygiene.
That seitan pepper steak was amazing! Love the vibe and energy of this wonderful restaurant. My wife and I were in the middle of a road trip from Chicago to Toronto and stopped for some food in Detroit. So glad she found this fantastic spot!
Omg the food is so good!!!! This is one of my favorite restaurants. The wait staff is awesome. The food is fresh and healthy and delicious. It is also very comforting. The atmosphere is very cheerful and inviting. It's in a very quaint neighborhood the exhibits the revitalization of Detroit. I can't say enough good things about this place... P.s... Try the broccoli... Yes I said broccoli... To die for!
Food was delicious. I got the Soul Platter. My first time eating collard greens. They were amazing. Sweet yams were good too. My wife got the tofu chicken with ranch wrap. She was very happy with her dish. The german chocolate cake was perfect. Not too sweet and not too rich. We ordered a second slice of cake to go. We'll be back soon. I want to try the catfish tofu dish next. Looking forward to it.
Amazing food! It is located in a charming neighborhood. We arrived during a busy lunch hour but we were seated and served quickly. The Soul Platter is craveable. Everyone in our party said they'd order the same dish again. Highly recommend this gem.
Haven't even been here yet, I love it and gave it 5 stars because we need more restaurants that offer healthy choices. I recently stopped eating meat. This is a journey I have began to love. I look forward to making this my new favorite place to eat.
I love this restaurant! Selection is top notch and so is the service! Have ridden my bike here just to get a desert! 😀 Thank you for the variety!
For someone who is not vegan, but want to take your mom out who is vegan, this was a wonderful choice. I enjoyed my meal and did not miss the meat. the string beans were delicious and fresh, the mashed potatoes were really good. My mom also enjoyed her meal. We agreed that we would be back to try some other dishes.
I've never had vegan soul food. It was delicious. The catfish platter was great, the drinks, salads and sides were all phenomenal. The wait staff was so pleasant.
It was okay, I got the soul food platter and it seemed to compensate it's lack of animal products with extra salt at times. I appreciated the numerous options. But the only part of my meal I hungrily ate was the black eyed peas, which were pretty incredible.
Im originally from Detroit and was returning for the holiday. I heard about this vegan restaurant and had to try it. It did not disappoint! There people were friendly and the food was delicious. I will be returning every time I'm in town.
I traveled from Lansing to check this place out for my birthday lunch and was not disappointed! I got the Soul Platter and it was great. I was shocked at how delicious the Hoppin' John (black eyed peas over rice with green onions) and the greens were. Both of them seemed super healthy but I couldn't stop eating them even before I tried the other components (which were all very good). I don't even usually like cooked greens, but I seriously can't stop thinking about theirs and plan to recreate them at home because I am craving them!
My date got the DVS breakfast sandwich as a wrap and it was outrageously good. It reminded me of one of the best sandwiches I've ever had (from the Chicago Diner). The tofu "egg" was incredible and the closest egg substitute I've ever had--and I thought I had tried some pretty great ones. Another thing I'll be trying to recreate at home, but they must have some pretty great secret recipes, so we'll see if I can even come close.
Thanks for what you do! Such a great restaurant :)
This place is extremely busy. To get in without a long wait you have to go at off peak times. The restaurant does not have that many tables but there is also countertop seating. I had the fried catfish. It came with potatoes and a veggie mix. It was okay and the sauce was good. The thing I didn’t like about it was that it was very salty. My boyfriend had the breakfast type wrap. He really liked that. He also liked the mac and cheese. I never liked that style of mac and cheese but I think it was executed as it was intended. They seemed to have some tasty sounding desserts but I didn’t get to try one. I gave the place one more star than I think it should have because I think it’s so awesome to have vegan restaurants around Detroit.
I'm originally from Detroit and visiting for a few days. I'd heard about this place and so glad we made time to swing by. Everyone got something different so we could try four entrees and every meal delicious! The staff was friendly, service was good, and even the little extras like German chocolate cake was impressive! Cant wait to go back...
The catfish was very impressive. It had a great flavor. I really liked the peach cobbler. My son is a vegan and he loved the bacon wrap. The staff was supper.
Thank God we have a neighborhood be in that. We love the green movie, mother tempeh, and all the vegetables that are offered. It’s a very good transitional spot for someone who is going vegan or vegetarian. It’s a nice way to try it out. Also it’s in a beautiful neighborhood which is a bonus.
It’s reasonably price for the quality of food but don’t look for some Midwest ideas of portions.
Cant rate the food, as we were never served. We drove from Jackson Michigan yesterday to the Agnes street location expecting a unique dining experience. The only thing unique was the 45 minute wait to be seated, and the 2 hour wait for good that was ordered and never served. We were given a glowing recommendation about this place. It failed on every point. We did receive water and silverware. It was a wasted trip and an overall disappointing experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who respects themselves and their time.....Maybe the food is good, I wouldn't know.
Awesome place and food!!! In love😍😍😍 my husband and I had a great waitress! From the moment we step through the door we were greeted very friendly.🤗 thanks for the experience! However, I think this place deserves the stars given. My suggestion is that the salt on the mixed corn vegetables should be less. We'll be back😬
Wow! Incredible! Food out of this world. When a staff person found out this was our first visit she went out of her way to explain things and gave us samples of food to try and she wasn't even our server! This place will be a regular on our list! Support local businesses!
A small group of us went for lunch at Detroit Vegan Soul restaurant. We were greeted with a warm smile and a cordial welcome. There was a minimal wait for us to be seated. Before I share my eating experience, please know I've been here before. One individual in our party had never dined here before. After the meal, she indicated this won't be her last. Try the hibiscus punch, absolutely wonderful. If you're looking for a wonderful experience eating vegan soul food, this is the restaurant to dine at. Wonderful selection for vegetarians and vegans. On Sundays they have a wonderful brunch menu. Staff is phenomenal! I enjoyed my meal so much that I forgot to take a photo. Please go and experience this wonderful restaurant. You won't be disappointed. Bon appetite!
I tried placing a carry out order but I kept being asked to hold as I heard the associate who was supposed to be helping me, help two other patrons. After not remembering the partial order I placed, I was asked to hold again while I heard a private conversation between co-workers. Altogether I spent over 10 minuets on hold because my business wasn’t as important as other customers or coworkers. Time to hire a better staff!
I'm happy to say that I've truly enjoyed every visit with the Detroit Vegan Soul Restaurant, especially this location. I just went today and the coconut "blt" wrap with lightly seasoned potato rounds on the side was delicious and on point. I have always been greeted with a smile, warm welcome and great suggestions whenever I come in which makes me feel like their guest.
I was pleasantly surprised. I am not vegan. Prices are high for what you're getting. Black eyed peas, yams, greens, rice, and tofu. Those are pretty cheap items. To spend $15 to $20 per person is pricey for me. Otherwise I loved the Hibiscus Punch, catfish and greens. The grains for the rice were a bit hard. I'll be back for the catfish!!
My family and I have visited this restaurant twice and the food was amazing every time. We absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. The staff is very kind and friendly, making you feel welcomed. The food is the main star of the show, Everything is perfectly seasoned and great portions. The food is light and doesn't make you feel heavy. Also the prices are great too. I had D.V.S. burger (pictured below) with vegan cheese. Best vegan burger I ever had. Even the bun was very fresh.
My wife and I stopped in for dinner. Great customer service, very reasonable pricing, and delicious food! The menu has a wide variety of options including mains, sandwiches, soups and salads, smoothies and shakes. There is sure to be something here for everyone to enjoy. All plant based, extremely good dining experience.
This was out first visit and it is a must try!! It's quant and personal. A very comfortable and warm environment! The staff was pleasant and helpful. The food was AMAZING!! It is a must try for everyone!!
So I truly just Love this Place. I told my Father about it then I brought him, he loves the vegan burger. I told my Sister about it, then she went with my father, she had the catfish meal. I always like to get the soul food platter with deep fried tofu bites. (DELICIOUS) today I had the vegan burger meal without the bread. The coleslaw is to die for. My sweet potatoes fries were Delicious. I have to say that I absolutely love this Place, the atmosphere is very nice and inviting. It has a nice vibration very vibrant. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this spot. I'm proud of the Ladies for going into Business for themselves I Pray they have much Success.
The veggie burger I got tasted liked a chicken sandwich at first and the red skin chips were okay. The lemonade tasted very natural as well. I've been a vegan for four years and I'm saying this because, I haven't had the itis (Becoming sleepy after a meal) That makes me think the food was heavy. Overall the food was great but I won't be back
Very clean. Staff was friendly and the food was amazing. I had the coconut BLT wrap and yams fries. Wonderful place, wish I could had spent more time there.
We love the idea of this type of restaurant, but the service was REALLY slow. The smoothie was excellent, but the tofu catfish and seitan with onions and peppers were only marginal. The breading didn't stick to the tofu and was salty and the seitan had a bitter flavor. The hush puppies were quite good though as were the potatoes and mixed veggies. Would probably go back (perhaps to the other location on Grand River) and try something different because vegan restaurants are few and far between and we really want to support them.
"Laid back" is code for very slow. Food is aight, the yam "fries" are really good. "BLT" should probably use something crunchy. Probably deserves 4 stars when it's not busy.
It was great to have vegan eats unfortunately our groups food didn't come all at the same time. However when it did arrive this little resturant had great food.
Spent an hour waiting to get a hibiscus drink, and the soup of the day only for the waitress to be rude when I asked her how long it will take to get the rest of the food since it took that long to get a simple drink and cup of soup. The waitress was disrespectful and answered back to me saying she will cancel my order.
This was my first time going there and last just based on the personal experience I received. I drove a long way to try the food because there are not many restaurants that cater to my dietary restrictions. Was disappointed mainly in the way the the waiter served and treated my table (seemed she forgot about the orders placed by my table of just two because other customers came, sat and had their main dishes and left before we got one drink on the table)
I did enjoy the corn bread that came with the soup but the soup tasted bland.
Delicious food and awesome variety of choices. I got a coconut bacon wrap with coleslaw and yams. It was so amazing... I almost ordered another to go but they were closing soon. I wish they stayed open longer. Looks like they will be next summer? But not this summer. I'm a little confused about that advertisement. But would definitely come back!!!
I've only been twice and it was great both times. The food is delicious and it's such a nice feeling to be in an all vegan establishment. However, it's important to note there may be a wait since it is a small restaurant and seems like it's pretty busy even after traditional meal times. The cool thing is they will text you when it's ready and you can text back to confirm you're still wanting a table. A friend and I got to walk around the beautiful neighborhood so that was nice.
The food is really good BUT the serving sizes are on the smaller side for the prices; BUT the food is really calorie dense so I did not leave hungry by any means. I got the tofu "catfish" last time which was really good; the flavors were spot on! The Mac n cheese side that I added was also really good. Also the German Chocolate cake was soo good!
All in all I will definitely be going back because it's worth it to pay a little extra for quality vegan food and support them.
I love it every time. The food is vegan perfection × magic. The hospitality is lovely. And there's two locations, both with their own style. Great for vegan veterans and newbies. Nothing to even second guess and think about...GO!
We arrived just prior to opening for lunch on a Saturday. Already people were lined up outside. When the doors opened, all the tables immediately were filled. I had the Tomato Basil soup. It was some of the best tomato soup I have had with large chunks of tomatoes. I also had the DVS Burger with coco bacon. It was also excellent.
I love this place! The staff is so friendly. The manager,Briana, is such a pleasure to interact with...she remembers her customers...I was kind of ease dropping in on one of her conversations and I guess one of the regular customers who happens to be a senior citizen didn’t get there as quickly as she usually does...Briana was getting ready to call the customer to make sure she was okay but as soon as she was about to check on her, the customer came through the door...this is more than food...when u become a customer here u will become apart of the family....I love their fried broccoli and their Mac and cheese...it’s awesome...u have a customer for life...keep up the great work!
The “catfish” here is everything! I love this restaurant. They do a fantastic job. I’ll definitely come back.
I love you guys! Great food that is well thought out and interesting. Nice staff! And the little neighborhood it sits in is neato:)
I had catfish (more like tofu catfish) although I was told it was real fish. You get about five or six pieces. Very good if you don't let it get cold. The greens and cornbread was excellent. The Mac and cheese tasted like pasta with a flour paste. I was told it was a plant mixture. If you are not Vegan, don't get excited and worked up thinking you are exactly going to have a Real soul food meal. Go to Taylor Made on E. Seven in Detroit for a real catfish dinner.
My family has spent literally thousands of dollars at this establishment, but it became quite apparent that Kirsten no longer wanted us there, because of our 4 children (who are always kind and quiet). She always seemed to have an attitude when we came in. The last straw was when we arrived at 7:15pm (closing at 8pm, seating until 7:30pm) and we were turned away(by Kirsten)when we could see that there was room for us. No more of our money has been spent there since. There are many more (and better) vegan places (including Green space) that are happy to have our children there.
As I currently live in Columbus, I will find myself thinking about Detroit Vegan Soul as it is one of the best places I've ever had the pleasure of eating....read this and 310 more
