Dat Donut is known for the famous Big DAT, since December 1994, Dat Donut has been a Chatham neighborhood institution. The owners opened their flagship location on the corner of 83rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. Donuts were always a childhood favorite and you can sometimes spot them on site delighting in the deep fried confection. Darryl and Andrea take pride in a good quality product and friendly service.

How would you rate Dat Donut?
Doughnut the size of my head and it's delicious I usually have the glaze or pineapple. Great product at a fair price not too much sugar great texture. A+ Doughnut
Definitely a place you stop by when you're in the area. The apple fritters are huge. Next time I'll try the lemon and carmel donuts.
Best donuts on the Southside for a reasonable price.
I LOVE making the trip to this place for my sweets. I am born and raised on the south side of Chicago and this is definitely a staple! No question I am willing to bypass several Dunkin's for these large, home made, buttery-soft delights. Don't buy these and let them sit around long, while they do keep a million times better/longer than store bought, it'll cause you to miss out in that warm excitement ;-)
Donuts are a tradition in my office for any occasion warranting a treat. I'm generally not a fan, and always skip out to avoid heartburn. Someone recently left boxes from Dat Donut in the breakroom to celebrate a promotion...and passing through, the smell was so intoxicating I could not resist a peek or a taste. I tried half of one, and went back for another half later in the day. Not too greasy, nor was the glaze too sweet! If you are passing through the Chatham area, I would certainly plan a stop.
Because they have the Giant doughnut.
I'm always up for a good fresh donut so a friend and I went to Da Donut and was amazed with the variety. My favorite is the lemon filled which I can eat all day. Donuts are fresh and hearty.
My son really enjoyed himself, the donuts were very good but it could be cleaner.
Great donuts! Very friendly staff
Love all their donuts. I have to stop in every time I get ribs next door.
Doughnuts are baked fresh and very tasty!
My all time favorite donut place. I absolutely love the "big dat" both glazed and chocolate covered. Always fresh and you can actually see them making them which I think is super cool.
Takes me back to that dounut shop under the train on 63rd Halstad when I was a kid. Good fresh tasty the best around. Chicago's best
Very tasty donuts. But the variety sucks. Unless you come in the wee hours of the morning, your choices of donuts are greatly reduced. Why dont they simply make more throughout the day? That's like having a shoe store but you only sell 3 types of shoes. Sad.
I have travel far and wide, I have tried just about every donut and coffee shop, however; none by far have ever come close to the five finger licking good as Dat Donuts. And the coffee is so smooth, you will want to order a large.
They have the larges donuts in the City they sell they are good when there heat up great places for families and friends to buy glaze 🍩 donuts highly recommend this place.
Dounts are fresh and. Tasty and the cashiers are nice. Too
Friendly service and great doughnuts. Better than DD!!!!
Great donut shop. They are know for their giant glazed donut witch is fantastic, you'll skip your next meal if you have it. Cash only if I recall.
Just an all around great donut place. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but they make by far the best donuts I've had in Chicago. Prices are really low and the donuts are huge!
Been eating the scrumptious donuts for 24ys .Even when they were on 76th racine.
Polite staff friendly environment good breakfast sandwiches and delicious fresh donuts
Fresh donuts daily. Hot coffee.
You can't go wrong with Dat Doughnut! I know what I wrote!
Man these donuts are fire!! 24hours too! Omg, i like every donut too, they don't make those weird ones, they just make good ones..
So the jerk rib tips I ordered were good, but more hot than I was expecting. The service, however, is awful at this establishment. The people act as though you owe them something personally when you're the patron. Everyone seems to have a look of disgust of their faces. This is definitely not the type of service that I am used to. I will not be visiting this establishment again based upon the service alone!
Good selection of great tasting donuts. People come from all of Chicago to get some.
The donuts are delicious. The help's disposition is pleasant, with the exception of one bad encounter with the help and I have not seen that individual again.
My favorite donut shop! The glazed donut is fresh with a perfect ratio of glaze to dough. The outside of the donut is hard and the inside is soft and tastes like heaven. Better than any donut that I've had, going here is worth the drive and you will not regret it!
I absolutely crave Dats😆 Their donuts melt in your mouth!!! My family and I gets Dats at least once a week 😀
This donut shop is a hidden gem. Known for their giant glazed donuts. Don't leave without trying one of the strawberry frosted donuts.
Good stuff. Money gotta be right . Small coffee 3! Love the coffee shots and breakfast sandwich's
I love this place!!! From the Turkey, egg and cheese croissants to the ALL NATURAL fruit smoothies!!!! If you haven't been you definitely should go!!!!
OMG.... I love the bowtie that doughnut is my favorite it is soft fresh and sweet 💖 I've tried another but this is the bomb!
Best donuts in Chicago. Hands down. Been coming here since I was a kid.
They are ok I still like dunkin donuts better they need a drive thru.
YES, DAT DONUT! It was so good I had to go back for a 3rd and 4th donut. Also had my first ever pineapple donut and I gotta say it was pretty great!
Friendly service. Fresh donuts made from scratch. Great breakfast sandwiches and coffee.
I went to the Dat Donut on 82nd and Cottage Grove since it's located in my community. The time was about 3:50pm on August 13. Unfortunately, the middle aged woman that waited on me had a terrible attitude from the moment I stepped to the counter. On top of that, she misheard me and made a mistake with my order and when I pointed that out, she began fussing and blaming me for the mistake in my order. Mind you, I said it pleasantly. If you work in customer service, be pleasant to the customer. It wasn't a complicated order, nor was I being difficult or unpleasant back. I think she needs to be trained or placed in another position away from people because it's tiring dealing with unpleasant workers. It takes less energy to just be nice. Anyways, I went there because the donuts are always good, but I think I'll take my money elsewhere until the service gets better.
Best donuts in the city, hands down. Better than stans, glazed & infuzed and all those other hipster joints. Good customer service for the most part too. Keep up the good work!
Home made fresh old fashion donuts very good and tasty. if This my opinion go check them out.
Excellent donuts! Get the big daddy! Cheaper than a regular stans!
Great donuts, but be careful when you try to take them out of town. They'll be dryer than a powder house if you don't store them in something better than the bag they give you. Mine went stale in 8 hours. Still, I recommend the place - even with the bad service.
I love these donuts . The glazed to die for. The coffee is always smooth and hot. Staff very friendly and fast.
See delish donuts... Made fresh on-site... Sooo good. Inexpensive and they come in a jumbo size also. Fresh fresh fresh... Go early. They sell their first batches quickly.
No beards no tattoos...
just delicious OLD SCHOOL DONUTS.
All the favorites are here - maples, long johns, crunchy old fashioneds.
They have coffee too, but none of that fancy mess.
No tables, so get your order and GTFO.
Great, pastries always fresh. Have to get there early. They go quickly
The Donuts Are Awesome! They are consistently fresh! The staff is GREAT!
One of the best place so the South Side gets old fashioned donuts and good ass ribs
Be ready 4 a serious sugar rush when eating one of these donuts. Very sweet, but good too!
Late night counter service sucks! Very rude! Terrible customer service skills!
Never got a donut in a bullet proof lazy susan before; definitely a first. Kinda gross having bbq smell next to a donut shop but open to the charm of it all. The place is scuzzy and suggest getting your donuts to go.
OMG! I could taste the donuts now..so good..and there is a bbq joint right on the side of them...go here and you won't be disappointed
I tried two yeast doughnuts (strawberry glazed and caramel glazed) and the double chocolate buttermilk old fashioned. The buttermilk old fashioned was slightly above average. It was definitely better than firecakes, but not as thick or moist as Stan’s, so depending on your preferences for texture, you might love this fluffier although slightly drier doughnut. The yeast doughnuts here are amazing. I’d rank them below panaderia Nuevo Leon’s, but above every other donut shop in the city, so second in the city by my lights. These doughnuts are yeasty and the right combination of moist, fluffy, sweet, and chewy, realizing all of these qualities with an almost perfect balance! My favorite, esp if you’re going for something sweet, was the strawberry glazed. The glaze does give the whole doughnut an extra punch of sweetness so beware. I also liked the caramel glazed, esp if you are going for something not as robustly sweet. The glaze for this one was delightfully subtle, since you really had to concentrate and reflect on what you are eating and notice, maybe ‘feel’, for the flavor, something only subtlety of flavor demands you to do. I personally liked that, but someone in a rush may be to distracted to notice. Service was great. Look forward to having more of their yeast doughnuts!
The ribs are out of this world. The smoke them with a sweet wood.
Love them donuts. Nice and hot as u buy them
I love these donuts the taste just runs me crazy they are the best keep up the good work.
Excellent service! The donuts are absolutely one of a kind.
My favorite donut place in Chicago. Fresh, tasty, large, and affordable. The Dat donut is large enough for three people and is delicious! Move aside trendy, hipster, overpriced donuts. This is the way donuts should be - fresh and for a good price. Definitely worth the ride (and getting past the decor/external)
I love this place and the fact that it's black owned. The customer service is pretty basic and don't mind the hungry people outside. They're still our people. The only thing I can't stand is I get off at 6pm in Oakbrook. I literally go out the way to support you all and you can't understand simple business ethics like supply and demand. Every single time I come there you all have little or no glazed cake donuts and that's all I like. Please do better. I am a patron and can't get there in the morning.
The donuts I got tasted good and I got 3 of them plus an apple juice for $5. Note: they require an ID if you pay with a debit or credit card... And a $3 minimum purchase.
This doughnut shop is the best in Chicago - fresh, creative flavors, lots of variety and authentic. The dough they use is the real deal and eating a Dat doughnut gives your craving the satisfaction you seek. It is so good that I am going here today for my birthday instead of having a boring cake! Breakfast sandwiches and coffee are great too!
Easy to get to from the Loop or Hyde Park. GO TO DAT Donuts!!!!!
Everything was good. The young lady who took my order was very nice. I love the doughnuts and I will go back again.
No line no wait, open 24 hours, convenient location, available parking lot parking. Fresh donuts!
Good Doughnuts fast and friendly PROFESSIONAL SERVICE. 👍👍
It's okay. I've heard ppl say they had the best doughnuts in the city so I decided to try them. I went Saturday morning and was REALLY disappointed. The doughnuts definitely were NOT fresh. Maybe they taste better on weekdays.
The donuts are very good and very reasonable prices. I like to treat my family and friends to their sweets. I got there anyday for a dozen before dunkin
Love their giant donuts not too sweet and very fresh
Made me stop eating donuts in my home town Joliet . Best donuts
Hey if you are looking for a place for GREAT donuts; I have the answer for you! Dat Donut is one of the best pastry stores that I've ever had. Along with improved facilities, Dat Donut 🍩 is a good time awaiting. Dat Donut is truly a place to go when you want a refreshing pastry with a variety of: coffees, smoothies and othet assorted pastries. Also, it's housed in the same building as wonderful barbecue restaurant with plenty of upfront parking.
They donuts are fresh and delicious. Prices comparable to Dunkin Donuts. Friendly staff
I absolutely love this place every time I crave a donut I stop here to soothe the craving.
Love U Guys Keep Making Dat Donut ... My Favorite Apple Freter ...I think this is the correct spelling 😙
Not impressed at all. Dounuts where good but nothing you couldn't get anywhere else.
These handmade donuts are incredible. No frills and no seating. Just incredible donuts. While my personal fave is the apple fritter the size of my head, I’ve tasted about all they have to offer, and it’s all been great. And for the price?? Definitely can’t beat it. Worth stopping in. Even more, worth going out of your way for.
Donuts are made fresh daily and they melt in your mouth. Remind me of OLD FASHION DONUTS, where you could see them come out the grease. This place donuts taste the same. I would highly recommend this place and it's black owned.
I wish Google would allow locals to rate products apart from the service because while Dat Donut offers a phenomenal product, flavorful doughnuts made daily at very reasonable prices the service leaves much to be desired.
It's not that the employees are rude. I just would say they completely lack enthusiasm and seem like they'd rather be anywhere but there which affects your experience.
Nevertheless I decided to give Dat Donuts 4 stars because the quality of their product is truly excellent.
This place is a local jem. They are known for making a huge donut. The huge donut is amazing to get the flavor right and what's not to love. Also all their regular size donuts are amazing as well. Anytime I happen to be in the area I always have to stop.
When you want that special treat that you devour warm . I enjoy the lemon cakes and the Apple fritters. They melt in your MOUTH
First time visiting Dat Donut today, I brought a Texas Style Glaze Donut. Delicious in my opinion, glad I seen a GoodEats news about them. I will be a returning customer.
Pure heaven the donuts are a great variety. There is one donut that can feed 2 or 3 people If you go try it
Kind of a sketch location, but worth every penny. Excellent donuts.
After all these years they never fell off! Still fresh and good.
As a former donut maker I frequent this place because their product is about 80% consistent they make a great chocolate cake donut a good buttermilk the glaze I just okay some days they're better then the donut shop in Roseland but it fluctuates overall a good product and the girls that serve you do a pretty good job overall goody good
Entered near ten, it was not crowded. The service here is outstanding. Bring your hunger - portions are large. Kinda of like a restaurant in Los Angeles I liked to visit.
this location is one of my favorites. the staff was very kind and attentive. the place has a great atmosphere. feels similar to a restaurant in philadelphia that i enjoyed visiting.
Certainly a top place in the area. I had a cousin come into town and asked me to take him back here. Food and atmosphere reminds me of Atlanta.
I drive from anywhere in Chicago or even the outlying suburbs to come here. Their donuts are the best handmade homemade with love by the same people forever. I recommend if you like donuts then you come here and you eat these and I swear you will never go anywhere else.
Donuts are cooked at the location therefore fresh. No preservatives so I suggest eating the donuts within 48 hours. My favorite is the big Apple fritter especially when nuked in the microwave. It's so big you can easily share with others or you can eat on it several times.
I must admit I have purchased a donut that was not fresh on a few occasions but not often.
Fast service. Donuts always fresh tasting and great hours of service. I come on Fridays to get my baby girl a treat. Haven't been disappointed yet
If you want a good tasting donut I would recommend Dat Donut. If you are looking for workers who are pleasant, have great attitudes and act like they appreciate your business then I recommend you find a donut shop in the suburbs somewhere because you you won't get any of that at this place. Old Fashioned Donuts in Roseland (112th and Michigan) have far better donuts #js
I tried the classic glaze doughnut and the caramel cake and both were delicious. The glaze doughnut was light and fluffy. I warmed it up and it basically...read this and 208 more
