They serve up some pretty extraordinary breakfast dishes. My goal is to try everything they offer on the menu. Some of the dishes they offer are like breakfast and brunch all rolled into one. Good luck trying to figure out what to order, it all looks amazing.
Whoo this place is popular! Came here for brunch last Saturday around 1:45 PM, and it was PACKED. We were quoted an hour wait time for 3 people... which luckily was only 30 minutes, but there wasn't really any place to wait. We were jostled back and forth between tables of eating people and people coming in and out.
I was pretty happy to find such a high-rated brunch place close to my apartment, but I don't think I'd go back because I don't like having to wait. We ordered the Special French Toast flight, so that we could try the Pumpkin french toast, crab and shrimp benedict, the Executive, which is the steak and cheesy hash brown dish, and the Cluck n Gluck, which is chicken with sweet potato waffles. My favorite was the crab and shrimp benedict-- I though that the steak was too fatty for my liking, and the texture of the sweet potato waffles was interesting to say the least. My favorite of the French toast flight was the strawberry french toast because it was soft from all the strawberry sauce-- the other French toast were kind of dry.
Overall, it was a fun experience, and worth checking out at least once. If we hadn't gone overboard on drinks the night before, I would have totally brought some champagne for mimosas because it's BYOB! How many brunch places do BYOB??
I've been here twice so far and each time was delicious. The coffee is great which makes brunch all the better. I had the steak and mushroom deconstructed omelet with the red wine sauce on the side, just in case. It was amazing, especially the sauce! We split the French toast sampler which has every kind they serve. It was awesome as an "brunch appetizer"! Next time I had the spinach and cheese omelet which was good, but I will definitely be having the steak and mushroom again next time!
They had me at chicken and waffles! In my opinion, there is truly a desperate need for chicken and waffles on the North Side. Thanks to Batter & Berries, I no longer have to venture far from my very own hood to get a taste of the goods. The description led me to believe it was a sweet potatoe waffle stuffed with chicken. I'm not sure if the waffle batter was sweet potatoe or if just the butter was somehow sweet potatoe flavored. Doesn't matter - all you need to know, it was scrumptious! The waffle actually had been stuffed with chicken!!!!
My sister had a deconstructed spinach and mushroom omelet and it was excellent! My fiance had the steak and eggs and he was disappointed with the fact that his steak was overcooked, but you have to keep in mind that this restaurant opened up two days prior so there were some kinks yet to be worked out.
For one, the kitchen is very open. Some people might like that, I personally don't. I prefer to live in ignorant bliss; where I do not necessarily need to see where my food comes from or how it got there - just so long as it tastes good, I don't need to be bothered with the details. So I suggest closing that off. They did not yet have any diet beverages, unfortunately. Our server was a bit odd. Not unfriendly or unhelpful, maybe a little blunt and rough in his delivery. Apparently orders are taken on ipad touches; but at first we thought he was just texting rather than taking our order. He also told us our son was cute - ahem, my daughter was wearing a dress and when I corrected him he said he doesn't pay attention to those things. Okay....didn't effect our experience, just an example of his rough exterior.
They were able to accomodate 5 adults and 2 high chairs in a matter of minutes without a hassle - perfect! A nice touch having the owner and chef come around to the tables. Bravo, Batter and Berries! We'll see you again before too long!
I've been here 3x and the food is always delicious. Everytime I come I bring someone who hasn't been before and they all love it. Obviously you need to try the french toast flight as other users have said. As my mom puts it "it melts in your mouth". There is usually a looong wait, but its worth it. The chef comes out and introduces himself and the staff is nice and patient. New favorite restaurant!
I should stop believing everything I see on tv. After watching Chicago's Best and Check Please, I decided to checkout the place myself. Upon arrival, I had about 3 people ask me what I wanted to drink before my real waitress saw me. Since it was my 1st time there, she showed me pictures of some of their dishes and immediately asked me what I wanted. I asked for a minute and she walked away with this look on her face as if she wanted the day to end. She also seemed to me more interested in texting as she spent a good 5 minutes looking at her phone. When she finally came back, I ordered the chicken and waffles (as seen on Chicago's Best) along with a side of cheesy hash browns. The chicken breast was dry and doused with hot sauce. The sweet potato waffle had pieces of chicken in the batter. But, there was this spice (might've been the nutmeg) that just overpowered the entire dish that didn't make it enjoyable. I spent half the time eating it wondering just how to neutralize the overpowering spice. Although they weren't the best, the cheesy hash was the only decent thing I could eat. Needless to say, I was not impressed.
Their french toast flight is simply AMAZING!! love the fact that they have seasonal variations and options on their menu! Great service and great atmosphere!
We walked in around 10am on Sunday AM and was told it was about 30 min for an individual table. We chose to sit at the communal table since it was immediate seating.
Come hungry! I ordered the sweet potato waffle (which is sprinkled with chicken chunks and light covered with confectioner's sugar, YUM). Note an additional fried chicken breast comes on top drizzled with hot sauce. My bestie ordered the Biscuits & Gravy, they cooked our eggs just as we'd asked- over easy.
The menu is pretty heavy, but was absolutely delicious. The service is fantastic, we were greeted in a timely fashion by our waiter, we placed our order, dove into conversation, then our food showed up nice and hot. We barely spoke much as we were too busy stuffing our faces, and washing it down with pretty decent coffee if you like it strong. Took a minute to get the check, but an overall satisfying experience and I will certainly be back to try a ham dish as I saw the kitchen dishing out quite a few of those!
IMPORTANT: Free street parking on Sundays!
Great food! I had the flight French toast and my wife had chicken and waffles. The best I've ever had. I'm talking amazing tastes. And the caramel butter...smh...I never knew something so good existed. The next time I'm in Chicago I'll definitely stop here.
I used to be a huge fan of Batter @ Berries until this last time that I went. Me and my friends met there about one week ago and the customer service was horrible! My friends egg whites were over cooked, my hamburger was undercooked, and the waiter was horrible. When we complained to the manager about this, all that he said was to give them another chance.
Little did he know, he was talking the three women which happened to be customer service supervisors for a major airline! Well it's sid to say that I will not be giving Batter@Berries any more of my business!
I used to live in Chicago and I'm glad that I've moved, otherwise I know that I would be huge and broke because the "Flight"! is FANTASTIC!!!!! I've had different breakfast items and tried some of my friend's Steak Omlette and I've never been disappointed. I will not make a visit to Chicago without stopping by Batter & Berries. Great food, great staff, GRRRRREEEAT french toast!
Terrible experience. I was charged $9 for an espresso drink. When I asked the manager, he proceeded to question what caliber of restaurants that I frequent. He also stated that he had managed a Starbucks and that this is what they charge. I don't know about you, but I have never purchased a $9 drink at Starbucks. I will never go back to a place that deals with customer complaints in this manner. Not to mention that the food was bland. Don't go here!
I finally had a chance to make it to this place after hearing great reviews from my friends and family for months. Batter & Berries definitely lives up to the hype! My lady and I went on a Monday morning so we avoided the long lines of the weekend. We had the French Toast Flight together, she order the Crab & Shrimp Egg Benedict, and I had the Super Steak Omelet special. Our waitress was nice, very informative, and the the wait for the food was very short. All of the ingredients are high quality and the food was delicious. Both the hostess and manager were nice as they interacted with all of the patrons making sure we received top notch service. We'll definitely be eating at this restaurant often.
The food is so good! The staff is so cool! And the fact that they accommodate a pregnant woman craving with something thats not on the menu!!! The waitress was awesome and even though they were busy they attitudes were positive and this an experience you dont get!
This is a place where you can fully enjoy your food and the company. The ambience of this place is just so great and inviting I've been here several times and will be back a plenty more times!!! Keep doing what you're doing and making people happy with your creativity with meals.
Had the Cluck-N-Gaufre (Goof)$13.00
chicken-stuffed sweet potato waffle topped with a fried chicken breast & drizzled in a nutmeg hot sauce and maple butter and it was easily the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. Our server was Tuusime and he was great. You can tell he loves his job. Great place, highly recommend it.
Omg hands down an amazing breakfast place. ... amazing period! Fast curious and accurate service! Muah!
Amazing food. The wait times and chaos at the front door is very annoying, but cuisine is well worth the wait. Everything is delicious! You must have the French toast, and anything that comes with the cheesy hash browns. The best part, BYOB of Champaign (or whatever you want) to have mimosa!
I drove all the way from Nashville, TN to get this food again. My goodness! It is amazing! The Pork Chop executive is too die for. My recommendation is to arrive at opening....ten minutes prior to opening there's a line at the door. The customer service is wonderful as well....if you come to Chicago and do not come here you are truly missing out....even if there's a wait, it's worth it.
Quite possibly one of the best breakfast joints in Chicago. I have been here a couple of times and every time I have loved my meal. I would recommend the French Toast flight and the crab cakes... absolutely delicious. The service was also very prompt and the servers are always very nice and ask what you are in the mood for if you are asking for recommendations (and they are a slam dunk every time). The one downside of course is that if you get here on weekends get here as soon as possible, like before the place even opens because the wait is insane otherwise!!
Don't waste your time, the wait is not worth the hype. Service was slow, place was annoyingly loud. Coffee was warm at best, selections were limited. Canned strawberry??? Really!!! ( per the menu)
Ended up canceling my order. The 3.00 parking wasn't worth it.
I can't speak for the food (had to leave before I got it), but my experience was horrific due to the lack of "real time" problem solving skills and inability to put the customer first. I hope this review is seen by the owner and serves as a "teachable moment". We drove 50+ miles from the south suburbs of Chicago to attend church and have breakfast. When we arrived, was told it was a 45 minute wait. We opted to get our food to go. We ordered and the waitress was very good at upselling. We went back to the car to wait the 15 minutes we were told it would take. We came back in to pick up our order 15 minutes later to be told it wasn't ready. We stood another 10+ minutes and no order. When I inquired again was told to have a seat as they were finishing up the order. After 5+ minutes of sitting and seeing other to go orders leave, I asked again about the order. Was told it's not ready and that it had been given to another customer so they were remaking it (no apologies). Waited another 5 minutes because was told they are bagging the food as we speak. 10 minutes later, I asked for a manager to find out what could be done to solve. Was offered a coffee. I told them I don't drink coffee and they just stared at me. I told them that I wanted my money back. They told me to continue to wait and that the food would be worth it. I then told them that I had heard great things about the restaurant and wanted my girls to experience the food. Also mentioned that we drove 50+ miles. Then I saw them cleaning a table. Stated that if we had kept our name on the wait list we would be seated now so why don't they let us take the table and eat the food that was supposedly coming out now. They said no. I asked for my money back and left without the food. Teachable moment for the owner...this should not have gone this far. They lost money on the food cost/prep (twice), damaged a potential long term customer relationship & is getting negative publicity all because they couldn't solve an error in a timely manner while keeping the customer engaged & satisfied. Hope they can hold their employees accountable because once the buzz is gone, and they have to rest on their customer service laurels they will be in trouble.
It is byob. I was hit by a cork. Just missed my eye. A couple sitting behind me took upon themselves to open their own bottle. I complained to two different staff. They had an oh well attitude. One even said, 'well that's what happens here.' Neither one asked if i was ok. I stopped the chef and shared with him what happened. Kind guy, but still didnt get that a patron could have been seriously hurt. He did ask if I was ok. But he seemed annoyed that I kept stating that this was a serious act. He did pose for a pic with me and my girlfriend. I had the chkn fajita omelet. Delish! Later that eve, while eating dinner at Brazzas the electricity was shutdown by a storm. The manager came out and stated to everyone that their meal was on the house. This is how you keep customers coming back!
Nice breakfast place on the North Side. The chicken and waffles and the french toast flights are both good. Tea came in a mini french press, which was pretty cool. We were seated at a communal table in the middle of the restaurant.
Great food and folks. Wait cab be excruciatingly long though!
Worth the wait. The presentation of the food is oh so appealing - and its backed up by the delicious flavors. Even if you are a pancake or waffle lover, make sure you try the French toast the first time. Lovingly I say, Do it! They have a wide range of sweet and savory dishes and I look forward to going back to try something else. Oh and they have a nice selection of loose teas.
The service was entertaining and friendly!! The food was also very good. Didn't do the French toast flight but the cheap benedict special was perfect mix of crab and hollandaise with a perfectly poached egg.
This place was fantastic! They told us it would be about 25 minutes and took my number. They texted me when the table was ready about 20 minutes later. Took maybe another 5 minutes to be seated, which is understandable because this place was a madhouse. Once the order was placed, I was surprised that it came out in what, I'm sure, was less than 10 minutes. I had the chicken and waffles, and my girl had the pork chop executive. The hot sauce on the chicken was unreal and the waffle was fluffy and light. Mixed with the whipped maple butter, and sprinkled with confectioners sugar there was no need for syrup or any other additions. Had a couple bites of the pork chop, which was cooked to perfection; along with the grilled onions and cheese encrusted hash browns, it was amazing in it's own right. I also think that the eggs were farm fresh, as the yolks were very rich. The coffee was strong and blazing hot, with a robust color and flavor. The cranberry pomegranate tea was also delightful. I really can't overstate how great this place was from the food to the service. Chef Rylon asked how things were, shook my hand and said he'd see us next week. He's probably right. Also, it's BYOB, so I'll be prepared for mimosas on my next visit.
The services was awesome! Everyone was so nice and friendly, only thing it's a small place so the wait may differ depending on what day you decide to go! I love this place!! 2 thumbs up from me!
Good breakfast. Try the strawberry French toast. I chose the "cluck and gravy". Not what I expected but it was good. Try to get there early. Even though you still have to wait a while to be seated.
Always a long wait, even when you get there at 8. But they will text you when they have an opening, so you can explore the area. The food was incredible and if you don't want to wait, you can grab it to go and skip the waiting entirely.
Food tasted good but 'french toast flight' (sampler) was cold upon arrival.
Second dish was the only saving grace, a sweet / savory twist on chicken & waffles with spicy maple syrup and sweet potato waffle. A surprising sensory experience, absolutely delicious!
They asked if I wanted more coffee, who doesn't? Then charged us for two cups which I thought was actually quite petty considering we paid over $30 between the two of us and spent less than an hour in the place.
If the coffee was something out of this world delicious/specialty I'd understand but it was just the regular watered down cafe coffee you'd expect. That added to my french toast flight being absolutely cold upon arrival left a bad taste in my mouth.
Batter aND Berries was fantastic! The girls and I went on a tuesday morning and the place was still packed. Seated very fast. Orders came out even faster. I ordered half and half strawberries and blueberries french toast, cheesy hash brown and bacon. The sides are priced separate. But for the taste, it was all worth it. I never had french toast where I didn't need to add syrup. I almost was tempted to order more just to take home and enjoy later. WILL BE RETURNING SOON!
So many flavors, this place was amazing. A bit pricy but the food was worth it. Atmosphere is ok but feels a bit cramped from brunch. I suggest trying the french toast flight, that way you can sample a little bit of everything. My favorite was the strawberry though.
Let me get this out of the way: the interior is small. Almost uncomfortably small, but it doesn't matter. The food is ridiculous. I liked what I had so much that I ordered it again to bring home to my fiance for her to try. The owner came by to check on us to make sure everything was on point. I ordered the french toast flight and will probably get it again the next time I'm there.
My experience was not great. They were late in serving and food was not good. Food was expensive for the quality, I paid $18 for an omelet and I had the caramel French toast it was not good. The place is very small so while your eating, the waiting customers are standing around your table talking which is very distracting and inconsiderate of the restaurant staff to place the waiting customers around your table while you eating.
Batter & Berries is across the street from my fave pilates studio, so on the weekends, this section of Lincoln Avenue between Diversey and Schubert is HOPPIN' with people looking for parking or double parking to put their name down. After months and months of watching the crowds line up and hearing car horns honking because of coveted parking, I finally had the opportunity to try this place out this morning.
I got there a little past 9:30am. I thought I was early enough to miss a big crowd and long wait time. NOPE. I told the hostess it was just me, so I needed a table for one (womp womp). She estimated a 50 minute wait time. DANG! Every table was filled. There were at least 4 parties in front of me waiting for tables. Fine...I'll wait...better be worth it, I thought to myself.
I sat down in their "waiting area" which is a little section of a couple of benches and chairs near the back. Guess what? I ended up waiting a little under 20 minutes. Score! See? It helps being a party of one :)
Now breakfast is my favorite meal of the day at any time of the day. So even though this place is called Batter & Berries, their omelets and other non battered and berried items sounded delicious. But no, I had to stay focused, I had to try at least one of the two.
I decided to do their "French Toast Flight". I asked about their "Super Flight", and it's like the regular French Toast Flight, but with an added "special of the month" french toast, which this month is Tiramisu. Truthfully, I'm not a fan of Tiramisu, so I passed on the Super Flight. I also ordered a side of scrambled eggs because my body literally NEEDS some sort of protein in the morning. I'm pretty sure I get "Lack-of-protein-headache" like others get "lack-of-coffee-headache."
My food came out FAST. Within 5 minutes fast! Whoa!
This shiz is delicious. I must say, I enjoyed every kind of French Toast, but blueberry was probably my favorite. My server asked if I wanted maple syrup, but I declined. That would have been sweetness overload! The eggs were soft and well made. They tasted a wee bit too buttery for my taste, but I enjoyed them.
My server was super nice. She checked up on me often. The other workers were definitely on top of filling my water and coffee cups. Speaking of, the coffee was really good. Tasty and strong! They have a very efficient system of workers running this crazy busy restaurant.
All in all, I enjoyed my experience here. Obviously the more people you have in your party, the longer you have to wait. This place is small so be prepared to eat closely to your neighbors.
I would definitely come back.
It just cost us $50 to not eat here. Double check the signs before you park...the ticket we received was not the fault of anyone but ourselves but it sure added to my irritation at this experience. We arrived, put our name on the list for a 90 minute wait, and went to pick up some groceries. We came back over an hour later to check on the wait and were told it would be another half hour and that they would text us. Her demeanor made it obvious that us checking in was unwelcome. I said we'd be back and we went for a walk. After 2hrs of waiting we heard nothing back from them, so we went somewhere else...never did get that text...and seeing as the restaurant is now closed I don't think we ever will.
2nd visit, Their French toast is NOT made to order. More like prepackaged frozen slices placed in an oven until ordered. So basically, we are paying above price for sweet butter and fancy syrup. The crabcake was cold in the middle which means that is another pre-packaged item placed in a oven. It seems that popularity has only made the owner of BnB more lazy and prepackaged foods has become the answer to quickly meet the demand. How about visiting Chant or Mariano's for some tips on hand-crafting crab patties. I want the charm back or at least hot food if you're gonna charge $54 for French toast and crab cake.
The chicken waffle is amazing. The lemon french toast: better. I waited for an hour, but it was worth it to try their french toast flight. I was slightly sad they didn't sell a t-shirt for larger guys such as myself.
Absolute BEST brunch I've ever had! My husband even went so far as to say that it was the best MEAL (in general) that he's ever had! He had the flight of french toast, and I was lucky that he shared with me. This place is always packed, often times with a line out the door, but the wait is worth it!
My Goodness it was amazing!! This is my second time riding from Indianapolis, IN and my friends and I only come for Batter & Berries. I always get the steak omelette and its consistently delicious. Keep it up.
Great service! Great food! Vibrant decor!
10/10 would recommend. 8/8 mate.
The pancakes were okay. I asked for them to be flat. I don't like the middle. But for some reasoning using the spatula to flatten was to hard. Ihop and crakcle barrels breakfast taste better. Environment was really cool though.
You need to go here often, they change a few things on the menu and you'll feel like you missed out on something special. The owner personally comes and says hi, such a friendly and communal atmosphere
My girlfriend said that this was the best French toast shed ever had.
It too forever to get seated on a weekend day around noon. Once they texted us they wanted to seat us at a table with other people which was not our preference, so we had to wait for about 15 more minutes.
The waiter was very friendly and animated and clear into describing the food. They had quite a few things off the menu. Apparently the French toast was their thing so we ordered a flight.
My girlfriend liked her waffle s very much, but I was not thrilled about my decomposed buffalo chicken omelette. It was drowning in generic, straight out of the bottle wings hot sauce, that was just killing the flavor of the rest of the dish which was pretty good.
The coffee and cappuccino we had was decent.
I'd go here again, but would not want to wait that long.
I left underwhelmed... Long wait for mediocre food and bad coffee. I had the chicken and sweet-potato waffle. The chicken and hot sauce were delicious but the waffle was too sweet and earthy. I'm usually all about the earthy stuff, but the waffle was weak. My friend had the french toast flight, which was good, but nothing to write home about. The coffee tasted like gas station coffee with an over extracted/burnt taste. The place was busting at the seams and we had to wait 30 mins to eat... I don't get it.
I am giving this establishment 1 star only because I had to select something. I decided to give Batter & Berries a try because of the good reviews to only be very disappointed. I was told my wait would be an hour, which was acceptable. As I'm waiting I noticed that several patrons with larger parties that added their names to the waiting list after me were being seated before me. After waiting an hour and ten minutes I inquired to see if I would be seated soon to only be told that it would be about an additional ten to fifteen minutes. When I asked about the patrons being seated before me, I was told that seating was system generated or that they may know the "owners" which would move them up on the list. As a consumer attempting to support an establishment that was an insult. I was basically told that if I don't know the right person then wait until we feel like seating you. I attempted to speak with a manager to only be treated rudely by the staff.
There will be no second chances from me. I happily took my money to Glen's Diner on Montrose and had an excellent breakfast accompanied by superb service.
Batter & Berries was a wonderful surprise! My daughter treated us to this delicious fare and we were truly impressed with the waiter service and the food. Our waiter, Tim, was very warm and welcoming and did a great job explaining the daily specials. We ordered the french toast flight and the kindred omelet. We were treated to a taste bud extravaganza! Who knew??
We know now...the food was excellent!! We will be back....soon.
My new favorite breakfsst place. Get tbere before 9, otherwise you are waiting. That french toast flight...OMGoodness! Service is freaky fast too.
We got the Super French Toast Flight and shared it among our table. The dish came with 5 flavors - spiced pear, lemon, walnut, strawberry, and blueberry. It was a very tasty, sweet treat and my favorite part of the meal. I also had the Cluck-N-Gaufre which was delicious as well but the sweet, savory mix was initially hard for me to get used to. Both dishes came with maple butter which was quite a yummy topping. Overall a place worth checking out. But heads up - the wait time for weekend brunch ranges from 1.5-2hrs so drop by to put your name down and then go wander around.
I adore this place ! The food is always fresh, hot and delicious.... the staff is friendly, accommodating you may even get a warm hug ! The owner or chef comes out to greet you, making sure your food is excellent.... I highly recommend , this spot is perfect for gathering or a intimate affair !!! There can be a wait which they'd inform you of ..... however with excellent food , outstanding service and a great atmosphere why wouldn't you wait!!!?! It's never long... less than a hr they will text you when there really for you ...
Got the flight, 4 different french toasts. Delicious. Caramel was the best. Cheesy hash browns are to die for. My son said the hot sauce had layers and layers of flavor. And we came early (before 10:00 am on Christmas) and had no wait. Speedy service with a waiter who asked our cluster of 3 tables to guess the answer to a bunch of jokes. Great service. Great food. We'll definitely be back.
By far one of the best places for Breakfast/Brunch. Food is always fresh and I have never had to send anything back. If you are a french toast lover, their french toast flight is amazing. I always look forward to the flavor of the week. I have never eaten french toast/pancakes without syrup, but I don't even need it here. The honey butter that they give you is all you need!
I had two visits here and had very mixed experiences. Both times the food was really good and the French Toast Flight is not to be missed. Each piece stood on it's own and did not need the assistance of additional sweetness. They mix cheese into the hash browns which is a welcome addition, however on my first visit the potatoes were slightly under-cooked.
Also on my first visit which was on a weekday, they seated me near the door on a cold winter day in an empty restaurant even though I requested to be seated near the back. Otherwise, it was a good experience and I would return.
Have no other choice but to rate it something.....but to be honest wouldn't rate it at all. Today was the FIRST and LAST time I will eat at this place. Starting with the host very unprofessional / rude upon arrival. I was with my husband and my 1 year old daughter and he didn't think to mention that there was a waiting room in the back while he saw us waiting outside for 15 minutes until we decided to wait in our car for our "30 minute wait" which was 100% wrong, we waited for an hour and as soon as we figured out for ourselves that there was a waiting room it was our time to be seated. Food came within 5 minutes and was cold. Coffee tasted like garbage. The host was horrible and only catered to selective people. Get a new host or lose more business seriously. You couldn't pay me to eat there nor recommend it ever.
Great BYOB spot with very very delicious breakfast. I usually ditch the place because of the wait but if you have the time wait it out. I ordered the salmon jerk omelet and it was beyond fulfilling. Everything tied well together with spinach and mushrooms. I added a side of pancakes and they were so tasty.
I would definately give their food five stars. However, after my most recent experience I doubt I will be going back anytime soon. The place is so small and packed that it makes for an extremely uncomfortable environment-which I have been able to overlook in the past but after my last experience I cannot.
Everyone stares at you waiting for you to finish your food including the staff. We could not get through our meal without being interrupted every 2 minutes. The service feels very rushed because the place is so small they want you in and out and they make sure you know it.
The food is ALWAYS room temperature. I've been here several times and my food has never been served to me hot and after waiting so long to eat you don't want to send it back.
What really made my most recent experience special was having our waitress run out of the restaurant yelling that we didn't pay her in front of everyone. So we then had to open the book for her and lift up flap and show her where the money was because obviously she didn't look! How embarrassing!
Like I said the food is great and if you don't mind eating it at room temperature in a small crowded place with staff and customers staring at you waiting for you to finish. Then you should definitely check this place out!
Okay, this place was recommended by someone, I never heard of it so my expectations were typical for a first time joint. Upon arrival to Batter and Berry I hoped this place was good. This place was awesome, more than good, it exceeded my expextations. This is now my new breakfast spot. The hosts and waiters and waitresses are awesome and very interactive with the customers. I laughed, i ate and cried because it was so good.
The food is absolutely delicious!! I had the Caramel French Toast and Mom had thenough French Toast Flight which was a sampler of all their French Toast flavors. The staff were all friendly and helpful. This place fills up quick so come EARLY!!
I heard so much about this place we had to visit. Inflate we did but I won't return. Waffles, Pancakes and French toast is made sweet. It comes to you ALREADY sweet why would they do that?
I was expecting traditional pancakes, waffles or French toast nope not there. I ordered the corned beef sandwich w/eggs and cheese DELICIOUS! If you are looking for traditional go to The Breakfast Lounge.
Most rude service I've ever experienced. Food is great but they are incredibly inflexible. I was in from out of town and met up with some friends and my sister was supposed to meet us but was running late. They sat 5 of us at a 4 person table so we were extremely cramped and refused to add on the adjacent, FREE, table just in case she came. I had to tell her not to come because the hosts were so inflexible. The audacity of their rudeness is second to none. Horrible customer service and experience.
OMGosh!!! I met with some friends for breakfast and we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Between us we had the Lamb chops, some sort of steak and eggs and the chicken and waffles...everything was good but the chicken and waffles blew us all away. The chicken was fried perfectly, moist and the sauce was delicious. They make a maple butter that you could probably put on anything and it would be amazing. I will definitely be back for more. Next time I'm ordering the French toast because it looked fabulous!
Service was great. Food was delicious. Atmosphere was awesome. The strawberry French toast was wonderful. Definitely a place to dine and enjoy your time while in Chicago
i went there to see what all the hype was about. we got there at 8am to avoid the long wait sat right down. There was actually a line already when we arrived. The place is quite small but the food was amazing. I ordered the flight and my bf ordered the strawberry french toast. The cheesy hashbrowns weren't all that though very mediocre. However, the food was quick and hot! These are the kind of spots where I try to already know what I want because its so popular I mean why would you want to sit for 2 hours in Chicago when there's so much more to see! The owner and hostess were nice and very visible. Our waitress, wasn't as helpful and didn't seem very cheerful but whatever she wasn't rude just not very happy.
I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. We went on a Saturday around 11, and there was a wait of about 2 hours and we decided to stay. It was completely worth it, just like every other customer there. The food was fast, delicious, unique and the customer service was superb. I will absolutely be back!
This is a quaint little restaurant but the service and food out of this world. When we arrived we saw a huge line outside but because it was so highly recommended we said we are going to wait this out. We gave the hostess our name and was told there would be about a 30 minute wait. And to our surprise it was less than. Anyway we were seated and taken care of almost as soon as we sat down. Jessica our waitress was top notch and very helpful in making selections. I had the super french toast flight(5 pieces of french toast) which included the special of the weekend peach vanilla bourbon french toast which was my favorite along with the strawberry. Loved that the french toast never became soggy like so many do. And the flavors were so so good. My friend had the salmon special and again it was cooked to perfection and the seasoning on it superb. I'd also recommend their freshly made chicken sausage which was the perfect compliment to the french toast. I could go on and on but to sum it up please check Batter & Berries out whenever you're in Chicago definitely worth the wait.
Hands down the best chicken and waffles.. Ever!!!!! Keep in mind, this is a sweet potato waffle with pieces of fried chicken inside... You read that right. This is one of my favorite brunch spots in the entire city and it's also BYOB. The only problem is the crowd and wait on the weekends ( I'm not the only person who loves it, lol). I've had several items on the menu and everything is amazing. This is my go to spot for people coming into town and brunch with the girls.
Batter and Berries is one of the best breakfast spots in Chicago. The food is consistently delicious, and the service is always fast and courteous. The place runs like a well oiled machine. The french toast platter is excellent - it combines a sampling of lemon, caramel, strawberry and blueberry french toast with an option to add the flavor of the week. On my recent visit the weekly special was peach cobbler french toast and they nailed it. Two thumbs up, highly recommend.
Frederick runs a top-notch eatery with great staff and fantastic dishes. The Crawfish Cake Benedict special was exceptional. It's worth the wait, and they have an excellent wait system where they text you when your table is almost ready, allowing time to browse local shops. I also recommend the Super Flight of French toast for the wonderful variety. Will gladly come back when we're in the neighborhood again. 👍
Food is way over rated. Service was horrible!!
The more I think about it everything was our chef is this, our chef is that. When you can't serve up just some good old fashion plain French Toast, that's a no go for me. I don't care how special your chef is.
So I ordered a burger since it was almost lunch time. Not bad,not great. Bun was cold and greasy. Topped off with 2 way, way, way greasy
Lots better places to go to. They have a pretty good scam going more power to them. But the won't be seeing me again! This may be harsh but you'd been warned!!
🤔Today was me and my husband first time experience at Batter & Berries we loved every moment of the experience from the host (Victor) who has been there since the opening 5yrs ago he is a👨💼Host at the door. Victor also🚶♂️walked around to greet the customers and asked about our first time experiences, he answered all of our questions with full knowledge😊 of the establishment. Next to our Waitress (Terica) who has been there 1yr also had great 😀knowledge of the establishment and elaborated eloquently about the choices on the menu as well as the days specials. Thirdly 🤗Hats off to the Chef and cooks in the kitchen, also the deliverance of our 🤓Server. Every bit was a marriage made from 😇heaven and the presentation from the preparation of the food was a delight of high regard to see and passion for their artiste, moreover😊 for those they are serving. You guys are a 🌏class act that will be hard to out shine.
👍Batter & Berry
I just left minutes ago for the first time, and I had an amazing experience. The food was great and the service was Top Notch!!!
The ambiance was warm and the mixture of culture was a Loving Feeling. This is a genuine review and I have no ties to the restaurant or any of its owners. This is just an honest review from my heart and I definitely advise you to go check it out yourself.
I am 10 years old and needed to write a review. The food is very good. Some of the best food I have ever tasted. Matter of fact, the best food I have ever tasted. Every thing is home made and even their caramel is home made. I suggest you get the Carmel French toast, The Chicken and Waffles or the Black Salmon, all of these are great but before you eat anything you should try the Flight french toast it is like an appetizer of all of there French toast.
Our host was very nice he tells jokes and is really funny. I really in joyed eating at batter and berries.
Wonderful place, the taste of the food is indescribably good. Its not your regular breakfast place. So if you like regular food n menus, you may be overwhelmed here. A little pricey but this is a once in a while place, so its worth it. The food is rich n flavorful and breaks your diet , this is a treat yourself place. Staff is very nice. On the weekends there is sn extremely long wait as the place is a small quaint setting. On the weekdays, it still may be a small wait but its quick. Parking is on the street. Enjoy Yourself
Quaint small restaurant. But very much a destination place to go! The food is AMAZING and the service is quick and great. The French toast made from brioche bread is the best thing to ever hit your taste buds. Definitely check this out.
This place is too small for the business they receive. The pancakes are good, but other than that this place is definitely overrated. My chicken sausage didn't taste good and was under cooked and why don't they have Turkey bacon? The French Toast was okay nothing to brag about. I think so many people have been brain-washed, by people telling them this place has "good food" that they actually believe it. I won't be returning back to this place ever again.
Terrible experience. I was visiting Chicago and looking for a place to have brunch, after I walked for almost a mile to get to the restaurant, the general manager refused to seat me! The restaurant was not full, tables were available and it was not busy at all. I explained to him that my son was about five minutes away, that I've had back surgery and was in pain and that I wanted to order ahead and even so, he refused to seat me. I have travelled the world and I have never been treated with such disdain and absence of consideration. I could not believe it, never seen anything like this. Tables available, no rush and I was denied sitting. I didn't have a chance to taste the food, but I wouldn't want to eat there anyway. Places like this should not be sponsored.
My first time here and even though I live in the west suburbs,I will be back! The food was delicious!! It was fresh it arrived hot and quick and the portions were ample! Hubby got the French toast and I got the waffle and I honestly don't know if I could recommend one over the other, both were really good! The maple butter is the perfect complement. Jessica provided really great service and definitely knows how to give just the right amount of attention while still giving your table time to enjoy their food and each other's company.
I thought the food was well seasoned. I received quick service. Visited on a Thursday late morning. No wait for a table.
Sampled the lunch menu instead of pure breakfast. What I really liked was the community table that can seat up to 12 people. If you come alone there's an opportunity to socialize with others without being intrusive.
Will visit again & take my mom.
Twist on the food. It's super good, and the hospitality is amazing from the bus boy to the chef everyone is so friendly and professional. That's how you keep people coming back. Oscar went out of his way to talk to my mom and make her smile, didn't even know it was her birthday. My mom is from mexico and always feels out of place in these modernized establishments but he made her feel right at home. Thank you guys so much.
We were travelling across the country and decided to stop here for breakfast. We were so impressed by the quality of food and the service! Will stop by next time we're in Chicago! Think gourmet breakfast in the truest sense but fast and very casual. Love it!
Great brunch! I always get the super flight! Wonderful French toast flavors. I just wish they had a bigger location. Every time I go there’s something cool happening, this last time we visited they were filming for the travel channel. But it also makes the wait longer. Usually about an hour wait. But the food comes quick and is consistent!
I'd give the food a 4 if you're into very rich tasting food however the customer service SUCKED, not to mention there was a piece of hair in my butter.
Initially I was very excited to come here because of the reviews I've heard and read however, my visit was a pure disappointment.
First off, the host was rude. When I asked for a change in table because we were at a group table with strangers and I wanted to spend alone time with my boyfriend since it was his birthday. I asked the waitress could we move to a table that just cleared that had a party of 2. She replied "Well he was a cop so unless you show a badge NO". Really? That response was completely unprofessional.
Secondly, a piece of hair was in my butter for my French toast. Not sure if it was served with hair or if it was the guy sitting next to us hair. Either way it was disgusting and no compensation occurred for the inconvenience.
For starters, we went early in a Saturday morning (before the rush) and were seated immediately. Our waiter, Tusiime, was PHENOMENAL!!!!! Our food came out fast, was fresh, and delicious. Everyone was incredibly friendly, setting an awesome atmosphere. Can't say enough good things about the overall experience. Must try!!!!!
The food is just normal and good, but the staff is exceptional. Everyone was friendly, from the hostess to the servers to the cleanup crew. Always kept our drinks full and the food was delivered quickly. We got the strawberry French toast with scrambled eggs and the green city omelette. The food was good, nothing extraordinary. If you are looking for a quiet meal this is not your place. Community seating and the volume level is extremely noisy. All in all a good experience.
The absolute best french toast I've ever had! I drive over an hour to eat here, sometimes more than once a week. The wait can be long, especially on the weekends, so plan your time wisely. There are two Starbucks within walking distance of the restaurant that we go to for coffee too pass the wait time. But always definitely worth the wait!
The best brunch I've ever had, hands down! The French toast is perfect, and that maple butter is downright addicting. Also, the fluffiest eggs you'll have. Great service. Make yourself happy and go to Batter & Berries!!
Such excellent food. The atmosphere and the people just topped my eating experience. Get there early because it fills up quickly. Bravo to the chef's vision of food options. I'll recommend this place to all my DC friends who are visiting Chicago.
This was my first visit to Chicago and Batter & Berries was my favorite restaurant. This place was constantly in motion. It was rather loud and noisy, but that only added to the fun/ friendly atmosphere. The wait staff was AWESOME. They told jokes and their rapport with the customers made the visit more fun. I will always visit when I come to Chicago.
Took them a while to get us water (Maybe 10 minutes) but after that orders were taken and food came promptly and was delicious. Must try the CINNAMON ROLL FRENCH TOAST! Definitely would go as prices were not to expensive either. They also offer a breakfast combo which is a very good deal and tasted great.
French Toast with exotic embellishments. Does not appear to be dipped in egg/milk batter. I like mine to have more of an eggy/milk flavor. .y daughters do not. Portions generous. Can make it without salt. Which is a blessing for me. Parking is metered. We got there at opening and by the time we left it was crowded.
Any wait that is more than 45 min to be seated is absolutely ridiculous. This place is way too small for the volume of people it serves. We waited nearly two hours to be seated..TWO HOURS. The only reason that we even decided to wait that long was because we were able to run a couple local errands within that time frame, but the wait time for customers is obscene and is a problem that needs to be rectified. Also, please educate your hostess on customer service. Despite how overwhelmed or busy you may be, an attitude when dealing with customers is uncalled for and unprofessional.
The food is overpriced and a little bland. I had the sweet potato waffle with chicken, which was pretty good, and an order of the champagne French toast which tasted like buttered toast triangles smothered in a sweet champagne topping. Not the traditional French toast texture that I’m used to, but it was still ok. My boyfriend had the crab omelet (which was a pretty large portion) and not only did he think it was it bland, but it seemed somewhat undercooked. Although our waitress was very sweet, prompt, and polite, we could tell she was already exhausted and it was about 1 in the afternoon. He didn’t want to make a fuss sending it back, so he ate his omelette. Less than 24 hours later, he’s sick with what seems to be food poisoning. As this omelette was (literally) the only thing he ate, we can infer that this is what made him sick.
For a $20 omelette, and a $70+ bill total, I am thoroughly disappointed. Once we were finally seated, I will say that service was prompt and everyone from the waitress to the busboy was very polite, but because of the food and the wait alone, we will absolutely not be back.
This is by far the best breakfast that my husband and I have ever eaten no exaggeration and we've been to many restaurants around the world!! It was our 8th wedding anniversary and our first time visiting Chicago so I was looking at some breakfast places to eat at while we were here and after seeing so many great reviews decided to check them out! I called prior to get more information about the hours etc. and was told that they fill up quickly on the weekends so to come as early as possible! We made it a point to be up and be there in time when they opened to avoid the long wait, but even as we pulled at opening time we saw a line outside door waiting for them to open, so we knew it has to something special, and it was!!! The service and hospitality were impeccable! It is also BYOB which was perfect as we had a bottle of champagne in the car!! So needless to say the mimosas were on deck! Special thanks to our server Timothy who recommended this absolutely delicious Jambalaya omelet with the Flight French Toast and homemade chicken sausage! Everything came out in a timely manner hot and fresh! Tim was extremely pleasant and personable and gave us nothing less than amazing service!! We also want to say thank you to the amazing manager Frederick who was a great host and made our visit extremely memorable from start to finish! If you are visiting Chicago you have to come here or if you live there and have never been you absolutely have to go I promise you won't be disappointed!! Next time we're in town I know where we'll be going! Thanks you guys for everything see you when we're back in Chi-Town!
It's always a great experience there. The food is great. The service is impeccable. Our server is the one that tells riddles. He is fun and he makes the experience even better. Go here you will not be disappointed.
Without question, this is my favorite place in Chicago for breakfast. I try to come here as often as possible. The prices are phenomenal for the food that you get too, which is really surprising because of the level of care placed in each dish. I've only had consistent meals here and the Cluck and Gravy is the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had. Treat yourself and come here ASAP
I was very upset with service here today. And I usually enjoy my visits here. It's cold near doors and I asked to be moved (because of cold) to place where some one had gotten up from. I was told you need more than 2 people to sit at table for 4 and back section was closed. (And I understand back section closed). Then in less than 5 min a couple of 2 was sitting where I asked to be moved to and denied because I was a party of 2. I asked to speak to manager because I was upset that I could not enjoy my meal because everytime the door open the cold air came my way. And if he was truly a manager he doesn't have good manager skills and he made me more mad at trying to explain ?, cause I still don't know what he was trying to say. I left an unhappy camper and I won't be returning anytime soon.
They go above and beyond to give great service. We loved our breakfast this morning for my birthday! We left very full! My wife really enjoyed the French toast flight. I loved the brisket hash. Working the coffee into the recipe is great! The gluten free buckwheat pancakes were delicious.
Well worth the wait! Service was excellent! The food is absolutely delicious! Would highly recommend this place to anyone. We visited on a Sunday and arrived around 9:30, we had an hour wait. And I would wait an hour again to eat here😊
This place is so good. They have the best chicken and waffles I've ever eaten. The services is also pretty amazing. Everyone is super helpful with suggestions and are very friendly. One downside would be the wait. They don't accept reservations and I've had to wait 45+ minutes both times I've been. However, the food is worth the wait.
Really good food and service. Food was delivered very quickly. I ordered the French toast flight and it was delicious. I will have to try some of the other items in the future. This place is really popular and gets really crowded during the weekend right from the time it opens. I wish it wasn’t so crowded, but other than that everything else was great.
One of my favorite brunch places in the city! The food is delicious the service is excellent and I love the creative dishes that they have.
My only criticism about this place is that the savory dishes are never anywhere near on par with the sweet dishes. I once ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and it was so salty I couldn't even finish it. After that ordeal I've stuck to the sweet dishes and have not been disappointed.
PLEASE BRING BACK THE SNICKERS FRENCH TOAST!!!! Seriously the best French Toast I've ever had!
Amazing. Super hard to get into because of its popularity but well worth the wait! Try the French toast flight and the cluck and goof for sure. Good coffee and friendly service makes it an all around wonderful experience.
This place is AMAZING!! We ordered the sweet potato waffles and chicken, the French toast flight, and ribeye omelette. Everything was delicious! The service was also fantastic: Shout out to Leslie. Be prepared to wait but it's so worth it.
Fantastic meal. I've had a lot of chicken and waffles in the city and this blew them all away. Fried chicken pieces inside of a sweet potato waffle. Nutmeg hot sauce drizzled over the nicely fried breast. Maple sugar butter provided the correct moisture.
Service was very fast. Waitress was excellent. Unisex bathrooms. Changing table. All natural products, no diet soda.
Get here early. Line forms quickly and regularly exceeds an hour on weekend brunch. We got the last open table at 845am on a Saturday.
Nestled in the condominiums and bustle of the narrow streets of the North Side, this restaurant is small in footprint but big on flavor profile! I had heard about this place for a few years but never got a chance to visit, and I must say it is definitely worth a trip and the wait!
The service was awesome- we had a very charismatic gentleman host who was telling jokes and engaging the surrounding tables while reciting the menu with such detail you wanted to try everything! The wait time was not too bad- we went midday on a Friday and it was a 30 minute wait. They text you though so you can leave or go to your cart and wait outside.
The food also matched the descriptions... Must try is the French toast. If you can't decide try the flight! The caramel French toast was beyond delicious! There's also so many unique dishes and new flavors added all the time.
Aside from the establishment itself, the typical North Side obstacles apply: no parking structure or lot available. It's all paid street parking, so it's a crapshoot depending on the day and time you visit.
Cheesy hash browns?! My first time here today, with a friend. I had the brisket with hash browns. They substituted my eggs for fresh fruit. I'm in love. The food was well prepared, the service was good, and the manager was amazing! He informed me of the marination process of the brisket. I'm coming back soon!
I have heard about this place and how good the food was. I was so excited to go and I must say it lived up to the hype. The food wasn't good, it was amazing!! We had the French toast sampler and shared it with our entire table, a morning appetizer to get us started, YUMMY and DELICIOUS. My meal the Salmon Crochet Eggs Benedict, OMG-melt in your mouth SCRUMPTIOUS 😍!!! My new favorite.
Now I know why everyone says this place is amazing.
Damn tasty food. Very friendly customer service. Our server asked if we wanted coffee, we said yes, and literally three seconds later someone else appears with coffee and water.
Came here for Sunday brunch. Very busy, as expected. They don't take reservations but you can leave your name and phone number so they can text you when your table is ready. We were told about 1.5 hour wait so we went up a block to a bar for drinks. Got a text about 45 minutes later.
It was a bit noisy for conversation. They were also playing some dance music. It was a good vibe but it seemed like an amusing clash with the giant flower photos and yellow/purple color theme.
Definitely recommend the French toast flight, if not the Super flight, which includes the French toast of the day. I can see why they claim to be world famous 👍
It was a good idea for the four of us to share the super fight and get our own entrees. We definitely left with entree leftovers. The French toast was all devoured though.
Our server was very friendly and polite. She offered to split the check among different credit cards.
After we paid, someone (owner/manager?) came over to quickly ask how everything was and to wish us a good day.
Not one bad experience here!
Metered street parking only. Gluten free options available.
The food is amazing, best brunch around hands down. And obviously the French toast is superb. (Get the super flight if you want to try them all).
Service is also excellent once you're seated. Pleasant, engaging and fun.
Problem is they don't take reservations and it's a small place so at noon on a Saturday the wait can get up to 2.5 hours+ for a table and yet they close at 3.... Plan your visit and expect at least an hour wait at any time of the day.
Definitely a place to go to! Breakfast is amazing. So many options. A good place for sweets lovers especially. It gets packed so be mindful of arrival time. Staff is nice.
Amazing food!!!!! Was in town for the weekend and decided to stop by on the way home. Best decision! Great service! Expect a wait as it is a very popular spot. Best pancakes I have ever tasted. Can't wait to come back and I haven't left yet.
If I could put down six stars I would give them an extra star. All of the food has a great mixture of of flavors and the staff are all great. It is BYOB so come prepared. I have visited a few times and I am always impressed. The lemon pepper lobster Omelette was a special last time I visited and I was blown away by how good the dish tasted. The lobster were big chunks from the claw. It came with hash browns on the side which were good. The chicken and waffles are also delicious, the chicken has a hot sauce coating that goes well with the sweet waffles.
BEST BREAKFAST I'VE EVER HAD! This place was a last minute decision before we left Chicago and I'm so glad that we went. I wish I tried it earlier so I could have gone again. The food is exceptional. We had all the specials: Apple pie French toast, lobster omelette with asparagus, and salmon croquette eggs Benedict. It was amazing. The Apple pie French toast came with a Maple butter that was so good! The service was really good too. The place is small and there are definitely lineups. This is the place where all the locals come to. Wild berry is so popular but I would recommend this place instead!
This is a fun place to grab breakfast in a cool neighborhood. I had a hard time choosing between two specials - the lobster omelette and the pineapple rum French toast. I usually opt for savory, but figured I’d change my routine and go with sweet since French toast is their signature breakfast item. The French toast was delicious! I don’t think I would have gone wrong with the omelette either. My server, Tusiime, was attentive and fun. He asked me a riddle every time he came over. The coffee was good, I was able to get seated right away, this was a great breakfast treat.
Amazing service! Scrumptious and unique flavors! Our server gave us funny riddles to solve and made us feel like we were his best friends. Great time. Highly recommend! No wonder there is always a line of people out front waiting for their shot at a delicious meal.
Great place, the kids loved the chocolate chip pancakes and our server was amazing. I can't recall his name but, he periodically interacted with my children and nieces, asking riddles and life skill questions. The other staff were personable as well. I had the salmon and it was made with perfection.
As soon as we sat down we were served coffee and handed the menus after that it took a while ( a bit 15 minutes) to be served. Finally our server came to the table and he made up for the wait.
Outstanding server! (Tim)
This guy made this ecperiance so good. The breakfast was out of this world excellent. After we ordered the food was at the table in five minutes and looked amazing, tasted even better.
I recommend this place for breakfast and brunch. But get here early. The food and service is so good it packs up in a hurry.
Visiting from Philadelphia, there was a line at 1 in a Friday. I saw this place posted on IG, I was seated in 15 minutes. The waiter explaining the specials, made some recommendations and placed my order. My food came out fast, not over cooked and yummy. The hot sauce was good 👏🏾👏🏾, the French toast looked yummy wasn’t interested in the toppings. Great place, owner made rounds and checked on everyone. BYOB if you like, reasonable prices on juices to accompany mimosas.
This place is soooooooo amazing!!! It was my first time there last weekend and I had the lemon French toast and the Oreo French toast and it was delicious. The atmosphere is so great the owners come out and talk to you. The waiters are hilarious! The food was done shortly after we placed our order. BYOB so we had mimosas as well. I will be back when I’m back in town.
It's good. The creativity is amazing. However, the chicken and waffles weren't hitting. The chicken was divine, but the waffle had so much nutmeg it was not palpable and I left it on the plate. The french toast was great. I would give it one more try... during the week without the excessive wait.
First time here and service was great despite it being so busy. After eating the food though I can see why, the lemon french toast was superb and the chicken fajita omelette was delicious (though I wish they had folded the peppers into the omelette).I also got their famous chicken and waffles to go. Definitely come here if you're looking for breakfast/brunch on the Northside.
The menu on the table is not the only menu available. They do offer other specials depending on the season and what the chef would like to cook. I ordered a flight of the French toast, which displayed 6 different flavors of French toast like apple pie, blueberry, strawberry, pecan, and I think a plain. It was filling and delicious. I also enjoyed a special item that consisted of a shrimp omelette with shrimp gravy and cheese hash browns. It was very delectable with a wonderful spice in the background. The pork chop was good, but the flavor palate was very light. There is a one drink minimum per table for BYOB or a bottle fee. Each dish was about $15, so with the French toast, shrimp omelette, and pork chop meal total was about $60. The drinks are about. $4 each. All in all it was a nice experience and I would go back without drinks.
The French toast here is. to. die. for. Where have you ever even heard of French toast flights? The super flight includes whatever French toast flavor is on offer as the special that day. It happened to be pear when I went. The portions are reasonably big. The staff are pretty relaxed and friendly. There's a communal table in the middle right at the front for singles. Service is quick and staff are all friendly and relaxed.
As the reviews suggest, this place is amazing. But it's important to qualify _how_ amazing. Everything is "homemade", but what that actually means is that care is taken in every item that leaves the kitchen. Eggs? Perfectly fluffy. The bread in the French toast? Moist and flavorful. Sausage? Great consistency with a good heat. Everything is amazing.
But that's just the food! The staff is incredibly friendly (our server kept asking people riddles for kicks), the atmosphere is fun. It's just a great place to have brunch, and I can't recommend it more.
Things to know:
1) Their menu is online, their specials are on Instagram
2) The wait can be an hour on the weekdays and two hours on the weekends.
3) The French toast flight is everything people say it is, but it's not likely you'll go wrong with anything on the menu.
4) The food isn't inexpensive, but it's probably the best you can get for the quality. I've had way pricier brunches that weren't half as good.
Great food and service. I had their La Colombe Brisket Hash, which was delicious and too much food for one sitting. My girlfriend had the K.I.S.S. Wrap, which she said was excellent. We split a half order of blueberry French toast, which was creamy, fruity, and had great consistency. Our server was a very friendly man who asked us some riddles for fun, which was a nice addition to our experience.
My only issue was the 45 minute wait, but considering that is a sign of popularity, that's fine with me.
This place is fantastic! Food and service are top notch. One of my favorite brunch places in the city. Their crab cakes Benedict and French toast are amazing.
My sister and I went on a Saturday morning and it was very crowded. The wait was 45mins before we were seated. The waitress was very polite and energetic but she was swamped with a lot of tables. The energy in the place was loud and energetic, there were families, couples and small groups seated throughout the restaurant. The food was okay even though we didn't order the waffles. I would go back but maybe on a day when the crowd isn't so big.
This is hands down the best brunch place we have been to in all of Chicago in the 3+ years we have lived here. The service is so fantastic. The food is absolutely incredible. I can’t recommend Batter and Berries any more highly. We will definitely be back (probably tomorrow 😂😍) I love everything about this special, unique restaurant!!
This place is fantastic. The service is tremendous thanks to a really friendly staff. The food is great. My wife and I just stumbled onto it this week and already ate here 3 times for breakfast or lunch. You cannot go wrong. It has quickly become our “go to” spot.
Great Food! I've never been disappointed here. The food is outstanding and the customer service matches the food. I usually order the Chicken and Gouffre because I enjoy it so much but my wife usually switches it up and orders one of the specials. When she orders something different I usually eat a lot of that and that's how I get the best of both worlds. The food is always so fresh and unique. One of the waiters there is great at his job. He is very attentive and he jokes with you and challenges you with riddles when he comes to your table. Don't miss out on this gem. But make sure you choose your time to go carefully, they are usually super busy.
Very delicious food! However, the line is crazy long, and the bathroom is extremely tiny and dirty. I'm not sure why they don't update the bathroom, especially since the restaurant is so cute! I would give it 5 stars but the bathroom was scary. When you do come here to eat, order the shrimp omelet, it was yummy, and make sure you don't have to go to the bathroom.
Batter and Berries is a great breakfast stop for anyone that lives in or is visiting the city. Coffee and water are always full and the staff is friendly. There are many specials and menu items to choose from and the food was satisfactory. The only complaint I may have is that the music was too loud and it was a bit difficult to communicate with the waitress. Otherwise I would certainly recommend.
This place is amazing. It has THE BEST french toast! I have tried many french toasts so far and none of them has been so delicious with well balan and ed sweetness. The service is good as well. Our server Mia was very pleasant and attentive. My husband and I will definitely come back to this place.
The delicious food served at Batter & Berries is just one of the reasons this place is very popular. The house music playing throughout your visit is mixed by someone who works at B&B, and it feeds the spirit even as the food nourishes the body. When your tongue and taste buds can dance along with the music, it makes a great experience. The wait staff was energetic and kind; the manager also visited every table to ensure that the dining experience was enjoyable for all during our visit. We will definitely be back.
I absolutely love this place ! I live in the south suburbs and I drive all the way up north for their food. The service and staff are absolutely amazing! Best breakfast/brunch place in Chicago. I definitely recommend this place. If you haven't been here you're missing out !
Came with my best friend and thoroughly enjoyed. The food was amazing and the environment was quite fun. Mia was so friendly and super suggestive with items from the menu. She was amazing and we will definitely be returning regularly! The manager even touched base with us multiple times to check on us. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere.
THE FRENCH TOAST FLIGHT. Seriously, it's the best thing ever invented. I have a small appetite but a big eye for trying new things. This was the best way to have it all 😍 The french toast flavors were all tasty twists on classic flavors, and done so so well. Not overwhelmingly sweet or syrupy, and a subtle complexity of flavors - just absolutely perfect! My friend had the Cluck-n-Gaufre (sweet potato waffle with fried chicken) and it was amazing as well! This is definitely in my top 3 breakfast spots in Chicago!!
I was so impressed with this place, this was me and my fiancé first time going and it will not be our last. The service was phenomenal and the food exceeded our expectations. Nadine was the best she explained everything to us and she was even more excited to talk about this place. She loves her job and the food and I can definitely see why. Five stars all around.
My top scene for tasty Brunch. It's so savory. Fast and courteous service. This place has a nice design. I see why this place has so many good reviews.
Neat place, friendly staff, great food. We showed up 10 minutes after opening on a Sunday morning - showed up at the right time! It was packed by the time we left! We were in awe of how fast they were moving, keeping people full of coffee, serving food, clearing tables for the next patrons. Our food was very good. So many other things I would have liked to try that looked good at other tables! Neat atmosphere and decor. My picky kids did not like their pancakes as much - but did eat most of it. The pancakes were a little dense, but had great flavor and I loved the pop of lemon in it.
One of my favorite lunch spots! Great meal concepts, every time I go there's something different to love. Awesome service. Weekends are very busy, the wait can be up to an hour or more and there's nowhere inside to wait but they do give a courtesy text when your table is ready so if the weather is nice it's a great experience regardless of the wait.
Officially my new favorite restaurant for a delicious breakfast. I got the french toast and a side of fresh fruit and it was amazing. It was a bit crowded, but we were seated quickly. I can't remember my waitresses name but she was soooo polite.
Tasty breakfast, great coffee, buzzing atmosphere and fantastic service. We had breakfast here midweek while on a short visit to Chicago. The wait was approx 30-40 minutes, but it gave us the chance to wander the neighborhood. The menu is set and doesn’t offer much flexibility which was a problem for our picky (hungry) tween. However, the staff including the manager were all very welcoming and friendly. Try the French toast flight and one of the deconstructed omelets.
Worst place to go when you’re hungry
Despite what you would expect given the reviews and long waiting lines, this is NOT a place to visit and certainly not a place to eat.
You can’t make a reservation. You have to go and get yourself on the waiting list. That in itself is OK, as long as the staff would be honest about the actual waiting time. We were told that we would have to wait 90 minutes, but probably less. It took 2 hours and 20 minutes when we were asked to enter the restaurant. It then took them another hour to serve our orders. The food was OK, but nothing special. Certainly not worth the tremendous wait. As this is a BYOB place many guests take this opportunity to empty multiple bottles to kill the time (and get louder after each glass). I wish I had brought my booze to lighten my suffering.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn at River North and the attendant recommended this place to us. We planned on going somewhere else but changed our minds once shown the menu. First of all, it’s black owned which is a plus for me. Second, the food is AMAZING! They have five different flavors of french toast and I loved all of them. The service is great! All around I absolutely adored the experience. When I come back to Chicago, I will definitely be back!
Batters and Berries is popular for good reason. If you try weekends, you can be looking at hour plus waits. Instead, pop into the restaurant during the week where you can get french toast that is so good, you will think they invented it. The steak is sumptuous with a smooth, rich sauce, and you can also enjoy restaurant specialties like lobster omelets. You will be greedy when you go. This place gets four stars, however, because this sinfully delightful food has to be enjoyed while listening to naked, loud bass booming music, which makes it hard to do anything but eat. Fortunately, the food's excellent.
The wait was ridiculously long for a party of 7 people. They need to expand or have a better system for big parties. But the food was amazing as always and the wait staff is very friendly. GET A BIGGER PLACE PLEASE!! 😐😊😍
This restaurant was amazing. Arguably one of the best breakfasts I've had. The food was phenomenal with unique specials like the Caribbean pork chop which was so good!! Our waiter was hilarious, very lively and full of jokes and riddles. He also went through the menu with us and gave us great suggestions. The french toast specials change every week. Peach cobbler was the special when I was here, it was amazing. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.
Really liked this place. They are doing a great job of Chicago baked goods. We have several small filled breads and a sandwich with sausage and cheese, and a US tea. After we ordered they heated the pastry in the oven and they came out hot and tasted fresh. All in all we liked it and would stop back. Service was friendly and helpful.
Super great food. I ate a lobster with poached eggs entree and man, it was beyond amazing. Not a single complaint from me. There was a little bit of a wait but I'm extremely happy for the experience I had. Great staff and great food!
The best French toast in town. Try the flight to give you various flavors options. The butter it is to die for.
Good coffee and great service.
There is always a wait so plan accordingly.
Con: The bathroom lacked upkeep.
Overall a great experience.
Food is great and the restaurant has very unique dishes. Always busy but we were able to sit pretty quickly. Service was on point but forgot syrup for the French toast. Overall, excellent.
What can I say, this place is amazingly delicious. The wait is ridiculous though. Our wait this time around was 1:45. Last time it was 2:15 and guess what?...read this and 2022 more
