How would you rate Cutlass Grille?
I picked the Cutlass Grille just by doing a "restaurants in Chesapeake" Google search. It sounded good, so we drove from Yorktown to Chesapeake to meet friends there. We were greeted immediately, and our waitress, Jewel, was there very quickly to take our orders. Jewel not only was knowledgeable about what the restaurant offered, but she was super friendly! The food was absolutely stupendous!! I had the pulled pork sandwich with 2 sides--steamed cabbage & FF. My husband had the brisket with rice & beans and collards. He said the collards were just as good if not better than his mom's....and that's saying something. He loved his whole meal, and I loved my whole meal. Our friends had the fish & shrimp with sides of baked beans, macaroni & cheese, and FF. Everything we had was super flavorful and super fresh. We will make the trek from Yorktown again to enjoy more of this fabulous restaurant's dishes!!! When you go, don't be in a rush, as they are on "island time" ... which was just fine with us!!! The place was very clean and inviting.
I enjoy good eating and good food and cutless grill was it! It has to be good or I won't go back, the collards and mac and cheese off the chain and the jerk chicken sooo tender keep doing What ever y'all doing! Fay n Chesapeake
Awesome - great atmosphere, totally kid friendly - and most importantly the food was awesome. If you live in Hampton Roads, you should absolutely make a trip to the Cutlass Grille.
The place is a Lil outdated so, dress casual but the good is very good. Everything from scratch, you can tell that the cook really puts his heart into the food. Definitely a must visit.
Cutlass Grille has become one of my weekly lunch stops. The jerk chicken and ribs are fantastic, but the brisket is my favorite. The sides are all great and the Jamaican patties are hands down the best I've ever had. Shawn and his staff are all friendly and they're moving even closer to my house soon so it'll be a struggle to not head over and stuff myself every day.
Excellent Jamaican food. The rice and peas are so good and the jerk chicken is my favorite
Excellent food! I've had the Jerk Chicken a few times while I was visiting the area and each time it was cooked to perfection! I told a colleague that they manage to take the chicken off the cooker at the peak of juiciness. I do with the jerk season had some heat, but the flavor is superb nonetheless.
Perhaps my favorite thing there though are the Pepper Pot Mussels. The first time I ate there I was looking for BBQ and ended up eating some of the best mussels I've ever had anywhere....
Nice yard spot mon.... Food and sips remind me of JA.
The OX tail is the best. The owner, his family and employees are all friendly and make you feel welcomed. Love the new location.
I have been coming to Cutlass since they were on greenbrier and the food has always been amazing. I would recommend the trio slider with a side of their mac n cheese
This place has the best jerk chicken I've ever tasted! The baked beans are phenomenal as well as the plantain foster, the drinks and the service are great. My family started making it a family tradition of having Sunday lunch here after church. One Sunday, however, we arrived and they were closed. I was severely disappointed because I realized I'd never be able to eat here again because it's just too far to travel during the week. I wish they'd open back on Sundays :-(
Me and my family ate here today after hearing a lot about this restaurant at work nevertheless it was like a dream come true. I had the oxtails, cabbage, rice and beans to include strawberry lemonade. I confess with my mouth and my stomach that it was marvelous and I had to personally tell the owner Sean how good it was in the midst of eating it. My fiance enjoyed her food as well which was the brisket, mac and cheese and string beans to include raspberry lemonade. My daughter who is 4 yrs old went back and forth between the both of our plates with the exception of putting a dent in my cabbage.
I WILL BE A FREQUENT CUSTOMER HERE!!!
One of the only places I would drive to from the Oceanfront to have dinner at. The dark meat jerk chicken and ribs are my favorite dishes by far, but I haven't had a bad dish yet.
The best Caribbean food anywhere. Period!!! Great service and a fantastic, family atmosphere.
I've been going to cutlass for years, and the food has always been good. Good enough to cope with the prices, but now its to the point I will never go back again. My problem is the price per portion, I use to get 2 meals for the price. Now I get smaller portions; barely enough to fill the to-go section, for nearly 50 percent cost increase. Happy time in portsmouth great food great price. Mp island great food great price. Due to the raping of the consumer I will never go again.
Authentic Jamiacan Food. I have been going since they were on Greenbrier Rd. & when they expanded OMG, what a spot. The food, is always consistent. The Curry Chicken, Oxtails, stewed fish, & Jerk Salad are my Favs topped off with the Strawberry Lemonade. I love their food & it's worth the price. Nice music & great atmosphere.
The first time my husband and I went it was a great experience. However, my sister and mother drove from MD (3+ hours) for the weekend and we decided to take them there for dinner that Fri night. We showed up at 9pm (they close at 10p). The manager refused to seat us and told us they couldn't accommodate our party of 4 and that they close "promptly at 10". The manager did not offer one thing to encourage us to return. Then as we walked out it was quite disturbing to see a couple walk in and get seated. I will also mention I felt very discriminated against. As much as I loved the food the first go round, the blatant refusal to serve us the second time by the manager will keep me from ever returning.
This is the best Jamaican food since I've visited Jamaica. Vanshelle was an awesome waitress and i will be coming back..
The service was great!! Food EVEN BETTER!!!! 👍👍👍👍
The Cutlass Grille is me and my boyfriend's go to restaurant and we go very often (about once every 2 weeks or so). The atmosphere is colorful and lively with live music on Fridays and Saturdays. The jerk chicken is to die for and I love the spiciness of the rub. I also reccomend the chicken wings, as they are some of the best wings I have ever had.
I had a warm and friendly outing. It was my first time and enjoyed the special on that day which was the crab sweet potato. Yummy.
Staff was courteous and offered prompt service. Great place to relax and enjoy.
I was at a party where the food was catered from this place. I am usually disappointed when someone says Caribbean food because I can seldom recognise any dishes. I finally learnt they should specify the island because the food is all different island to island. I am from Trinidad and Tobago. The food was delicious! Somebody really did a great job with the chicken. I might even call it Stew Chicken ;) The cabbage was great and I really liked the rice and beans. Have to hunt them down now even if it means driving an hour.
I love this place. Cutlass Grille is the place to get Jamaican cooking in Hampton Roads. I get the jerk chicken, curry chicken, stewed chicken, brisket, and barbecue... just not at the same time. The sides are amazing too. The mac and cheese and beans with brisket are to die for. Service is fast and they offer lunch specials.
We came in at 8 in the evening and the lights were on full blast. They should be dimmed in the evening. Pretty basic stuff. It was very unrelaxing. We weren't welcomed in and the hostess stand is oddly placed in the middle of the restaurant with no hostess. Hostess finally shows up and greets us with "We close in an hour but no rush". Should have left then. Brisket was so tough it took a very long time to fully chew it. Was told by the owner it's supposed to be like that? The sides and the presentation weren't impressive at all. All the drinks look exactly alike with the same garnishes, taste bad, and are poorly made by an inexperienced lazy bartender but cost as much as a drink at Cheesecake Factory. The bar looks cheap with glass being held up with Rubbermaid Fast Track shelf brackets. Menus look like they were made by a 10 year old with an inkjet printer and some self laminate sheets. The walls leading up to the bathroom are dirty and have marks all over them and the bathrooms are disgusting. If they're too lazy to clean the bathrooms I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. There's no reason for the restaurant to not be clean as there were 3-4 employees behind the bar doing absolutely nothing the entire time we were there. Our waitress was very good even though the entire restaurant was working against her.
I unfortunately wasnt able to dine in & experience that aspect but everything about the food was excellent as well as the friendly manner in which i was greeted . The place was busy for a wed afternoon when i went .My only problem was when i went with my daughter on a monday they were closed!!! Bestill my heart we both had our heart set on curry chicken just like my ex used to make!! Just happened to run into a very nice gentleman outside who apologized that they were closed recognizing my uniform from OTH he was very friendly and apologetic. We will be back just not on Sun or Mondays!!! 😉
Enjoyed a great lunch with my mom and sister. Great atmosphere and welcoming staff...The food was superb!! We will be back!!!
Food was amazing, staff was very friendly and restaurant was clean! Will go again!
The food was excellant. We had jerk chicken with cabbage and mac and cheese. The loaf bread was nice and warm. I had the beef brisket with string beans and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was the bomb. The service was great.
I loved the live music they had the night I went (Friday night). The atmosphere was pleasant, and the food was good. I had the smoked ribs, jerk drumstick chicken, and my husband had the brisket. The smoked ribs were amazing; it wasn't like fall-off-the-ribs but certainly yummy. The jerk chicken, I was told, is a popular choice of meat but I didn't like it all that much... It wasn't spicy or taste like the staple jerk seasoning you know. The brisket my husband had was really good also. So, we would definitely come back to try more items. I'd definitely get the whole rack of ribs next time.
Best food I've ever tasted! The management and staff work hard to insure that the customers are comfortable and the food is cooked to perfection. I have recommended this restaurant to many people, and have always received positive feedback. I can't imagine anyone passing up the opportunity to dine there!
My first time here and I think its probably the best West Indian food I've eaten since my mom's cooking. I am from the West Indies and I urge and encourage all Americans and from the West Indies to eat here. They are all such a humble and friendly staff as well. Shawn you are the Man!!! Blessings.
The FOOD is truly amazing everything you taste is wonderful!!! The atmosphere is GREAT! The owners are very nice and friendly. Trust and believe you will not be DISAPPOINTEMENT at all. They give you more than enough food on your PLATE!!!! LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!
The food is good and probably one of the best Caribbean foods in the area. Don't go during lunch if you want ribs or their homemade bread. The green beans are very good with their smoked salt, and the jerk chicken is excellent for people who can handle a little spice. Don't forget to order the chocolate cake for dessert as it is delicious!
I just recently visited this establishment within the last hour. I read the reviews including the negative ones. After making my own personal visit this place I definitely give it 5 stars. One comment said there wasn't a hostess to greet and the hostess stand is misplaced. I totally disagree. The hostess was not only there but also leaned around her stand to ask if I was doing Togo bc the line was about 4 people long. The young ladies behind the bar were not only beautiful but also were kind sweet smiling and attentive. I ordered the pulled pork with the collard greens and mac n cheese. It was pretty good. I didn't think to ask for bbq sauce but I'm overall satisfied with everything.
Wonderful food, huge portions, great atmosphere, on Saturday night there was a live band. Lovely atmosphere! It was a wonderful place to celebrate my birthday! Reservations went smooth! The husband and wife owners are very professional. They checked on me at my party. Thanks a lot.
We have stayed several times. The staff is outstanding, particularly Sharon at the front desk and Perry in the dining area. You can depend on them to make sure your stay is like to want. Friendly and courteous.
When to the Egg Bistro for breakfast with a friend and really enjoyed the place. The portions were more than I could eat and the food was very good. The location was convenient for me and I would go back.
You have to go here for the Friday Lunch special. Their fish and chips is amazing! Monster portions, you will most likely be asking for a take home box because you can't finish this meal. It's so so good!
Great restaurant!! My husband and I have had the brisket and oxtail twice now, and we loved it both times! Excellent side dishes as well. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is very nice, and the chef/owner (I think) came around to each table on one of our visits. I love that! Definitely a must try:)
This place was busy, the food was great! The Staff and our waitress was really friendly. They were playing music that was not too loud and the atmosphere was relaxing. I will definitely go again.
Haven't been here for years and I wasn't disappointed. The Egg Bistro was hopping when we arrived. There was a 15 minute wait and it was worth every minute. The service was outstanding even though our waitress was running from table to table. Food was good and plentiful. I recommend highly.
Nice and friendly staff. Came while they were extremely busy and unlike most places staff was cool under pressure it made the wait more sustainable. Was really impressed for their cleanliness. I look for this any time I go out to eat. Small company but big results. Very attentive. Will be back!!!
Higher end Caribbean food experience. Worth the pricey menu. Great environment. Professional staff. Delicious adult mixed drinks. Not your carryout. You can take out but do yourself a favor, dine in and order appetizers and dessert. I recommend the plantain nachos and/or plantain foster.
Have been here multiple times but it had been a while since I last came. I have to say everything was just as I remembered-----Outstanding!!!! Shawn has done an amazing job with this establishment and I know where to send anyone looking for delicious Carribean food with a great staff and welcoming atmosphere----Cutlass Grille
Had lunch there on 7/7/2017. The menu was somewhat limited. I had the jerk chicken sandwich that was served in a reasonable amount of time. The food portions were generous but overly done. I think the prices were in line according to the area. The true Jamaican flavor just was not there. Our server was well versed and courteous. The dessert menu was exceptionally good. Overall my dining experience was good but nothing to write home about. It just lacked authenticity.
Absolutely excellent in every way. First time visit today and this will be a must from now on. So glad it's near my house. Jerk pork was perfect, same for the sweet fries and amazing mac/cheese. Great decor and service. This is how you run a restaurant.
Had a great dinner here last night. Drinks and food were amazing. I had the lamb chop special as an appetizer and it was the best part of the whole meal. Great flavors and cooked perfectly! Got the honey mule and sorrel martini. Both tasted great but the martini tasted more like plain sorrel juice while the mule was strong but tasty. For entrees we got the brown stew snapper with collard greens and oxtails with macaroni and rice & peas. Both were good. The greens could have used more seasoning. Service was a bit slow but otherwise ok. I would definitely be back here for the lamb and drinks.
I visited Cutlass Grille for the first time today 6/06/17. I ordered the jerk pulled white meat chicken, rice and beans and collard greens got home and the chicken was wrong. Didn't want to drive all the way back in heavy traffic so I ate what I had. The meal was still very good but I think way over priced! Jerk chicken and two sides with no bread or drink for $15. THAT'S TOO MUCH!!.. I can get a meal just as good at a more reasonable price... Don't think I am going to return
This is by far one of the best restaurants I've been to! The food is great and you have to try the jerk shrimp tacos! The other thing that I truly love about this restaurant is the service. They are great and they definitely know how to treat their customers.
I come here every year with my family. The food, staff, and environment is a positive change from day-to-day establishments. The food is always fresh. Always. After 5 years, I've never had a dip in quality or service.
I highly recommend everyone to come enjoy the Cutlass experience.
Enjoyed the variety of food on the Sunday buffet. Service absolutely great and everything was delicious. It's been years since I've ate Oxtails, boy did I enjoy them. Was a little sticker shocked on the bill, but we all agreed it's a place we will certainly return and enjoy the food in the future. Hats off to the Chef/Owners/Waitress!
The food here is beyond fantastic! It is one my favorite places to eat. You always get a lot of food, quickly, with good service and a pleasant environment. The food is consistently high quality and perfectly seasoned. I LOVE it here.
Great place nestled in an unlikely strip mall area. As soon as you walk in the atmosphere is relaxed and the space was lovely. Started with boiled shrimp, generous 1/2 pound and followed with the special jerk shrimp tacos. Food was amazing and the owner / chef came out asking patrons how they liked the food. You don't get that often. I did see the jerk ribeye served to my neighbor at the bar and would have gladly accepted a sample but it was not to be...maybe next time.
My 1st time buffet!!
The SWEET potato hash...SCRUMPTIOUS.
THE ONLY PLACE THAT COOKS ASPARAGUS CORRECTLY.
THE PLANTAIN LASAGNA, A MUST EAT.
ALONG WITH BREAKFAST BUFFET, YOUR SALMON, PRIME RIB, PORK ROAST BELLY, CURRY CRABCAKE,
COLLARDS, CURRY CHICKEN, OXTAILS, RED BEANS N RICE, .AND MORE...
DESSERTS..HOME MADE GERMAN CHOC. CAKE...AND MORE..
PLEASE COME N SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS...WELL WORTH YOUR MONEY..
Excellent food and service. The Jerk Chicken was absolutely delicious! Chef/Owner came out to our table to ask how everything was. That was a nice touch. Very friendly atmosphere. Nice family owned small business. We will be back!
This is the best place to get jerk chicken outside of Jamaica! Local family run business. Casual atmosphere with good sevice. On weekend nights they have a live saxophonist or steel drum performer. They can also accomodate large parties.
I'm sad to say that as a visitor from FL. I tried the curry chicken and it was more like curry chicken soup served with black beans and rice. The flavor wasn't good either had to throw away half the dish not to mention my money. The funny thing I was advised to visit Cutlass Restaurant. Disappointed at how a Jamaican restaurant can not be authentic. The restaurant was nice bit if you're serving Jamaican food be authentic and keep your vibe of your restaurant fancy. Don't mess with the food. Sadly i will not visit again.
Hungry and was disappointed from Florida.
The food was amazing! Our server Ashley was very polite and professional. She got everything we asked for very quickly. The food came out extremely fast. I was very impressed. My fiancé and I will be returning soon! Thank you Cutlass Grille for an amazing experience.
I stopped in here a couple of weeks ago. Being my first visit I had no idea they had recently moved into the location, etc... The owner Sean came out and introduced himselfand we were quickly seated at a table. The facility looks brand new and impeccably clean. When you enter you see a bar on your left and then booths, with the open kitchen in the back. Then there's another more general dining area on the other side, which is where we were seated.
I decided to fully immerse myself in the culture of the meal and when it came time for drinks to be ordered I selected a Jamaican Kola Champagne which tasted like a creme soda. It was very good on a hot summer evening. After going over the menu I had a tough time narrowing things down. There are so many good looking choices here. I ended up selecting the Curry Shrimp with Rice and told them to make it hot.
I have to say that I was not prepared for the steak platter of wonderful that appeared before me a short time later. There were I think 7 large butterflied shrimp on a bed of rice and vegetables. Folks this is food perfection and Sean is on top of his game. I ate every last bit of it and frankly being the glutton that I am could have had some more. You have to try this.
When we were finishing things up I inquired about a lunch menu and the said that what they normally do for a lunch special is take one of there dinner entree's and make a lunch sized portion and price. That works for me. I haven't been back for lunch yet... But I will be... Soon.... Very soon...
Phenomenally good!! Everything had so much flavor, and was well prepared. Very nice atmosphere, and great service, too - a good place for a date night, or casual meal. I can't wait to go back!
Always always great! Food is the best and something you can experience anywhere else in Hampton Roads. The staff are very professional and friendly and the service is quick.
I've been here several times and the food is always consistently good! How good is it? Well my wife isn't a fan of Caribbean, but every time we go here she cleans the plate!
Interesting enough I live in the community right behind the plaza where the restaurant is located. Have been there for almost 2 decades and haven’t really shopped or dined in Knells Ridge until today. I was actually heading to the seafood place I saw advertised in the junk mail I received a week ago and saw that they were located 3 doors down. Being a West Indian, of course I chose the Cutlass Grille route. I have to say I was happy that I decided to walk in. The staff was friendly and the was restaurant clean, bright and airy. And the food, simply delicious. I was not greeted by a manager or an owner as what I would expect of a local eatery, but my server was attentive and friendly nonetheless. I had a great experience and will be back with family and friends.
I love dining in the restaurant. The food was great. I had the pulled pork, jerk chicken, cabbage , mac and cheese, red beans and rice and baked beans. This is by far the best food for the price. The hostess and waitress were very polite. I love the service. Oh yes, I did have dessert ...the bread pudding was the best bread pudding I ever had. Please leave some for me. Thank you Cutlass Grille for an exceptional dining out experience. I will definitely be back ASAP!
I LOVED the CUTLASS. I had the brisket. AMAZING! Rice and beans, cabbage, coco bread delicious. Lovely atmosphere. Great staff. Owner greeting so appreciated.
They are overpriced the jerk chicken salad was $12 skimpy with one chicken breast the oxtails and rice was also price ridiculous , and had no flavor with a little bit of meat... MP's is way better and way less expensive! Wouldn't eat there again, and to add insult to injury...they are super slow.
One of my favorite places to eat in all of Hampton Roads. The owners and staff are so nice and friendly. The food is wonderful. By far the best place to go to get authentic Jamaican cuisine. I highly recommend the jerk ribeye. The jerk chicken, curry chicken, and curry goat are also great choices. There are also plenty of great desserts to choose from as well. Additionally, if you enjoy adult beverages I suggest trying the rum punch, a traditional Jamaican drink.
I'm from the Virgin Islands and I love Caribbean food. Cutlass Grille is one of my favorite places to visit when I want some island food and don't want to cook it myself. I love the way they fused Caribbean flavors with a twist of American cuisine to create a unique flavor. Yummy stuff! If you want a taste of the islands visit and enjoy👌🏽
First experience was a good one. We will be back!
UPDATE: The food is above average but the price is simply too high for what you get. Probably won't be coming back very often. Two dinners to go should not cost me just under $50.
The atmosphere. The food taste. The menu. The staff. The price. The experience. Stellar.
Rib tips=very healthy sized, smoky all the way through. Not greasy and fatty, but purely superbly smoked. Macaroni and cheese=could be called cheese and macaroni, awesomeness. Daily specials make this a tempting daily visit.
Having the owner(?) Visit every table to make sure everything was satisfactory...unheard of in 2018. Great person too.
Again, an experience. Top notch.
I was really craving Jamaican food but I didn’t know where To go. I didn’t want MPs. So a coworker of mine told me about cutlass grill and that I would love it . So me and my husband decided to give it a try and we loved it. We both had the Oxtails cabbage potato salad beans and fried plantains. Definitely will be coming back. The atmosphere was pleasant and the waitress was very polite and professional.
There's aren't enough words to describe hooooowwwww amazing this place is! Oxtails, greens, mac n cheese, baked beans, sweet tea.... it's all worth it. Great atmosphere!
So first of all, I made a reservation in their private room for a party of 20-25 people for my husbands 45th Birthday on 9/15/18. When I made the reservation I was under the assumption that our party would have the entire room to ourselves and not have to pay a reservation fee because I was not told any different. So I called them to reschedule the party due to Hurricane Florence for 9/22/18 @ the same time but was told there was a reservation already booked for 5pm. Ok that’s fine, but then the guy says did you already pay the reservation fee. “Ugh what reservation fee sir”????? I ask to speak with the same lady I initially spoke with to schedule the party & she says it was a miscommunication there is a fee of $50.00 an hour to book the room exclusively and the $50.00 is NOT applied to your bill & you DON’T get it back!!!!! REALLY LADY!!!! This was so unacceptable & frustrating because this should have been said initially. I will never visit Cutlass Grille again and I will surely mention to all my family and friends that they are very unorganized!!!!!!
The food is plentiful and delicious. The servers are polite and friendly. The prices are great. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Jamaican restaurant in Chesapeake, to be honest. Now I know where to eat when I’m down there. Wish they’d open a restaurant in D.C. or Prince George’s County, Maryland. I’d be there all the time!!
A taste of home! Being from NYC it's very refreshing to find authentic Jamaican food right here in Chesapeake. Great location, friendly staff, and REAL Caribbean food!
Amazing one of my favorite spots to visit when in Va Beach/Chesapeake area. Fresh, clean, food and lovely amviance and diverse crowd.
Food is always good here. Various other southern options too. Great try for regular Caribbean cuisine patrons and those looking just to try. Good music too.
Service was great. Food was amazing. O you have to try their Strawberry Lemonade as your drink. Delicious! Oxtails Mac n cheese and Cabbage 😍👍💯
Fabulous meal, Outstanding customer service, Enjoyable atmosphere. My favorite Caribbean restaurant. Since I can't go home to T&T or New York this is the next best.
When I tell you Cutlass Grill is a great place to eat! You have go there, great food and a wonderful environment. Me and Husband absolutely love it.
The food is good and servings are large but it is overpriced. I got the Rasta Pasta dish that had linguine, peppers, onions, six shrimp, and grilled chicken and it was $26. Our server was friendly and personable but nothing happened quickly. This was our second visit and we may return for a lunch but probably not dinner.
The BEST Jamaican food EVER! This place is a the real deal and offers more than just the traditional Jamaican fare. Please try everything on the menu you will NOT be disappointed!
Awesome food. Friendly staff and fast service. Lunch portions were just right for a quick lunch. Will definitely have to go back to try some of the other dishes!
Food here is absolutely amazing so for that alone I would give it 5 stars, unfortunately the service is horrible. Cutlas Grille was great a few years back and it looks like they’ve changed staff and their standards along with it. The inconsistency is what is the most frustrating. I come by specifically for certain dishes, one being their jerk lamb chops, and every time I order them it’s always a different story as to why it’s missing part of the order, and then a hassle to get what you’re paying for. The hassle and not getting what you pay for is beginning to make it sadly not worth stopping by anymore.
While the food is pretty good, their prices are WAY too high. Shame on them! Not to mention, some of the servers could be a little more pleasant, you are after all catering to the public.
Great food! The oxtails or lamb chops are delicious and good sides. There carrot cake is great!
One of my favorite cuisines is Jamaican and since moving to The Hampton Roads area I have been on the look out for a place. Cutlass grill came up on Yelp...read this and 333 more
