How would you rate Beans & Cornbread?
I ordered a cup of their Louisiana Style Gumbo and a side of Macaroni and Cheese to go during lunch time. The service was great and the food came quick.
The gumbo was really really good. The flavors were really nice. However, the macaroni and cheese had too much black pepper and not enough cheese. I would probably go back for their Gumbo.
All around excellent. Amazing food, and just as wonderful service. Our server was very sociable and helpful. After an order mixup that made it to the bill, I was personally given the difference back, after I didn't even notice that I paid extra for it.
Entrees run around $15-20 with your choice of sides. I tried the shrimp and grits, roasted chicken, collard greens, country corn, rice and beans, and Mac and cheese. All of it was excellent.
Drinks are a bit pricey. Around $7-10 for specialty martinis, and simple mixed drinks are only a tad bit cheaper than that. They've got a pretty good full service bar though.
Can't recommend this place enough. You won't regret it!
I love sweet potato muffins! The service is great I just wish it was bigger.
Comfort food at its finest.....i couldn't try everything on the menu (next time)... my choices boiled down to: collard greens, rib tips , sweet cornbread and red beans and rice..spot on flavor--just the way momma used to make it.
After watching a cooking segment on them this morning on Fox 2 (Detroit), we decided to bring home some food from Beans ^ Cornbread. It took a little while for the food to get ready, but then it was a lot of food. In the mean time, I had a good time talking with the staff. In the end, the bill was a little high, but we all felt it and the wait was worth it. The wait didn't feel as long because the staff was friendly and engaging. I would gladly get take out from Beans & Cornbread again, and I think I'd have an even better time eating at the restaurant. Well worth it!
If I could put a "perfect" for service. Everyone is wonderful. The food was great. My wife & I visited about 1 hour before closing, but had no issue getting us in.
Friendly people and great shrimp/sausage grits! Soul heaven all the way!
Donya, employee of 15 years, took great care of us Texans! We enjoyed the delicious dark roux gumbo, shrimp and grits, pork chops, red beans and rice, mac n cheese and hoppin johns. The muffins were fantastic too! VERY reasonable price for the massive amount of food we received. Nice, clean atmosphere, great music, great people! Highly recommended!
very good place to eat. great food and will continue to go there. I thought I couldn't find a better place but did when I went there.
Fantastic. My wife and I go every time we're in Detroit.
Sunday Brunch: What can I say first time visitor and it was excellent. I got to see a mixture of people. Not that anything was wrong with that. I saw Asian-Americans and the soulful band was a white couple in there 50's (Jammin'). It was great I can't wait to visit again!!! Thanks for a wonderful meal.
Service was great and the food was amazing! Can't wait to go back
it was so wonderful our sever was great the food was in a class of it's own..it was so good that i savor every bite every flavor of the entree the corn bread is excellent!!!
You absolutely HAVE to try the Sunday brunch. A wonderfully delicious experience!
Cute small restaurant with seperate bar. Great service food was good besides collard greens being a little warm. But great service overall
I frequent this restaurant quite a bit. The food is really good but if you are a cornbread lover, beware!! Very dry, so dry it appears to be old,,, unless it is old. Beans and Cornbread, please change your cornbread recipe or make sure the cornbread is cooked frequently!!
Awesome place, great price and hands down some of the best soul food around, with a atmosphere to die for. Please go check them out.....
Returned from N.C. to start my 'new life ' and it began here with the best food and staff as they were sensational helping set the atmosphere with my now loving Wife.
It's okay, did not like the "carry out" waiting, in dining area of where their customers are eating, **,food is okay, have had better
I haven't been to this restaurant in awhile. The restaurant is small. The staff was friendly and I didn't have to make reservations. I'm still searching for the perfect place to get mac and cheese this was not it. I also ordered greens and rib tips which were very good but I would have liked a variety of sauces for my rib tips instead if one choice. The sweet potatoe muffins were good but I'm definitely not a fan of the cornbread.
I was excited to visit Beans & Cornbread, sadly I was a little let down. I went with my neighbor who is from the south and she was not impressed either. The server was friendly but slow.
I got Shrimp and grits that were just okay (I have had better in the area) the sausage in the grits was really greasy so I didn't eat that, I also had greens which were cooked nicely but too salty and the Mac & Cheese was good home made mac & cheese. My friend had meat loaf with mashed potatoes and fried okra. the Meat loaf was okay but the underside was a little burnt, the potatoes where real and not instant, and the okra was okay. She said we need to down south with her to have some good southern food.
good but crowded
My husband and I went to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary( which was Tuesday) for the first time and the food was awesome ,our server Joy was very helpful, great atmosphere we have a new spot we'll be back!!!
Good food, didnt eat in this tume but enjoyed it last time.
The fried chicken, cornbread, green beans, mac and cheese, and sweet potatoes were great!
One of the best soul food places in metro Detroit. The atmosphere is great, the staff is great and great prices. A must try.
Great food! Recently expanded venue has improved overall appearance.
Oooooooh Shizznyee that yard bird on deck cornbread muffins popping
I ordered food online Saturday, April 9th, 2016 at approximately 8:30pm. I waited in line at the carry out store at the time the e-mail specified my order would be ready just to be told to go to the restaurant bar and pick my food up. When I got to the bar no one greeted me and the bartender took her sweet time going to the back to see if my food was ready as if she was irritated to be bothered with me. There were other upset patrons waiting on food as well. They never started preparing my meal until I arrived which is very unacceptable when they make you pay with a credit card online ahead of time. Not to mention I tipped 15%. When the food was finally ready it wasn't right, but the bartender didn't car she threw the paper bag on the bar like we were a couple of dogs out back waiting to be fed. No apology or anything. The green bean juice had soaked the bottom of the paper bag and our food fell right through in the parking lot. Very upset that no one seemed to care since they got paid in advance. I recommend that everyone avoid ordering online at all costs. You will be very upset. I will NEVER patronize here again. No one who works here seems to know what is going on or care!
Went there today to celebrate what would have been my dad's 97th birthday. The food was great, just like down home. Our server was so nice, she even put a candle in our dessert in honor of my dad. Can't wait to go back!!
We really enjoyed the food! Husband had the fried chicken and said it was excellent. Didn't get a chance for a taste as he inhaled it! I had the rib tips. Very yummy!!
Also the sweet potato muffins are fabulous!
All the food seems to be straight out of the frozen section at GFS, not a very good selection of beer and decor, music and atmosphereseems like it is from the 90s (the worst parts of the 90s.)
I ordered online on 4/17/2016. I selected two separate dinners with three sides. One of my dinners was the fried chicken where I selected the "White Meat only" option. I was charged an additional $2.00. I also selected cornbread dressing. When I arrived, my order was ready. Shame on me that I didn't check it when the bartender gave it to me. Upon my arrival home, I had one chicken breast that was surprisingly small, a chicken leg and thigh (not white meat) that was a bit larger than a ping pong ball. The cornbread dressing was coated with dark colored gravy and burned to a crisp. The portion I did taste was absolutely horrible. The only portion of the meal I enjoyed was the candied yams. My daughter left her meatloaf and macaroni and cheese sitting on the plate. I love a good soul food restaurant but "Beans and Cornbread" does NOT meet the criteria for the amount of money I wasted. I spent over $30.00 for meals that were horrible tasting and prepared. Please check your order before you walk out the doors. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a similar situation. I'm sure the majority of the positive reviews are by persons who are employed there!
My parents took my fiancé and I here for my birthday last week. All of us were very excited to have some good soul food. We made reservations at 8pm and arrived at 7:45. The greeter asked us to go to the bar, where we proceeded to wait over an hour and a half until we were seated. When finally seated, the waitress came to our table and stared at us until we started ordering, which was incredibly uncomfortable. We received our food and it was absolutely disgusting. The salmon was so dry you had to dip it in water. The greens were pure salt, and the chicken was mediocre, which is pretty hard to mess up. The waiter never checked on us, nor did she ask if we wanted anything to drink besides the water already sitting on the table. The atmosphere was inviting, if you were of a certain skin color. I hate to be that person, but they absolutely cater to the black community. It didn't much seem to matter that we were in their restaurant. Regardless of that, the food was just simply bad. To top the night off, the bill was $85, without tip. We will not be returning, and encourage you to not waste your money.
I was passing through Detroit and was told that it was a "Must Visit." I am so glad that I did; the food was absolutely awesome and Miss Ayanna was so helpful, polite, and professional. Without asking, she gave me a sample of the fab gumbo. Will be back on travels from DC to Detroit.
Been coming here since I was a boy and the food has remained awesome. Mac and Cheese is great. Had my engagement party in the Red Velvet room and the bar gets turnt. Definitely a place to go to.
This place is great! We went for dinner this past weekend to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday. We ordered chicken, meatloaf, and a bunch of difference sides. Everything was delicious. The service was top notch, and they even sent her home with a piece of peach cobbler - a thoughtful gesture. We couldn't have asked for a better dining experience.
Food for the soul. Comforting, delicious, tasty, and in a great atmosphere. The restaurant is cozy, not too large, but not too small either. They have buffet style for Sunday brunch and also have specialty items you can order ( i.e pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs). They had a couple singing and playing some soft jazzy music 🎶 which made the day even more special. I'm unsure if they always have live music on Sunday. Pricing is on point. In short- this is a great place for Sunday comfort food. You will absolutely love it!
A triumph of mediocrity! Maybe I expected too muchsince it was voted best soul food in Detroit. The gumbo was ok, but salty. The ribs were lean and fall off the bone, but not much flavor, and "market price" for ribs? Really? Fried okra was also mediocre, or should I say medi-okra. I was excited to try "Hoppin' John' for the first time, since the mixture of black eyed peas, rice, onion and bacon sounded good. I'm still excited to try it for the first time, since what I got was soggy black eyed peas and rice. The black eyed peas tasted like they were canned. I had to ask for my ice tea a second time, never offered a refill and the server never checked back to see how the food was. I'm glad the company I work for took me there, it saved me from taking my wife there. Two more things. Don't expect to be able to order
I finally made to beans and corn bread after hearing how good it was. Me and a couple of friends drove from Saginaw just to eat there. The wait for the table wasn't that bad, we had to wait for our food for awhile so I'll say it was and hour tops but that was okay. I must say the food is very delicious and I enjoyed everything except the potato salad. The only bad thing was our waitress started off real great introduced her self and was real upbeat. But after we received our food it went down hill, she never returned to our table we didn't get refills until we were done eating from another waitress after my friend flagged her down. Some one else even took our payment.
our waitress had a table of maybe 10 so she pretty much threw our table of 3 to the curb. We were going to leave her a tip but we decided she would get a nice tip from the table of 10.
Food is amazing, just dont go after 9pm on a Saturday.. 1hour wait before seated, 10mins before waiter took our order, 15mins before we got our drinks, 35mins before we got our appetizers of which was only bread because the waitress forgot to put in our appetizers order.. 20mins after that we finally received our AMAZING meal.. YOU DO THE MATH!!
Service and wait time was HORRIBLE that night, but the food kinda took away for the frustration.
The food is awesome. The "sides" portions are kind of small. But it's so good. Our waitress was very sweet. The staff is friendly, patient and have great attitudes. They also have a bar and a carry out service.
This place is definitely popular for a reason - the food is phenomenal! At the same time, it's time for this place to expand. It's very small restaurant, so I felt crowded from the time I entered. Even while I was sitting, it seemed like I was in the way of a server trying to get by. The service was okay. The servers & host were friendly, but were so busy, we had to keep running down a new server to refill our drinks, or bring us something. We never did figure out who our actual server was.
This review is for the Side Bar. The bar is a bit tight but intimate. The staff is actually quite friendly and attentive. Went here for after work cocktails and was pleased it wasn't too crowded and music was at a level I could have a conversation with the person next to me. They had a special on whole chicken wings which are the same they serve in the restaurant. They were delicious and hot. A definite bar food staple. The drawback tho is the drink menu. A few decent martinis, but most could be updated. Most of the drinks are a bit "bubblegum". I'll pass on a Grape Kool-Aid martini. Keep your drink order simple and this is a good place for decent drinks and great food.
Went to B&C for the first time in many years. It honestly had just fallen off my radar. I remembered how great was years ago and also had a hankerin' (yes, hankerin') for some southern soul food so we headed over to B&C on a windy Saturday night. The food was as good as I remembered! The fried chicken was excellent and sides were very, very good. The GUMBO though kicked ass! It was so good. I could seriously have that as my main meal and not just an appetizer. Desserts looked great but we were too stuffed to contemplate any. We will be back soon.
Stopped in for the first time last night just to try the peach cobbler. I was not impressed. I have had much better. There was a weird taste possibly from the container. Not a fan! Hopefully the other items tastes better.
I LOVED brunch here on a Sunday. Very good food and live music. I got there early at 11:00am so it wasn't too crowded yet, but it's a popular place so it was crowded when I left. Servers were nice and friendly. I would go back again and again!
The food was great. They accommodated our extra large group. We started with 25, but 38 showed. Service was with a smile, very professional, we saw all hands on deck including manager.
Came ALL the way from the eastside after walking out of Southern Fires and Urban Soul. My husband and I just wanted to get a good meal to complete our dynamic Saviours' Day. I have to acknowledge ARYS she was the (non dairy) cream of the crop serving our veggie plates. Her service, attentiveness and personality was the BEST we have had in a long time. Keep up the good work young sister as its not easy finding great service.
Food not as described. Ordered collared greens, got collard greens mixed with dead animal. Ordered corn, got corn mixed with onions and peppers? Both went immediately into the garbage. I expect to receive what I order. I expect that what is on the menu accurately represents what I will actually get.
LOVED their BBQ sauce! I went here last weekend to meet up with a friend from college. This place was PACKED (which is no surprise because it's amazing) but we sat at the bar and got a few drinks while we waited, which worked out nicely. My friend had the barbecue rib tips and I had the vegetarian Sloppy Joe. The barbecue sauce had a great flavor and we both really loved it. Plus the atmosphere was really cool with old pictures of jazz musicians and artwork. If you're in or near Metro Detroit, eating here is definitely a must. Amazing soul food. Going back soon to try everything on the menu!
Though there was a wait to get in, it was definitely worth every minute to get our food! The food was amazing and our server Shardaya was awesome! Definitely recommend her! She does her job well and Beans and Cornbread is lucky to have a waitress like her! Great food and awesome service! Will definitely return!
I will never ever eat here again... They are very overpriced... Chicken was raw... Portion size very very small, corn bread cold, Mac and cheese awful... Go across the street where the food is better, prices lower, and service better... I stopped eating there 5 years ago do to the same thing.. thought I would give them a try again... Never ever again. It will be a cold day in hell before they get any of my business. Don't waste your money or time!
Went on a busy night and the service was decent. They switched our servers due to the busyness of the restaurant. Our original server did not smile amd seemed agitated when she initially came to our table. The food was good. A few of our sides came out cold. The entrees were on point though. Im from the south (Florida) and I am used to having good experiences with collard greens. The greens here were not that good. Taste like they just boiled the greens and served them. Not sure what greens some of the other reviewers had but i would like to try them. Overall, good food for the price and i will definitely be going back while hoping for a better service experience.
First, we had a great server, Alicia. Fried catfish was delicious, potato salad and cole slaw just like granny use to make. Gumbo took me back to Louisiana, loved it! Great food, nice atmosphere and a great server.
Attended a birthday party in the Velvet room. Food was great, however only given 3 stars for service. My sister didn't get her drink until we were done eating. You would think with us having a party reserved that large, a server would have been dedicated to us. Apparently she was still serving in the main restaurant because it took her forever to come back and forth. She also did not return my change after we were done...
It was my first time here. A very peaceful and clean restaurant. Our host was wonderful. The food was delicious. Everything taste so fresh.
My food was delicious. Took about 45 minutes to get. Small, but nice family restaurant. Food was hot and fresh. Staff were courteous.
Humph... I've not sat in the restaurant in years coz it's always too long of a wait to be seated.
I did walk a few doors down to their *carry out* location; you're able to sit there and eat a quick bite with just a few tables to choose from.
Customer service wasn't as good, the young guy stared unimpressed/not so blessed by our presence at the register. He took our orders and spoke monotone and as if he was angered by us.
Our young waitress brought the sunshine and lifted the vibration -- yaaaay!
I won't rush back, even though my food was tasty.
I was happy I was able to eat at the other Restaurant next door because the other one was 45 minute wait . My beans were cold and a fly in the vinegar..
This place has great food. One of the best in Michigan. Try their candied yams, sweet potato muffins and greens! Seriously amazing!
Never had a problem with dine in, but one star off for the excruciatingly slow carryout service.
THE PLACE WAS SO CLEAN AND NEAT.AND THE WAITERS WAS VERY NICE WE DIDN'T. HAVE TO ASK FOR ANYTHING. OH BUT THE FOOD WAS AMAZING. EVERYTHING. TASTED. REALLY. GOOD!!!
The wait was long, but I thought it would be worth it. The only thing I wanted to do was get an entire refund. My food was very very salty, the corn bread was ice cold, just overall not good. Will never be back.
I love the atmosphere and food. I'd just rather the songstress be seated in the bar area instead of the restaurant. The music is just a little too loud for the area.
SMALL THINGS BRINGS BIG SURPRISES
I was taken back initially when I entered Beans & Cornbread because there was no check-in hostess podium when you walk in. The dining room is small and intimate so you get a feel of the type of 'soul food' cooking you are about to experience. PLEASE DON'T GET DISCOURAGED WITH ANY WAIT TIME. The friendly staff quickly settles you in and the prices are very reasonable.
The managers Jaquitta Terrell and La Tanya Graddy are on top of their game. These two (2) young ladies are a gem to this establishment. However, there is no pecan pie or banana pudding on the menu! This would have raised it to a 5 ⭐️ in my opinion. The bartender is also a gem. I had an excellent visit my first time at Beans & Cornbread and I look forward to visiting it again someday.
Very great place if you want some good soul food and a good time good atmosphere great wonderful service this is the place to be. Good catfish good greens good chicken wings good pork chops love me some beans and cornbread!
Courteous staff... Prompt service... Excellent food.. good prices. We will return.
The food and service are fantastic! Some of us were in Southfield, Michigan for a conference. We asked about where we could go to get really good soul food - everyone we asked named a number of places - but everyone also mentioned Beans and Cornbread as some "really good eatin". The foods presentation was really good with the edible flowers. Everything we had - including dessert was wonderful. I would highly recommend Beans and cornbread.
Our server Shek was amazing. The food was not. The wings were too big and not fried all the way. Dressing wasnt very warm. Mac and cheese was OK. Its pretty small so the seating is kind of close. Bar area is small as well.
The food here always is amazing and satisfying. Service is great, and prices are fair. Cozy atmosphere and nice music. I enjoy my visit every single time. Patrick, the owner, adds a personable touch by strolling through to greet you and ask if your meal meets or exceeds expectations. If you have been seeking a nice, comfortable, sit-down soul food spot, This Is It!
Very nice staff here. Cornbread has good flavor, but is dry. Collard greens are ok but lack salt and don't have the ribs removed 5 out of 10. Fried chicken coating was good but the white meat was overcooked so I give them 6/10. I really like the mac and cheese. Good cheese flavor and crispy edges so that gets 8/10. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant and had no flavor and no salt. The potatoes get a 0/10. Maybe some of the more authentic southern food here is good. Might give it another shot.
Wasn't impressed. Tables were empty when we arrived and we waited about 15 to 20 minutes to be seated. After being seated, our server was great who took our orders correctly. Drinks were ordered and they were not good. Too watered down with ice.
The food itself was very good it was hot season and ready to be served which our server served it up. We enjoyed that and then afterwards we ordered dessert. I ordered a peach cobbler and the other was chocolate cake. I was served cold peach cobbler which had nutmeg poured on top of it and the taste was horrible then the server brought back a slice of cake that had too much cocoa in it with whipped cream on the side. The Coco was overwhelming and too powerful in the cake, so rather than throw it away we packed it up and left.
Some areas need up to date improvements.
Great southern home cooking. The catfish coated in corn meal and the sweat potatoes muffins are hard to beat. Don't miss the Mac and cheese and collard greens. Large portions left no room for apple cobbler. Servers were great but the kitchen was a little slow.
Tasted some peach cobbler I just bought for Thanksgiving. Oh my my I'm in the mood to eat all day long but got to save for the day. Bought two sweet potato pies will not sample or eat until Thanksgiving. If they taste like they look The Closer I get to them the more they make me see Sweeter and Sweeter my love will grow.
Have early evening specials that makes this more affordable for seniors. My service was over the top and food was wonderful. Waitress made me feel cared about. Not always easy being single now my husband died, She treated me very warm.
I have been here once before, and the food and service was fantastic. However, I am here on super bowl sunday, the dining room is nearly empty, and the service, food, and drinks have been ridiculously slow to come. I am very unhappy, and though they comped our drinks, we were highly unhappy with our experience, I am sad to say. I worked at a 5 star restaurant, for 6 years, and I would be embarrassed, to have the service be the only reason we received SUCH a low rating. Food was delicious, (Though a salad was completely forgotten, and one of our dinners was also missed). Our waitress DID comp one of our drinks from the bar (the two martinis were both made wrong), and the dinner that went missing. I was disappointed.
So they email out coupons for buy one get one free shoe box lunch on 3/14/18, good for the $11 fried perch lunch on Friday only for lent. The fine print says dine in only. What's the purpose of the shoe box lunch if its dine in only? Why would I want to eat out of a box the size of a shoe box in the dining room? Why can't I have it as carryout? Poor promotion.
I ordered carryout from here and the service could have been better. When I ordered, I was told it would be ready in about 20-25 minutes. I arrived and waited about 20 minutes over the given time frame until I received my order. I was barely acknowledged when I walked in. After a while, I was asked multiple times by different people what my order was. My opinion of the food is that it wasn't bad. I wasn't overly satisfied, but it was okay.
Mostly the food was and is DELICIOUS!!! Paid extra for the sweet potato muffins that are usually lit, but they tasted different...like sweet cake. Didn't taste sweet potato. But pork chop, fish and collards were delich! Some of the best soul food in the area!
Food is pretty good, but rarely worth the wait. I got takeout this time, I got home and my order was wrong. The food was good though.
Beans & Cornbread is an amazing place to eat if you're north of Detroit. They have so many dishes that are to die for. Their sweet cornbread muffins aren't free anymore but they are worth the up-charge. Their greens come with vinegar and hot sauce(as they should) and their catfish is incredible. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for some authenic soul food. Guaranteed to warm your soul!
Excellent food. Friendly service. Cozy and comfortable. Did I say excellent food?!! I never order from the dessert list at restaurant but i couldn't resist here. The peach cobber was orgasmic.
Heard so much buzz about this place. I left disappointed. The entree I ordered was not even listed on the menu, meatloaf. It was greasy and my sides were lukewarm. Cozy atmosphere. The service was really slow. The server was complaining about her feet and making excuses. The hostess wore an Afghan which was too much for the small dining space and it made me cover my drink and food whenever she walked by as to not get dust from it. I was really disappointed with my experience. Poor management is the first thing to come to mind. They can be so much better. I hope they can make some needed improvements. Until then, I'll make other dining options.
In town on business and stopped by to have dinner at the bar. Service was OK but my black eye peas came out cold, other than that rest of the food was hot. I had the wings, rib tips, and shrimp with greens and black eye peas. Greens were nicely seasoned as were the black eye peas. Cornbread was also good. Solid dining experience.
Ate the grits and shrimp. They added andouille sausage so they did not have as much shrimp. Great taste minus the grits were a little chunky.
The collard greens were awesome as well as the fried okra.
Really nice dining experience overall!
Food is decent, service is slow. Took a long time to get food, refills and especially the check! Mac and cheese and greens were seasoned pretty good. Catfish was salty. A person in our party ordered the bayou combo, you get a pork chop, only get two shrimp and one croquette and it was supposed to have red peppers and mushrooms. It didn't! Asked the server she said, "if they're not on there we probably ran out." At 5 o'clock in the evening on a Friday? Dinner is just getting started. Took a while to get that food wasn't going to send it back. And it would've been nice to be told that up front when ordering, those types of garnish are why your prices are what they are and what makes someone order it. Then, upon leaving I asked for change for a $20 and was told NO ONE IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT HAD CHANGE, EVEN THE BARTENDER! You're not getting a whole 20 with that kind of ridiculously slow service! What kind of establishment is this? No change?! I hadn't been here in years because it was too small and the food wasn't that decent... Now I have other reasons not to return...
We dined in the red velvet room. Prior it was set up like a lounge, this night it had 5 banquet size tables and 10 chairs to each. It has several flat screens and one video screen. They offered a self serve banquet setup from freshly cooked food from the main dining room. This room is very narrow and its difficult to move about, however we were in celebration mode so no one seemed to care. The food was very good, hot, and plentiful. I wasn't privy to how much they ordered vs how many came, but the remaining food was boxed (boxes provided by them)by us for all to take home. The staff checked on us often, refilled lemonades and other beverages readily as well as the food stations. We were a noisy group, but there must be some soundproofing because it didn't seem to disturb diners on the other side of the door.
My husband and I was raised in Mississippi but been here in Michigan for over 25years. My husband and I was celebrating our 23 anniversary and was told of this place. We are from Flint township and I must say, I am a patience and classy person but it was worth the wait of 1 and half hour on a Sunday which is expected. Our server Alicia made us feel very welcome and got us what we needed. Thanks. I had the Salmon Quaquette w/3sides and my husband had the 3 meat dish with 3 sides (of which Alicia convinced my hubby to get the yams I wanted too) and in the end Alicia top it off with Sweet Potato Pie. Thanks again. This place took me back to memories of my mom's Southern Home Cooking
This was my first time going and when I come back to Detroit to visit I will be back. The service was amazing, the opened the door for us to greet us as well as held the door as we left. The food was so good especially the salmon croquette and the dressing. Great place for some good soul food!!
Please go across the street to Sweet Magnolia's...they have traditional soul food. This diamond in the burbs has lost its shine. The menu is stale and stagnant which leaves you frustrated as a true patron. When its winter you have to almost eat your food with your wrap on because the door is less than 3ft from the tables...this is Michigan! To top it off the prices are lower across the street, in a up to date atmosphere and setting. There was no wait when we arrived and we sat right down, Sweet Magnolias had a1/2 hour wait....so we came here.
My friend and I stopped in because of a lunch special they had. Got there 10 after 3. The minuscule dining room was packed so we had to be put on a list. The host informed us we had two or three parties ahead of us and that it should be 20 minutes. She directed us to the bar to wait. Well get to the bar that is located to the right in the vestibule as opposed to left where the dining room is. The bar area is packed also with people lined up against the wall waiting to be sat and at the bar. We sat in that bar for about....40-50 minutes. When we got sat the lunch special was over! Our server was very friendly so she got permission to honor the special but for some reason they brought out our appetizer and 1/2 our entree at the same time. The other half came 20 mins later. I ordered peach cobbler but I guess they were out. We ordered greens but they were out. Encouraged by our server to order the string beans but they taste straight from the can. The catfish was hot and crispy.
This location has been there since 1997 the dining room needs to be enlarged and with that enlargement a remodel. I cant count how many times my chair got bumped when I finally was able to be sat. 21 years in business gotta do better!
Food is very delicious. I think that the place is too small, but good atmosphere and great service I'm clapping for the workers I had an 1 1/2 wait some people even long. Such a good variety for home cooking and spirits. I see why it's worth the wait. Yum! Must visit!
I didn't actually eat there I did go there to eat and celebrate my mother's birthday but it was very crowded and the wait was going to be a little too long for my mother so we end up leaving but as I was waiting there was this man that came out of some room and he was just very friendly and helpful and very professional he asked me how I was doing have I been helped did I need anything to drink. I don't know who he was or what was his name or maybe he was the manager but he was very friendly and helpful and based on that that's why I gave them a five star but I will be going back to eat to see how the service is. The only thing I can see that they need to do at this point is to expand the restaurant part..
Food is above average! I have eaten here at least 3 times and food was good. I ordered tonight from the side bar to take to-go and my order was not correct when I got home. It also took about 30 minutes to prepare and finally the waitress realized it had just been sitting there for 10-15 minutes. Also, keep in mind if you order sweet tea it's not actually brewed sweet tea. Avoid the red beans and rice unless you want dried beans and no rice.
My very first experience here at Beans & Cornbread...I must say I was not disappointed! It took me a minute to sort through exactly what I wanted in the menu because everything sounds so good as your reading. I had to narrow down my options to what I'd never had since I was at a new place. I risked it all on what to my knowledge is a Beans & Cornbread original. A burrito filled with soul food favorites including greens! It was amazing with a side of Mac and cheese. Which was very creamy and good. I highly recommend stopping through if you haven't ever been. Just keep in mind it is usually packed due to popularity but your food will be hot and ready.
I have not been to Beans & Cornbread in awhile, and most likely will not be back. I had just arrived back to town after laying a family member to rest. My mom and I were way too tired to prepare our own food, so... I decided, "let's stop at Beans & Cornbread." We arrived on a Friday night (August 24, 2018) at or around 8:30pm. I was advised that the wait for a table would be around 45 minutes or so. I asked if it was OK to sit at a table the bar side for quicker service. The answer was "yes," that would be OK. We literally sat at the table for at least 15 minutes with no service period. I then went to the bar to ask what the method was for getting service at the tables. I went on to ask "can I order at the bar or will someone come to the table?" I was advised that someone would be over to the table shortly. I requested menus, then returned to my table. Another 10 to 15 minutes went by, and bartender after bartender walked to and from the bar, and still provided no assistance. I proceeded to locate a Manager who advised that he'd come take my order (after explaining to him what was going on). When I returned to the table, there was a server already there take my order. We placed our order, which only consisted of sides (nothing had to be prepared). We literally waited for over 40 minutes to receive our sides, only to be given a "to-go" bag with our food in it. Mind you, it had been clear the entire time that we were dining in. Not sure where the mix up came from. I advised the server that we were dining in, he apologized for the confusion and proceeded to take the "to-go" bag back to the kitchen to plate the food. By the time he came back with our sides, we had been there so long that I absolutely lost track of time. I complained to the manager, as well as another gentleman who worked at the restaurant. I'm not sure what was going on that night, but the service had never been as bad. I remember back in the day they had much better service. I am guessing there have been many changes with management, staff, etc. since my last visit. Once all was said and done, we were provided peach cobbler for the long wait that we had. The only problem with this is that neither of us eat peach cobbler. 😏 I guess it was a nice gesture anyhow.
What an enjoyable experience!!! The atmosphere was both friendly and professional. The soul food was absolutely delicious (even without hot sauce). The wonderful Waitstaff were so attentive and efficient, especially Ms.Donya. Just a Classy Lady. This soul food restaurant is certainly worth checking out for your dining pleasure. You will not be disappointed!!!
It took more than an hour to get a table so we sat at the bar and had drinks. The bartenders were very nice and pleasant. The disaster came when we were seated. Our waitress was sweet with a big smile but she put our order in wrong. So after waiting over an hour to get a table, over an hour to get our food with finding out that they ran out of sweet potatoes and almost an hour to figure out who order what this was an extremely difficult evening which turn into night. We were so hungry but we couldn't enjoy our food. The manager did his best to make things better for us by getting us what we ordered and giving us a discount but this is a memory that I will never forget. I was nice with the two stars!
A group of us from the office went here for lunch. Everyone was happy w they're meals and the staff was friendly. I had the blackened catfish with coleslaw as a side. The catfish was perfect, and the coleslaw was a good blend of vinegar and mayo without the vinegar being overwhelming. We will definitely be back to try other food.
So awesome! Food and service was fantastic. I got the Everything but the kitchen sink. It was so much food and you get 2 sides. My only regret was not getting peach cobbler dessert!
Definitely exceeding my expectations! This is a very NICE restaurant! Their food was so amazing! Their gumbo was killer awesome! I actually loved it so much I got an order to go for the next day! If you’re considering to go here, you HAVE to!
Oh my, I forgot how good the food is. I went off my diet for a day, but I don't care. I had the Bayou Combo with catfish, fried chicken and shrimp. It was crowded but the line went fast. Service was good. Definitely will go to again.
The food here was excellent. However, the bar area was very chaotic and unorganized. When I got a Grey Goose on the rocks I was given a very small cup and charged full price which makes no sense at all. I was also given clean silverware on a dirty plate and had to ask for newer silver ware. That was disgusting to say the least. This place has a lot of potential in areas of food but the bar side needs to be ran more efficient and organized.
This was my first time dining there. Everything was great! The service, the ambiance, and of course the food! I don't usually like restaurant green beans but these were wonderful!
Music is great, food is awesome, bar service was horrific. Waited 20 min for someone to acknowledge us, then the manager took our drink order, went and got a carryout, and served 3 other customers before bringing us our drinks. When we were seated, the server was on point and greeted us right away.
This was my first time going to Beans and Cornbread. I have to admit I was little shy in going because of soul foods places in the past don't live up to their food. I must admit i was very very please with food and the server. The down side is the place is to small for the crowd of people who was coming in there. I say the best time to go is lunch time near 1or 2 o clock in the afternoon there not much of crowd then. i will be coming back .
Was part of an event held in the Red Velvet room. Had perch, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, and fried chicken. The food was delicious, and the service was great
Went to celebrate my church member 80th birthday. The food was great service was good. I had the 3 meat platter it was so good and fresh. I had enough food to take home.
First time here tonight. Went because a few family members recommended it. And I must say, I was NOT disappointed. I ordered Everything But The Kitchen Sink. Gumbo, collard greens, friend okra, rice, lobster tail, grilled shrimp and two sides. It comes with fried shrimp and fried catfish but because I have a fish allergy, they nixed the catfish and grilled the shrimp. I had black eyed peas and sweet potato fries as my sides and of course you get cornbread. When I say it was good, IT WAS GOOD! Great food and service. We went at 515pm before the rush and it was perfect timing. No wait. I'll definitely be back soon!
Great place, but always busy, so bring your patience. Service was excellent and the food is even better. Corn bread is fantastic! Tried the sloppy Joes with Sweet potato fries and was highly impressed.
Drove 30 minutes to try this restaurant and would do it again.
Support Beans and Cornbread the GM TONYA is amazing she knows and understand the business of restaurants and people. If you go ask for Billy the best server I have seen in a very long time.
Small restaurant off NW Hwy and 696. On Sunday is a soul food buffet with live music. Nice servers, dine-in and carry out available, big menu and quiet atmosphere. Food was alright from the buffet, but would've been better if they kept the trays hot. I recommend it.
Gourmet New Orleans style soul food. Not every day food for me but Very Different food and bonus martini bar.. I went for my birthday and had a good time.
The Gumbo was unbelievably delicious. The best I've ever eaten. Minus one soft drinks, which all had a funny taste except for the lemonade.
Food was delicious and came out fast and hot. The service was pretty good as well. I really enjoyed my salmon croquettes and fried okra. The only negative was that our appetizer came out slightly after our entrees.
Today 3/14/19 I met a business colleague for lunch. We had a slight issue. The Manager, Heiress went above and beyond to ensure that we were more than satisfied when we left. The food was awesome as always, but the Manager's commitment to Customer Service was very evident.
Food was amazing! Service was slow. A very cool atmosphere. Black owned business. Great soul food. Sweet potatoes muffins were the best! Gumbo tasted like Louisiana.
Nice place. Always crowded. Bar area is really small but it works. Tables are a little close but it's expected in such a small place. Wait staff is friendly. Food is pretty good. For me personally I'm not a fan of the really big steroid chicken wings. They're rarely cooked thoroughly. But other than that, the rest of the menu gets a thumbs up.
Food and service were great...I was the only one at the bar mostly, which is apparently not the norm for them. Carryout service looked quick. Food wise, the catfish, wings and rib tip combo was phenomenal. The sides were pretty good, although I've had much better mac and cheese and collards. Great happy hour prices... i'll definitely go back
I love Beans and Cornbread but they are charging for sweet potato muffins after all these years, or give 2 per customer and then charge for more if you like.
That should be part of your meal the prices have increased and that fine,
Cornbread and sweet potatoes are so cheap......
If you go to Merry Weathers you still get as many roll in cup no extra charge.
Lovely little spot. Great atmosphere, and style. Went for lunch, don't pass on the sweet potato muffins. They're wonderful, and the wings were great. Service was speedy and attentive. Definitely coming back the next time I'm in the area.
My food was decent. There wasn't a crowd but there was definitely a wait.Realized after we left that gratuity is added for a party of 5. I found this interesting since 3 people in my party of 5 were all under age 6, including an 8 month old who didn't have a meal.
I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Our waitress, Donya, was so nice and helpful. The food was amazing. The collard greens are so good I can still taste them! Reasonable prices and plenty of food.
Sunday Brunch was nasty I'm sorry, everything there and too expensive for what they have at the buffet, 16.95 per person for some fruit(pretty good), fish(funny tasting seasoning),chicken(funny tasting seasoning),green beans(throw up worthy), mac and cheese(yuck!!!),and a dessert(super yuck_!_!_!_!!!) from the buffet, people were nice but the food I wish I had 4 hands so I could give it 4 thumbs down
What a nice southern meal! The sweet potato muffins appetizer are delightful. I've only dined here on Sunday. I've come for the Sunday brunch as well as and...read this and 406 more
