I have visited this restaurant several times in the past and the food has not changed much.

The corn bread is far from the best and is always a little hard. The ribs are just OK in my opinion but I love the fried chicken. The side dishes I choose are always the same (mac n cheese with collard greens) but they are excellent.

At times the wait for seating can get a little ridiculous but the prices are reasonable for what you get.

I'm a southern kidd and to come visit a (city) that can "burn" like Southerners was amazing! On a scale from 1-10 I would rate the food and hospitality a 12.5 lol

Several years ago I had a very bad experience at Amy Ruth's. I swore I'd never eat there again. This time I had a large group of people with me and I decided to swallow my pride and recommend Amy Ruth's because they wanted soul food (and to me, Sylvia's is overrated). I called and was told they don't take reservations for under 17 people. There were 14 of us. I called again and was told to call back closer to the time we were coming. I called 2 hours in advance and was told that they couldn't guarantee us seating at the time we planned to come but we could try. We got there and we were told 30 minute wait. I reluctantly said ok because we had an event to get to 90 minutes later. 10 minutes later the hostess had seating for all of us seated together. I must admit, the service was outstanding and the food was OFF THE CHAIN!!! Some of the best soul food I've had, no doubt. My guests were happy people. The portions were large. The food was well seasoned. You could get a carry out box (or you HAD to get a carryout box). Well done Amy Ruth's! I have changed my mind after my first bad experience. "Never say never"....

Whenever you're in the mood for Souuuul Foood... Best believe your mouth will water when that waiter brings you your plate. Good food, urban feel. Definitely a place you won't forget. Takes you back to when your Grandmother use to cook Sunday Dinner. Enough said go and experience the taste your tongue won't forget.

They bought the space next door to add more seating, and the quality of the food has gone down since. Maybe it's because they're serving more than twice as many customers now. Maybe it's because the huge number of French patrons don't know the difference. Bottom line: It's now a decent place that once served the best brunch in the city. Stick to the Southern offerings, avoid the brunch.

Amy Ruth's is a neighborhood favorite for sure. It's fancy and it's not pretentious. But, it is a good way to get a great soul food meal that tastes home-cooked (authentic). It can a bit of a wait, but I'd say it's worth it.

I usually order breakfast, because breakfast is awesome. I get the chicken and waffles. Sometimes with a side of Mac n Cheese (don't judge me).

I like that all the dishes are named after prominent figures in the black community. They even have a mural on the walls in some of the rooms.

Overall, I like this restaurant a lot.

I love this place. Every time I go there the food gets better and better and better. The staff is wonderful the food is great excuse me the best. The only problem the place is small so you have to wait in line for a table your best bet is to order out that's it. This place deserves five stars from me. Happy food hunting.

This place is so good I have cravings if I have not been able to stop by. The Collard Greens are awesome... The corn bread is great and the Mac and Cheese is just crazy good.

The aways in a hurry but friendly staff lend to the casual dining experience. I take everyone I meet to Amy Ruth's its's just delicious.

I liked EVERYTHING!! The Waffles were the best I ever tasted...the chicken was moist and perfectly seasoned!!. The atmosphere is low key.....portions were awesome!! Food came out quick and staff was welcoming...they are open late and we didn't need a reservation....

E V E R Y T H I N G was Phenomenal!

Half & Half tasted like I was sipping it in a mason jar in a garage in down home South Carolina.

The Chicken & Waffles tasted like Big Mama herself cooked them in a cast iron skillet on a wood stove.

The Mac & Cheese - Good Lawddddd

And the Sweet Potato Pie just ain't fair how sweet and tasty it is.

Don't understand why this place is such a big deal. There's the novelty of chicken on waffles, but the interior is boring, the food is boring. But four stars for the best carrot cake in town!

Amy Ruth's is addicting !!! I heard about this place though word of mouth and ordered once and ended up going back the very next day to eat and experience it again. The service needs a lot of help though , when i called to make an order the woman over the phone didn't know what i was talking about when i read her exactly what i wanted off their own menu i instead had to be very very basic with her. I would recommend it to other and their food portions are seriously on point !

Ill service. Waiting wasn't by arrival time, after we were seated it took like an hour till we got our plates. Completely neglecting customers. Even thought this was because we were asians, other tables were friendly welcomed and got their plates very soon. Some who arrived later than us got their food before us and left the restaurant earlier than us. Unless you have plenty of time to waste, just....don't.

Bad service, bad hostess. The service took away from the whole experience. I even witnessed at table of 3 walk out after getting water and corn bread, none of the employees noticed until several minutes after. Desperately needs customer service training and better management, i won't return.

I was there on Friday August 28, 2015. The outside needs to be redone. We walked up and thought it was closed because of a closed wall over the front of the building. Then, we went in and had to ask to be seated. Waited several minutes before we even got noticed, let alone get some water on the 90 degree day. Waitresses really need a class in customer service, not timely at all. Food was okay. Mac and cheese was overdone, needed some seasoning. The honey dipped chicken was good. Overall, ok but please work on your customer service. Several customers mentioned that while we were there.

We recently visited NYC from ATL & were told to try this restaurant & LOVED IT! the service was amazing, the music & vibe was chill, & OMG the FOOD was BOMB! I am from the south & it was southern cuisine at it's finest!...& not to mention I washed it all down with a cherry koolaid! lol I hadn't had that in years! Definitley a MUST when you go to Harlem!

Well I was anticipating going to Amy Ruth's because of all the nice things I heard about the establishment. On October 25th 2015 I finally went and had the worse experience ever... The food was great but one of the Staff members at the take out counter was very nasty and unprofessional. I greeted her and she didn't respond. I proceeded to put my order in and she was so nasty and rude to me. But of course she was all smiles to the handsome guy on my arm. She printed the receipt and gave it to him, Excuse me chic I'M ORDERING NOT HIM. so AFTER ABOUT 15-20 Minutes he goes in to get the food. the food was $37 he gives her $40 she takes the $3 and puts it in her tip jar so he says you just gone rob me in my face this chic had the audacity to say " I HAVE A VAGINA I CAN DO THAT" B$%#@ WHAT????? I wanted to go in there so bad!! very unprofessional and inappropriate and over the top disrespectful because had i been there she would've never said that...I sent a letter to the manager so hopefully they'll be some changes in the near future

Awesome place, great soul food, good music beautiful artwork on the wall and good staff... I would definitely give this place a 5 star but it could be a little cleaner and also I'd like to visit it a few more times befor I give it a perfect 5 stars :)

My only issue with Amy Ruth's is that there accommodation for a vegetarian/vegan diet is confined to a few side orders, which are still delicious. Then again, visiting a renowned chicken and waffle staple in Harlem may not be in the best interest of a vegetarian to begin with. Still, the food here is great! The staff is friendly and accommodating and you'll find a mix of both locals and visitors on any given night.

12/9/2015

Best chicken and waffles I've had anywhere. Ended up here late at night and don't at all regret it.

The staff were great, brining me cornbread before I even had a chance to order dinner.

I got myself the Al Sharpton, which came highly recommended. It was great.

I've recommended Amy Ruth's multiple times since to locals and travelers alike, and I'll personally be back.

Max P

Restaurant.

Portions are massive. We had the Reggie Harris and the Rev AL Sharpton for dinner, in addition to two side each. The chicken was great! Crispy and tender on the inside with just the right amount of honey. The sides were just OK. The buttered corn was decent (I mean you can't really mess that up) but I didn't quite like the mac and cheese - it was somewhat cold and perhaps not reheated properly.

Tips:

*Check out their hours on the weekends

I'm from Houston, Texas and I know southern cooking and this is southern cooking. I got the smothered pork chops and my wife got the chicken and waffles. It was all delicious and filling. But the cornbread was amazing, was is light, sweet, and rich.

For simple ingredients the food is jacked up then what I'm use too. In Houston, oxtails with three sides $11.50. $5 bucks for lemonade really come on! $3 bucks for kool-aid, that's a joke.

Food 9/10. Service 8/10. Price 2/10.

I split the waffles and fried chicken (Rev. Al Sharpton) and a serving of banana pudding with my sister one evening. The line can get pretty big during peak hours, so I'd recommend not coming for a weekend brunch or anything along those lines.

She tried to tell me that the fried chicken here was better than Willie Mae's, which cooks some of the best fried chicken in the world.

It don't think it is, but the fact that it spurred memories of eating at Willie Mae's speaks for itself.

The banana pudding was pretty standard, and came with whipped cream and vanilla wafers, as usual.

I was in NYC the other day 1/11. And I heard so many people speak highly of Amy Ruth's. So before I left the city I drove to Harlem expressly to get some of their much talked about food. The customer service was not that inviting. I don't know if it's because I had a to go order or not. But I needed to get back on the road asap.Once I got my order I was excited to taste the food. For starters my cornbread was cold, the fried chicken was tough and taste like it had been sitting out for a while. The mac and cheese was ok and the collard greens were decent. Overall, I've had better soul food elsewhere. I wasn't really impressed and felt my money was wasted, I ended up throwing the majority of it away.

The best soulfood spot in NYC hands down, the fried chicken is bomb and the collard greens made me want to slap my momma...... LOL seriously the food is great!

We had a great time at Amy Ruth's. We tried the fried chicken waffles and they were very good. The side of Mac and Cheese was also delicious. The place was packed so we had to wait quite a bit to get a table, but overall a very positive experience!

Every year my office caters the catfish from Amy Ruth's for our Christmas party so there is no question that the food is superb but I have to agree with some of the the other reviewers regarding customer service.

Last night the wait time given was 1 hour and 10 mins. There was an "waiting list" where you could either stand outside in the cold or in a seated waiting area. Parties that joined the line after us were told by another patron to put their name on the list. One couple walked to the door to put their name on the list but were seated ahead of the entire line.

My husband complained and instead of being fair they allowed the couple to remain seated. The line finally started to move until we got to the door. Once "the list holder" left, parties that arrived after us seated in the wait room were ushered into the dining area. I questioned was the "waiting list" still being honored and was told yes but never saw the list again. Was this in retaliation for complaining about the first line jumpers?????

Take note of how the other popular NYC restaurants handle long waiting lines. The Jamaican restaurant The Door in Jamaica Queens uses an electronic number system. IHOP writes names on a legal pad and crosses off the name as the party is seated. If an old receipt pad is being used at least jot down the time the party arrived and honor it for the duration of the crowded line.

The food was SO GOOD!!!! We were heading to Harlem and a lady on the subway recommended Amy Ruth's and even showed us the way to get there. We were so glad we ran into her. The chicken and waffles were the best we ever had. The staff was friendly and efficient. These Canadians love Amy Ruth's!!!

Chichen and waffle, again please. Very very nice.

Just after we sat sown they gave us corn bread, why does corn bread taste this good?

Yes theres a queue outside, yes some grouo can wait a little but it is worth it. We had the chicken waffle and friend catfish. Very very good....

Also talking about the queue, it was only 2 of us, we did not wait at all to be seated....

Visited this afternoon for Mother's Day with boyfriend & son. The line was ridiculously long, waited an hour outside. Our server was standoffish and did not check up on us at all throughout our meal. Once our food arrived, about 15 minutes in he came to rush us off offering containers to take home. He grabbed our cornbread without asking if we were done! The fish was hot & crispy but a bit tough in some spots. The cornbread was cold, would've been better hot. The greens were ok but definitely not fresh. The Mac was our favorite. I almost forgot to mention that once we were seated & ordered drinks...our server brought my peach juice but never brought my boyfriends lemonade. We had to literally flag him down & 30minutes in he finally brought it to the table. No apology or anything๐Ÿ˜. The potato salad was good. My boyfriend liked the ribs. We had the audacity to order dessert, peach cobbler. The crust/dough was SO bland. No taste whatsoever. By the time we reached home in NJ our stomachs hurt so bad we were RUNNING to the bathroom. There were leftovers but I of course had to throw it all out. Overall, I came to celebrate my day & support a Black establishment. I had heard good things about the place so decided to try. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend it. Customer service is major & they need to step their game up in that department.

Really enjoy the place, but in my mind there is stiff competition (even as close as a few blocks away). To start, obviously, the food is good. How good depends a lot on individual taste and preference. This is old school soul food so maybe that would be the best comparison (as opposed to neo-soul, or contemporary American/updated versions). The atmosphere and decor are nice, welcoming and spacious. As has been mentioned, the service staff are friendly but actual service can sometimes be slow. The staples are well thought out and delicious (though calorie-wise probably enough for a week); some specials, rotating items, and less-ordered sides may be more of an after thought. A pleasant surprise is dessert - make the extra effort to leave enough room for a spoon or two. The wait for a table can be long, but I think that's a good sign - the place is well known and loved, which I think adds to the experience.

Visited there yesterday with my wife and daughters, I got BBQ beef ribs and what a disaster. This ribs was boiled and placed on a plate, with some sauce spattered on it. Basically the ribs was white and tough. They enjoyed the Mac and cheese. Long lines which was to be expected, but very disorganized. Not going back and definitely for Fathers Day.

I went for Sunday brunch with some friends and had a wonderful time. It had been a while since my last visit and I must say the food is just as good as it was last time. I got the wings and waffles and was not disappointed at all. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and the waffles were well made. Keep in mind that the juices there are very sweet, some might say too sweet but I like to mix it with my water until I get the sweetness that I like. Aside from the food the service was excellent and the food came out quickly. On a Sunday morning at 11AM I think we waited about 10 minutes which is not bad at all. I will definitely come back here.

Just the best breakfast I had for year! Staff is very kind, good recommendations and the place is warm and the experience delightful. Not from the U.S., I never had the chance to try Afro-American cuisine before and I don't know much about their culture. That was surely a great experience, and now I just want to discover more about that culture; I think it's the purpose of any restaurant and they do it very well. BTW, I had the chicken waffle and my wife the corned beef

Pretty strange to find in the menu position that named President Obama (chicken made any ways) among waffles and pork ribs BBQ. The Obama Chicken is $15 and 1 dollar substitution for white meat. Like chicken legs switch to the breast.

Low cost Soul Comfort food place is quite expensive, very high on sugar (corn bread, souses, waffles) and poor waiter service.

The place is very good for breakfast during the weekdays and crowded at Sunday brunch.

Big hype about this restaurant and long queues at all times of the day for this Harlem haunt. Food didn't disappoint - we ordered beef short back ribs which were lazed with gravy and Mac + cheese and corn on the sides. It was like a heart attack on a plate with grease , oil and red meat overflowing the plate. We also ordered pan cakes and fried chicken -Another "healthy " classic. Fried chicken was less greasy but a dry taste and not in the high rankings of best fried chicken. The portion are huge and two is enough for three people. Probably wouldn't come again as queues , ride to Harlem and prices are on high side for what is essentially junk food. Still check it out if you haven't already.

Yummmmmmmmmy! Looking for a place since we had just left the Harlem Repertoire Theatre at 10pm. We didn't want to drive into the city and take 1/2 the time to 1st find parking, so we googled "soul food"...1st one on the list. We were sooooo Happy.... 8min drive from the theater , we were seated immediately, our food was served in less than 15min. Chicken & waffles, collard greens & cornbread. Can't go wrong. The music was old school, the staff was great... Polite & engaging. Fri&Sat open from 8am-6am next day! Credit cards accepted. Our meal was reasonably priced. Fantastic choice for our extra hour on daylight savings time๐Ÿ˜‰

The food was good but the service was very poor. We got seated quickly but had to wait 15 minutes to get water and then another 15 minutes to place and order. No one came to refill water once and other tables around us were getting constant service.

The short: AMAZING cheesecake

After a morning at Cooper Hewitt, I headed over here to see what kind of selections they have. I did not want a cupcake and came across the New York Cheesecake, sitting there taunting me. I had no idea that I wanted it and ended up realizing there was a subconscious craving for something very New York.

I took the slice with me to Central Park and ate it there. I opened the box and wondered why there was a cup there, and I realized so it was so that the cake stands upright without toppling over.

As soon as my fork slid down the height of the cake, I brought the piece to my mouth and happily ate it, moving it from side-to-side while relishing the well-formed crust that crumbles easily in my mouth, along with the softness of the cake. I had a blissful time eating every single bite and would actually recommend sharing this with somebody as it's a really big piece.

Will I go back just to get the cheesecake? Why yes, yes I would. And you should too.

From the minute you walk in you feel like you're at your grandma's house! The food confirmed that feeling. I ordered the jerked shrimp w/ macaroni and red beans w/ rice; to this day I haven't found a shrimp dish that matches the amazing flavors in this one. Food was a tad bit salty, just a heads up.

I just left this spot. Seating was quick and we loved that. The food was horrible. I chose to have rice and peas, collard greens with the beef ribs and baked chicken. When served, the collard greens was 'corned', meaning toooooo salty to eat, the beef ribs filled my mouth with fat and I had to keep spitting the fat out. I was not served baked chicken as per my order but fried which was tasteless. My husband on the other hand chose the beef ribs and smothered chicken with candied yams and mac and cheese. He said that the mac and cheese was good, but the yam tasted like a bowl of sugar and he could not eat it. He also complained of how fatty the beef ribs were. This was my FIRST time and may be my last.

Tourists beware, try some place else Horrible customer service!!!!!!!! Understandably I'm not a local so this restaurant is not relying on me for income. Prior to last night's experience this was a go to place when I brought friends and relatives in for something different. I won't be ever going again. First it was pouring rain and cold. Let me mention I have Multiple Sclerosis and have difficulty in standing. After the 30 minutes of standing in the rain, it was announced the kitchen was overwhelmed and our waits have been extended. We could see plenty of empty tables. We had already asked if we could be seated to at least have some wine and beer. At this point I begged for a seat, instead of letting us go into the warmth and sit, I was given a chair to continue sitting in the rain. An hour later when we were seated, upstairs which was almost an impossibility for me, at least 10 tables were available. We could have been sitting there drinking and adding to our bill. The server was minimally attentive. The food came quickly from the food runner. All the food was phenomenal except for the corn bread and coconut cake. We were never offered refills on our drinks. We had to request the dessert which tasted like it was stale. The corn bread had an aftertaste as if the shortening they used was rancid. If taking the food to go was an option we might have taken it, but they closed the to go ordering. Basically I want my $200 back!!!!

3/3/2017

You can go to Sylvia's for the civilized feel, but the food is nearly as good for less than half the price at Amy Ruth's. Their standout cornbread tastes the same today as when I first tasted it in 1998.

4/4/2017

First, the waiter took over 10 minutes to come see us. It wasn't terribly crowded. The cornbread came out and it was warmed to perfection, but lacked flavor. I ordered the President Obama (fried chicken, dark meat), mac and cheese and yams. The chicken could had been seasoned better. The mac and cheese and delicious, and the portion size was unexpectedly big. I really enjoyed the taste of the yams, but it was an odd consistency. Too mushy for my liking, but it tasted really good!

Note: go to an ATM before you get there if you have a debit card without the chip. Their machine doesn't accept it and then you'll have to find an ATM.

Best mac & cheese. Period. Puts all others to shame, and I'm a Texan, so trust me, I know the real deal. The smothered chicken was perfect. The iced sweet tea great. The only negative thing I can say is that I wish they offered refills on the iced tea. At a steep $4 a tea price, they should offer at least 1 refill, especially considering the food is so fantastic you need to wash it down frequently. The vibe is legit. One of the few times I say the food is worth the hype. Bravo.

Rob M

4/4/2017

There was a good selections of options and though the line was long it pretty much kept moving. The cost is somewhat high but the portion sizes match or exceed the cost that is for sure. The service is immaculate, with getting your food to the wait staff checking on you to see if anything is needed to helping you carry your food to your table or car! There is not a lot of seasoning in the food but it's still good and edible. Just add some salt and pepper to taste!

4/4/2017

Mac and cheese was great, so was the Candied yams. I ordered that with fried chicken. The food was fresh but I had a major problem with my chicken. Me and my girlfriends fried chicken had a lot of blood in it. I tried to eat around it but I kept finding pools of blood. Other than that everything was great but never going back due to bloody chicken.

The place has more seating than it appears to, at first glance, and even on a weeknight, it was fairly full. But that lends itself to a fun, busy kind of vibe. When we went here, two neighbouring tables were celebrating birthdays and the servers came by singing and clapping and holding a slice of cake.

We ordered pork chops and waffles and honey-dipped fried chicken, which fed three of us quite well. We had never had the combination of meat and waffles and were slightly skeptical but it turned out to be great! We especially enjoyed the crunchy crispness of the chicken that went so well with the honey. We ended our meal with an enormous peach cobbler that we could barely make a dent in. Only wish it came with a bit of ice cream, and I noticed that it was non-uniformly warm, probably because it has been microwaved :(

Great chilled spot with beautiful murals of the best African Americans in history and entertainment gracing their walls. Off the charts great! Been here multiple times and always fantastic. the Chicken n Waffles - I have no idea how they make that so perfect. Actually, I didn't know what perfect was till I had their fried chicken for the first time a few years ago.

If you have to wait to get in or for service, it's part of the charm and the staff could not be more accommodating about letting you know they're a tad busy, or, if anything else is not up to your expectations, they practically trip over themselves to get it right.

Don't miss crossing off such a great experience off your bucket list!

The service was amazing. All t he servers tended to me. Hower, the food was honestly mediocre to me. No shade but, I'm from Miami and I'm used to that southern soul food that would make your mother cry. This food was good but I've definitely definitely had better. I ordered the cat fish and a side of fried chicken. They gave me a wing that was fried perfectly just as the cat fish was, and despite the lack of flavor, I was able to tolerate the food. However, the leg quarter was really dark and totally over fried so, I sent it back immediately with a smile and a positive attitude as not to upset anyone. They gave me another like 3 seconds later that was just as burnt and over cooked as the first one. I really didn't appreciate that but, I chose not to complain. My 2 sides, the collared greens and mac and cheese along with the cat fish were really mediocre to me. What can I say, the south has soul food on lock. But it was a nice place to visit. And I don't care what the food taste like, I'm always down to support any black owned business.

This hands down my favorite place to get soul food in the city. Whenever, I'm back in NY I try to stop here. There can be a wait depending on the day/time but it's never unbearable. The food is great, full of flavor. Somebody grandma in that kitchen working!

I've already visited this restaurant twice, and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves chicken and/or waffles. The waffles and syrup are nice and buttery, the sweet tea is amazing, and the scenery of the restaurant is nicely detailed. I loved the Pecan & Banana Waffle on my first visit, and loved the Reverend Al Sharpton (classic chicken and waffle) even more. I am hoping to visit this restaurant again soon, because it always has delicious foods.

Came here with the family and the food was amazing. None of us could finish our food because there was just so much but we were more than happy to take it home and savor that taste for later. The staff is great, very respectable and positive. I even messed up on my own order but the waitress and chef were more than happy to bring me what I orginally wanted. Prices are actually not bad one bit for the amount of food you get. My chicken was so juicy and tender and so were my dads chops. I can go on and on about the food but I wont. Its just much worth it if you're in the mood for some great home cooked food. Also a great place for a family outing and would even make a fun date setting especially if your spouse doesnt come from a southern background.

Alexis W

10/10/2017

I loved the food, it's definitely top notch soul food. The service is also the fastest I've ever experienced so they know what they're doing. The prices are also reasonable for the amount of food. However the rapid gentrification of the spot gives it the 4-star rating. Within a few months it will stop being a local spot altogether. I arrived immediately after work and was seated quickly and surrounded by local Harlem residents, by the time I left there was a line out the door and down the block with groups of kids looking nervous to be in the area.

10/10/2017

Wow this place is overrated.

I got to Amy Ruths on a calm Friday night. After being seated right in the front my waitress came over and asked me what I wanted. I ordered the smothered chicken which is the President Obama on the menu. I also ordered a side of collards and red beans and rice.

It's no secret that this place is a NYC legend. This was part of of the allure of me going. All while dining, people continually came flooding in and out of the restaurant to order food to go, and patrons kept filling the seats surrounding me.

So when my smothered chicken came out and it was mostly just chicken bones covered in gravy ( I spent more time picking bones from my teeth and chewing tough pieces of chicken than I did actually eating hearty pieces of meat), when the red beans and rice tasted like literally nothing but crunchy bottom of the barrel rice, and the only saving grace were the collards, I tried not to be offended that I was about to drop almost $30 on inedible and overpriced food. What's most upsetting is the potential my meal had to be amazing. If they had given me a real piece of chicken instead of broken bits, if they had just taken the extra 5 minutes to give me good rice instead of the rice I'll assume was sitting out for a while, I would have had no complaints. But my experience was so marred by the hoards of hungry people I saw walking in and leaving satisfied, I felt robbed of a great dining experience.

I barely ate my food and when the waitress asked me what I thought, my response was "good". To tell them that their world famous food missed the mark completely would've been a losing battle.

I won't go back, plain and simple.

The last time I ate there, I enjoyed my meal but had higher expectations. You will love this place depending on your preferences for certain types of food. My understanding is that they have certain signature dishes that are excellent; and some that are not. It's definitely worth a visit though! And it is a NYC staple for soul food!

When Iโ€™m craving some good soul food I go to Amy Ruthโ€™s. The food is absolutely delicious. The place is clean and the prices are reasonable. My favorite drink to order is the lemonade. I especially like when ordering to go my food is wrapped up so it doesnโ€™t spill. I would have give it 5 stars but it seems the side orders have shrunk they donโ€™t give as much as they use to. But itโ€™s still worth the money.

I love their catfish and waffle. My dad loves their peach cobbler. You are going to find something for everyone to eat. It's a little pricey but worth it, the food is delicious. I get my order to go but the food is made when ordered so it's nice and fresh. The wait is never too long unless it's before a holiday. I try to get a slice of sweet potato pie but they are always out. :-( Update: Finally got a pie, it was delicious! You don't get it by the slice, you pay for a small pie. They also give generous portions of banana pudding and the peach cobbler.

Sooo, I am visiting from Houston and decided to try out one of Harlem's local favorites to satisfy my hunger as I've been running around all day! It started off good as a gentleman opened the door for me and greeted me as I walked in... all down hill from there. So I walk up to a stand that says Please wait to be Seated where I see two young men chattin it up with no cares in the world. I didn't think anything of it because they had on regular street clothes and I figured they couldn't have worked there. I waited a few minutes while more people come in and go to the take out line. At this point some people look my way but no one offers to ask if I need anything. Then some more people walk in and stand behind me where they are immediately greeted by one of the guys that I initially thought didn't work there. At this point I step in and say "excuse me I was I was waiting to be seated for dine in". The guy then proceeded to tell me "oh you weren't standing in the right line"... which completely wasn't true. The thing is, even if this were true that is not the appropriate response to give a paying customer. The appropriate response would have been for him to apologize and seat me immediately instead of trying to justify his behavior. Moving along...I then took a seat after he told me to seat myself wherever I'd like and I have to say that as I looked at the menu and thought a minute I decided I'm not going to spend $30+ for one meal in an establishment that gives horrible customer service, so I decided to take my business across the street where I was greeted by friendly faces and got everything I wanted for half the price! What a huge disappointment... I was ready for my chicken and waffle too! Amy Ruth, please train your staff on customer service.

After moving to Harlem a little while ago, and growing up about 10 miles away, I always wanted to have chicken and waffles here in Harlem. I had them a few years ago in Atlanta, and it was amazing. Waffle stacked with chicken, gravy, biscuit, fried egg -it was amazing and I will remember it forever. This, was not that. This was very simply a fried leg/thigh sitting on top of a waffle. Nothing else. You can put butter on it, or maple syrup. I do commend them for having actual maple syrup though. Well done! The waffle itself was also a tasty waffle. Chicken was okay.

Bottom line, for about $16, getting nothing but a piece of friend chicken and a waffle is unimpressive. Quality of the two items was still decent/okay, so it gets 3 stars, but I probably won't be back.

4/19/2018

I requested my order to go and with good reason. The line for seating was out of the door. I ordered the smoked turkey wings, Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes and collards. This was worth the wait as the food was delicious. I did not eat in, as mentioned, but the staff was friendly and professional for the most part. I would definitely return to Any Ruth's to dine in or take out. One suggestion as I waited they could use some refreshing with their decor in terms of the tables and better lighting to highlight their art work.

Tad S

4/19/2018

Good food, not great. I enjoyed my meal but it wasn't unforgettable and rather pricey for soul food IMO.

I thought the collard greens were very good and they were made with smoked turkey. The mac and cheese and the yams were just okay. I can't complain about them, nor can I rave.

The letdown, and perhaps what cast a shadow over this experience, were the fried wings. Although they were cooked properly they lacked seasoning. They weren't bad, per se, just boring.

To end on a positive note, the waffles were delicious. My daughter ordered these and they were very flavorful with just enough texture on the outside and fluff on the inside. It didn't make up for the chicken but was super delicious.

4/19/2018

Great food and huge portions. Tacky decor and the floor is slippery and dirty. You feel bad eating there cause itโ€™s dirty. Seriously consider a designer to rearrange things a bit and get a carpet for the space so your diners can be safe. Line the walls with framed paintings of our heroes. You can do much better by spending a little money into the lighting which is currently harsh and bright. Add mood lights. I had the biggest and best chicken wings though. Ooh. I loved it. And your cook, the african Guy was so sweet and gentle. He chatted with us and all the ladies at the table fell instantly in love with him. Heโ€™s a ๐Ÿ’Ž gem.

It doesn't have the atmosphere of a more crowded Sylvia's or Red Rooster. What it does have is awesome food in a relatively small restaurant with great service that can hold its own with any restaurant serving similar Southern style food. The honey fried chicken is to die for as is their chicken and ribs combo. If you like something sweet, then go for the honey fried chicken. If you like simply good fried chicken to go with your ribs, go for the chicken & ribs combo. Make your pick. You will do well either way in this place with a small and intimate setting where you get good value for your $$. The portions are generous and the leftovers the next day were still pretty good.

Janae A

6/20/2018

Honey dipped fried chicken is amazing, must try! The mac and cheese was really good as well as the cabbage. It definitely tastes like your Grandma's cooking. The wait on Sunday was about 40 minutes and service was friendly but a bit slow. The decor needs an update but besides that it was a great experience!

Finally had chicken and waffles, a combination that had eluded me for years. I must say that NOW I know why people get it. It was soooooo good!!! Was in the area and wanted some soul food and Amy Ruth's delivered. Definitely heading back soon to try other things on the menu. Courteous and friendly staff who check on you. What more can you ask for?

My brother came in from out of town wanting to eat some soul food so we go to AR. 30 minute wait was not bad, place packed wall 2 wall we were seated near a very busy bathroom which i might add was very clean being A Unisex bathroom. I noticed a table sitting directly under a blue bug zapper which I'm glad we did not accept. (SEE PHOTO BELOW) After being seated menus were given to us made out of paper. We waited at lease 13 minutes just to get water OK the place was crowded. After another 10 minute wait I had the smothered pork chops my brother had roasted chicken my niece had the salmon cakes They sure give you large portions for your money. On a one to ten basis My Pork chops were and 8 I would have given it a 10 but there was so much gravy on it I could not tell where the bone started and the meat ended My brother enjoyed his baked chicken and my niece enjoyed her salmon cakes. We also enjoyed some very good Potato salad collard greens And candy yams, My brother and I also enjoyed a piece of chocolate and coconut cake this place is highly overrated and prices are very high but they do give you a lot of food for your money, My brother asked if I would return to this place My response was no the prices are too high , And you have to wait too long to get served OK the place was crowded the food was just OK though. The bill for 3 people was $100 including tips. End of report

Waffles and fried chicken wings scrumptious. Mac n cheese and greens was good . Shrimp and grits not so much. Overall good place. Would return . Attentiveness of server could have been better but overall level of service was decent.

The service was slow at the beginning but after 5 minutes we had a waiter and shortly after we had our drinks. They give cornbread as a appetizer for the table to share, which was good but eat it while it is hot. We ordered the fried shrimp as an appetizer which was delicious. The food only took about 10 minutes after the appetizer to arrive. Everything was very good and tasty. On one of the meals, potato salad was ordered and it was very sweet. The prices are a little high but you get good portions.

Really nice folks and truly amazing food. Can't wait to go back. Definitely check it out when you can. They have lots of great stuff, not just the fried chicken, but that's probably the best fried chicken I've had. Enjoy. Oh yeah, parking is free if you go west to the end of the block.

This was a 1st time visit to Amy Ruth's and I really enjoyed my food. The decor and menu is really cute! I ordered fried catfish, mac and cheese & grits. My Sis in Law ordered greens, fried Whiting, mac and cheese, candied yams and grits. That was honestly the best mac and cheese that I've had out in a while. Absolutely delicious! My catfish was fried perfectly but was on the salty side as far as seasoning goes. The yams were good and the grits were perfect! The staff was friendly and fast. I highly recommend trying Amy Ruth's you're sure to find something on the menu to please your palette! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ Lastly, I ordered the peach cobbler because I was being gluttonous ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ and they serving was huge. However, the ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ weren't as soft as they should've been and it was seasoned with way too much Allspice and nutmeg. Those are 2 spices that I don't like because they overpower a dish if used heavily. So I did send that back, I was sad because I wanted to enjoy that when I got back to my hotel. Anyhow, I still highly recommend them. I'll certainly be going back when I'm in NYC again. ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ˜‰

The famous Amy's Ruth definitely lived up to its reputation. The food was so good. Fast service for a busy restaurant. Portion was huge definitely took some home. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5/5 is the price is more on the pricier side. Would go again next time I'm New York

Was not at all happy with my food. Potato salad too sweet. Too much liquid in the waffles, which caused the batter to be doughy. Was told the whitting fish was fresh but it was frozen, considering the whittling is frozen the price should be much cheaper than what it is. I had the same experience with the food from this restaurant many years ago. Gave it a try because my sister wanted to go here for her birthday. Big mistake. Will never go again. However, the staff did try to get it right. They were very kind and courteous.

Amy Ruth's is a really great restaurant. I visited there to honor a friend who was speaking at a sports conference. We had a short wait considering we were a party of 10 and waitresses and servers were excellent. Orders were taken and dinner was served in a seasonal time. The food absolutely delicious

Great place to stop by.

Food was absolutely delicious. Best chicken and waffles I've ever had. Clean and creative. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The bus boy was the most helpful person. My boyfriend spilled his drink on top of his food by accident and he replaced it with a new dish in minutes! A++ will be returning in a few weeks.

The food and service were great! Everything tasted very tasty and was hot. I was in and out without any delay. I went on a Tuesday night so it wasnโ€™t busy in the restaurant. I would highly recommend.

Visited New York with my daughter and tried AR for the first time. The food was great and the atmosphere was nice. However, we didnโ€™t appreciate being criticized for our southern accent and being called โ€˜countryโ€™. Most people from the north always feel the need to belittle southerners. Itโ€™s really annoying and rude to us. You should have taken southern hospitality to New York with those southern soul food recipes.
