How would you rate AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9?
It's beautiful inside. Best prices, multiplex, spacious theaters, great concessions (although pricey) and good service. It's an all around quality outing!
Horrible! I brought my fifth grade students on a trip and it was horrible. There was one person at the ticket stand the wait was too long to get tickets. Then the line at the concession stand was the worst experience ever. Someone removed the tape that formed the line and basically got in front of me after I had been waiting with my students for 20 minutes. But what was worst was the discrimination. When I complained about what happened, the matter was overlooked by the person I spoke to so I apologized to my students about not getting any snacks and went in to watch the movie. Inside the theater, it got worst. A group of ignorant adults came and literally took seats that belonged to my students. I prefer not going into details and I asked my students not to post what happened but people have to grow up in NYC. Management has to work better with managing lines at concession stands and there should be security for ignorant people that disrespect and attack children for no reason.
Great place to go with family and friends, staff were great, seating was awesome my best experience. We will go again to this movie theatre.
Super ghetto. Heard things getting stolen from recent customers and seen staff talk more then doing their job and walk around more chatting then actually checking theaters every hour for any technical support or cleanness. Besides that the theater itself is nice only thing that ruins it is the people.
Watched X-Men days of future past here. Great movie! Unforgettable experience!
i go to this cinema almost every other weekend and sometimes during the week with my 5 year old son. the only time we have to wait more then 5 minutes is when a movie is released. they are a very professional, organized, friendly and efficient place. i would recommend this theater if you are in Harlem. my only complaints about here is that sometime a few of the games are broken or off (which i'm sure may be hard to keep up with being that some parent don't watch there children while they're climbing all over the place) and once in a while the actual cinema room were the movie is played wreaks of feet.
Despite the geographical convenience I swear I'm never going here again: people talk through the ENTIRE thing, check their phones repeatedly, bring small children to PG-13/R-rated movies, come in late and then noisily leave and return multiple times throughout the film -- and this was all within one
I rather go to times square. the Magic Johnson theater is smelly . it smells like old mildew. like the chairs and carpet haven't been cleaned sinced it opened.
The people who give this theatre 5 stars really must be clueless about what most people think is a good movie experience. Perhaps they enjoy people talking throughout the whole movie or the smells or people bringing noisy children into the movie or using their phones constantly. If you like this, then, yes, 5 stars! To be fair, this does not happen every time. But often enough. Mostly I only go to this theatre on a weekday morning matinee. And then usually it is okay, I'd say, more than half the time. But last time I went, there was a distinct smell of urine in the hall that we could still smell in the seats.
This theater is convenient if you live uptown. I have been here numerous times over the years and haven't had a bad experience. On my last visit there was only one agent at the ticket counter. My wait wasn't too long. The bathrooms were pretty clean. Even though I got to the theater just on time for the movie there were lots of seat options for the movie that I went to see which was great for me. I would definitely return to this theater. I did not run into any issues.
If your looking to go see a movie that has been out for 2 weeks and early in the morning this the perfect theater. If you pick the right movie it will be almost completely empty. It is not as bad as everyone says. Since it is in harlem a lot of school classes go there during the day time and if it is a very popular movie then thats when people act juvenile and rude. Pick your movies right and you will have a good time.
I like this theater. I never smell anything unpleasant. I go early so its always clean at that time.
I've been going to AMC Magic Johnson theater for years!!! I absolutely love it. There are times on the weekend I can just get dressed and go catch a movie without having to go downtown. Its a wonderful neighborhood theater. Each theater showing has a great view from any seat. I highly recommend it.
I travel a lot and I love movies. I have been to many theaters, including others in New York City and even in London, England. No, AMC Magic Johnson does not serve food or drinks while dining like my favorite theater in New Orleans, however, it is a really decent theater. I've viewed movies there at least a half dozen times. The screening rooms are modern. I have never smelled any odor so I am really perplexed about that claim, as I can not stand a dirty theater. I have been to theaters in downtown Manhattan that have been funky and smelly. One even had roaches, which is why I started coming uptown to Magic Johnson theater in the first place. A number of downtown theaters also had to be closed down for bed bugs. Never Magic Johnson theater though. Finally, I have to admit that I was concerned that people would be talking throughout the movie -- common in African American theaters. I had the worst experience with this in a theater in Los Angeles. I had to leave. I was impressed with the Harlem AMC viewing audience though. People were not having it. There were some whispers, but people were pretty much quiet throughout the movie. Peace.
I Love the Magic Johnson Theater. The workers are very polite and there are lots of seats, People are not all over each other. I don't have to go anywhere else, They are always showing what I want to watch, and it is a very awesome family oriented setting from the moment you walk in.
Magic Johnson Movie Theatre has been around in our community over 15 years. My family and I enjoyed those Sunday matinee ' s. Now that my children are older I don't look for fast, convenient or cheap anymore. I look to completely enjoy my movie without those annoying spectators. For those of you on a tight budget but still want that togetherness as a family; Magic is perfect for you.
I found the theatre very quiet and this was during the showing of SELMA. Yes there were a few outbursts at the appropriate times. Staff was very polite and helpful. For those that found the experience unpleasant what did you do about it? Did you WRITE management? The pen is mightier than the sword.I come here from Brooklyn because i want to be where the people are that I know and appreciate. Yes the children are often a little noisy but i'd rather they come to the movie than left home alone. we all know what can and often does happen to children left home alone. R rated movies are the choice of the parents, all the children have to do is to use a computer and they can see any porno on their devices. 'nuff said.
People cell phones ringing loud. Seat uncomfortable, dirty. People wait till the movie comes on to go back and fourth across you, cell phones lights due to people texting. Just plain out rudeness. Makes you feel like you'd have done better waiting for DVD to come out. Baby's crying at movie shows that they shouldn't even be allow to be at.
My first time going to this theater and it was great! So comfy and clean that i fell asleep during the movie. The seats are so comfortable and they recline. Too comfortable , like i said i fell asleep 10 minutes after sitting down. I don't know if it was because the movie was boring but who doesn't like Charlie Brown? or if the seats were just too comfortable i felt like i was at home. I will definitely recommend this theater, i will be returning during the Thanksgiving Holiday to check out another flick. Hopefully , won't fall asleep this time.
Can't beat the ticket prices! I have been going to this theater for years! Great location. Audience is usually quiet and respectful during showings. Oh and did I mention the ticket prices are GREAT!!!
Great place to take the kids for matinees. Cost of snacks very expensive. Popcorn, nachos and 2 drinks cost $26 dollar's. Theater is well maintained and the staff is friendly.
I liked the fact the consumer population is culturally diverse and the customer services providers are hospitable and eager to assist with knowledgeable information. I also enjoyed the huge screens and surround sound audio effects which intensified the movie theatre experience.
I still go to this theater out of convenience however I go much more frequently. The staff are here and there in terms of customer service. The theaters could use some updates in terms of cleanliness but the bathrooms are kept very clean. The film options tend to be good and the cost is lower than theaters downtown which is a bonus.
Original Review (2013):
Mostly I go here on occasion because it is in walking distance from my house, otherwise I would not go here. It is clean, the staff is friendly, and there is a large selection of food. The crowd however can be a bit loud,so if you are looking for a 'quieter' movie experience, try a theater downtown.
The atmosphere is friendly and the place is usually kept clean. Photographs of all the special stars and celebrities of color that adorn the walls adds a certain charm. I haven't seen a photo collection of that magnitude any where else except maybe Harlem Shakes where the bathroom (female) walls are covered with side by side front covers of jet magazine.
I really enjoy the theater and am very glad to see it in Harlem. I wish people "ghetto B" wouldn't comment on what other people do with their children.
I'm sure that's not what the sites for. You didn't even comment on the site or the theater or YOUR experience....so sad.
Stay in YOUR lane and stop swerving. We are blessed to have a great, clean place to go in our HOOD. Not downtown for a change, a long time in the making.
I love that we have a nice theatre in the neighborhood. I grew up in Harlem. Saw them come and saw them go. Thanks for maintaining a great atmosphere for my family!
Let's put this simply:
Pros: cheapest matinee in the city.
Cons: most of the rooms smell. Literally. They have a stench of wet smoke and bodily fluid. Not even exaggerating.
reasonable price, especially during matinee hours for adults and children. speaking of which, what are "ghetto people"? and if you're around such people, what does that make YOU?
the theater always dirty the slushy machine always broke and they have bed bugs i dont know what happen but this theater went down hill they no longer care about the cleanes of the theater the popcorn stale and my feet was sticking to the floor never going bk
I have been going to this theater since its debut. I am always satisfied with the service, cleanliness, and even matinée prices. Great place for adults and children.
I love this theatre and it's in my neighborhood. Everytime I go there I have a good experience. And people like Ms. Thomas and all her kids should've went to an earlier showing like the matinee to avoid all the problems she experienced instead of complaining.
I have always had a good movie-watching experience there, although the wait time for the snack bar is too long, and have learned that pre-buying a movie ticket takes longer than buying a ticket at the box office... Otherwise, I just avoid the snack bar and enjoy their selection of movies. They give discounts to veterans (I'm a veteran), and have great ticket prices before 12noon!
Shariyka Thomas!! Wtf you mean by only in African American community where ever the hell you at you live at is A African American community because we build this f**king country dum a**!!! People like you are the reason why there are so many Hate in the world! Sad f**coming sad
Theater had garbage everywhere. The carpet was sticky all over, felt like I was walking in swamp. The heavy set dark skinned manager was not professional. Bathroom smelled stink. Popcorn cold. My family will not be going back there. So disappointed, we used to love going there.👎🏾
Great matinee price. Service was good. Bathrooms are clean. Otherwise, there is a musty odor where the individual theaters are. The carpets and seats need a thorough cleaning. The location is convenient to get to. I would like to continue to come to here as I like to support businesses within my community. I would like to see improvement in the overall cleanliness of it.
If I could award ZERO stars I would have because the theater doesn't deserve one! I will NEVER visit this theater again! Where shall I begin? 1) The theater smelled like piss! 2) People were in the theater smoking weed. Really? Do that on your own time and in your own space. 3) When we spoke to the manager afterwards, he looked at us as though we were aliens and did not utter a single word. Customer service? Nonexistent!!! 4) Just discovered that there was a breach on my debit card 20 minutes after using it to pay for my movie ticket. DO NOT USE YOUR DEBIT/CREDIT CARD, there is some sort of scam going on. It was a small dollar amount, but that really is not the point. THEFT IS THEFT!
My cousin suggested we visit Harlem and hang out. This was my first time going to this theater. I watched two movies with my son and my cousin. Enjoyed it. It is very clean. Pleasant environment. Employees are nice and friendly. I would go back again.
Inexpensive tickets compared to the other theatres but sitting in the theatre on two occassions with my children in a PG13 movie, we had to acquire smoke coming from someone's cigarette they had decided to light up. The staff is just as nervous to approach this riff raff as i would have been not being an employee. This particular theatre doesn't protect you or your movie going experience. It's watch at your own risk. They could have called security up to escort them out but NOPE. There is a lack of compassion and courtesy with the staff. There should always be a manager/supervisor or someone for customer relations around. I rather spend more money and go elsewhere and have a courteous friendly pleasant clean non broken chairs no smoking tolerated experience.
The movie theater is in the hood but is a little too hood for me sometimes. I had been there and people are smoking mariguana while watching the movie or getting drunk like is bar.Place has a funny smell. There is reason why this movie theater have more security than any other movies theater I have been to. My advice, careful on the movie you choose to watch There.
The Magic Johnson theatre is a great place to catch a movie in Central Harlem. During the day it's pretty quiet and relaxed.
It's close to the house and easy to walk. Theaters are generally clean and patrons have been respectful. The usually have most new releases.
I hate this movie theater. My friend took me here after he got discounted tickets through his employer. When we tried to redeem the tickets, the guy wouldn't accept the voucher and we had to pay full-price. Upstairs, the guy collecting ticket stubs was sooooo slow. Groups were coming in and instead of ripping a bunch at a time, he ripped one by one. The concession stand was another s**t show. And the place is dirty.
Stay away from the AMC on 125 st! Today Dec 26, prime day for movie watching, there were no cashiers to buy tickets from, and none of the vending machine worked...the lines were long with people and children on holiday...shame on you for not maintaining this beloved neighborhood movie theater!
Great mixed movie selection! The staff are so professional and the audience ... if nothing else, the audience defines this theater. They are enthusiastic, vocal, receptive, inclusive, over all amazing. When someone is upset with their movie experience, they make sure everyone is upset. If you want a quiet night out with family or are on a date go to another theater. If you want to hear some hilarious talk back, feel involved with situations that have nothing to do with you, and watch people in their most comfortable setting i.e. food cooked from home, taking off shoes and putting legs on chair in front of them, talking on their cellphone during the trailers and even the movie - this is the place for you.
Awful. All 3 Kiosks were broken, one was draped in a lovely designer trash bag. The line to purchase tickets was insanely long. When we were finally able to purchase tickets the salesperson sold us tickets to the wrong movie, which we didn't realize until we left and returned for our show, only to come back and the movie was sold out. We were told that WE should have checked our tickets. I travelled all the way from BK to hang with a friend in the freezing cold, it was a total waste of time. The theatre wasn't the cleanest place either. Horrible. I only chose one star because it wouldn't let me post this without doing so.
This WAS a nice theater at one time. This place is not clean and, this new seating arrangement sucks. I've been going here for years, and despite how early my wife and I arrived before a show, we had to sit separately, opposite sides of the theater! The ticket agent said we would be seated behind each other. Not a good look for what was supposed to be our date night!
Magic Johnson no longer owns this establishment. This explains why, and how fast this theater went from excellent to substandard in an accelerated pace. Magic Johnson cared enough about the community to maintain a respectable standard for his patrons. My recent visit to this theater convinced me that the new owners care little for the community that this theater is in. I haven't seen someone smoking crack in years, but saw a man smoking crack while my wife and I were going up the escalators. The smell of smoke and urine while in the theater reminded me of the old Times Square movie houses in the 1970's. The movie theater is in Harlem and is very convenient, but I just can't endorse an establishment that in all regards should probably be shut down.
Love this place. Especially in the morning. When the tickets are cheaper. And there isn't that many people so it is easier to take my son and him not get to anxious cause of too many people.
This place was awesome at one time, today this place was nasty, it smelled like dead rats, seats are filthy and bedbug infested.. when informing management I was offer free complementary tickets.. NO THANK YOU.. FOOD PRICES ARE OUTRAGEOUS FOR SELF SERVE SERVICE.. NEVER AGAIN WILL I COME HERE AGAIN.. GOT MY REFUND AND LEFT.. I WAS NOT STAYING IN THOSE BEDBUGS INFESTED SEATS.. DISGUSTING.. RATCHET THEATRE COMPLEMENTS THE HARLEM..!!
This movie theater is incredible.I've been here many times and I always love it. It has the most comfortable seats, great movies and delicious food. I definitely recommend it.
A solid AMC. Stubs benefits are honored here. With the addition of an updated AMC app, everything runs smoothly. The benefits are better than Regal and I find more AMCs here in the city. Love the new soda machines. The use of reserved seats is also a life safer. No need to be at the theater an hour and a half earlier and rushing to seats.
The best feature of this theatre is the location. It's great to be able to catch a movie without leaving uptown. Staff and management are very responsive. The food is fresh. The theatre had a slight grubbiness to it but recently I've noticed that it's getting cleaner.
I have been going to this theatre since it opened and I love being able to go in my neighborhood. Their food and drink prices are in line with what the AMC chains charge and yes they could be a little cleaner, but I am usually satisfied with my experiences. The theatre itself is more than 20 years old and could probably use a facelift, however I like the fact that I can have a great matinee price for a first run movie and be in walking distance to my apartment.
Quick service but I would suggest buying your ticket online so you can skip the queue. Food is the usual choices and the restrooms were clean. Comfortable seats with plenty od leg room.
Long lines for tickets, and the ticket machines are usually out of order so you have to get here early even if you bought tickets online. The theaters could be cleaner, but nothing to really complain about. Screens and sound systems are good, you just have to deal with people talking through the whole movie.
I don't love it you only love someone who can love back I like it. This will be my second time at this theater I went for the first time on Father's days to see the mummy and today would be my second time 7/6/17 to see Spider Man and I do plan to return again God willing it's near me I like that you can order the tickets online or go to one of the vending machine and purchase your ticket and pick your seats. I use to work in a movie theater in the 80's I was an usher where you had to look for open seat for customer with a flashlight and now you have assigned seating which is great to be able to keep the group you came with all together if that what you wish so Thank you AMC for make my return to the theater fantastic
HORRIBLE!! That word sums up my whole experience. Let me start with concession stand. There was only one cashier collecting and fulfilling customer's orders while there were 3 workers behind the counter viewing their phones and having a private conversation. Got to theatre at 7:20pm for a 7:45pm movie and was told theatre is still being cleaned therefore; I cannot go in until 7:30pm. Only one person assigned to clean the theatre. Not allowed to go in until 7:41pm by which that time the room was dark and made it a bit difficult to locate my preselected seat. All the wait time was in vain because once inside the theatre, there was an undeniable disgusting smell. The odor was atrocious! I would have left and considered the money spent a loss however; my counterpart really wanted to see the movie (Transformers, the last knight). After suffering over 2 hours, I went straight home and took a shower. Needless to say, I will NEVER go back.
Ummm. Well living in Florida, the prices up north are crazy. It's an interesting theatre, but ticket prices are just high as heck .But the food pricing is pretty decent. They also have one of those soda machines that offer everything! They do the seating charts as well
Concession staff for food and drinks seemed a bit out of it and the venue was not well cleaned when I was there. The floor has a very distinct odor in the hallways leading up to the actual theaters. Although the building it was located in was nice, it still felt empty. All other staff was friendly though. There are better theaters in the city.
Love it, close to home and lots of pretty Women from the hood. Everyone should try it sometimes. It's a good place to be,very relaxing. So come & open the doors to fun and relaxation. Fun for the whole Family.
Great movie but carpet & theatres need deep cleaning. Theatre 1 was not cleaned after previous show. There were seats with empty cups etc. left by previous patrons.
My 3 cheese pizza was awful~ consisted mostly of tomato paste and one cheese. You pay a lot for less.
Just got through seeing Jigsaw !!! This was my second time their. Went last week to see Geostorm!! It was awesome. Great service. Got my tickets extremely fast, right along with my food. Didn't need to wait long and got a perfect seat. All in all had an awesome night!! Will recommend.
Loved it. The best feature of this theatre is the location. It's great to be able to catch a movie without leaving uptown. Staff and management are very responsive. The food is fresh. The theatre had a slight grubbiness to it but recently I've noticed that it's getting cleaner.
Okay service, courteous but not friendly. Gross chili cheese dog but ate it anyway. Popcorn good, only one icee machine working at the time. Not many people so it was quiet.
This movie theater is absolutely DISGUSTING!!! I couldn’t believe the lack of quality. The bathroom had water all over the sinks, paper on the floor but no toilet tissue in the stalls or towel dispensers. Then the seats are very old and has vivid stains. However, the staff are nice! It’s not their fault it’s such a poor kept organization. Spend your money at an iPic because here is not worth it!
Not the best movie theater but it isn’t the worst. It’s in a nice shopping area so you can do a little shopping after a movie. Some days you get rude workers, some days you get nice ones. It’s a gamble.
I used to hate going to the movies. But now they're really clean. You don’t slide accross the sticky floor. It was the weekend and it was still quiet. Even the bathroom was kept up. I rarely ever eat but the snacks were reasonable and good. I enjoyed myself thru one feature and went downstairs and paid for another. Had an awesome day.
For the most part it is a good theater to go, but the things they lack on is service representatives. Both in the Ticket booth and personal on the food section. too much lines and time consuming. They need better management so they can expedite the demand of people much faster.
This place is horrible. I have come here multiple times and it is always filthy especially the women’s restroom. Tonight was the worst not only because people in the theatre think they’re in their living room at home and talk out loud and have conversations but because someone started smoking pot right in the theatre followed by cigarettes. As we were leaving, I visited the restroom and couldn’t use a single stall because they were covered with urine and feces. Also on our way out, the staff while cleaning found an empty bottle of alcohol and all they said was someone’s lit. I seriously hope that AMC would look into changing management and staff so that stuff like this is monitored more closely. I know the neighborhood isn’t the best but honestly for the prices we are paying that shouldn’t matter. This theatre will be a last resort for me and I surely hope things change because you’re only attracting the riff raff that prevent respectable customers from coming. And don’t think that raising the ticket prices will ever make up for quality service. This is despicable.
Dirty very dirty, ok Mr. Magic I have to sound off. Being a Harlem native I have to say the money I have spent in your establishment compared to the services I am receiving is very upsetting. Dirty and disgusting are my main word's because it is just that and I am not just referring to the upkeep but your staff members as well. Every last one of your employees you be remanded back into orientation for a whole new makeover on how to maintain upkeep in a professional establishment. Everytime I go there it is a utter mess, butter everywhere, juice, soda, icy spills on machines and counters at the concession stand on the floor and carpet with pop corn and candy which I have to clean or move out of my own way so that i and my family or guest can sit down. NO WAY SHOULD BE. we have supported you in your career and your sickness and your business venture and THIS IS THE THANKS WE GET FOR IT??? I feel so used as not only a long to fan but a customer and supporter and things need to change NOW!!! POOR POOR POOR
Very unprofessional staff, Answering a simple question and Getting someone to help me was a Task for the staff. The slushy machines were not working but they still charged us for them. Then when we asked for assistance or someone to check the machines out, we were dismissed with a sucking of the teeth and by turning to the next customer as if we were not even there.
The place also looked like a tornado hit it.
This staff needs to have a serious training session.
For the price of movie going we should have some better customer service.
P.s. Hey Magic!!!!
Upgrade them seats...
Most AMC Theatres already have reclining seats.
I go here to watch just about every movie I'm interested in. The place is always clean and looking great. The employees are polite folks I've never had any real trouble with and there's a buffalo wild wings in the same building? Great place.
I was disappointed this time around. They opened the theater 15 minutes before the show began. There were 2 bus loads of children and additional patrons outside waiting for it to open when we got there. There was only 1 cashier and there were numerous premiere members in a separate line, so us regular customers still had to wait while they were taken care of. We were unable to get popcorn and drink because we didn't want to miss the movie. We had all ready missed the trailers before the movie began. I never had an issue with this theater prior to this visit but then again I never go that early. My son and I enjoyed the movie non the less.
Saw "Black Panther " here. Reserved tickets is awesome, but it still doesn't keep people from sitting in the wrong seat. HA! Good concessions and clean theatre. Very good experience.
Lots of debris on the floor in the lobby as well as inside the theater. It appeared as if it had not been cleaned between films. The beverage and popcorn flavoring stations were pretty sticky. However, you buy a ticket for a specific seat, which is kinda cool.
My experience at the AMC Magic Johnson theater was a disaster. After getting my tickets from the electronic system I proceeded to the snack line which was extremely long with only 2 registers open, but I tried to make the best of it by talking with my friends about the movie and deciding what I would eat. As we waited on the line I was horrified to see a staff coming from a room with a large clear storage bin full of popcorn to dump in the popcorn display and serve to customers. I witnessed this happen 2 times during my wait to be served. This turned my stomach and I immediately knew I would not be ordering the popcorn so I purchased nachos with cheese only to eat it and discover that my cheese was cold. Upon getting my order I walked to the soda machines to get my drink when I saw juice, soda, slushie, and ice all over the machines and floor, it was a disaster. The soda was flat, the nacho cheese was cold, the trash cans were overflowing and the theater was a mess. There was popcorn all over the floor and counters and from my arrival to my exit I saw no one cleaning anything. I have never been so disappointed. This theater is in such a great location near lots of restaurants, transportation and stores; however I would not recommend this theater after my bad experiences.
GROSS! Stay out!!! You’ve been warned. Pay extra for clean seats and go somewhere else. Or bring a large rain poncho that you can drape over the seat. They need to get their act together. No one likes a filthy seat. Scrub and power wash that theater and then I’ll give them my money. Magic Johnson would be ashamed his name is attached to this travesty. Their popcorn gave me diarrhea. It’s unsanitary and poorly kept. 0 stars.
OMG. I give this place a zero. Not for the staffing but the area and the disgusting awful people who come there. Do not go late at night the experience was an encounter of two to four disgusting patrons who obviously lived around the area. Came in narrated the movie loud. On their phone loud. Drinking threw up. Hitting the back of my chair. The security when notified handled it well. Just one of those things living in the ghetto everyone thinks all people act like animals. Some people are the down fall of their community. They should purge all those types of individuals off this planet.
I have been a member of this community since the 90's and to see the change that had happened to the movies is amazing. From the food selection all the way to having the option to select your own seats. They are a lot cleaner and tider than before. HEY DADS!!! They have a baby changing station in the bathroom for us too!!
Well, shockingly some improvements happened. New (working!) ticket machines were installed, on the 2nd floor. You can get tickets upstairs now, too. I came to see a movie here recently: opening weekend and the 3D movie theater was empty on a Friday morning! I never thought that I could see an empty theater in Manhattan. :) I'll be coming here more often. Mostly clean, can't complain. AMC, thank you for caring about Harlem.
Not as fancy as the one in times square but, it is worth it. Especially good for those who want to get tickets for cheap. They sell tickets for cheap for the early morning shows.
However, the seating system at that place is a little bit uncomfortable and no one follows the reserved seating system rule inside. If you reserve a seat, don't expect to find it not filled if you don't get there early.
Moreover, outside food is not allowed except they don't check your bag.
Overall, it is a good place to have fun for cheap once in a while.
I really wish I'd read the reviews for this theatre prior to going. Went there to see a 'A Quiet Place' on a Tuesday night. The theatre itself is fine - it's big and honestly it looked pretty clean when I was there (didn't use the bathrooms tho). There's a little arcade area too in the place where you buy your tickets.
The big issue came once the movie started. People KEPT TALKING. Normally I don't care if people talk during movies, but the movie I was watching was so quiet and meant to be super suspenseful. But some audience members kept commenting and talking to each other during the first 30 min. It was so frustrating. Other people would try to shush them but the talking audience members would either ignore them or get indignant. Really soured the experience for me. If you don't like people talking I'd suggest going on a day/time with less traffic.
It was horrible. The staff was still cleaning the theater 10 minutes before the next showing. The entire theater floor was littered with trash and popcorn. The one aisle my friend and I wanted to sit in was slick and sticky. My friend is disabled. If I hadn't made in aware of the condition of the aisle, her might have fallen and incurred an injury. The restroom was even worse. The floor was sticky or wet in places; the area too wash your hands was unattended; some of the hand soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers were empty. Our community shouldn't have to settle for sub- standard conditions. Especially when you're paying almost $20.00 for a movie ticket. I'm appalled!!!
I really enjoyed watching a movie here. It gets incredibly crowded, but it only adds to the experience as I love watching movies when everyone else reacts. It helps me get into it. Other than that, it's a really nice place and it's comfortable, too!
Nice Multiplex theater. Multiple movie selection. Reserved seating available. Matinee prices available in morning. Variety of food selections. Seating comfortable.
This is our neighborhood theatre, its clean, good customer service, many food choices and reasonable prices. Food I think is a little expensive but still worth it (they give a good amount). Video games were not working last time we went but it worked out for me, 4 kids can run the bill pretty high without games. They also have $5 any movie all day Tuesdays...not sure if you need to be a member. You should visit their site to confirm if the promo is still avail before you visit.
It was great. I love the theatre, love being in Harlem. The only problem was the group of seniors next to me ,that talked through the whole movie. Some reclining seats would be nice. Overall I enjoyed it. Saw Superfly! Great movie!
I took my family here to see the movie "A QUIET PLACE"..... & I was kinda amazed at how when you purchase your tickets you have to reserve your seats that way everyone has a spot!!! Very friendly service!! HAD A VERY GOOD TIME!!!
the place is always kinda dirty. But its HARLEM, sorta expect it. But it could be better. Much better Magic Johnson. If you want to watch the movie in peace go in the morning. Matinee is only $6.- Summer camps are always here so its always loud and crowded, filled with little children. But the popcorn is Good!
It's my local movie theater and its a good one. They could manage it a bit better but overall I appreciate it's existence. I gave it 4 stars because there's definitely room for improvement. Many times the ticket scanner doesn't work which causes confusion. The area with the soda machines and the butter machines are usually wet and sticky. Not a pleasant experience especially in sandals or flip flops. Those items are actually minor so I won't take more stars off.
The theaters are big however every theater smells like mold and the seats smell like sweat. The floors are dirty and slippery. Wouldn't come back
One of the staples of growing up in Harlem; the Magic Johnson Theatre has been my go-to place to catch a movie. It always feels lively and staff is generally friendly.
I recently saw the Blackkklansmen here (great movie) and the commentary from the audience made it even better. I like a silent movie theatre as much as the next guy but here it feels like it's part of the experience.
Otherwise, snack prices are pretty high - but most movie theaters are like this.
Definitely check it out if you're in the area.
The photos of famous African American artists that decorate the wall on the upper level are great. Most movie theaters in Manhattan seem to have a difficult time keeping the beverage machines clean, this theater included. Come extra early, if you want snacks or food with your movie. The line is always hideous, and the wait for hot snacks and food can take up to 15 minutes. Also, they need more employees to keep the teenagers from sneaking into additional movie theaters, trying to get a free movie in or impress their peers. It's very distracting.
One plus was that the customer service attendant gave us new tickets when an employee told us to go to the wrong theater, which caused us to miss the beginning of the movie we were supposed to see. Luckily another theater was showing it in less than an hour.
This is the only movie theater in Harlem and it deserves an upgrade like reclining leather seats like the Broadway AMC. Customers could not find the movie door because the sign indicating which movie was playing inside that section was broken. The nachos were cold and the popcorn looked miserable.
Is there a manager in this theater? Magic Johnson needs to help them step up their game! Seriously.. Matbe pay people a better wage to attract better help.
Not the best theater in town but definitely acceptable. Good screens, decent seats, and rarely sold out shows. This is my local theater so I always come here. Just don’t expect anything special. Come here if you just want to see a movie.
Great neighborhood movie theater. However, why do people insist on bringing babies to late night sessions? Or scary movies? Or any movies for all that matters, when they're only a few months old and crying? Other than that, good option for uptown residents.
Nice neighborhood movie theater that generally have the latest movies I desire to see. They offer great refreshments, but they are kind of pricey. They upgraded one of the theaters in the back, putting in Dolby surround sound, plush seats that allow you to really lean back and prop your feet up. The rest of the theaters need cosmetic renovations. Used to be nice theater but after 15 yrs of wear and stare, its time to upgrade
This is very nice for family. Kids have a place for play also. Daytime not crowded , mini history story's on walls. You're entertained as you continue to look at surroundings .enjoyable theater .
I went to Magic Johnson theater this morning with my family and spent a pretty penny at the concession stand. For the money I paid for two large popcorns I expected freshly popped popcorn as opposed to stale popcorn given to me out of the transparent yellow bags sitting there OVERNIGHT. Everything else was good but that. I felt taken advantage of and we barely ate it.
Really Comfortable theatre! The seats are spacious. The recliner works!!🤗 This was my first visit here and I went because a friend of mine. Told me that they have a $5 no tax Tuesday's. All I had to do was create an account. Which was painless lol. I almost forgot the screen is a perfect size and that sound system is amazing!!! I'm definitely going again and again. Pretty soon people will start calling me 125 😂
I liked this movie theater very very much. I went during the early hours, and it was my first time. I like the location firstly, because it seems like everything is so close. The theaters are big and the staff is friendly. I did like all of the decorations that were in there. Seeing the old movies posted all around made me excited to watch my movie. It was really big and did take me long to get to my theater. Nothing major tho.
I do not recommend this theater to anyone. This theater needs a change of management, renovation, and enough staff members to serve their customers. The cleanness of the theater is disgusting, I mean the seats smell like urine and the floors are all sticky. Coming here was really a last option for me and I regret every moment. The staff members demeanor shows you just how "professional'" the theater presents itself. They literally act as if they have something better to do than their JOBS. I can't say I'll be back here soon or recommend anyone to come.
I really enjoy this theater --- especially the price and the staff. I have never had a bad day there and I go there a lot. It's very convenient to get to by subway and bus and you can shop, sightsee, pay your bills and eat.
This theater does not give you that new movie excitement feel. It’s very small the staff are very rude just talking amongst themselves, make you late for the movie and sometimes are not even at the counter. I took my daughter there she loved the movie but again she would of loved watching the same movie on our smart TV with homemade popcorn. So if I were to influence you to come here I would be wrong. Please save your money don’t waste it at least not in this theater. Also, the theater was not clean, the seats smelled so bad I really could not put my back on the whole seat I felt like something was going to crawl on me I was so relieved when the movie ended.
EXCELLENT THEATRE. VERY LOCAL. CENTRALLY LOCATED IN THE INTERNATIONAL VILLAGE OF HARLEM//USA RIGHT IN THE MIDST OF A VERY BUSY AND BUSTLING SHOPPING DISTRICT. EASILY ACCESSED BY SEVERAL BUS AND SUBWAY LINES.
THE THEATRE HAS SEVERAL ELECTRONIC//VIDEO GAMES TO KEEP THE WHOLE FAMILY BUSY WHILE WAITING FOR YOUR SHOW TO START.
Went last night to see Spider-Man (Animated joint centering Miles Morales) and it was pretty dope although they didn't have my favorite Salted Caramel Popcorn... (Addictive once you began to eat it.) The theater itself is surprisingly peaceful during the evening compared to how people claim how ratchet it can be. I'll give em 5 stars next time they have my Popcorn. Enjoy peeps!
4 stars because they have a lot of rooms and it's well-located. It would have been 3 before they added the fancy Dolby room. They need to get up to speed with the better AMC locations that all have nicer chairs. But it looks like it's on its way to being a pretty nice theater for uptown peeps.
I have to say even though I'm giving this place 3 stars, I still go here often. It's within waking distance and convenient. The movies are great. Unfortunately the place is never clean and the bathrooms are lacking in maintenance. Try to see movies in theater 5. That's the only one with reclining seats and surround sound!
My boyfriend and I went to catch a movie here. The screen failed and we had to wait for over 30 minutes, but still didn't work and they cancelled. Good thing is, we were refunded in full, and given 2 extra tickets to watch a movie of our choice at our convenient time. We couldn't stay angry. Lol. That was awesome.
Hey, Honestly, this theater needs to be renovated. Badly! My seat was broken! I almost fell into the row behind me. Thankfully, this isn't my home location. The staff is good. No issues with them at all. 3 stars because my movie was good. That's it. I had to sit with a seat between my kids and I. Very frustrating.
Nice clean theatre with all the latest movies always available. We went on a Saturday evening and it wasn't really crowded. Food is regular high priced movie food and fresh. Concession lines can be long at times but that is expected. Make sure you join AMC club for some good deals every now and then. If you look around you can find parking up the block sometimes.
The new reclining seats theater is great, but all the money was put into that room and not into fixing the oven or the drink machines. So it's nice to have a great viewing experience, but I would like the full menu to actually be available :)
I had the popcorn, curly fries and water. They fries and popcorn were delicious
I am sorry, this theatre needs a serious upgrade!!!! From the smell of inside the theatre to the seats, to the people managing the lighting and previews and showing of the movie. Lets not forget the stale tasting popcorn. This place needs a huge upgrade. They ruined my whole movie experience. As for something they cant change the customers and how filthy they leave their surroundings maybe this is why the theatre is ran the way it is.
Little was a really good movie. Great for families and adults alike. Bathrooms were relatively clean. The seats are new but do not recline like other AMC theaters. Overall okay theater. I typically go there when supporting black films. Just feels different. Will go back again.
Love this Movie Theater. Always have current Movie Posters. Game machines working. Clean seats, clean bathrooms, clean floors. Staff is friendly and respectful. No complaints in the years ... that I have come to see movies with my family.
They re found much better now. Better clerks. Better and faster services. Food court staff is super efficient too. I just wished that place was cleaner, bathrooms and allays are always gross!!
Magic Johnson theatre is a historical place to watch movies with pictures of legend and icons of all genres backgrounds. As soon as you get to the third floor you will be like wow. Very clean place and staff members are very helpful and polite. I recommend you go here to watch a movie with family or friends you will love it. Etc...
The crew member working the concession stand was super friendly and hilarious. We had a good laugh, it was a great way to start off our movie date. He also signed us up for the AMC membership, told us about the benefits, and also gave us a tip about a trailer that will play after the credits. I wish we caught his name, but he provided one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a movie theatre to date.
This place needs new flooring and chairs; it smells awful. Also, Magic johnson sold it YEARS ago. This is an AMC theater and they need to do better!
UPDATE: 5/29/19 The theater has new flooring and it smells much better. Chair upgrades and better concession service will raise the rating again. Now 3 stars instead of 2.
I love Harlem and choose this venue whenever possible. I always have a good experience
Update: June 2019
Last I was there the concession stands for soda, tops and straws was nasty. And I'm not talking about one day of mess but BUILD UP of spills over time. It only makes me wonder what the back looks like.
Always liked coming here. I live way downtown but will happily support the MJ theater when I am uptown. The staff is great with the exception of the ticket lady. She talks way too much and a line forms quickly. I had to use the ticket dispensing machine to be sure I got to my seat in time. Also, time needs to be taken to clean the theater floors, since they are sticky. Particular attention needs to be given when PG movies are shown since the "little people" can make a mess. Thank you Magic Johnson for investing in Harlem!
This theater has come a long way from what it used to be. However, it still needs a bit of work. There should be more people working the snack counters to avoid creating long lines. There should be a line for people who has already paid for their seats and those who has purchased them at the theater. Also, I've stopped purchasing seats in the standard theaters because people will literally sit anywhere even when their seat is labeled on their ticket. This has happened way too many times and even I've gotten into an altercation with a woman for refusing to get up. Security should be posted in packed theaters to ensure that this isn't happening.
Magic Johnson is one of my favorite people! Nice theater! Great location! Great staff! My friend left her purse in one of the theaters and when we went back to the theatre, they were holding it for us!
This theater is in a great location. Its many windows offer a great view for people watching on the busy 125th street. Food choices are great. Reclinging Seating has been upgraded in some theaters but not all. The lines move quickly some days but most days the food time waiting is long. Overall great theater.
An employee name DENISE Is very unprofessional rude toward customers that need to be address ASAP She does not value her job and act childish and ghetto. You should be careful when you talk about people customers and even her co workers. Your in the eyes of the public she need to know she at work not the playground. It appears to me a grow older woman should know better.
I only really ever go to the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 because it's so convenient to me. When you live in the Bronx and you want to catch a movie at an...read this and 229 more
