Gorgeous rooms with fantastic views, and very friendly service make this my favorite place to stay in San Francisco, and one of my favorite hotels anywhere. Be sure to let them know if you are celebrating a special occasion, as they have been generous when we were. The bar downstairs serves a pricey but very good breakfast, and turns into a bit of a hot spot at night. It is especially nice in summer, because they have a nice patio. Perfect location across from the Ferry Building. Spring the extra couple bucks for the room with the bay window - it adds a small sitting area, a rainfall shower, and a lovely view of the Bay Bridge.

I have been to the Vitale many times with my wife and we always love it. !!

Just spent our 10th Anniversary there in the circular suite. Awesome !!

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this amazing experience.

Nice hotel. Nice location. Staff was average. FYI, there is a non-negotiable $30 "amenities" fee that will be included on your bill when you check out. When I questioned the charge I was told is was for Wi-Fi, coffee/tea in the lobby, newspapers, etc. Really? I travel for a living and such "amenities" are always included...

I had an unpleasant experience at the intersection of Hotel Tonight and the Hotel Vitale.

We booked a room yesterday morning at Hotel Vitale via Hotel Tonight. The price was $30 less than the list price of the cheapest room at the hotel shown on their own website.

Upon checkout today, Hotel Vitale's front desk clerk told me that I would be charged a $30 fee for the use of the hotel's amenities. She said this fee was stated in the Hotel Tonight transaction. It may have been and I simply missed it.

My net experience is that I was a victim of a bait-and-switch. Hotel Tonight offers a discount rate in their list price which the Hotel Vitale then makes back in a supplemental fee not charged through the Hotel Tonight system. Crafty but crooked.

The location and staff are standouts. Rooms have great views in addition to terraces.

A word about Americano - the restaurant on location - the kitchen masterfully prepared Black Cod on several occasions. Successful attempts were later made to replicate a side order, ( brussel sprouts with pancetta), but attempting the cod dish was way beyond my skill set. The entre's were perfectly cooked, the only exception being one small bone found in a later dinner. An inexcusable mistake, perhaps, but in light of overall experiences certainly not means for a poor rating.

Hotel Vitale gets my recommendation for reasons too long to list.

Update: After seeing my review, the hotel seemed more than willing to try and reconcile the gaps in service. They opted to ship my charger back to me free of charge and refund the room service fee. They said they will try to work with the Front Desk manager to better explain the Urban Retreat Fee so that future guests understand the benefits that come with it. I do hope that would be the case for all future patrons who are new guests.

Original Review:

This hotel needs to be knocked down a peg or two. Just b/c you cater to the rich doesn't mean you should be shady. Delight your customers, don't treat them like endless cash machines.

urban retreat fee ($30/night) is a nasty surprise and it's benefits were not clearly outlined (access to the YMCA or Bay Club, free coffee/tea in lobby --benefits I would have gladly liked to know about) at check-in nor did I find it outlined when I settled in my room.

Ordered room service and charges $10 for a service charge plus automatic 20% tip. Then the receipt asks for extra gratuity. So my $16 hamburger & fries cost $31. I can get hamburgers cheaper in Geneva, CHF Furthermore, I asked for tomato but when I called the kitchen as to why they didn't include it the staff said tomatoes aren't in season. Give me a break it's June in CA, you can find fresh tomatoes somewhere.

I will say the burger meat was quite good though.

Rooms were fantastic. They come with a lot of amenities.

Left my charger in the room, luckily the house staff are really nice people and they agreed to ship it back to me but had to take my CC# to charge me for the $4 to ship in back to my place...that barely qualifies for going above and beyond in service.

David J

Rooms smelled a bit of mildew, service not that great, serviceable and decent price for SF if you're in a pinch.

Nick D

Great hotel & Americano has great food.

Yvette T

Can't beat the location! A block from the Embarcadero, which makes the bay view rooms amazing. Perfect view of the Bay Bridge and the Ferry Building. If you're stuck in a city room, you can still enjoy the view from the rooftop terraces with lounge chairs and space heaters--a must in SF!

Excellent service and amenities, including free wifi. They try to accommodate every request, including placing a complimentary mini fridge in our room (for all those Farmer's Market purchases!).

Not a perfect rating because the phone in our room didn't work, making it difficult to contact the front desk. And one of my towels had a spot of blood on it. Also, I could do without the exorbitant parking fees.

Would not think twice about staying here for a future SF visit.

Will G

Room was comfortable and service was professional. Good view of the waterfront from our room. Air conditioning in our room was broken, however.

Roy C

beautiful hotel. Americano is always crowded and quite pricey, but a good hotel bar.

Matt K

This is my favorite hotel in the city. The rooms are spacious and I've never had any issues with service or booking.

Kevin K

Great service, nice room. Relatively quiet, but still dinner city noise.

Bosco Z

Great views, great rooms and americano ia good for drinks

Kristy G

Bartenders here are amazing! Very nice ambiance and great wine menu

Simon D

Friendly staff, good bar, great location, free Wi-Fi. Occasional wait at reception, in room dining a little limited.

Phil P

Great location, very hip hotel which isn't really my thing. Expensive add-on fees for resort and parking

Kristin B

Great rooms that are spacious in a convenient location. Beautiful views in corner rooms.

lynn e

Great location, great service, but we were on the back side of the building, in a corner room and BOTH Windows had a view of a wall, terrible with such a great view of the water on the other side

Ryan L

Not a good experience. The porter got in an argument with our taxi driver before we'd even entered the hotel. 30 mins after we'd checked into our room, a member of staff walked in to show someone the room!

Update: the hotel wrote to us to apologise and reduced our bill by 10%.

Kind Staff, GREAT location. spacious rooms. Loved my stay at the Hotel Vital. $43 cab ride from the airport.

Thorne W

Good food and a great place for drinks after work! I really commend the flat bread pizza

Jahongir H

We booked room but was late for check in and they sold it out. Not good experience but manager was very helpful and accomodated us at different one.

If anyone is looking for a great deal on hotels you can check it out on HotelRaven. com Booked this hotel on there and they had the cheapest rates around...

Happy hour was great. Needed more little standing tables so that we could drink and eat at the same time. Service from the hotel for the company was good too.

Alp B

We stayed here one night in November. I think prices are little above the average but rooms were nice and cozy. I think best amenity of this hotel is their 7th floor rooftop. Must see!

Seth M

The bar had just done last call as we walked in but the bartender let us get one more round before he closed up shop, pleasant experience. The bar was a little dark, as these restaurants often are, but a laid back and calm atmosphere

Carmen T

Hotel amenities are fine, but had to deal with annoying sounds (construction like sounds) that started early mornings and late evenings. I very much ranted to like this hotel, but am unlikely to visit it again. You can find better deals in this area.

Spencer F

What a wonderful hotel, great service, location, spa, restaurant/bar. Only complaint is some of the furniture seems to be getting older and a bit worn and the walls in some places are chipped etc.... But very small nit picking, the hotel is great overall.

Kehn H

Went there for a work holiday event. We had a small crowded place but overall great service and awesome selection of drinks.

Eric M

Nice hotel, by the Embarcadero, off the crowd of downtown. Rooms were large enough for being in SF, staff is friendly, cab and uber are easily available. Check in and check out were fast. Rooms are OK, feel like 5-10 years old, but well maintained. Rooms and bathrooms were clean.

Alessandro C

Amazing hotel! amazing Service! The staff is super friendly and super helpful! It was our honeymoon trip and we were treated very well! The only problem is the valet parking that cost $65 per day (are you serious?) and when you need the car you must call them 20 minutes in advance. In addition 35 $ for the hotel resort fee even if you don't use any of the services included in that (e.g I don't need yoga in the morning so why should I pay for that?)So to sum up there are lots of extra fees that add up to the bill, which is not very pleasant.

Roorge E

Checked in early and got a room straight away which was a nice touch. Wifi was free which was refreshing! I didn't use the spa or gym facilities but I did go up to the roof terrace to enjoy the views both during the day and in the evening of the pier/ferry terminal and Bay Bridge. I love the location and easy walking distance to everything including the muni to Castro and Mission Districts.

Emily B

We sat outside on the patio and had such a great time. The patio was very pretty and they managed to keep it warm on a cold night, making us very comfortable. Would definitely go back and recommend enjoying the patio!

Simon M

Ok place to go. Bit pricey. Crowd a bit douchey. Overall decent though

Sophia K

Everything was amazing! Food and drinks were perfection. I was there for a Holiday party.

Ruwan W

Very convenient place but average service and quality for the price

We had a great few nights here. Very comfortable and the staff were consistently very welcoming. The complimentary daily massage is a nice touch. Good location as well - right next to the ferry building and street car stops, and a very manageable walk into Union Square etc. Would definitely stay here again.

The staff was amazingly helpful and kind. They called the room to check on me after checking in just to make sure everything was to my liking. The rooms are clean, spacious and modern.

Jeff V

Rooms are really nice and the staff were ultra curteous. It has a pretty fancy pants vibe going on; I'd stay again so long as my company pays for it

Katie W

The staff was very welcoming and eager to help. My room was spacious and came with some fun bonuses. Location was great... Right across the street from the pier. I had a great view of the bay bridge. I was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't hear my neighbors. Easter egg: Go find the button behind the Bose speaker... it's the little things.

We had a very nice two bed room and it was very comfortable. The service was great and beds were comfortable. Overall enjoyed my stay a lot. Only thing was the pool was a few blocks away but other than that it was a great hotel.

Michael H

Came here for a wedding. Beautiful views and it was on the rooftop. You can only have small weddings but it's gorgeous. The bathrooms were lacking though and they didn't even have locks.

Great service and rooms with a view of the bay. Needs a little updating in the room we stayed compared to modern luxury hotels. Roof top lounge was a nice feature.

Cindi H

This is a wonderful place to stay. Every single member of their professional staff was kind, concerned, ready to please you and make sure you stay is great. You can't go wrong staying here. Super relaxing and spa like feeling.

Lauren G

Beautiful hotel, very friendly staff, and great views. Visited the restaurant in the hotel and it was great! Not too expensive either. A random complaint: there are no plugs near the beds which is not very user friendly.

Mathieu C

Stellar hotel. The room are perfectly clean. The concierge and room service are fast and efficient. We had a $50 discount for the breakfast at the Americano restaurant (entry within the hotel). The hotel has a rooftop with great views on the Embarcadero. There is a sauna (10 am - 8 pm, roughly).

Ahmad A

Loved my stay here.. Rooms are not fully sound proof so you still hear the noises from the streets. Views from top floor are awesome.

Andrew H

I didn't stay overnight at the hotel, but the restaurant downstairs is pretty solid. The italian dishes i ordered were all cooked well and the bar was good too. I must've went on a social night as the patio which doesn't usually seat people due to the cold was packed to the gills.

Beki S

Good hotel but ridiculously over-priced. Other than location (water left, work right) there's nothing special here.

Clean rooms, mini bar, snacks, good bar with patio.

Happy to stay again - just watch prices!

Simon W

It's a nice hotel. Stayed many times over the years. Great location just lost its edge of class. Starting to look a bit tired in places. Service ok but not what it was.

Drewes v

Great location, rooms are nicely appointed and the staff are friendly. Super close to most of the things I wanted to visit while here.

Edward C

I arrived late due to my meetings running long. The front desk told me that they had to change my room and apologized. They gave me a room was quite nice with a massive balcony overlooking the bay. It was great to wake up and have breakfast looking over the bay. Such great service and a nice hotel.

Victoria J

Service is excellent. Room is clean with a wonderful view of the port and bay bridge. Restaurant patio downstairs can get a bit noisy, but winds down later in the evening.

Steve Q

Great location. Close to water front. Just had drinks on a nice day on the patio. Was very nice.

Tom W

It's pricey considering how dated some of the room features are. If you are here on vacation then maybe it wouldn't feel so bad. I will say, the food here is great.

As someone who spends a large portion of their life in hotels, I feel confident in saying, without an update in the near future Vitale will soon become irrelevant.

Richard G

Visited Hotel Vitale for a professional mixer and was in one of the 7th floor rooms that had a rooftop patio. Had excellent views of the embarcadero as well of the Fleet Week airshow practice that was happening. Food was also excellent, the crab cakes with the sauce was phenomenal as was the pizza. Sorry can't remember the official names. I've been to plenty of hotels with catered food and appetizers and Hotel Vitale is definitely on the top 10.

Excellent customer service, best views, and super comfortable, luxurious rooms. Food is always delicious at their restaurant Americano!!

Henry T

Went to Americano, atmosphere was decent. Was for my wifes work event. Food is great, didn't have any specialty drinks so can't comment on that.

Theresa B

A wonderful boutique hotel right by the historic San Francisco Embarcadero and piers. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I only stayed for two days, but they recognized me after one. The only issue I had while there was trying to get a courtesy toothbrush from the front desk, which took about an hour. Other than that everything was great.

Kimberley C

Went to happy hour at Americano. Great food and drink selection and plenty of space if you go on a Monday evening :)

Radha S

Lovely hotel. Great location. Get a water and bridge view!

Anastasia T

Beautiful water view..but the WORST experience EVER, unless you guys like to be walked in on you naked multiple times, just because they don’t train their stuff basic things!

They told massage is available when we booked a room(there was the only reason we choose this hotel), but it was fully booked for few days upon arrival. When you tell the manager to fix it he just refuses to do anything! SHAME

Evan B

Stayed for a company event. The space was great and the food was delicious. The bar is a great to spot to meet up and grab a few drinks.

Brittany S

I stayed here during a recent business trip and was mostly impressed.

I had an inside-facing king room. They were not kidding when they said no view... it literally faced the other side of the hotel. While the view was lacking , the room itself was nice. It was very spacious for one person and was clean.

The front desk staff was very kind. I arrived quite early and did not expect to be able to check in. However, they had my room ready to go! I also had one issue with my card being charged without my permission, and they were quick to fix the problem!

The location is very close to a lot of things. It’s easy to access public transportation and many attractions are within walking distance. If you’re not sure how to get somewhere, the staff is very helpful in giving directions!

I would definitely stay here again the next time I’m in town.

For $570/night I was expecting a lot more. The gym is a repurposed hotel room, the restaurant quite expensive, you can hear what's happening in the hallway. Worse, I came back to my room after a long day and the cleaning service had forgotten my room. Unacceptable at this price. The management team, clearly needs to figure out better processes if they're charging so much.

We had dinner at the restaurant. We were confused at first about who our waiter was because several wait staff approached us throughout the night. It was a comfortable place to sit. The food was good. The Bianca pizza was delicious. The goat cheese cheesecake was very good as a dessert.

Overall a nice hotel with good breakfast.. But some small things were off. The front desk staff that I delt with weren't as accommodating as expected for a hotel of this price. Small detail, but my room was overlooking the bridge but the window was so dirty I couldn't see anything. I should've complained but I didn't.. And now I'm that person writing it as a comment

Great service and staff. 5 stars spa. Amenities awesome... but the view, oh my god the view!

I used to stay there frequently. Last trip, I booked a room for a week. When I realized that my trip would be delayed by a day, I called ahead (twice) to confirm that the room would still be available. I even agreed to pay for the night I was delayed. They assured me it wouldn't be a problem. When I showed up, they had canceled my room. By then, all the other hotels were booked. I called the hotel manger, who just didn't care.

Came into SF for memorial weekend and stayed at Hotel Vitale for a night. The staff was generous and courteous. The location was perfect for walking the wharf. I had no trouble getting in late and settling into the enormous room. Nothing was out of place, everything was clean. Would absolutely stay again.

just not great. Its clean, it looks nice, but really not a great hotel. to plug my phone charger in at the nightstand, I had to crawl on my hands and knees like a dog. The TV does not work. Neither room service nor the front desk would answer the room phone, so I had to call on my cell (they answered that right away). There was no coffee maker in the room. they sent one up, but did not send coffee filters with it!?! The water and coffee in the lobby seem to be perpetually empty. Basically, the place looks nice, but poor follow through in general.

I loved this hotel! The location is great because you’re right by the bay bridge so you can see the water from your window, and right across the street is an indoor market (Ferry Building Marketplace - Similar to Chelsea Market or Gansevoort Market in NYC) with all kinds of specialty foods and interesting things to look at and purchase.

The service was great, and I would definitely stay again.

Friendly and accommodating staff. Went for my wife's birthday, and we got upgraded to a corner mini suite that has an in-room soaking tub with a great view of the Bay Bridge. Good location right on the Embarcadero, basically just down and across from the Ferry Building.

Linda C

Arrived to find our panoramic room was now being upgraded to a terrace suite. Sounds promising except to find the bathtub isn't working and it takes about an hour to fix. The bathrooms overall could use a mopping. However, the staff was friendly and helpful. Spa was good, but wished additional services were offered.

Very nice hotel. My two criticisms are:

The room service is extremely expensive and does not have very good options.

Also, their pillows are way too soft. When I called down to ask about firmer pillows they said the ones on the bed were the firmest they have.

The room was extremely nice and I love that they have a sound machine. I think that should be mandatory in all hotels. All in all it was a very pleasant stay.

Eh.....not great. Check in was a hassle and was late and the desk staff weren't too helpful. Too many other good hotels in the city for a less weighty price.

This is not a negative review. We went to the spa here. It was decent enough but for the price... It could have been better. The place is clean, the reception staff was super polite. The massage therapy staff were wonderful but... It's no Burke Williams.

We stayed there last weekend in room 416. Beautiful setting and the room was really nice (not 5 star but close). Location is good but you do have to walk over a mile or more for most of the good Bay attractions (I.e., Pierre 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, etc.). My biggest issue with the place was the customer service. It was a joke between my wife and I how many times we could go in and out of the hotel without one staff member acknowledging us. If we got anything it was usually just a nod. I will give credit to a younger guy who worked behind the counter last Saturday, he was the only friendly person there. Also, don’t expect a pool, spa and the workout room was dark and tiny (we ended up just running outside). So to end, the location, the room and the view were better than average but don’t expect the even average customer service. We won’t be going back. Ohh yeah... almost forgot. Saturday night we could feel the music (literally pounding base) until 11:00 because they had a special event downstairs in the restaurant. Always nice when you want to have a relaxing and romantic evening in the hotel room.

We are a bay area natives but we always like to treat ourselves for night in the city without our kids (or my mother in law 😅).

Hotel Vitale is always our first choice! Great location, amazing view and good service.

Staying there during the 4th of July or new years eve is something you must try.

I give them 4 because the rooms could be more fancier to be a 5 stars quality.

All overall a solid choice 😊

Quaint. Clean . Perfect if your looking for somewhere dog friendly. My dogs loved the small garden & quick walks to the beach . Yes, the rooms are small but perfect if you need an affordable place to lay your head while in the city

My friend hosted her wedding here on the fifth floor rooftop terrace. The rooftop is an incredibly good wedding venue.

I had a good experience at the street level bar before the wedding. Ordered a delicious beer and service was good.

The rooftop has beautiful views of the bay, the bay bridge, the Embarcadero and the financial district. We had a lot of fun dancing in the night.

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights for a work conference and was very impressed by it. It is located right across from the water and is a nice break from the hectic scene a few blocks away in the heart of downtown. Inside, the bedroom and bathroom were large and very nicely designed. My room had a great view of the water and Bay Bridge. The roof decks scattered throughout the hotel are a really creative design choice and allow for stunning city and bay views while relaxing outside. Every staff member I encountered was professional and friendly. The gym is small but they have free passes to the YMCA a block away, and that is a great place with everything you could need to workout. I’d definitely recommend staying here.

Had an awesome stay at the Hotel Vitale! Staff was very welcoming/helpful and the location is top notch (especially if you plan to do the farmers market which I would highly recommend). Furnishings could use some updating, but they are comfortable/functional. My only complaint is regarding the online booking process, which is a bit clunky and led to me being accidentally charged for vallet parking (when it was supposed to be park of my package). However a helpful individual named Spencer worked everything out in a very proactive and timely manner. Mistakes are always a possibility in any situation, but it's the effort to correct them that truly defines customer service! Needless to say I'll be back....

Friendly staff and a great location. What more do you need? Hey the rooms are top rate to if you are wondering! Web site is easy to use to book and nothing really seems to be a problem for these guys 6 out of 5. Well done.

In general the hotel is so terribly managed that I had to write this review. It's a shame because the hotel is nice and in a great location. Some people who work there are nice. Some of the employees are beyond incompetent and also rude. Most are incompetent due to the management's failings.

Had Thanksgiving dinner here. It was good. The location is nice and there's a good view of the bay bridge.

Stayed here for a weekend stay with a friend. Hotel was decent and had nice touches throughout the hotel. The hotel bar was shut down during our stay and the pop up bar worked but was less than thrilling. Ordered room service our first morning and was shocked at the price for a plate of fruit and a pot of coffee. I understand it's room service but charging $60 for something that simple is insane. Beds were comfortable and I appreciated the Bose player with CD's, a cute touch. Also enjoyed the lavender that is scattered throughout the hotel. Would stay again, and we lucked out with a wonderful view!

Located steps from the ferry building, this boutique hotel is a relaxing, comfortable place to stay. Staff were unfailingly friendly and adept at anticipating our needs.

What a beautiful property! Great hospitality and a great view. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would love to come back. The property had a wonderful workout room. Attached are photos from the roof terrace

My favorite place to stay in the Financial District. Super clean rooms, great view. Very quiet, even when full and busy. Great bar downstairs, and you must experience the roof top deck. Get a drink at the bar downstairs and head up to any level, and watch the ferry's and the foot traffic on The Embarcadero. Rinse and repeat.

Baris K

One of the best hotels in San Francisco, at a great location for walks. It’s restaurant and bar is popular and entertaining in the summers.

Very hip, beautifully decorated hotel, with artisan created furnishings. We had a delightful stay.

Katie M

Great spacious room large bathroom. Close to everything. Wonderful bar with great food downstairs. Great place don't pick the one down the way friend stayed said there room was a shoe box. Too tiny.

Carole M

Reasonable cost, thanks to Groupon, and a location that could not be better! We had a view of the Bay Bridge and were within walking distance to the Ferry Building- perfect for grabbing breakfast before a full day! Complimentary access to the YMCA (wish we’d had time to use it), warm and helpful staff (we were welcomed back every time we came in the door and wished well every time we left), and complimentary coffee/tea in the lobby every morning were all great aspects of our stay. The lounge chair in our room was also a favorite. I hope we will have an opportunity to stay here again.

Ryan T

Lower floor road facing rooms are so noisy that a noise machine, ear plugs, and pillow over the head we're not enough to block out sound.

Hotel unapologetic and it took hours to get room switched _the next day_.

View can be great in some rooms, but does not make up for the poor customer service.
